You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. Psalm 139:5-12

“Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud…” Proverbs 8:1-3

This episode we are talking about finding friends on social media!

Social media is the modern day meeting place, the same as the city gate was in ancient times. We will either heed the call of wisdom or listen to the siren song of folly. If we listen to folly, our time on social media will be frivolous and meaningless. But if we listen to wisdom, we will find peace and friendship.

So first, choose who you want to learn from. Follow them and listen closely.

Second, friendship is in the comment section/at replies. Look for people who are engaging thoughtfully and then pay attention to what they have to say.

Third, cast a wide net, while still prioritizing those you want to learn from. The wide net makes you available to those who wouldn’t have met you otherwise, and the prioritizing keeps your wisdom follows at the forefront.

Fourth, show interest in person. Reply to some stories with some emojis. Reply to an @reply with your own thoughts and start a smaller conversation. Learn the culture of whatever platform you’re on and be intentional with non verbal affirmations. You never know who will connect with you.

I hope this podcast has given you some ideas for how to make friends, especially if you’re in an isolated situation and the internet is your only access to community.

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Deuteronomy 5:11

Names are pretty important to God.

Here’s some ways I remember names: • Say it back to them when you meet • Visualize the face with the name after you leave • Write it down with other names of people in that group so you have a reference (I use Trello for this). • Ask: “Remind me of your name again?”

Being friendly is part of our calling as Christians.

• Compliments tell people “I like you.” • Questions tell people “I’m curious about you.” • And statements like “tell me about yourself” open up the floor and tell people “I want to know you.”

“Therefore in all things, whatever you want people to do for you, so do for them for this is the law and the prophets.” Matthew 7:12

The five love languages are gifts, words of affirmation, physical touch, quality time, and acts of service. It is important to learn how to love with all of them.

Jessica Sowards of Roots and Refuge has a powerful video called “Fluency in Love: He cares about the Cowprint” that tells the story of how God showed her that some of her love languages were broken and how He healed them. https://youtu.be/3XVQXelBK48

I also share the story about how growing up in a logical family helped me to learn to communicate logically and strengthened how I understand and handle my emotions.

When we are grounded in Christ and we know that we are loved by Him, it becomes natural to show appropriation for others, which is the first step to initiating friendship.

“For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭13:12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

What does it mean? That’s what we’re here to talk about.

There’s a lot of talk right now about “self-care.” Most is about physical actions that refresh the body and soul, but what does this look like digitally?

I recently started purging old social media posts, and the feeling of freedom is extraordinary.

No one needs to know what I publicly tweeted my old friends back in 2012, and many neighboring tweets in that era are thoroughly embarrassing!! Giving myself a clean slate in this area is both a freedom and a blessing.

“Conditional Love” is not Love.

“Unconditional Love” starts with Christ and Christ alone.

While we are called to love others sacrificially, that’s certainly not everyone always.

Thankfully, “Reciprocal Affection” is a thing and most necessary for friendship. Reciprocal Affection is based in trust for the other person and is rooted Unconditional Love.

Heads Up! I’m all over the place in this episode.

Today I’m talking about looking to heaven to have enough time to create and enjoy all the art we want.

I’m also talking about not having enough emotional energy to encourage all the people I want to encourage. #INFJproblems

And I’m also talking about why I want to love people through my art, because back in 2004-2008 I was so alone and I went to the internet to find friends.

And finally, I ramble about my amazing husband and why I would never have the marriage we have now if he had showed up when I most desperate for him.

Because whether we’re creating art, or consuming art, or supporting someone else who is creating, it all comes back to needing and giving love.
