These days, there’s no dirtier word than “divisive,” especially in religious and political circles. Claiming a controversial opinion, talking about our differences, even sharing our doubts can be seen as threatening to the goal of unity. But what if unity shouldn’t be our goal?

In Holy Disunity: How What Separates Us Can Save Us, Layton E. Williams proposes that our primary calling as humans is not to create unity but rather to seek authentic relationship with God, ourselves, one another, and the world around us. And that means actively engaging those with whom we disagree.

Is there a tie between some Christian Theology and abuse? I have started to theorize that this may be the case. That when the church teaches a doctrine that tells women to submit (at times to abuse,) that women's bodies are dangerous, and tells them that they are not qualified to teach or lead—that this may lead to dangerous power differentials.

Today on the podcast Kristen Dumez, professor of history and gender studies at Calvin University, answers my question.

Politics today is heated, and that seems like an understatement.

I don't know about you, but often the last thing I want to do is talk about politics with those who think differently than me. That could lead to me being misunderstood, disrespected, or simply not listening too, not to mention it's exhausting.

But politics is too important not to engage in, and frankly, if you have that option it could be a sign of privilege.

Today on the podcast I talk to Sarah and Beth about how to remain civil with those on the opposite side of the spectrum, and why talking politics matters.

Who grew up constantly believing that their body was too much, or maybe not enough?

Constructed beauty ideals have been making young girls and women feel inadequate for a long time now. And I'm sick of it.

Did you know that most girls in the US begin dieting by the age of 8? Did you know that about 20 million women in the US deal with an eating disorder at some point in their lives?

Women are constantly judged by our bodies, whether they are big or small. Whether or not men would rate us as attractive. If that pantsuit was the best idea for the business presentation. And the constant critiques we get of women running for political office for the way we look.

I do not know a single woman who has struggled with body image. I guess that shouldn't be surprising given the culture we were raised in.

So... let's change the culture by being radically accepting and loving towards our bodies.

This week on the podcast I interview @ashtonvray about the research she did regarding body image on a Christian college campus, and what we can do to love our bodies.
