As a slave Spartacus fought the Romans for equality and freedom, 6,000 of his men died on a Roman cross and equality was not grasped. 100 years later Jesus died on a Roman cross to give us all true equality. Today we still struggle with equality and freedom. Its been an issue since the garden of eden. People like Spartacus have worked at eqaulity but we are flawed and we will never get it right, apart from God. A great place to see eqaulity is in a little letter that Paul wrote from prison to his friend named Philemon about a Roman slave named Onesimus. After Solomon dies he turns the kingdom over to his son Reheboam. Reheboam listened to foolish council. This caused an adversary Jereboam to rise up and divide the kingdom, a kind of civil war takes place that will affect Israel until captivity.
King David dies and his son Solomon takes the throne. Solomon has an intriguing rise to the throne and reign as king. We will cover his life as we look at 1 Kings and in the 3 books accredited to his name, Song of Solomon, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes.
We might not agree with the methods but we understand the message. Equality. Since creation, man has worked at eqaulity but we are flawed and we are not good at it. But God is. That is why Jesus came and equality and family is something Jesus produced. A great place to see this is in a little letter that Paul wrote from prison to his friend named Philemon.
This Sunday we finish the book of 2 Samuel. One more mistake from David, one more lesson, one more picture of the Gospel. Join us as we see David make the journey from his own guilt to Gods grace and a life of gratitude.
2 Samuel 23 tells us of Davids "Mighty Men". In these verses we learn their names and some of their exploits. These guys were instrumental in putting King David on the throne and keeping him there. You and I fight for and with the Son of David, King Jesus. Join us tomorrow as we are encouraged by these warriors to be Mighty men and Mighty women for our King Jesus!
2 Samuel 23 tells us the "The last words of David"... There are a lot of famous last words. What does this “man after Gods own heart” have to say?
In 2 Samuel 22 we see the heart of David. This chapter is a song, a prayer, its so good its made public in Psalm 18. Its David at his best, pouring his heart out to God, thanking God for His faithfulness through Davids lifetime... this chapter is why we love to learn from David and learn how a "man after Gods own heart" sings to the Lord!
2 Samuel 21 tells us a story that happened sometime during Davids reign as King. God is judging the nation because of a covenant that was broken with the Gibeonites. They are guilty of breaking the covenant and atonement must be made. Join us tomorrow morning @calvarychapelyorbalinda as we see how David deals with this problem and how it reminds us of our guilt and our atonement.
In 2 Samual 20 David returns to Jerusalem only to have to deal with another rebellion. He acts swiftly. He sends his troops to deal with the rebel leader. Along the way we are reminded of just how unstable Joab is, we also read how Joab's unstable actions are kept at bay by the quick thinking of a wise woman from the city of Abel.
David's forces won the battle and now its time to head back into Jerusalem. Just as when he left Jerusalem he encounters alot of interesting characters along the way back to Jerusalem. It reminds me of a gauntlet, and David just has to get through it. And Davids graceful behavior reminds me of the character of our Lord Jesus when the multitudes would press in on him.
Absalom is dead. Word of his death is being sent to David by a foot messenger. The text draws our attention to two men who run with the message to king David. One messenger failed to give the message and other properly delivered the message. These simple verses remind us of a great purpose we have. A message that we are required to run with and a moment that we will stand before the King based upon that message!
In 2 Samuel 18 we see the defeat and death of Absolom. He was Davids son, and he tried to overthrow David. Absolom had a lot of potential, he had a lot going for him. But in the end Absolom was all about himself. Do I have an Absolom attitude? Are there things I can learn about life from him?
In 2 Samuel 15 we read King David's own son Absolom raises an army, declares himself King of Israel, and puts David on the run. During the rebellion our attention is drawn to a particular man who joins Absolom by the name of Ahithophel. He was the wisest counselor in all the land and a close friend of David. But when the opportunity presents itself, Ahithophel jumps at the chance to join the rebellion and kill David. Why?
With Davids son Absolom still banished, Joab takes it upon himself to bring Absolom home. He manipulates the situation to get David to bring his banished son home. David brings Absolom home and banishes him to his house... More problems and more manipulation take place. Where is God in all this?
2 Samuel 13 is the catalyst for a series of events that dominate the rest of this book. Davids oldest son Amnon falls in love with his half sister Tamar and tries to force her to do the same. Tamars brother Absolom ends up killing Amnon... in the coming chapters we continue to see things unravel to the point of Absolom taking the throne from his father David. It gets crazy, it starts in chapter 13!
David is still reeling from the sin he committed. At this point, Bathsheba has given birth and the child is sick. David is praying, fasting, interceding, for the life of the child. What things drive me to prayer? To fast? To wait on the Lord? What do I do when His answer is no?
2 Samuel tells us the story of David. Its a narrative. Psalms tells us what David was thinking in his mind, what he was feeling in his heart. We learned in 2 Samuel of Davids great sin and great fall.
Up to this point David has been a great example of "A man after Gods own heart". That saying now takes a new turn as we begin to see the decline of David. Nathan confronts David on his Adultery and Murder... How will "A man after Gods own heart" deal with, and come out of a horrible failure in his moral character?
The nation of Ammon (modern day Jordan) is a neighbor to Israel and dwell in territory that is considered the "Promised Land". Chapter 10 tells us a story about how the nation of Ammon picked a fight with David. This war with Ammon will be the background for chapters 10-12. The story of David and Bathsheba will take place within this war, Uriah dies in this war. Nevertheless the conquest of Ammon is a key part part of Israel moving forward and taking the "Promised Land", which is something they have really struggled with till now.
In 2 Samuel 9 we learn the story of Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Davids friend Jonathon. He was crippled but he was also part of the old regime. As a new King and leader of a new regime it would be custom for David to eliminate Mephibosheth as a rival to the throne. Instead David honors Mephibosheth and honors the promise he made to his old friend Jonathon.
Now that the Ark of the covenant is in Jerusalem David wants to build a permanent home for the Ark. He shares his plan with Nathan the prophet and they proceed to move ahead with the project. The problem is God has a different plan, a bigger plan, a better plan. A plan that affects us all!
As David ushers the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem he cuts loose. David has a moment of worship before the Lord with leaping, singing, dancing, and his wife stands in disappointment. What kind of thoughts does worship bring to your mind? What kind of emotions?
In 2 Samuel we learn that David has established his capital city in Jerusalem. The next thing is to bring the Ark of the Covenant (the symbol of Gods presence with Israel) to Jerusalem. Unfortunately David fails to transport it Gods way according to Gods Word.
