Emma Snyder is the owner and operator of The Ivy Bookshop, Baltimore's premier independent bookstore and community literary hub. A Baltimore native, Emma spent years shaping the national literary landscape as the Executive Director of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation in Washington, D.C. After earning her MFA in Fiction from the University of Wisconsin, she returned home to take the helm of The Ivy Bookshop in 2017. Under her vision, the bookstore relocated to a historic, park-like three-acre property in Mount Washington, transforming it into a vibrant sanctuary for authors, readers, and community gatherings. Emma has also expanded the Ivy to Bird in Hand Café & Bookstore in Charles Village and a location in Kenilworth, continuing her mission to build deep community connections through the power of books.
Kerry Watson is the executive vice president of public affairs for the Baltimore Orioles, overseeing government affairs and community engagement for the organization. He provides vision and direction for a team that inspires the fanbase, identifies strategic partners, provides impactful community leadership and engagement, and brings positive attention to the organization.
Prior to joining the Orioles in 2023, Kerry served as the regional vice president of government affairs for MGM Resorts International. He first joined MGM Resorts International in 2017. His professional experience prior to that includes serving as senior advisor to Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker and 20 years with the Prince George's County Police Department where he served in various roles including patrol, K9 handler, instructor, and vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Kerry serves on numerous boards, including MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center (chair), Problem-Solving Courts of Prince George's County (president), and the National Center for Victims of Crime (treasurer). He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland, University College.

Mica is the director of Volunteer Recruitment and Partnerships at Thread. Thread harnesses the power of relationships to create a new social fabric of diverse individuals deeply engaged with young people facing the most significant opportunity and achievement gaps. Their community is committed to ending social isolation and building a more equitable culture in which everyone thrives. Thread makes a ten-year commitment to them, beginning in 9th grade. Thread young people are paired with family member volunteers who commit for one year and work together as a team to support them as they work towards self-sufficiency. After nearly two decades as the founder and CEO of Clapp Communications, an award-winning communications firm, Barb made the bold decision in 2019 to sell the company and dedicate herself to a deeper mission: creating career opportunities for those who need them most. Having grown up under difficult circumstances herself, Barb understands firsthand the power of access and support in changing lives.
Since stepping into her role at DWD, Barb has transformed the nonprofit from concept to a full-scale national workforce development organization that has served over 9,000 Dwyer Scholars across five states since inception in 2021. Serving underserved individuals, DWD removes barriers to success by providing person-centered case management, need-based wraparound services—such as transportation, childcare, and housing support—free Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) training, and job placement support.
In this episode we interview Jaz Erenberg. Jaz is a muralist who creates community centric public artwork. Over the last 6 years, her practice has grown through collaboration with communities to build creative ways to make them feel seen and heard throughout the process. Using workshops and events, communities have become an integral part of how she creates public artwork. JC Faulk is the founder of Bmore Community Food. Bmore Community Food feeds vulnerable people across Baltimore City, by rescuing good food that would ordinarily be thrown away, and then supplementing it with fresh meat and non-perishable goods.
This work brings our most vulnerable city residents into the light. They have been isolated and marginalized for far too long. It is the aim of Bmore Community Food to end the suffering caused by food insecurity.

Seawall believes that all facets of the built environment should be used to empower communities, unite our cities, and help launch powerful ideas that create important movements. Since its inception, the company has focused its energy and resources on providing discounted apartments for teachers, collaborative office space for non-profit organizations, workforce housing, community-driven retail, public markets, launchpads for chefs, and creative space for charter schools. Ron was the co-founder and CEO of Tenable Network Security. He helped grow the company to 20,000 customers, raise $300m in venture capital and grow revenues to $100m, setting up the company for an IPO in 2018.

Liz has been a choreographer and a teaching artist in the inner city for around 20 years; she also grew up in poverty which colors the lens through which she creates. Experiencing growing up mixed race in the inner-city regularly inspires her creations; past and present. She is an inter-disciplinary artist focused on the themes of blackness in America, cultural traditions surrounding african american hair and afro-futurism. Liz also provides mural art tours through Baltimore City.
Jeffrey Kent combines dramatic gestures, vivid colors, multiple layers, impasto, and reverse text in his paintings. His struggle with dyslexia (without access to diagnosis and care) is a recurring theme expressed in reverse text. His bricolage artworks consider the history of inequity by manipulating objects of daily life. In his critique of accessibility of the Art World, Kent’s street performances, community investment projects, and multimedia public presentations bring fine art to people who wouldn’t have opportunities to experience it. In addition to his art practices, Kent founded the folded alternative art space in Baltimore, Subbasement Artist Studios (2004-2014); Co-Owner of Unexpected Art Space (2013-2016); Co-founder of Connect+Collect and Director of Promotion and Outreach at BmoreArt (2018-), Artistic Director at The Peale Museum(2019-): designed to create awareness and momentum among art collectors, and promotes a culture of collecting in Baltimore. His artworks are in the collections of Robert W Deutsch Foundation, Hilton Hotels, FTI Consulting Inc., among others.

Kerry Graves serves as the Executive Director of NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore. Tevis Simon is a Baltimore Maryland native and loving mother of one adult daughter and grandson. She received her call to mental health advocacy in 2015 as she battled with the acceptance of her mental health diagnosis. Deciding to become educated rather than afraid of her mental illness, she became a public speaker, mental health mentor, peer recovery specialist and support group facilitator. Tevis is dedicated to her ministry, Walk By Faith Consulting, which supports mental wellness, assisting with recovery in mental health and substance abuse, and overcoming barriers to employment in addition to providing mental health presentations to families and organizations.

Dr. Letitia Dzirasa joined Baltimore City government as the Commissioner of Health in March 2019. Dr. Dzirasa, a Hopkins trained pediatrician, believes that equitable care is basic right for all and will tirelessly advocate for programs that support the overall health and wellbeing of all Baltimore city residents. Dr. Dzirasa’s special interests include obesity management and prevention, trauma informed care in children and adolescents, and expanded use of technology to improve health outcomes.

Regina Reed, MPH is an advocate and organizer for health care justice. Regina is the Policy Manager at the National Health Care for the Homeless Council where she lobbies for national policy change to increase access to health care for vulnerable people. She is also a Board Member with the Baltimore Abortion Fund (BAF). BAF provides financial assistance to people who live in or travel to Maryland for abortion care and uses an intersectional reproductive justice lens to dismantle white supremacy and remove systemic barriers to accessing care.

MOMCares is a postpartum doula program designed to support mothers of color in the NICU who identify themselves as under supported and facing financial stressors. MOMCares provides packaged meals, transportation, bedside support, self care opportunities and child care for older siblings to mothers in need.
Eric Jackson is an organizer, educator, and filmmaker, humbly serving as the visionary and a co-founder of Black Yield Institute, committed to building a movement toward Black Land and Food Sovereignty in Baltimore. Currently, he and his team are committed to a 1.25 acre urban agriculture operation and building a cooperatively-owned grocery store in South Baltimore, while also conducting Black-led research, facilitating political education, and organizing an action network.
Wendy Jeffries is the founding Executive Director of TasteWise Kids. TasteWise Kids empowers kids to think about food in new ways, to explore their own sense of taste, and to build healthy eating habits. Learning directly from farmers, chefs and other food professionals kids learn food comes from and how to prepare their own healthy food options.
Nichole Mooney is the Executive Director and Founder of Black Girls Cook (BGC). BGC is a non-profit organization with a mission to teach adolescent girls of color self-actualization techniques and life-skills through the use of culinary arts and edible gardening.
Hands-on cooking classes are not taught in schools and businesses that teach cooking classes for kids are very expensive. Therefore, girls living in households with limited incomes and don’t have access to healthy food options tend to eat convenience foods which over time impacts their health in a negative way. Food equity and access to cooking classes is a serious issue in inner-city communities and Black Girls Cook aims to alleviate the problem one girl at a time.

She works city-wide with many government departments to align priorities and projects around improving the Baltimore City food environment. Adam is the executive director of Libraries Without Borders and the co-founder of the Digital Equity Coalition. He advocates for dynamic programs that increase access to information by meeting people where they are—whether through digital literacy classes in Laundromats or health workshops in churches. In 2017, he launched the Legal Literacy Initiative to help public libraries deliver legal information to underserved communities across the US. Fagan Harris is the President and CEO of Baltimore Corps, an organization that enlists talented people in public service and social entrepreneurship in Baltimore City. In 2012, after the untimely death of Shantell's one year old daughter and in an effort to prevent parents and families from suffering this same heartbreak, she founded Touching Young Lives, Incorporated; a nonprofit that focuses on the health and well-being of infants and children by offering best practice infant care education and providing families with Portable Alternative Cribs as safe infant sleeping spaces. Portable Alternative Cribs are eco-friendly cardboard boxes, with padding at the bottom, that serves as a safe and alternative sleeping space for parents and caregivers. She has worked with thousands of children in Baltimore with one goal in mind-preventing another untimely infant death.

Caryn is JOTF’s youngest CEO and the first African American female to lead the twenty-three-year organization.
Chris Riehl is the owner and president of Baltimore Rent-A-Tour. Since purchasing the company in 2007 he has worked with hundreds of visitors to the Baltimore region helping create unforgettable experiences. He's passionate about sharing stories that showcase just how special a place Baltimore is and believes that the tourism and hospitality industry plays a key role in supporting jobs and economic development in our city. He's produced a series of "BALTIMOREientation" videos (available on YouTube) highlighting fun and interesting sites around town and even wrote and recorded a song about the city appropriately titled "Baltimore!" Ali and Andres are two of the co-founders of the Holistic Life Foundation. Through their work at the Holistic Life Foundation they have helped develop and pilot yoga and mindfulness programs at public and private schools, drug treatment centers, juvenile detention centers, mental crisis facilities, and retreat centers, nationally and internationally. Antonia came to Homeless Persons Representation Project (HPRP) as its Executive Director in 2007. She is responsible for providing strategic leadership for Maryland's only legal services and advocacy organization dedicated to eliminating homelessness; communicating the mission, programs, and need of its clients to the public; developing and maintaining sound relationships with collaborators, supporters, funders and other stakeholders; providing efficient management and direction to staff and volunteers; ensuring fiscal responsibility and leading fundraising efforts; and reporting to and supporting the work of HPRP's board of directors.

Mary Miller spent 26 years in the investment management industry with T. Rowe Price in Baltimore. She was Director of the Fixed Income Division and also served on the firm's management committee, asset allocation committee, and as a trustee of the T. Rowe Price Foundation. After the financial crisis, Ms. Miller was recruited to serve at the Treasury from 2010 through 2014, first as the Assistant Secretary for Financial Markets and then as the Under Secretary for Domestic Finance under President Obama. Learn all about the Baltimore Jazz scene with saxophonist David Diongue. He moved to Baltimore at age 5 and discovered music through saxophonist and educator Carl Grubbs. With the help of local musicians, Diongue was accepted to Baltimore School for the Arts where he studied with Tim Green and Dr. Chris Ford. Diongue went on to Oberlin Conservatory to study with Gary Barty, critically acclaimed saxophonist and Baltimore native. Additionally, Diongue studied with Jamey Haddad, Jay Ashby, and Dan Wall. Diongue is currently based in Baltimore and has worked with David Murray, Lafayette Gilchrist, and Jamal Moore.
Chris grew up under extremely difficult circumstances. Poverty, drug addiction, and gun violence was the everyday norm in his community. At the age of 17, he was charged with a crime, convicted, and sentenced to natural life in prison. It was during times of isolation that he decided to not only to turn his life around, but to make a difference in the lives of people who currently live in poverty-stricken communities similar to his childhood surroundings. "Many years ago, I committed my life to self-improvement and helping others. I sat in a dark cell and wrote up what I now call my Master Plan. A plan to build a business empire and help others."
