In this episode, Scott and Vince address the critical, and less-talked-about, issue of anxiety and mental health struggles. Stress is everywhere in our lives—it is not limited to the office, and sometimes, we bring the stresses of work home with us and they intensify the stresses at home. The pandemic added additional stresses in the form of isolation and depression and that has continued for some in their new remote work environments. Mental health struggles are something that affects a lot of people and this is complicated by the fact that only a few percent of people want to talk about their mental health. Through personal narratives and real workplace scenarios, our hosts share how to:

  1. Effectively communicate and help people who are struggling.
  2. Be a good listener and offer a helping hand.
  3. Engage people who want to be engaged
  4. Leverage therapy as a resource
  5. And most importantly, how to build and practice empathy.

If you know someone in your organization who is struggling with their mental health, your role is not to just inform HR. Instead, it is your responsibility to recognize, understand, and offer ways to help them.

What does it take to build and manage a successful TEAM? Scott and Vince sit down with University of San Diego Head Football Coach, Dale Lindsey, to discuss managing a successful team. While building a team in sports versus team building in business may have some clear differences, the principles that go into the development and management of a successful team are the same.

Scott, Vince, and Coach Lindsey talk about identifying the right people—those that align with the core values of the organization and ensuring that they have the right personality to align or adapt with the team philosophy. They discuss how leadership types play an important role in driving the team—in bringing the best out of the team. They talk about the importance of leaders listening to their leadership teams. Whether that's coaches with their coordinators or CEOs with their executives. If you're not listening to them, you may need to ask yourself "why did you hire them?"

Tune in this week for this great conversation with special guest, USD Head Football Coach, Dale Lindsey.

It seems more and more likely that those arrangements we made to deal with the pandemic and ensure that business could continue were far more than a temporary stop-gap to a unique situation. As many of us gather around tables with family and friends this week, we thought we'd spend a little time revisiting and digging deeper on one of Scott's favorite subjects—emotional intelligence. Simply, when business leaders adopt a practice of leading with emotional intelligence, the ROI is clear. Your team responds better, works harder, and is more vested in the success of the business. It helps build trust between you and your people; it makes them feel valued and when your team feels valued, they feel a part of the organization and not just another cog in the wheel.

In episode 17, Scott and Vince talk about executive presence. Far from a one-size-fits-all approach, executive presence is as much about humility and #vulnerability as it is about commanding the room. Looking at it from a modern perspective, it is about adapting to the situation and knowing what that moment calls for in the moment. Gone are the days of simply being a hardliner, executive presence in 2021 is a much more complicated business leadership skill.
