In this episode, triathlon coach and podcast host Todd Malcolm shares why Challenge Roth has become a repeat destination—and a true bucket-list race—for everyday athletes balancing training with real life. With 25+ years in the sport and a coaching philosophy built around sustainable, realistic programming, Todd explains how he first got into Roth (including the ultra-competitive online entry scramble and the "solidarity donation" golden-ticket route that secured him multiple starts).
Todd walks through what makes Roth different: the massive volunteer force, big-race logistics (and the patience required for queues), and the uniquely emotional course experiences—from the canal swim lined with roaring crowds, to the electric intensity of Solar Hill, to the steady rhythm of the canal-side run and the unforgettable stadium finish. He also shares candid travel stories (including a race-morning speeding ticket), practical advice for planning a Germany trip around the event, and why returning year after year reveals new lessons every time.
You'll also hear tips for securing entry (online registration, day-after in-person slots, travel package options, and guaranteed routes), what to expect with changing race-day amenities, and how to approach conditions like warm water and potential no-wetsuit years. Whether you're dreaming of your first Roth or deciding if it's worth the journey, this conversation captures the culture, community, and magic that keep athletes coming back.
Thank you for listening!

James Logan joins Todd for a candid and deeply human conversation about what it means to keep showing up when life keeps knocking you down. After being diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colorectal cancer in April 2024, James went through an intense stretch of treatment—around 27 chemo sessions, five radiation treatments, and major surgeries that removed large portions of his colon and liver and left him with a permanent ileostomy. Through it all, he kept training with one goal in mind: making it to the Kona start line and beating the cutoffs, even after eight Ironman attempts that ended in DNFs, a DNS due to surgery, and setbacks like heat, illness, hydration mistakes, and COVID.
We talk about the brutal reality of chemo fatigue, the constant stop-and-start cycle of training through recovery, and the practical adjustments he's making for Kona—from pacing strategy to sun protection with treatment-related photosensitivity. James also shares how cancer reshaped his priorities, pushed him toward relationships and service, and led him to write Just Keep Tri-ing as both therapy and legacy. All profits from the book are going to the Ironman Foundation until he hits a $100,000 fundraising goal, turning a personal bucket-list dream into a mission bigger than the finish line.

Episode 235 — Do You Smile When You Race?
In this episode, I share reflections from the Wasa Lake Triathlon — a day of cheering, filming, chatting with athletes, and watching how people move through a race. Some athletes smiled. Some didn't. And it made me wonder: what does a smile say about how we experience effort, challenge, and joy in triathlon?
From early‑morning drone flights to PB bagels on a bench, to watching athletes push through the tough moments, this episode explores the subtle power of smiling during a race — and how it might actually change the way we perform.
I'll also share a story from years ago that opened my eyes to what's possible when we stay present, grateful, and human on the race course.
So here's the question: When you race… do you smile?
Happy Training! :)

In this episode, Coach Todd shares his honest reflections on preparing for Challenge Roth with imperfect training and the fears that come with it. He explores why showing up, even when you don't feel ready, can be the most meaningful part of the journey. Through personal stories and soulful insights, Coach Todd invites listeners to embrace imperfection, find joy in the process, and celebrate the adventure of racing for the soul.

Welcome to episode 232! In this episode, Coach Todd shares why Hawaii has become his favourite destination for triathlon training camps. Welcome to eipsode 231.
A former athlete reached out last week and shared a story I didn't know I was part of — a story about Ironman Canada, a moment at a gas station in Penticton, and a single sentence that ended up shaping the way he approaches challenge, work, and life.
In this episode, I read his message, walk through the race that pushed him to the edge, and explore how "just don't stop" became more than a race‑day mantra. It became a lens for resilience, identity, and doing hard things even when you don't feel ready.
This isn't a story about performance. It's a story about the quiet power of encouragement, the long tail of coaching, and the moments that change us without us realizing it.
If you've ever been in the middle of something hard — in sport or in life — this one will land deeply.
Enjoy and thanks for listening. :)

Most athletes don't arrive at race day feeling perfectly prepared — even though it often looks that way from the outside. In this episode, Coach Todd talks about why "not feeling ready" is far more normal than people admit, and how you can still show up with confidence even when training hasn't gone to plan.
Whether you're racing Victoria 70.3, Hawaii 70.3, or anything else on your calendar, this conversation will help you release the pressure, race the body you have today, and find meaning in the experience rather than perfection in the performance.
You'll learn how to simplify your goals, manage race‑week nerves, make smart decisions on course, and redefine what success looks like when life has made training messy. If you've ever stood on a start line wondering if you're "ready enough," this episode is your reminder that you can still show up — and still have a great day.
Happy Training! Coach Todd
Join me on The No Limits Map to Triathlon podcast as I share the story of a unique Christmas gift I gave myself — an adventure racing the Desert Gravel 50-miler in Fruita, Colorado. This episode takes you through the road trip with my rooftop tent, the awe-inspiring Colorado National Monument, the chaotic and thrilling race day, and the soulful moments of recovery and reflection afterward. It's a story about embracing challenges, savoring experiences over possessions, and finding gratitude in every mile. Whether you're a gravel racer, an adventure seeker, or simply someone who loves a good story, this episode offers inspiration and a reminder to live fully and adventurously.
Enjoy,

In this episode, Coach Todd dives into one of the most brilliantly simple — and brutally demanding — formats in endurance sport: the Backyard Ultra. With the BC Backyard Ultra kicking off this Friday in Sicamous, Todd shares what makes this event so unique, why athletes are drawn to it, and how the format turns running into a pure mental game.
You'll hear insights from his Saturday Zoom bike class conversation with Richard, who breaks down the rules, the whistle system, the strategy, and the strange appeal of running the same 6.7 km loop every hour… until only one person is left standing.
Todd also highlights the crew heading to the start line — Richard, Scott, Johan, and Kevin — and explores what motivates athletes to test themselves in a race with no finish line, no pacing plan, and no guarantees beyond the next loop.
If you love endurance sport, mental toughness, or stories about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, this episode will pull you right in. It's about curiosity, grit, community, and the magic of standing up — again and again — for "one more loop."
Happy Training!
Coach Todd
In this episode, coach Todd shares nine practical, experience-based checks you can do yourself or with the help of a bike shop or mobile mechanic: inspecting tires (and avoiding squared-off trainer wear), tightening and torquing bolts, testing brakes, dialing in shifting, checking wheel trueness and hubs, cleaning and lubricating the drivetrain, restocking your repair kit (including the easy-to-forget CO2 adapter), and making sure lights, visibility gear, and your helmet are ready to go. He also covers early-season riding habits, group ride etiquette, and simple skills like practicing emergency stops and wheel changes so you can ride confidently in wind, descents, and traffic.
Whether you're a triathlete or a weekend rider, this checklist-driven episode helps you prevent avoidable mechanical failures, reduce crash risk, and kick off spring riding with confidence and enjoyment.

Episode 226 of the No Limits Map to Triathlon podcast, hosted by coach and longtime triathlete Todd Malcolm, breaks down one of the most jaw-dropping pro racing stretches in recent memory: Christian Blumenfeld taking on three major races in roughly a month, across three countries, with almost no recovery time.
Todd walks through the timeline and the sheer difficulty of the schedule—starting with Ironman New Zealand (8:01:02 for 6th place despite an aero bar mechanical issue and ongoing stomach problems), then turning around just six days later to win the Geelong 70.3 with an exceptional run split (~1:06), and finally heading to the U.S. to race Oceanside 70.3. At Oceanside, Todd unpacks the tactics and drama: a strong bike by Sam Long and Jonas Schomburg created a ~two-minute gap into T2, but Blumenfeld's sustained chase and blistering ~1:07 half marathon led to a late pass with about 2.5 km to go—highlighting both the brilliance and brutality of elite racing.
Beyond the race recaps, the episode is a reality check for age-group athletes. Todd explains what makes campaigns like this possible at the pro level—full support teams, recovery as a full-time job, long-term conditioning, and elite genetics—while cautioning everyday athletes against copying pro calendars without pro resources. The key takeaway: don't imitate the volume; emulate the mindset. Todd encourages listeners to adopt the pros' consistency, patience, composure, and precise execution, while building a training and racing approach that fits real life, protects recovery, and keeps the sport enjoyable for the long haul.
The episode also touches on how watching pro racing can be both educational and motivational for training, and Todd shares his own upcoming focus, including the Hawaii 70.3 and events like Ironman Texas (April 18) to watch.
As spring tries to arrive in Calgary (with surprise snow still in the mix), Todd Malcolm checks in on where motivation and energy are really at heading into the new season—and how to keep training consistent when life, weather, and a recent minor illness have knocked things a bit off track.
In Episode 225, Todd shares the practical trade-offs he's navigating (including the time cost of midweek ski days), plus what's coming up on the calendar: a first-ever gravel race in Fruita, a return to the Hawaii training camp and Hawaii 70.3 in Kona, and another trip to Challenge Roth—with Nice 70.3 Worlds also on the horizon. He explains why travel and the experience around races can sometimes be an even bigger motivator than the racing itself, and how he uses that excitement to stay engaged when the spark feels low.
You'll also hear simple, actionable strategies for getting moving on low-motivation days—like the "15-minute rule"—and smart seasonal adjustments for northern-climate training, from indoor bike work to delaying open-water plans until local lakes thaw in June.
The episode closes with a reminder to stay flexible, stay grateful, and keep stacking small wins as the season turns.

Episode 224 — Training When You're Sick: The Above‑the‑Neck Rule In this episode, Todd dives into one of the most universal triathlon challenges: what to do with your training when you get sick. After catching the same bug that moved through his family, he walks through exactly how he handled his own training week — the good decisions, the not‑so‑good ones, and the lessons that can help every athlete stay healthy and avoid digging a deeper hole.
You'll learn Todd's simple, practical framework for deciding whether to train or rest:
If you've ever wondered how to navigate training during a cold or flu, this episode gives you a clear, compassionate roadmap you can use anytime.

Episode 223 of No Limits Map to Triathlon (with coach Todd Malcolm) explores how even positive, well-built training routines can start to feel like "Groundhog Day"—repetitive, bland, and emotionally flat. Todd explains why routine is still essential for busy, recreational triathletes (it reduces decision fatigue and keeps training sustainable), but also how boredom can be a useful signal to intentionally seek small doses of novelty rather than ditching the structure altogether.
Drawing from his group coaching—including a weekly 2.5-hour Saturday Zoom bike class where athletes share "one exciting thing from the week"—Todd shows how simple social rituals can bring humanity, connection, and motivation back into consistent training. He also shares personal examples (like a refreshing change of scenery training in Arizona, and noticing subtle differences on the same ski loop each week) to highlight a practical strategy: deliberately look for moments of awe, then capture them with a quick photo, video, or note to build a personal "memory bank" you can revisit when motivation dips.
Recorded while Todd is recovering from illness, the episode also reinforces the importance of flexibility, rest, and reframing disruptions (sickness, travel, life events) as a normal part of long-term endurance training.

Bob Jordan – Chasing Kona
In this episode, Todd sits down with legendary triathlete Bob Jordan to explore a journey that spans decades, heartbreak, and triumph. Bob shares the deeply moving story of his daughter Emily, whose letter to Ironman helped secure his place at Kona in 1997 while she battled leukemia. Just five days after his qualification, Emily passed away — but her spirit carried Bob through the race and into a lifetime of endurance.
From that emotional debut in Kona to his NBC feature, podium finishes, and eventual victory at Ironman Maryland, Bob reflects on the lessons of perseverance, grief, and legacy. Now at 75 years old, he continues to chase finish lines, proving that endurance is not just about speed but about heart, resilience, and the people who inspire us to keep going.
This episode is a tribute to Emily's legacy and Bob's relentless pursuit of Kona — a reminder that sport can be a vessel for love, memory, and meaning far beyond the race itself.

This episode compares life to a triathlon and reveals some valuable takeaways.
To be successful in life, or any event such as a triathlon, one must make a commitment to the goal, plan ahead, pack appropriately and be patient. Professionality and politeness are essential, as well as researching and planning prior to the event.
Patience is also key, as something that is achieved in the long run is usually much more meaningful and rewarding. Training in the same activities as the upcoming competition is encouraged in order to better prepare for success.
Enjoying the journey in between is also important and can be made more enjoyable by appreciating the companions on the road.
I know that I am constantly saying how Life is like a triathlon.
What do you think? Am I right?

I start off the year with a super interesting guy. Bob Gitsham.

The next day I attended the awards ceremony and watched the Ironman Race Day video where I saw Bob for the first time and this video inspired me to sign up another IM that day. Crazy but true.

Welcome to episode #68. In this episode I talk about my recent eBook. 101 Training Tips.
The idea for this short eBook came to me as athletes kept asking me what is my #1 tip for new athletes. I thought how cool it would be to ask athletes who have recently completed their race what their #1 tip is. This way you would be getting tips from people just like you, except that they are a few steps ahead.
The tips have been submitted from people all over the world, from all walks of life and in all shapes and sizes. You only need 1 good tip to get your butt across that start and finish line. Read them over now and later during your training and see which one resonates with you.
In this episode I cover 10 of the 101 tips.
Enjoy the tips & Happy Training!
