Life can get a stagnant so try one of these life experiments this week:

  • Attempt to begin a conversation with a stranger
  • Take only cold showers for a week
  • Sit in a public place and stare straight ahead for ten minutes
  • Make a rule that you’ll reach for your gym clothes as soon as the alarm goes off (no snooze button!)
  • Go to work a different way or by a different form of transportation
  • Completely rearrange the furniture in your living room or bedroom
  • Vary a workout routine by choosing exercises based on dice rolls
  • Join a free foreign language meetup (visit meetup.com and search for your choice of language)
  • Offer a room of your house for rent on Airbnb.com
  • Offer your couch to a traveler on couchsurfing.com
  • In a recurring meeting, deliberately choose a different seat
  • If you’re usually active in meetings, determine to speak less. If you’re usually silent, speak up!
  • Post “Anything I can help you with?” on Facebook, Twitter, or wherever you gather with friends online. Respond to as many answers as you can.
  • Laugh out loud in public at something that isn’t funny. See what happens.
  • Bring dog treats to the park and give them to strangers (primarily the ones who have dogs)
  • Stop carrying an umbrella when it rains. You might get wet, but chances are you won’t melt

A life quest ends up being bigger than a simple project because its something specific to work on over time—an endeavor that is fun, challenging, and meaningful.

Here are the characteristics you should use to identify your quest:

  • A clear goal that can be defined
  • A way to measure progress
  • A sense of calling or mission
  • Sacrifice… or at least effort

When you find something you believe in, you should put everything you’ve got into it, which means you may face some rejection along the way.

Embrace rejection. When doing something new, not everyone will accept it and that's okay! You need to become comfortable with failure (easier said then done) and keep pushing forward.

Give Rejection Therapy a try. The goal of the game is to ask for something and have the request denied, stretching your comfort zone. If you ask for something and get it, that’s a bonus—but the day’s round of Rejection Therapy isn’t over, because you ultimately have to be rejected prior to moving on to the next day. Consider doing your rejection therapy on camera just to hold yourself more accountable.

Everyone has a calling. Many people see the promised land but then search for reasons to stay away. There is a large category of people that have lives that are relatively satisfying, but waiting beyond their comfort zones is something better. Whether it’s writing, crafting, or saving the world, submitting to a purpose greater than yourself can prove fulfilling as long as you choose to follow Your Passion

Embracing a calling is about being the best at something, or doing something that you feel no one else can do, this isn’t a competitive thing where you have to beat someone else, but you should be the best according to your own standard.

Thanks for listening!

Are you discontent?

Here are some questions to ask yourself to find out if you’re discontent.

  • Have you dreamed of escaping to a new life?
  • Have you thought of changing the world?
  • Have you said to yourself: “There must be more to life than this?”
  • Have you felt that strange sense of alienation?
  • Have you felt frustration that’s hard to pin down?

When discontent sets in, it’s time to make some changes. Listen in to learn more!

There’s an Adventure Waiting for You, Too. Most people pursuing a quest are ordinary people, in the sense that they don’t have special powers or abilities. The people pursuing or accomplishing big quests are successful not because of innate talent, but because of their choices and dedication. Listen in to hear more.

View Details

Adventure is for everyone. We must choose to embrace a quest, and we must choose to live for adventure.

How to find a quest in your life:

  • A quest has a clear goal and a specific end point.
    • A quest must begin and then end
  • A quest presents a clear challenge.
    • A quest requires something to be overcome
    • A quest doesn’t need to be impossible but it also shouldn’t be easy
  • A quest requires a sacrifice of some kind.
    • To pursue a big dream, you must give something up along the way
    • Sometimes the sacrifice is obvious in the beginning and sometimes it’s only obvious later
  • A quest is often driven by a calling or sense of mission.
    • A calling is commonly expressed as a deep sense of internal purpose
    • People who pursue quests feel driven, pushed, or otherwise highly motivated to keep going
  • A quest requires a series of small steps and incremental progress toward a goal.
    • You don’t simply arrive at the holy grail the day after you set out to find it (if you do, it’s likely not the holy grail or a quest)

A quest is a journey toward something specific, with a number of challenges throughout and they likely require a series of logistical steps and some kind of personal growth.

What’s one belief you have about yourself that keeps you from finding and following your passion? Do you think you’re not worthy of doing something you enjoy? Do you think you have nothing to share? Do you think you don’t have enough time?

Your beliefs control you attitudes, fears, and productivity.

Roadblocks: What are the ideas that are trying to stop you from living a passionate life? Example: Maybe you’re afraid to pursue your passion because you believe it involves quitting your job. The idea of quitting your job is so radical that it holds you back from pursuing happiness, but you don’t NEED to star there. You just have to be willing to start.

Nothing big needs to happen. Have the mindset of introducing 10 minutes of passion into your life each day.

Time to write: Don’t even think about your passion when you start writing this time… just start by asking yourself “What would you have to believe to live a passionate life?” What ideas would you hold as true to follow your heart? While you write, this will help you identify what’s holding you back.

View Details

Before I started helping people find their passions, I was asked by high schoolers, college students, and even seasoned veterans about what decisions they should make professionally to be happiest… I even talked a few 40+ year olds into quitting their jobs and taking on more fulfilling roles. The point is, I had people already asking me for help in pursuing there passion but… I dealt with imposter syndrome: I was too afraid to start teaching because I figured there were already so many experts out there. But finally I went for it and it worked. It was just more proof that I was the one holding myself back from doing something I loved.

The question in the title is simple: The answers may not feel feasible at times and that’s okay. But ask yourself, what do your friends ask you about? What question do you find yourself answering more often than normal? Don’t dismiss anything and follow the thread.

Roadblocks: Be aware of any mental roadblocks that negate your findings.

Time to write: Begin by answering the question: “What do people come to me for advice about?”

Prompts:

  • When people ask me for advice, they generally ask about…
  • I hate helping people with…
  • I feel fulfilled when I help people…

Brandon: "How do you guys stay motivated all week? I'm always amped up and excited to get the week going but then... when Tuesday and Wednesday roll around I lose that fire to accomplish great things."

We have all felt this way. It's hard to stay motivated day after day... especially if you don't have an "end" goal to work towards.

Welcome to Pocket Thoughts! Today, the boys and I talk in great detail about what strategies we use to focus up and put in the needed effort to accomplish great things. Thanks for listening:)

Once you’re living a passionate life and everything is perfect, what will you do and how will you behave? I’ve consistently fallen into the trap of thinking I needed something to be happy before I could be happy.

I thought I needed to build a big business prior to being happy... I’m energetic and love having fun with people but when I was pursuing a big business, I felt ashamed not reaching my goals, I didn’t want to hangout with people because I didn’t feel like I deserved it... Essentially I have made a formula for my misery.

The goal is to switch it around. What if I were Y (happy) even if X didn’t happen? What does that look like? What do I do every day during the journey of building a large company to be happy?

Questions: We’re all waiting for something, so what are you waiting for? What’s stopping you from doing what you want to do? What’s stopping you from being happy right now?

Time to write: Start by answering, "What will I do when I’ve found my passion?" Write an answer to this question for 5-10 minutes. Answering other questions along the way, like:

  • When I find my passion, I will finally…
  • When I’m living the life of my dreams, I will…
  • I haven’t found my passion yet, so it’s okay for me to…
  • For me it’s important to find my passion, because…

How will you know that you are living a passionate life? What measurables can you tie to this success? What are the signs that will tell you that you’ve done it? Quick tip: the answer is rarely money, wealth, fame. The answer usually goes beyond those items. Most people think the answer is money but they are often wrong! Happiness, joy and passion come from the inside.

The goal is to be happy right now. Ask yourself “what’s stopping you from being happy right now?” The answer is usually tied to ideas, beliefs, and thoughts that you’ve picked up from others throughout the years. Just remember that following your passion should not be a thing in the future.

Roadblocks: Be aware of your own and other peoples assumptions about passion. Don’t be too vague when answering the question. For example: "I started waking up every morning refreshed. I couldn’t fall asleep right away at night because I was too excited to the next day. My life felt like a smooth ride, even with challenges along the way."

Write about the following prompts: When I find my passion, my life will be… When I find my passion, I will feel… I will know I’ve found my passion when…

What is your definition of passion?

This question is about diving into what ideas, beliefs and thoughts you have around the word passion. My definition: It’s about waking up, feeling excited to be alive, and feeling grateful to be doing what I love. It’s jumping out of bed, and being fully ready to tackle the day. It’s living through your heart, feeling fulfilled, because you know where you need to be.

Possible roadblocks: Discomfort. You will have to go through what society has told you passion is, and then uncover what it truly means to you, because that the only thing that matters

Time to write: “How do you define passion?” What ideas, thoughts and beliefs do you have around passion? Write without censoring yourself. If you run out of things to say, just keep writing whatever pops up in your mind. Example: “This exercise is super strange and I’ve complete run out of things to say. And I don’t know why but I was just thinking of a pink turtle racing a green flamingo. Hmmm.”

Prompts: Passion for me means… Passion for my friends and family means… When I’m living a passionate life, it looks… When I’m following my passion, I feel…

You've figured out the most brilliant idea!

So you grab your best friend and your brother to start the company together.

In your excitement to get started, you and your two cofounders fail to do your due diligence by learning more about each others expertise, motivations, and resources-- and to make matters worse, you scurry along and divide your equity into even thirds. After all, this is the most obvious thing to do because you all love each other and you want to make sure everyone is treated fairly...

Two months later, the company is booming, but there's one small problem... you realize your best friend has barely touched the project since you started. To make matters worse, when you bring up the issue, your best friend informs you that he will be leaving the company and deserves to keep his 1/3 share in the venture.

Now you and your brother are essentially doing all the work, while your best friend gets paid an equal share of the profits. Still excited about jumping into a partnership without learning the basics of forming a strong cofounder relationship? Maybe you are still excited to jump in without learning more... but I can guarantee you that some day you won't be happy about it.

"BUT THIS WON'T HAPPEN TO ME."

I hear the above statement all the time, and yet... two-thirds of startups end up failing because of disagreements between founders. Because founding isn't as simple as drawing up an agreement and shaking hands over it. In fact, there are eight steps required to build a cofounding team that will win the entrepreneurial game.

  1. Identifying what you need in a cofounder.

  2. Preselecting your cofounder through a series of interviews.

  3. Assigning the proper roles and responsibilities to your cofounder.

  4. Taking regular, weekly/monthly "Cofounder Dates."

  5. Splitting equity the RIGHT way.

  6. Creating an air-tight Founders' Collaboration Agreement for protection.

  7. Negotiating and learning from cofounder conflict.

  8. Fixing cofounder mistakes to avoid startup fatality.

This course will teach you EVERYTHING you need to know prior to jumping into the world of entrepreneurship with a cofounder! Don't go into a founder relationship blind... use the experiences of people who have done it countless times and follow a proven roadmap to improve your chances of cofounder success.

I have two questions for the boys today:

1) What makes you insecure and do you know why?

2) If you worked for the next 365 days and you made $1 million dollars at the end of the year, how would you feel, what would you do with the money, and how would your life change from it's current state?

Also, Brandon shares a wild idea that we may consider doing!

A lot of bragging going on the last couple of days, but I just can't help it! The lovely wife and I worked on creating a new online store for our brick and mortar store Seedlings Gifts & Books, and she (my wife) was able to convert on three sales in the first 24 hours. Which is completely awesome but also a little humbling because I don't remember getting my first online sale for roughly six months after launching my first company... ouch. I guess I just found another thing she's better than me at!

Also, I talk through what's going on with Three Timbers and the major scare I had last night when it came to the new Three Timbers launch. Lastly, one of my favorite parts of the week happens tonight: The boys and I will be recording our weekly podcast! Listen in tomorrow for the full show:)

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT EITHER! This weekend was definitely shocking to me... I had over 12,000 students purchase my first course in 48 hours. This isn't an episode full of bragging but I did want to update all of you on the crazy progression that occurred in the world of Educating Entrepreneurs since we talked last.

Also, I wanted to take a moment to talk to you about dealing with hate, because when you do something unique or special, people usually respond with hate. I definitely got to witness some of that this weekend, but I kind of like it:)

The boys are back and Big Joe has a question for all of us:

"For me, there is almost never a time that I am not thinking about work. Issues in the present, issues in the future, and the overload of tasks that need to be completed during the next day/week/month. It's not healthy or a sustainable way of living. The stress is constant and difficult to control.

How do you handle the enormous amounts of stress each of us put upon ourselves?"

Great question Joe. Listen in to hear what each of us do to handle the pressure we put on ourselves.

Oh, one last thing! Remember last week, when we talked about our Zone of Geniuses? We ended the show by telling Brandon to be prepared with a new Zone of Genius this week and shockingly, he wasn't prepared. So, next week, if he doesn't have a Zone of Genius at the ready, we'll be shaving his head... just a quick side note for you:)

View Details

Let me start by saying I love my wife like crazy and I would never do anything to harm her:) But, we did learn yesterday that when both of us work a crazy amount in the same place, our level of irritation seems to rise a little bit as well. Beyond that, we learned that crazy hours can put a large amount of stress on our bodies and minds without even noticing. We started to lose focus on the most important part of doing business in the first place... We do business to improve our lives. We take on extra projects for fun and excitement. And non of it matters if it brings on contempt, frustration, or hatred.

I don't know if this will make sense to most of you but I figured it was important to share anyways, so there you go.

View Details

The offer we have worked reasonably hard on was just denied... so I figured what better time to make a quick episode on how I'm actually feeling after "failing." Don't worry, I don't feel all that bad. But it definitely leads to a plethora of options:

1: Quit because somebody said "no."

2: Emotionally move forward by making a much higher offer because I want the house and I've put work into figuring out how to remodel and rent it.

3: Be a good investor, think logically, give it some time, keep looking for other options, and NEVER give up no matter how many denials I receive.

What option do you think I should take?

View Details

It was a busy day.

1: We are finally making an offer on a brand new real estate project. I don't want you to get too excited because we're definitely going in with a low offer, but I do hope you can learn a little something about how we approach negotiations.

2: We opened Three Timbers roughly 72 hours ago and we already have three clients. Lucky us:)

3: We are adding an online presence to our brick and mortar retail store!

It's a lot of work all coming together at the same time, and it will take a whole lot more work to pull it all off. But I know one thing, if I keep trying to become a little better than I was yesterday, all of this stuff will work eventually.

Things are seriously getting crazy! So... welcome to diary entry number one:)

I received a question from a producer the other day about what my "Zone of Genius" is. My first reaction was: "Oh crap, I have no idea." My second reaction was: "This must be a trick question because I honestly don't believe I'm a genius in anything. I mean, how could I be a genius if there are people like Elon Musk roaming this wonderful planet?" My third reaction: "Well, I better say something, so I went on to discuss my true genius when it comes to leadership and motivation."

Therefore, I figured I'd put Brandon and Joey on the spot and find out exactly what their "Zone of Genius" was. It was fascinating:)

Also, we talk about our weeks, a couple new projects, and a whole lot more!

Some of my fellow entrepreneurs will relate to this one... do you ever have people get mad at you for working all the time? I sure do. And I realized something last night, it's neither my fault nor there fault. When I really thought about it, I realized I put in an absurd amount of time to produce very few tangible results in the present moment. Whether it's real estate investing or building businesses, I usually have to wait years for the payout, yet I still go to work every day for 12-16 hours (unless I'm on vacay, which I love).

Hmmm... what else. Oh ya, you'll also hear me discuss my weekend plans and who you all picked to stay on the show: Joey or Brandon.

Greatest setbacks:

Bobby spent time at an after-school program for a learning disability.

Brandon struggles to define exactly what would make him happy professionally and personally.

Joey deals with a hellish hip problem that can leave him "crippled" when it flairs up.

Stop making excuses about being born with an ability to be great or not. Develop habits over the next 66 days and witness the impact you start to make on the world.

When I think about starting a business, I really can only think of one non-negotiable, and that non-negotiable is directly tied to your cofounder. Before even starting a company it is a non-negotiable that you learn more about your cofounders personal life, financial motivations, and goals, while also making sure that cofounder balances your inefficiencies. Lastly, you need to sit down with that cofounder and come up with an equity split that matches what each of you bring to the table! I've been lucky enough to create 15 companies by the age of 26. Some have failed, some have done alright, and some still exist. The biggest difference I've identified between the companies that have failed and the companies that have succeeded is directly correlated to my ability to lead. In today's episode I share the good and bad leadership skills I displayed in my company successes and failures.

I recently started thinking about the importance of company culture and a startups persona. One of the most common questions I receive is the following: "Bobby, do I have what it takes to be an entrepreneur?" My response every time: "YES!"

It's that easy. Each of us have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. As long as you are willing to put in the time, effort and constantly learn, you will "eventually" build something great. Key word: EVENTUALLY.

Entrepreneurship is a long journey. You'll need to be willing to put it all on the line, day after day, year after year, with very little payout in return. Learn to love every step of the journey and then, and only then, will you start to truly succeed.

Yesterday I received the following question: "Do you have any tips for me on how to get conversations with hard to reach CEOs?" I certainly do! With every company I've built to date, it's been imperative that I speak to the ultra-successful to propel my company in the right direction. The problem is, the ultra-successful are always hard to reach because of their gatekeepers (executive assistant) but I've found a few sure fire ways to get in contact with your desired "target". Listen in to learn how.

I've always heard and read that it is okay to ruin relationships along your path to success... It's always been justified from the perspective of: "Some people will hold you back and you have to eliminate those relationships from your life." I get it. But it's also a dangerous concept to teach. Because some of us (me), start to justify putting success before others. Unfortunately, life is too short to push people aside. Life is too short to think that you'll be able to repair that relationship in the future.

I know I've made this mistake a lot... So listen in and hear how Shaquille O'neal changed my perspective on the importance of relationships.
