Any little memory, item, event or odor may trigger our grief over mother loss, regardless of the cause. Whether by death, emotional absence, chronic illness or substance abuse, mothering without your mother is a challenge. The customs and traditions surrounding the back-to-school season can send us spiraling back to previous seasons in our lives.
As we hit August, many of our motherless daughters are, or will soon be navigating the Back-to-School season. Today’s episode features our Podcast Administrator, Sarah Lynn Wells, as she discusses how this season bubbles up emotions for her.

Everyone has a story, a unique set of circumstances and issues that make us who we are. Likewise, as we move through the grief process, it, too, is unique. Your experience will not be like that of anyone else. Like a fingerprint, it is “uniquely yours.” Being “free to be me” means acknowledging that I am not subject to anyone’s parameters for my healing process.

We can all tell you the day and time our lives changed forever. We became mother less in different ways, but ALL of us have had our lives forever changed by our loss – our relationships, our functioning at work, the way we handle situations, run our households and perceive the world.
Healing from the impact of loss is unique to every individual. Many times it involves a flurry of activity and accomplishment, However, there comes a time when you need to simply stand still. Stop! Get off the merry-go-round. Be in the moment. Take stock of your situation, reassess. This podcast shares a few ideas on how to approach that journey.

It highlights how the ministry creates a supportive sisterhood—“a raincoat in the storm”—where women show up for one another, offering empathy, shared understanding, and emotional shelter. Mother loss comes in many forms, but most people do not think about dementia. Learning the different forms of mother loss besides death is an eye-opening experience. Many of us never understood that we were motherless daughters until we heard the explanation. General conversations rarely include language that articulates that experience. Dementia holds a category all its own. In this episode Kris Fisher shares her journey of discovery.

Navigating the holidays as a motherless daughter can be a mix of emotions. There’s an expectation of a Norman Rockwell-style family celebration that just doesn’t live up to expectations for so many grieving a loss or dealing with a strained relationship. Loved ones of a motherless daughter struggle to understand how she feels or find the right words to say. The “holiday season” is filled with traditions at every turn. While they anchor us and provide familiarity and predictability, they can also be the source of stress and trigger deep sadness and grief. However, because they create a sense of belonging, gradually introducing new activities can maintain the togetherness and provide needed support for healing.
Joy and sadness coexist during the holidays while grieving a loss. The answer to this paradox could be in creating new traditions. It requires great creativity and innovation. Our Founder, Dr. Mary Ellen Collins, gives us an example of both while sharing a personal dilemma for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The “holiday season” is characterized by family gatherings, festive decorations, gift-giving and feasts that include a large variety and amount of food. Minds and hearts are void of negativity and replaced by the spirit of kindness, generosity and good will. Great efforts are put forth and money spent to modify schedules, arrange travel and buy gifts. But there is an entirely different scenario for a large population of people that the media does not acknowledge. Christine Fishel shines a light on “Why It Can Be Hard to Go Home for the Holidays.”

Our "Voices of Experience" are the best ones to tell you about the Motherless Daughters Ministry (MDM). Healing from the impact of loss is different for every individual. While our experiences are unique, there are common threads that bind us into a supportive community of sisters. Vanessa West is now a part of the ministry with her own unique voice. In this episode, our Podcast Administrator, Sarah Lynn Wells interviews her about how she learned about the ministry, and the impact it has had on her grief journey.

Sometimes, when you watch a movie or read someone’s story, there are parts of it you overlook. This episode features the experience of Sarah Lynn Wells, Podcast Administrator and blog writer, as she watches the movie “Wicked” with fresh eyes. She noticed, for the first time, that the main character, Elphaba, is also a motherless daughter. While not the focus of the story, it does shed some light on her and helps the author think about some things she’s wrestled with as well.

Getting hit by a storm and trying to deal with the aftermath is a lot like what many of us deal with when losing someone we love. Finding community and experiencing the power of presence from others is crucial in navigating grief. Sometimes what we really need is someone to listen and show up emotionally. It is natural for us to set up expectations. But when things don’t go the way we expect, what determines how we respond? It’s different for everyone. But the earlier we learn how to control that response, the better. This episode features Cathy DiBella’s review of the book entitled “It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way,” by Lisa TerKeurst. The book addresses walking through disappointment with a “biblical insight.” Cathy gives us an inspiring look at transforming the inevitable disappointments of life into a journey of discovery and hope through what she terms as “the living water of God’s truth.”

Healing from the impact of loss is a major focus of the Motherless Daughters Ministry offerings. It requires work that is sometimes painful. In our humanity, we try to avoid pain. But when it cannot be avoided, we diligently seek to alleviate it. Painful memories, thoughts, and experiences get neatly tucked away under layers of coping mechanisms and routines. Over time, we become insulated from the hurtful feelings of the past and difficult truths. Christine Fishe uniquely shares her discoveries as she peels back the layers of her healing journey.

Childhood experiences may not get a label until well into adulthood. It may be years before we acquire the language to describe how our life has been impacted by our past. Even if the explanation is objectionable, it is tailor-made for us to wear. When we discover truths, it is upon us to decide how to respond. Dr. Mary Ellen Collins, the Motherless Daughter Ministry Founder, opens the door on her experience.

Healing from the impact of loss is a cyclical journey. Instead of a destination we acquire new knowledge and skills to manage grief and become our best selves. This episode is the continuation of Dottie Menkhaus’ story. It encompasses the last 2 parts of her 3-part blog about her journey toward healing from the impact of mother loss. The previous episode includes an interview update from the author and provides insight into the tools she gained to strengthen her journey. In this episode, we hear “the rest of the story.”

Healing from the impact of loss is truly a journey. There is no destination when it comes to grief. Every experience is unique because of our individual circumstances. It is impossible to create a timeline for this process because it requires something different for each individual. So, we describe the “journey” one story at a time. Today’s episode is Dottie’s story. Her “voice of experience” may encourage you on a healing pathway.

Sometimes taking a step out in faith can be challenging and scary! Today’s episode focuses on following God out of our comfort zone and into what He is calling us to do. This can be hard for motherless daughters navigating grief. But, remaining where we are may be missing out on extraordinary plans God has for us or others to whom we will witness.

The book not only features her journey, but that of nine (9) other women. She provided a compassionate and safe environment to share their experiences, encourage other motherless daughters, and celebrate their mother’s legacy. Becoming motherless was not a choice, but everything after that becomes an opportunity to exercise that power. Making choices is not always an easy task. Our feelings, emotions, people, and circumstances get in the way. However, some factors can facilitate our decisions.

As we start a new year, we are looking back at an insightful perspective shared by one of our talented blog writers, Christine Fishel, as she opened the door to 2018. It is a journey worthy of recall to help us avoid overlooking pearls in our midst.
Christine shared her experience of surviving a tough year of multiple losses. As the year drew to a close, she revisited the difficulty of navigating overwhelming grief and how she was able to get through the year. Her gaze was on the new year which had to be better than the last 12 months. The amazing gift she received during those months carried her through tough times and has become a personal treasure.

The world of mother loss is filled with grief, a sea of emotions, confusion, pain, and sometimes hurt feelings. Whatever the cause of mother loss, it is never an easy journey. When it involves emotional absence, narcissism, and estrangement, it touches the lives of everyone nearby. Healing from the impact of mother loss looks different for each of us and starts by taking the first step of the journey.

It’s almost the holiday season which means busy schedules and often lots of expectations. This season can be challenging to navigate for anyone, but especially those grieving a loss or coming to terms with estrangement/emotional abandonment from a parent. Many end up struggling with a lack of patience during this “most wonderful time of the year”. This episode is based on a blog from Mary Ellen Collins, our Founder, and looks at some of the underlying causes of impatience and ways we can recognize when and how it affects our lives.

When we experience the heartbreaking loss of a mother through death, emotional distance, or estrangement, it can be hard to figure out a path forward. The world offers many distractions or ways to drown the pain instead of processing it. However, it doesn’t have enough to offer for your mother’s loss. But there is a solution. Today’s episode looks at how we can truly find unexplainable peace through Jesus, which is much better than what the world has to offer.

A motherless daughter can be defined in many different ways. Of course, some become motherless daughters when they lose their mother through death. But, others are motherless daughters through the loss of nurturing from a mother. This may happen for a variety of reasons, but one of those is narcissism. Today’s episode focuses on the story of a motherless daughter of a narcissistic mother. Her story is one of hardship and grief, but also one of healing and peace that she found in Jesus.

We set goals, work hard and make progress toward what we think we want. But successful achievements do not always bring a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Goals not based upon truths yield impatience. Join us as we share a blog written for the Motherless Daughters Ministry by Cindy Stepanek.

027 - Healing is a process. When one suffers trauma such as mother loss at a young age seeds are sown, roots grow, and take hold. What if the roots are intertwined, tangled, and deeply embedded? Is it worth it to undergo the unearthing process? Will it be painful? Yes. Will it be easy? No. Will it be worth it? Yes.
Our guest blogger shares about the roots that can get established from the trauma of early mother loss. Healing from the impact of this loss is a process and takes time and work. But there is good news in that there is hope for the future.

024 - Survivors find a way to adapt and get through one day at a time. In recognition of Black History Month in February and Women's History Month in March, we present the plight of our black sisters, who were motherless daughters learning to survive.
"It's not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one who is most adaptable to change." Mary Ellen Collins, Founder and Executive Director of the Motherless Daughters Ministry, quotes Charles Darwin when summing up her presentation about our African American sisters. They represent all of us who have survived the unspeakable change of being without our mothers, whether biological, adoptive, surrogate, or unlabeled.

016 - Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia, which affects memory, thinking, language and behavior. As it progresses, it can render your mother less and less recognizable as the person you have always known. The mothering you have experienced and have come to expect is slipping away. This is another form of mother loss. No one understands better what you are going through except other daughters experiencing the same thing.
