DAY Ministry shares with the world the fruit of work by Rev. Dr. D. A. Yuan. He is an American pastor, author and conference speaker who was raised up in China and trained as a physicist before his conversion to evangelical Christianity. Once knowing Christ, he became fascinated by the Bible and everything it relates to. He sought for biblical truth as the revelation from God, which should and can be harmonized to the truths in other branches of knowledge, such as philosophy, science, and history. He has extended interests in chronology, archaeology, astronomy, prophecy; systematic and historical theology; ethics, law, economics, politics; arts and music. But mostly, he loves to do expository teaching from the Scripture. Here is a collection of the insights he received from the LORD.

In Chap 26, Bildad exalted God as mighty and holy. Compared to Him, all men are nothing but worms. He was implying that Job should not be so proud, thinking that he could win a case against God in the court of God. In Chap 26, Job did the same. He called his friends men without wisdom while he exalted God as almighty and the only source of wisdom. Both sides of the debate ended up accusing the other side, taking on the role of God.

Eliphaz made up his mind that his worldview of a moralistic universe could not be wrong. Thus, Job must have committed big sins; therefore, he was receiving deserved retributions from God. Eliphaz swore that he, himself, would never go the way of the wicked. Then, he advised Job for the last time to repent in order to be restored to glory. The worldview of a machine-like, moralistic universe is a crude approximation of the created, fallen universe ruled over by a holy and sovereign God. Absolutizing the approximation results in doing evil by “good-will.”

Zophar developed a theme about his friend Bildad, describing the fate of the wicked man in hell. He did it artistically and masterfully, and he was possibly correct. The problem was that he implied Job as the referent, which is totally opposite to the description by God. This showed the bifurcation of human minds due to different perceptions of reality. How should humans establish consensus? The four basic questions of philosophy are revisited, and the importance of the testimony of the persecuted is reevaluated.

Job challenged the system of a Moralistic Universe that his “Friends” held as their worldview, pointing out in particular one glaring failure: the promised punishment for the wicked is often not fulfilled in reality. The wicked appear to be blessed and happy in this life, their children multiply as their wealth, and even immediately after death, their legacies are carried on by many admirers. The system is crap! It is not true, and it cannot comfort suffering souls.

Job complained that his friends were masterful torturers of his soul. He believed that God allowed this torture. God was the one who surrounded Job, fighting against him, treating him as an enemy. All was against Job, even his own body. He questioned his “friends,” asking them why they were not satisfied by his physical suffering, and he hated his own soul by being convinced of his guilt. Nevertheless, and based on two facts, Job believed that God is Just and himself to be innocent. Job was convinced of the need of a redeemer and resurrection. He warned his “friends” about being erroneous.

However, the artistic prowess of his position was misused because it is wrong both in terms of theology and application: The Law of Retribution does not stand without exception in all of its four logical forms, and God testified that Job was righteous.

Job judged his friends as “sorry counselors” who provided him nothing but windy words. Nevertheless, Job believed in the same system as his friends, and could have said the same things if he and his friends could have switched places, but he would not do it. He laid the responsibility on God, who blinded the “friends,” who acted as beasts and enemies of Job. He maintained his piety and conscience, crying out for a mediator to represent him before God. He asked God for a pledge to do justice on those who had done evil, as he felt that he, himself, was at the gate of Sheol.

Eliphaz started the second round of the dialogue by pointing out that the words of Job were dangerous self-condemning. He advised Job to be humbler so that he would then admit his nature as a sinner, which, in turn, would cause Job to see his personal guilt as the source of his suffering. He painted a traditional picture of the fate of the wicked, implying that Job’s life was a close parallel.

Job fought fire with fire. He pointed out that his friends were not the only wise men in the world, for he (Job) understood and valued the system of a moralistic universe just as much they did. However, he makes clear that his friends were no wiser than the animals, who can see that Job’s sufferings are acts of God. In contrast to the inept human wisdom, God’s wisdom is powerful, just, and scary. The friends were useless physicians, and because of that, Job wanted a hearing with God. He warned his friends not to lie for God, for God will not appreciate their partiality for Him. Job is confident that he could win his case, even if his only hope is in a resurrected next life. He prayed that God would stop the heavy hand, and let him speak. He felt mortality coming near, and he understood that the lifelessness waiting in Sheol would be no good for him or God. Job felt the sadness of insignificance more than he felt his physical pain.

Sermon Series: The Book of Job: Relating to God While Suffering in Life

In Chap 6, Job defended his speech in Chap 3, saying that God was hurting him, and that he wished that God would rather kill him. He wished his friends were reliable and that they would truthfully tell him where he did wrong. Job’s friends, nevertheless, indicated that they were terrified by his lot, and we see that they, themselves, stopped thinking rationally. Under such a situation, Job felt that he had the right to complain. In Chap 7, Job laments that life as a human is already hard with regard to the overall condition of laboring. The natural desire for rest and the fruit of work had turned into the desire to die for Job, for he had no rest. Life was already short and quick, and Job now, given his incredible condition, wanted to go into Sheol with no return. He wondered why God put such attention on him, as if looking for fault. He asked God to leave him alone or grant him a pardon.

Job’s friend, Eliphaz, represents reason, and he provides comfort to the suffering Job while also questioning the latter’s fear of God and overall integrity. He asked Job to be patient, consistent, realistic, and submissive to God. While his words are 90% true, and sometimes quoted by NT apostles, the 10% that are wrong make his whole approach unfit and injurious. Much of Eliphaz’s advice comes from personal experience but at times sounds like it is actually from Satan.

Job gave the opening speech of his dialogue with his friends by cursing the day of his birth and the night of his conception, then lamenting of his misfortune, which literally came “out of the blue.” Basically, he was asking these questions: “Why Should I Live?” “Who Should I Blame?” “What Can I Do?” Those are the typical questions we would ask when facing adversities.

The author of Job, apparently by divine inspiration, gave us a big picture of cosmic proportion. God was making a point to Satan, and Job was a pawn on the board. God says that true believers believe because of what God is and not because of what He does for them. Satan believes otherwise, for the concepts of love, trust, and noble intentions are beyond him. Thus, the sufferings began, seemingly random to people, but under control by God.

The book ends with one of the greatest of benedictions in the New Testament (13:11-14).

He asked the Corinthians to do better, teaching them at the same time a theology of giving (8:6-15): Giving is a positive response to grace (8:6-9); Giving is beneficial to the givers (8:10-12); and Giving is practicing the Biblical Principle of Equity (8:13-15). Paul taught the Corinthians the way of handling money: to find a trustworthy team (8:16-24).

They give up the “outer life” and grow the “inner life.” They are bold in speaking because of knowing the future glorification with Christ.

Paul spent two chapters defending his character, emphasizing that he was not fickle in changing his travel plans. He planned to visit Corinth twice. One visit turned “short and painful,” and the other was delayed. The changes were due to necessity; the “super apostles” humiliated Paul in his short visit, and Ephesus need more work. God works everything out for His faithful. Paul’s “severe letter” led to repentance of the Corinthians, even the sinning brother they excommunicated. Paul forgives and encourages forgiveness, as they restored the collection project for Jerusalem. Ministers of God should be honest, sincere, trustworthy and faithful, both in being and in name.

Paul conducts the ministry of the New Covenant, which is by the spirit, not the letter. The glory of the Old Covenant is eclipsed by that of the New. The veil of Moses was removed by the Spirit of the Lord. For Christ is the spirit of the Law, and all who receive the Holy Spirit from Christ have liberty from the Letter of the Law. They are forgiven once and for all.

Paul visited Corinth for three times: (1) founding the church of Corinth during his 2nd Missionary Journey (A.D.50-51); (2) a “short and painful visit” during his 3rd Missionary Journey (A.D.52-54); and (3) the visit in the winter of 53/54. He wrote four letters to Corinth: (1) the “former letter” in c.52; (2) I Corinthians in early 53; (3) the “severe letter” in middle 53; and (4) II Corinthians in later 53. The first three letters are from Ephesus; I Corinthians was from Macedonian (perhaps Philippi).

The resurrected body is spiritual in the sense of being holy and free, not subject to sin, death, or even to space and time. However, it is not just a spirit but a corporal body. It is a glorified body in agreement with a regenerated spirit and sanctified soul. It is fitting for heaven, with everlasting life, and victorious over death because of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

The book moves to the application of the eighth blessing of the Beatitudes: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” Being willing to suffer (even losing one's life) for the sake of righteousness is the deepest level of sanctification because it means that the person is unfit for the world but ready for heaven. Believers of Jesus Christ are not afraid of death because we know that Jesus died but resurrected from the dead. He is the first fruits of the resurrection. All who are in him by faith will go through the same glorified body.

Prophesying is speaking the mysteries of God in a known language to men either by direct revelation from the Holy Spirit or by illumination from the Spirit to cause a deeper understand of the Bible. In a church gathering, many spiritual gifts could be used to benefit one another, but over all, they must be utilized in an orderly and Biblical manner. True spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit promote the order of heaven on earth, in the church called the “Kingdom of Heaven.” Disorderly conduct reveals the flesh or dark spirits other than the Holy Spirit. No one filled with the Holy Spirit will lose self-control or promote women teaching publicly over adult men in the church because he latter are against the Biblically established order.

Spiritual gifts equip people to serve one another. In this sense, prophesying is more beneficial than speaking in tongues. In the situation of the Pentecost, the disciple preached the gospel in languages that they never learned but were the hometown dialects of someone in the audience. The gift does not leave even the situation changed. When no one in the audience knows the language, tongue speaking should become a private act of praying in tongues. Public speaking of God’s word in an unknown foreign language was originally a sign of judgment to the Jews. So it has a limited time of availability.

The greatest, everlasting spiritual power is love. Spiritual gifts are abilities to do the works of love, but without love, they are nothing. Love is the way God deals with us, and the way we should be dealing with others. Some spiritual gifts will stop by themselves; some will be stopped by God at the second coming of Christ. Love, however, is everlasting -- together with faith and hope. Even among these, love is the greatest.

The next issue on peacemaking in the church is between the people with distinct spiritual gifts. As one God has three persons, one family has a man and a woman, and one church has people with spiritual gifts that differ from one another. The gifts are sovereignly distributed by the Holy Spirit, and the differences are meant to serve one another and unite the church. People with different gifts are like members of one body, in need of each other and serving one another. It is not meant for establishing divisive ranks.

The early church practiced the Communion (Lord’s Supper) and the Agape Feast together. Some in the Church of Corinth were not serious in taking communion and became sick or dead apparently because of it. Paul relays the true meaning, purpose, and ministry of the communion as a renewing of the New Covenant and prompting for repentance - a ministry of the vertical dimension. It is different from Agape Feast, which is to practice love and fellowship - a ministry of the horizontal dimension.

The book turns to a group of topics related to peacemaking, the seventh blessing of the Beatitudes. The first topic is the peace between the men and women in the church. The secret of peace is in the recognition of the Trinitarian mystery: the difference in roles with the equality of position. It covers the relationship between the persons in the Trinity, Christ and the church, and man and woman in the church and family. The physical head covering of women may be only necessary in the first century cultural context at Corinth, but the spiritual covering (recognizing God’s intention at the creation to distinguish the roles) is still necessary universally and everlastingly.

The Israelites, even though “baptized” and “taking communion,” fell to temptations; their flesh craved for evil in four areas: (1) idolatry, (2) sexual immorality, (3) complaining against God’s provision [doubting His character and goodness], and (4) grumbling against God-ordained leadership [claiming “all congregation is holy”]. Paul says that Christians do not have to fall to temptations because we have the Holy Spirit. Resist temptations by God’s power and for His glory; victory belongs to the redeemed. Holy meal at the pagan temple is fellowshipping with the demons behind the idols, and is forbidden, but eating meat that might have been sacrificed to idols is a gray area to be determined by the principle of seeking right conduct for the profit and edification of others.

Paul has genuine apostolic authority and the right of being supported by the church that he served. However, he chose not to use all his rights in order that his ministry motivation might not be accused of greediness. He is living for others, seeking for receiving all the potential rewards God prepared for him. By putting God’s interest over self-interest, he is practicing the sixth blessing in the Beatitudes: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Theologically, idols are nothing but human arts and crafts, not higher than humans. Those who worship idols are silly, knowing not their position in the household of God. Therefore, unknowingly eating meat that had been sacrificed to an idol would create no ill effect on spirit-filled believers. However, there are real demons that hide behind idols in order to establish human worship, and some former pagans had personal experiences with demonic interference. Those persons might have thought that they could be repossessed, or that it was ok to fellowship with both God and the demons. Strong believers must think for the sake of the weak believers, even though it might cost them the opportunity to eat meat. This is the fifth blessing in the Beatitudes at work: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”

Marriage is not a calling for all believers just as being Jewish or a freeman is not. In the spiritual kingdom of God, the physical and social conditions are not essential, so believers should not expect changes to those conditions directly because of faith. If there is a calling for singleness because of a calling for missions, it really is a blessing, especially when then the end time is expected to be close. If there is no such calling, then seek opportunities to marry a good person. Widows and widowers are free to remarry as long as both are in Christ. If there is not a suitable person, count singleness as a blessing. This revelation is from the Holy Spirit.

Marriage is good for resisting fleshly temptation. Believers must not divorce the unbelieving spouse, for the whole family has been regarded as clean by God because of the believer. Salvation of the beloved ones are the works of God, but through the believing family member. However, if the nonbeliever wants to abandon the believer, it is a legal divorce.

Some members of the Corinthian church were trigger happy to sue fellow members in secular court concerning the issue of property rights. Paul condemned this tight holding of rights and ownership and urged them to learn meekness, taking a loss for the sake of Christ. It is the third blessing of the Beatitudes that the Corinthians were lacking: it was the proof of having been born again.

Sermon #6: The Problem of the Toleration of Sin: The Biblical Solution (1 Cor 5:1-13)

One member of the Corinthian church committed an egregious sin, taking in his stepmother, something even the pagans do not approve. The Corinthian church not only tolerated the sin, but also became proud of their tolerance. The second blessing of the Beatitudes says that only those who mourn for sins can be comforted by grace. Paul denounced this lack of mourning for sin and commanded a church disciplinary action. By excommunication, the member is no longer in the church, the realm of God and Christ, but in the world, the realm of Satan. Without the protection of God and Christ, a true believer will be tortured by Satan. The suffering of the body is for the saving the soul.

The problem of pride in the Church of Corinth was due to two misunderstandings of the gospel. Not only is the gospel totally despised by the world (1:18-31), it can only be understood through the work of the Holy Spirit (2:1-16). The gospel is centered on the death of Christ (2:1-5); it is the eternal plan of God (2:6-9), and it is revealed by the Holy Spirit (2:10-16). So if anyone understands it and believes, it is the work of God, to which men should only be grateful and have nothing to boast.

Sermon #1: Introduction to the Book of First Corinthians (1 Cor 1:1-9)

Paul visited Corinth in AD 50-51 and founded the church. In the epistolary opening (1:1-9), Paul affirmed that the church was indeed saved through faith, positionally sanctified, having a secure relationship with God. But while the church was vibrant, energetic, and richly blessed in financial resources and spiritual gifts, the believers lacked maturity and faithfulness. They needed to work on practical sanctification, i.e. on the fellowship with God. This letter revealed the lacking the eight blessings of the Beatitudes (Matt 5:3-10), in order, taught by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7). The book is an application of the Beatitudes as the standard and guide for practical sanctification.

Sermon #2: The Problem of Pride and the First Diagnosis: The Gospel Is a Folly to the World (1 Cor 1:10-31)

The Church of Corinth was divided into parties and factions, each claiming to follow one famous person (1:10-17). This reveals a severe problem of pride or the lack of humility, missing the first blessing in the Beatitudes: the recognition of being “poor in spirit.” Paul diagnosed that because of two misunderstandings of the gospel, thinking that it is a new philosophy taught by able teachers. The first correction is: The gospel cannot be understood by the world (1:18-31). The message of God is a folly to the world (1:18-25), and the people of God are fools to the world (1:26-31).

Before the beginning of the process of salvation as known to men (where Salvation equals Justification, Regeneration, Adoption, Betrothal, Sanctification, and then Glorification), God has done a lot more: Election which equates with Foreknowledge Predestination, Redemption, and Call. There are varying opinions on the big picture of salvation, differing on how much weight one gives to the divine and human will on salvation. If we draw a spectrum of soteriology, on the left are Pelagianism, Semi-Pelagianism, and (Classical, Wesleyan, and Modern) Arminianism, and on the right are Moderate, Classical, and Hyper-Calvinism. Historical church councils have judged the three left-side opinions as heretical. But what is the biblical and balanced position? We analyze the ways to build theology from the Bible and propose a satisfying solution.

The result of salvation is the Church. The doctrine of the Church is ecclesiology. It involves (1) the doctrine of Sanctification and Practical Theology; (2) the definitions of the Universal Church and the Local Churches; (3) the rites of the Church; (4) the governments of the Church; (5) the dogma, councils, and creeds of the Church (the boundaries of faith); (6) the history of the denominations; and, (7) the Church-and-State relationship. The Doctrine about Sin is called Harmatiology. Most people have never heard of the name, and the topic is rarely mentioned in the statement of faith of any church, even though sin is the central problem for humanity. ABC’s Statement of Faith is fully articulated concerning the doctrine of salvation (Soteriology), as is the case with most evangelical churches. The complete process of salvation actually includes: (1) Justification (an event - salvation of the spirit); (2) Sanctification (a process - salvation of the soul); and (3) Glorification (an event - salvation of the body). What evangelicals commonly term “salvation” is Justification; it is the acceptance of Redemption through Christ Jesus; it happens at the same time as the Regeneration by the Holy Spirit and the Adoption by the Father.

Attributes of God are the characteristics of God described in understandable terms to men. There are several classes or groups such as existential, power, and moral attributes. There are different aspects that need balance such as greatness and goodness, justice and mercy. “God” means different things to different people. People may regard money, idols, self, great men, Lucifer, or Yahweh as their God. “God” can be a spirit or beings with immortal bodies. What differs between biblical Theism and all other “isms” in theology is not just in the existence (vs. Atheism) of God, the number of Gods within or without the godhead (vs. Polytheism, Pantheism; and vs. Unitarian Monotheism such as Judaism and Islam), but the work of God (vs. Deism). This last category mostly concerns the moral nature of God. Two essential questions follow: (1) Is God not only great in power but also holy in morality? (2) Is there a balance of unity vs. diversity, relations vs. fellowship in Trinitarianism?

More differences were because of interpretation than because of textual variance. Is there a right way of reading the Bible? Is it possible to find a singular original meaning of the author(s), human and divine? The Church has found a system of rules of interpretation in order to achieve that. It is more urgent than ever to consult these rules, for they came from the experiences of dealing with heresies that resulted from erroneous readings.
Some English Bible translations (KJV, NKJV) seem to have a “fuller” text in the New Testament than others (e.g. NASB, NIV, ESV etc.). The KJV-Only Movement claims that the “briefer” New Testaments are incomplete, and those who read the modern translations are heretical in denying the deity of Christ etc. Is that true?

The boundary of the Old Testament seems to be fluid. The Protestant Bible has the same number of books as the Jews. The Catholic Bible has 8 more books, and the Orthodox Bible has 16 more. The Apocrypha is the name for the group of books counted as “deuterocanonical” by some religious denominations but not by all. The OT Pseudepigrapha is another collection of books not claimed as canonical by any denominations but were quoted or regarded as authoritative. Are they the inspired word of God? Is our Old Testament complete?

Modern mainstream academia is committed to naturalism and makes imaginary theories on the formation of the Old Testament, generally making it late and collective in authorship, focusing on the two foundations of OT and NT (Torah and Gospels), and the two major bridges between them (Isiah and Daniel). What Do We Believe about the Bible? Part 1: Introduction
Postmodernism is born from the complaint that medieval dogma and modern machines robbed full humanity. While the diagnosis is agreeable, the prescription involves shameless inconsistency. Man-made dogmas (e.g. climate change) are followed religiously; man-made machines (e.g. smart phones) have become indispensable. Full humanity cannot live without mind and doctrines; the difference is in the source. The Bible is where men get doctrines about God. This is why Bibliology should be the first of the ten doctrines of systematic theology. A few months passed after Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians. He was busy dealing with the challenging situation in Corinth, but he heard enough and was compelled to write 2 Thessalonians. His tone changed from warm, appreciating, and encouraging, to seemingly cold, admonishing, and warning. The two tones seemed to be the parentheses necessary for dealing with any “end-time fever.”

Why Did Paul Have a Clear Conscience (1 Thess 2:1-16)

Introduction to the Thessalonians: Historical Background for the “Eschatological Letters”
From the second century B.C. to the second century A.D., the prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27 had been variously interpreted by the Jews, resulting in many expected dates for the Messiah. The Maccabeans, Julius Caesar, Herod the Great, Jesus of Nazareth, Herod Agrippa I, the Zealots, and Bar Kokhba, each fit certain calculation, and each failed in a sense. Who is the Messiah, and when shall he come (again), were the questions at the day. The two letters to the Thessalonians were written under the expectation of a soon second coming of Christ. Paul taught them to have a warm heart together with a cool mind.

Men must rest from both work and enjoyment. The Old Testament gives a chain of Sabbaths, teaching that rest must be regular and pointing to an ultimate rest. Christians already have the ultimate rest in Christ; we only need to have a regular life, though freed from the sabbatical laws.

Jonah obeyed God’s commission and preached the message of judgment; to his surprise the Gentile king and people repented, and were spared.
Jonah begrudged over God’s sparing of the Assyrians, who had the potential of oppressing Israel in the future; but God taught him about His heart, left him pondering about God’s greater plan.
Jonah resisted God’s will of reaching out to the gentiles Assyrians, and he went on a path of going down, down, down, till he was in the belly of a fish.
Jonah, who did not respect the lives of the Gentiles, prayed for God to rescue his life; and God granted his petition, so that he might prove his obedience.
