Today's podcast episode is Gamified Design Thinking. Gamification is defined as the application of typical elements of game playing to other areas of activity to encourage engagement. Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. We'll be discussing smashing these two together with our guest Dee Lanier. Originally from Southern California, “Sociologist turned Technologist,” Dee Lanier is a passionate and energetic educator and learner with over a decade of instructional experience on the K-12 and collegiate level. Dee holds Undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Sociology with special interests in education, race relations, and inequality. Dee is an award winning presenter, TEDx Speaker, Google Certified Trainer and Innovator that specializes in creative applications for mobile devices and Chromebooks, low-cost makerspaces, and gamified learning experiences. Dr. Ai Addyson-Zhang is a professor, blogger, live-streamer, and digital learning consultant. She received her M.A. from Syracuse University and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, both of which are located in the United States. Dr. Marialice B.F.X. Curran is the founder and CEO of the Digital Citizenship Institute. As a mother and a connected educator, she has served as an associate professor, middle school teacher, principal and library media specialist. As a pioneer in digital citizenship, she developed and created the first 3-credit digital citizenship course for teachers in the United States. She co-founded the digital citizenship chat in Twitter (2011) and the Digital Citizenship Summit (2015). She chairs the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) digital citizenship PLN and is a researcher, keynote and TEDxYouth speaker. An entrepreneur and puppeteer at the age of 11, Dr. Curran's experiences include world traveler with particular interest in the creative arts, middle level education, special education, teacher education and educational technology. Dr. Curran is committed to promoting social good using social media and technology. She believes in a community-driven approach to educating and empowering digital citizens to create solutions in local, global and digital communities. Her mission is to turn negatives into positives and help to transform participants into designers, creative thinkers, global collaborators, problem solvers and justice-oriented digital citizens. Valerie Lewis is a wife to a soul singer and mother of 3 children: Carsyn (11), Xander (8), and Bella (4). She is an educator of 18 years in the field with her journey beginning at the elementary level and currently stemming into the secondary level. She has served in private and public settings and across the states of FL, MD, and for the last 12 years in GA and works particularly with students with learning disabilities. She is dedicated to the transformation of learning through engagement for ALL students. She holds a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Oakwood University (Huntsville, AL), a Master’s in Special Education from Howard University (Washington, D.C.) and recently her Education Specialist in Leadership from Liberty University (Lynchburg, VA). She is currently transitioning into the role of Assistant Principal where she can further support and advocate for the needs of students with disabilities. Her philosophy is that One Size Fits One and learning has to be activated in authentic and meaningful ways with the assistance of “the village”. Tara Linney is an award-winning Innovative Educational Technology Coach, recognized for her work in teaching computer programming, global collaborations in education, and educational coaching. As a Coach, Linney has guided educators on developing interdisciplinary learning opportunities, allowing their student to leverage prior knowledge in the learning of new concepts. Part of Linney’s recent work includes integrating Sustainable Development Goals into education, finding places of overlap within the C3 Framework, NGSS, and Common Core State Standards; using ISTE Student Standards to support the “how” in the learning process. Kimberly Eckert is the 2018 Louisiana Teacher of the year and is certified in English, Special Education and as a Reading Specialist. She is committed to empowering students to become stronger self-advocates and agents of their own learning by connecting them to their personal passions. Kimberly has served as a Mentor and Master Teacher through the Teacher and Student Advancement Program (TAP) and as an instructional coach before returning to the classroom to better understand the needs of her students. She has been recognized previously as WBR Middle School Teacher of the Year, LACUE Regional Middle School Teacher of the Year, WBR High School Teacher of the Year, and LACUE Regional high School Teacher of the Year. She was also selected as Kagan Scholarship Winner and served as a Discovery Educator Network Star.
