An off-chance conversation sent me down the rabbit hole of the psychomotor domain. Why is it that this domain doesn't get as much attention as the cognitive domain? So, I did some research and sifted through the origins of this domain. How did we get here? Who created it? Were there any signs that this domain was going to be looked down upon from the start? There are certain types of phrases that can trigger an instructional designer. Learning styles, using “understand” in learning objectives, cognitive overload, last minute stakeholder changes, and more are enough to drive the best instructional designer crazy. Over the years, I’ve had to channel these grievances into more productive ways with sharing best practices. I need to take you behind the scenes for a moment to discuss a huge issue within the instructional design field.
There is a disconnect between instructional design degrees and real world expectations. It’s been a trend I’ve been monitoring for years, and it only seems to be getting worse. Students are graduating with these degrees and don’t know how to apply the lessons into the real world. They aren’t ready and don’t feel confident to take their next steps. When asked why, I hear that they spent two to four years learning about theories, models, and processes, but did not gain experience in practicing them. The topics of working with subject matter experts, managing projects, building a portfolio, and career guidance never even came up in some of these degrees, yet they advertise on their websites that they prepare students for a competitive job market.
On today’s podcast, I’m going to share with you what I’ve been hearing directly from instructional design students. The hope is that we can acknowledge their thoughts and make changes to fix this problem now before it gets any worse. You’ll also hear about institutions who are doing everything right to prepare their students for the real world and I give a shout out to a few of them.

I love being an instructional designer, but at the end of the day, it's still a job. Just like with any other career, there are good days and bad days. Today’s episode is a special one because we have an amazing guest who is going to be talking about two relevant topics in instructional design land. The first is Camtasia. It’s the signature video editing tool that instructional designers use and that employers are looking for. We talk all about how to develop your skills with this tool and how to impress potential employers. Our second topic is voice acting. I have seen so many postings about voiceover work lately in the instructional design community and yet I know nothing about this. I didn’t know how people got into this line of work or how they found the opportunities to showcase this skill. Luckily for us, Alex Mitts is an expert in both areas and he shares with us all of his tips. You’ll hear about how a former teacher became an instructional designer and then got into voice acting work for Netflix. It’s a crazy story and I know you are going to get a ton out of this episode.

“What does an instructional designer actually do?” A quick Google search will pop up some amazing videos, podcasts, and blogs about a day in the life of an instructional designer from a corporate perspective or a freelance perspective. I didn’t see the same types of results though for higher education, and I have an educated guess as to why: it’s ridiculously hard to describe the typical day.
In today’s episode, I break down a day in the life of an instructional designer at MIT and share a few tips for new IDs thinking about the higher ed field.

On today’s episode, we are talking all about public speaking. Public speaking is a skill you must practice as a instructional designer. Its not a common skill to hear about in our field, but the more I was growing in my career, the more and more I was talking in front of a crowd. If you think about it, public speaking is in other areas of our lives like interviews, teaching, giving a presentation on our courses, presenting at conferences. Simply put, I believe instructional designers will be doing more in public speaking for years to come. To help us unpack all of this, I needed to find a expert in the field and luckily, I’m friends with Dr. Dawn DiPeri. She’s a learning designer at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and the Owner of East End Advertising. Besides the fact that she’s a learning nerd like us, she even did her dissertation on communication skills for online learners.

Going back to school is really challenging as an adult. I don’t think that’s a secret. You have to overcome issues with time management, work life balance, and other commitments. It doesn’t matter if it’s an associates, bachelors, or masters, all of these are challenging. Going back to school for a doctorate during a pandemic though is on completely different level, however, there are those crazy people out there who are finding ways to continue writing their dissertations while avoiding burn out, and one of those people is my friend, Ryan Ivers. Ryan is a leader in competency-based education and online instructor at SNHU and he’s also a doctoral student at Northeastern University. He’s projected to finish by 2021, and I asked him to come on the show and reveal just exactly how he’s doing this.
