Bite size wisdom from today's teachers, psychologists, doctors, authors, and parents that can help to transform our parental experience from overwhelm and frustration to growth and success. Not only for our children but for ourselves. If parenting had a guidebook, this would be it.
Today’s episode goes behind the scenes with my roundtable cohost, Ashley Blackington, host of the And/Both podcast. Even though we live on opposite sides of the country and have never met in person, Ashley and I can dive into honest conversations and share truths that aren’t often talked about. We chat about our own podcasts, motherhood, where we’re heading next, and what’s fueling these episodes. We believe that community, whether virtual or in-person, truly matters, and we hope to share that community with you, the listener, as well.

Six years ago, I started recording this podcast in a cramped unused shower with my laptop propped on pillows in front of me—and I never imagined back then that PG-ish would still be here today. Despite the roller coaster ride of the last six years, I’m still here because of the real-life human connections the podcast has brought to my life, and the certainty that learning and growing will always matter.
Today I talk about why I started PG-ish and what I’ve learned over the last six years of the podcast, as well as how I’ve evolved over the last ten years of major life changes. Learning and growing alongside you and your kiddos has been such a joy and journey, and I look forward to continuing the ride with you!

We all know that with the rise of technology, our kids are growing up in a vastly different world than we did. Regardless of your house rules on phones and screen time, it’s likely that every kid will be exposed to social media in some way, which has a worrisome amount of power over their view of themselves and the world.
Dino Ambrosi, founder of Project Reboot, is on a mission to help the next generation build a better relationship with technology, in order to reclaim time and regain focus. He explains exactly how much of our precious lives are being traded away for screen time. While it’s not necessarily realistic to ban screens altogether (for ourselves or our kids), it is crucial that we teach our kids how to use technology with intention, because how we spend our time shapes who we become.

Giving ourselves permission to try something new is more about getting to know ourselves—our passions, our dreams, our strengths—rather than taking a path we’ve been taught we should take. As I watch my girls grow and navigate the school system, it strikes me that today’s education is lacking in actually helping our kids grow into healthy adulthood. But this isn’t a new topic.

We process information every day from other people’s body language, receiving meaning and messages simply from someone’s physical stance. But what does our own body language communicate to us?
Social psychologist Amy Cuddy believes that by simply changing your body language, you can change your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to transform your life for the better. As much as we want our kids to listen to our words, the truth is that most of what they are learning is by imitating what we do and how we live. And while our circumstances are important, we actually have so much power over our experiences by choosing our responses, which is also something our kids will pick up on.
Today’s episode features author and neuroscientist Dr. Joe Dispenza, who discusses emotional intelligence, boundaries, why love and kindness matter, and how to rewire your brain. And when we focus on those things, our kids will learn how to focus on them as well.

So much focus in our world today is spent on success, career goals, and independence. It’s no wonder we’re riddled with stress and anxiety! But even if we can’t change our actual circumstances, what if we were to simply shift our mindset to make our thoughts work in our favor?
Dr. Alia Crum is an associate professor of psychology at Stanford, director of the Stanford Mind and Body Lab, and an expert on mindsets and beliefs. Today she shares how we can think about stress in ways that bring out our best, rather than diminish our health and performance.

Today’s episode features Alain de Botton, who is a modern philosopher of love, travel, architecture, and literature, as well as a visionary for a new way of education. He’ll encourage you to acknowledge your own story, where you are in it, and to understand your past to move through it to learn and grow—which is ultimately to take better care of yourself, so you can take better care of your loved ones.

When you become a parent, it’s easy to hold yourself back. You take on a huge responsibility, and you make less risky decisions since you have more than yourself to take care of. And while stewarding your family well is important, it’s also important to continue to chase your own dreams.
Jonathan Fields is an author, producer, and business innovator who is on a quest to discover what makes people come fully alive. Today’s talk reminds us how crucial it is to move past fears of failure, or even simply sitting stagnant in life, in order to find fullness and fulfillment—not just for ourselves, but for our kids, who are learning how to live by watching our every move.

Let’s talk about your brain. It processes 70,000 thoughts every day using 100 billion neurons. All of this forms the basis for every memory, thought, and feeling—in other words, your entire life experience. But did you know that most of these thoughts are both negative and repetitive? No wonder we sometimes feel stuck.
The good news is that you have the power to rewire and adapt your brain to have a new outlook. Jenny Allen, author, Christian teacher, and founder of IF:Gathering, explains the three lies we easily believe and how to reclaim the power to change your life.

Today’s episode is a throwback to episode 96, because the topic is so important that it deserves to be addressed again. We all know the feeling of not getting enough sleep—we wake up groggy, frustrated, and less patient with our kids and with life. But lack of sleep takes much more toll on our bodies and minds than we might realize.
Sleep diplomat and professor Matt Walker explains that sleep is non-negotiable, because the less sleep we get, the shorter our lives are likely to be. When we start practicing better sleep habits, our brains remember more, our bodies fight disease better, and our lives can be not only better but longer—and that’s something our kids will thank us for.

We all have limitations and blind spots, which makes it easy to get wrapped up in our own heads, leaving us feeling stuck and alone. As adults, we need people to both call us out on our craziness and be our biggest fan and cheerleader—and our teenagers are no different. They need to be seen, understood, and accepted.

Why is it so hard to make friends as adults? Maybe it’s because we’re not always in situations where we automatically meet people in the same life stage as us. But also, maybe it’s because we close ourselves off, quick to judge others and afraid of being judged ourselves, and unwilling to take a chance. Building community takes time, not to mention vulnerability.
Today, motivational speaker Lisa Nichols reminds us that kindness matters, and being receptive to new friendships could actually change your view of yourself and of the world. You just have to be open to it.

This week marks the three-year anniversary of PG-ish! As I reflect on this journey, I remember all the time spent to scheme, dream, curate, pivot, launch, fail, and keep going. I started this podcast after huge changes in my family life, and I knew I needed to challenge myself to find (and share) resources to grow myself as a person and a mama. I believe reflection is important to remember how far we’ve come, and how much more is still to come—and it’s the little victories that keep us going and need to be celebrated. So today I’m here to share that taking risks is worth it, celebrating small wins is important, and pursuing life and love whole-heartedly is what fills us.

Do you ever lose sight of the end game? Sometimes as parents, we focus on the short game—grades, extracurricular activities, and how to fix things immediately for our kids. But does that actually serve them well as they grow into adulthood?

They actually need adaptability, mental agility, curiosity, collaboration, tolerance for failure, resilience and optimism. And how do they learn those skills? Our instinct as parents can be to hold our kids so tightly in order to protect and guide them into the life we want for them. Sadly, such a tight rein sometimes squashes their unique traits—pieces of them that should be celebrated and allowed space to learn and grow in their own way.
In a society that likes to point out weaknesses and conform us to fit a specific mold, Marcus Buckingham wants to turn this thinking upside down by helping people define strengths, innate tendencies, and personal loves. In this clip, he shares the extremes of his own experiences, from his ex-wife and son’s involvement in a college admissions scandal, to his own childhood filled with space to become his own person.

Why is it so hard to create good habits? We think that if we can find enough motivation and discipline, we should be able to accomplish our goals. The problem? We think we have to go big or go home—and so we set ourselves up for failure.

We have the power to reprogram our brains one small positive step at a time—whether it’s doing daily push ups, or finding our calm in the midst of difficult parenting.

As parents, we rely on our kids’ schools every day to help them thrive. But the truth is that it starts with the culture we create at home. We have the opportunity to provide an environment of energy, action, momentum, hope and possibility. When kids know they have an adult in their corner who believes in them, they will do better.
Today Simon T. Bailey shares how we can be the catalyst to help our kids view their education as something special, to create a vision of possibility that is often desperately lacking in our school systems. Today I’m sharing something that’s heavy on my heart this week—an interaction I had with a child (who isn’t mine) that broke my heart and reminded me of my mission to support and encourage other parents on this journey. We all know there’s no guidebook for parenting. So when the tough moments pop up, we can easily feel lost.
What I keep realizing is that at the end of the day, it all comes down to connection. Humans need other humans, and our kids need us to come down to their level and truly connect by spending time together. Don’t we all just want to be seen and loved where we are? Finding time to first fill our own cup so that we can pour into our kids is a daily struggle—but it’s a cause worth fighting for. No matter how many imperfect tries it takes, just keep showing up.

If you’ve been listening for a while, you may know that my motto as a parent is to be worthy of emulating. You’re a mirror, and your kiddo is going to reflect what you put out, good or bad. We don’t need perfection—simply conscious effort. As this week marks both my birthday and Mother’s Day, I’ve been thinking about what those celebrations really mean, and I decided I should share another piece of my own journey as a mom and how I continue to learn to become the person I want my own daughters to be.

As a parent, you have so much to do and think about—but do you ever stop to wonder if you’re really filling your time with what’s important? You may actually be robbing yourself of the gift of chasing goals, dreams, and hobbies, because you say you don’t have time. As author Oliver Burkeman explains, time is limited. The average person has about 4,000 weeks to live—and while it’s easy to get distracted with all the things and long to-do lists, it will be more worthwhile to live wholeheartedly (and maybe even allow yourself to rest along the way!). Now is the time to decide what matters most and take action, so that you can show up as a better parent and show your kids how to live fully as well.

Reflecting shouldn’t just happen at certain milestones, like a new year or a birthday. Instead, it should happen frequently, to keep checking you’re headed in the right direction and in alignment with who you want to be. Jen Sincero is a best-selling author, speaker, and self-proclaimed “motivational cattle prod.” Today’s clip will inspire you, grant you permission to rewrite your habits, and give you the tools to keep dreaming, chase after your goals, and be the badass you’re created to be.

Parenting often feels like we’re carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. We focus more on the things we think we have to control, rather than the things that bring us joy.
Today is a continuation of last week’s episode about coaching our kids instead of controlling them. Dr. Bill Stixrud is a neuropsychologist whose take on adolescent brain development could have a significant shift on how you show up and help to support your child. He discusses how the sense of autonomy—not full control, but some amount of knowing that what you do matters—can actually raise the feelings of motivation, and create resilience and hope in both us and our kids.

For parents, there are always anxieties looming on the horizon, constant concerns about our kids’ futures—and we feel the pressure of needing to fix all of it. But what would happen if we took a different approach? What if instead of trying to control everything, we gave our kids autonomy and simply walked calmly beside them? The ideas that Ned Johnson presents today could be transformative in helping us truly nurture and enjoy our kids, and giving them the tools they need to grow into a confident adult.

As parents, we get it wrong a lot of the time. But the truth is that our kids feel perfect love simply when we show up and spend time with them, not when we know all the right answers. Being able to honestly reflect on our actions, as well as being vulnerable with our kiddos when we need to repair and apologize, are critical to creating a safe haven to raise kids who can navigate their own difficulties and range of emotions.
Today Dr. Traci Baxley, the creator of Social Justice Parenting, shares her own imperfect parenting moments, how to tackle the inner mean mom who likes to guilt trip, and how to show up with radical love—especially around diversity and inclusion.

Your internal compass—which is affected by your beliefs, thoughts, values, habits, and daily narratives—has a huge impact on your health and ability to adapt to the not-so-sweet moments of life. Ultimately, your internal state will color your external world. But life is messy, and it’s okay to feel weak, uncertain, or scared.
Today’s talk with Susan David is a powerful one. She explains why it’s important to recognize and come to terms with our whole range of emotions, because only then can we truly embrace the beauty of life as well.

Sometimes it seems like as parents we work so hard to find the best way to parent our kiddos, only to miss the mark. Parenting strategies can be helpful, but if we’re not paying attention to the big picture of building real connection, we lose sight of what matters.
Dr. Gordon Neufeld is a developmental psychologist and author, whose ideas are based on the attachment theory of parenting. The way he dissects his thoughts today is almost poetic, as he explains why relationship and connection matter more than anything else we could possibly try to do.

It’s funny how we as parents always think it’s our job to teach our kids, when in reality we are learning about life right alongside them. Like it or not, our kids will reflect what they see in us, and our reactions and connections with them will shape them far more than our words and explanations.
Dr. Shefali is an acclaimed author, speaker, psychologist, and an expert in family dynamics and personal development. Today she’ll challenge your parenting intentions and encourage you to look at yourself first, before judging the child in front of you.

Sometimes it seems like our kids have it all figured out. They use their full potential to explore, giggle, run, dance, and truly live—in other words, they PLAY. Why is it that as adults, we so quickly schedule over the things that actually bring us joy in everyday life?
The good news is that we didn’t lose the capacity to play as we grew older—we’ve simply made other things more important. Stuart Brown, from the National Institute For Play, explains how creating space for play can help us destress, create resiliency and connection, and bring innovation into our lives. How will you make space for play today?

Today is an extra special episode, because it stars my own two kiddos! We love to read together before bedtime, and recently we’ve read some good throwback books from when they were smaller. It dawned on me that even though the simplest picture books might be written for our little ones, sometimes they contain so much wisdom for adulting as well. Join me as my girls read “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” which tells a story of creativity and the power we have to change the direction of our life.

You can’t give that which you don’t have. If you don’t have self-compassion, kindness, grace, and love for yourself, you can’t give it away. Living with integrity means speaking up and speaking the truth. It involves knowing your values and standing firm in them, and perhaps setting new boundaries and not being afraid of what others think. But it can be scary.

Last week we heard from happiness expert Shawn Achor about how the lens we choose to view the world through can change not only our well-being, but those around us as well. In short, it’s the power of a positive mindset.
Today we continue the mindset talk with Shawn to help us find freedom in our thoughts and habits, and to train our brains to spot patterns of possibility—resulting in more opportunities and hope in our lives. This requires action, of course, so he includes four building blocks we can put into practice today to create change.

Why are we so hard on ourselves when we make a mistake, yell at our kids, or compare ourselves to someone who seems to have a shiny, perfect life? We say we should treat others the way we want to be treated, but so often we forget to treat ourselves with kindness too.
Kristin Neff, an associate professor of educational psychology, is on a mission to teach others practical self-compassion skills to use in everyday life. In today’s talk, she identifies three components of self-compassion: kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. It’s not always easy—self-compassion takes fierce awareness and boundaries, and true vulnerability with each other—but it’s worth the effort.

Caroline Casey knows what it’s like to live a life pretending to be something you’re not—in her case, she hid the fact that she was legally blind to climb the corporate ladder. But once she realized she could ask for help and still believe in herself, she found she was capable of great things, including reaching goals no one thought were possible for her.
Too often we believe the negative, inaccurate labels given to us by others, or we only see our weaknesses, leading us to doubt our true strengths. We all have limitations, of course, but fear and doubt can create limitations that don’t need to be there. Caroline’s incredible journey reminds us that the power of belief in oneself can transform any life story.

As we near the end of the year, let’s focus on a few important topics: having more compassion for yourself, being inspired, facing your perceived limitations, and leading a more fulfilled life. Great things would happen!

Thanksgiving is hands down my favorite holiday, due to my many childhood memories of huge family get-togethers that lasted all weekend. Sadly, as a single parent, I’ll be without my girls this year—making the holiday a lonely prospect. But I know I’m not the only one out there trying to figure out what the holidays look like as a solo parent. Today I share my thoughts on what it really means to be a “single mother,” as well as some ideas on how we can reimagine creating special memories with our kiddos.

As the parent, you set the tone in your home. You not only lead by example, but the energy you put out is what you’ll get in return. But it’s easier said than done. I know how it feels to go through the motions just to try to get to the end of the day to reclaim a few moments of independence—but aren’t we missing out if that’s all we do?
Bert Jacobs, one of the brothers behind the Life Is Good t-shirt movement, explains how simple rituals at home can help us unlock imagination, change our focus, and build a boundless community around courage and compassion.

As the world heats up with opinions on everything, I find myself trying to sift through the data and voices on each side. Despite having the same exact agenda—to live a healthy life doing the things we love with the people we love—somehow divisiveness is permeating every aspect of society. We were all in it together 12 months ago, and yet today we find ourselves ready to attack anyone who might have a different perspective.
Today’s clip with Julia Galef reminds us that our worldview is a living document, meant to be revised. If we can simply allow ourselves to be curious, open to other ideas, and constantly pursuing the truth, we just might find pride in allowing our own perspective to change.

With the quick rise of technology over the last few decades, humans are facing a new and unfamiliar challenge to our well-being. And this is especially true for millennials, who have been defined as impatient, entitled, lacking in social skills and stress management tools, and having few deep relationships. While today’s talk with Simon Sinek is targeted at millennials, it’s also a reality check for parents, for leaders, and for anyone who feels unfulfilled, unsettled, and restless in their pursuit of a meaningful life.

So much of our time is spent thinking and worrying about what lies ahead of us—and we end up missing the present moment. Today we continue the topic of meditation and mindfulness with Jon Kabat-Zinn, a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher. He takes us deeper into mindfulness with the idea that ‘wherever you go, there you are.’ He explains that when you learn how to cultivate your internal environment, you can truly be present and not miss out on your own life, including the small moments with your kiddos that you’ll never get back.

We live in an age that bombards us with constant distractions, and we place very little priority on taking care of our brains by being mindful and present in the moment. But if we took just 10 minutes a day to actually be still, we could change our whole perspective.
Andy Puddicombe, a meditation and mindfulness expert, explains that we spend much of our waking life lost in thought where it’s easy to fall down rabbit holes of overwhelm, anxiety, and unhappiness. When we take time to pause, we equip ourselves with tools to handle stress and emotions...and better yet, we help our kids understand what it means to appreciate life and become more resilient to whatever comes their way.

We’ve all heard that kids are sponges. They soak up everything they see and hear—about the world, the people around them, and their own capabilities and worth—and accept it as truth. This is why the words you choose as a parent are so important, and how the narratives you speak into existence will build your child’s self-esteem and world perspective.
Rachel Davis is the founder of the music educational platform La La Tigers, an NLP practitioner, songwriter, and mother of two. She explains how the belief systems formed in early childhood can be influenced through love, connection, and music, to increase your child’s self-worth, confidence, and self-belief.

This week is special to me, as it marks the two-year anniversary of PG-ish. As I reflect on this journey, I’m amazed at the support I’ve had that has kept me going. Just like parenting, I’ve had to grow through this one step at a time—and I choose to keep showing up, to learn more, to be a better parent, to help others along the way.
Each of us makes choices every day about how we respond to what comes our way. The habits we choose, day in and day out, the words we speak, how we show kindness and compassion, and ultimately how we decide to live our lives has a huge impact on our kiddos and how they approach the world, their relationships, and their ambition.
Today’s throwback clip (Episode 87) with Rick Rigsby reminds us that what matters is not our degrees, our prestige, or our accomplishments, but instead it’s how we show up, each and every day.

Since we’ve been talking about the science of the brain, today’s episode is a throwback from episode 62 with Dr. Dan Siegel. He explains the science behind when and why we lose control of our emotions. Fortunately, Dr. Siegel not only talks about knowing what it looks like to flip your lid, but also how to recover. Knowing what triggers you, and understanding how you can stay present with compassion and empathy, helps to build a strong foundational relationship with your child. When they can rely on you to stay calm, you encourage them to flex their own compassion muscle.

As we struggle to jump back into the busy routine of going back to school, I’m reminded that humans are made to adapt. We have the ability to learn new routines and shift our actions to fit our circumstances.
Today’s clip is all about why positive changes are possible, and it’s one that you won’t want to miss. Child psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Bruce Perry talks with Oprah Winfrey about the impact of childhood trauma on our physical biology and who we become because of it, as well as how we as parents and educators can approach our kids with better questions, routines, and connections. They explain that shifting how we relate to each other can actually help us heal and grow in resilience throughout all that life throws our way.

Why is it that as we grow older, we grow so much more serious? Probably because we start to carry the weight of the world as we age. But did you know that changing your physiology is the easiest and cheapest way to shift your mind and body? In other words, making the choice to smile (even when you don’t feel like it) can actually change your entire outlook. Ron Gutman, an educator, writer, investor, and entrepreneur, reveals some surprising results of studying smiling, and why you should take a cue from your kiddo on this one.

Anyone else tired of all the small talk? I’m ready to cut to the chase and get to know people, to talk about real life, and to ask about the things that really matter. Humanity is aching for deeper meaningful relationships, but many of us lack the tools to get there. And as parents, we’re painting the picture of what relationships look like for our kids. Why don’t we like to face the messiness of our lives? Every day, we hold contradictions in our hands between the loveliness and the ugliness of it all, and we always want to find formulas and reasons for what happens—but the truth is that sometimes we never know the answers. Kate Bowler, an associate professor at Duke Divinity School, who started her journey through cancer at age 35 when she had a one-year-old son, speaks honestly when it comes to fears and suffering, dreams and expectations. She reminds us that there is beauty to be found in the darkness, if we are brave enough to embrace it. And when we find comfort through authentic community, we show our kids the value of relationships, genuine emotions, and love.

In a culture where we only like to show the glamour shots full of shiny happy people, it’s time to have the uncomfortable conversation and share the hard truth: Life Is Messy.
Sadly, many things are left out when we discuss marriage, leaving us with an unrealistic view skewed by movies and social media. Relationship researcher, professor, and author Dr. Carol Bruess hilariously discusses that all relationships are messy (and that’s okay), and that it’s the little things that can elevate your relationship—and even help you live longer.

Parenthood doesn’t come with a guidebook. We live in confusing times, and we are left to define parenting on our own terms. Sometimes, this is terrifying (since we don’t want to mess up our kids!). But it can also be amazingly freeing. Today’s episode features New York Times writer Jennifer Senior, who explains that there may be a better goal in parenting than the elusive dream of wanting our kids to be happy.

We don’t always have realistic expectations of our kids. They aren’t born understanding how to act or how things work - it’s our job to teach them. In today’s Throwback Thursday episode, Shelly Lefkoe lays down the law on having realistic expectations for our kids, how to help them respond to daily challenges, and how we can teach our kids in a way that gives them the confidence to try and succeed.

I know that as a parent right now, you’re working double time as the teacher, caregiver, home taskmaster, and chef. But our teachers are also carrying a load that seems all too unbearable. And some of them are going above and beyond to make real connections with our kids during a difficult time. Teachers have the unique ability to be heroes, if they choose to be. Today’s clip features teacher Rita Pierson, who exudes the energy, passion, and creativity needed by teachers (and parents!) to ensure every student feels not only seen, but liked.

It’s a big week! I’m celebrating my 100th episode, and I’m hosting The Pandemic Parenting Survival Summit this weekend! It’s amazing to think back to when those were both just small ideas, and now to see them happening. Too often we allow the outside world to dictate what we think is real or possible; when actually we have much more power to control our circumstances simply by how we allow ourselves to process emotions. Your internal compass - your beliefs, values, thoughts, habits, and daily narratives - has a huge effect on your health, well-being, and ability to adapt to the not-so-sweet moments in life. Today Susan David discusses how ultimately, your internal state will color your external world, for good or bad.

Does it feel like Groundhog Day? Every day seems the same, and we start to wonder if our daily efforts are pointless. But making real change in the type of person we want to be, and especially the type of people we want our kids to be, takes time and daily doses of intentionality. In today’s clip, James Clear explains how every action that you take is actually a vote for the type of person that you want to become. One vote, or action, at a time creates the path forward for who we are becoming.

With all of the plot twists of 2020, how many of you are feeling numb, hollow, and desperate for change? How many of you are holding up a facade, while you’re actually ready to fall apart? And all the while, we think that the answer is to keep each piece in place as we check off the boxes on our busy to-do lists. But what if our success could actually increase if we just stop for a moment...to play. Listen as Dr. Stuart Brown, founder of The National Institute of Play, explains why incorporating play every day is one of the most important parts of being human.

We’re so used to thinking that in order to be a better parent, we need to work harder, to be everything, to do it all and do it well - probably while holding our fifth cup of coffee for the day. Today is Throwback Thursday (see episode 7) in honor of one of my favorite speakers, Sir Ken Robinson. Are you raising a rebel? Rather, do you see the value in raising a rebel? Most parents do everything possible to avoid encouraging rebellious habits. But what if being a certain kind of rebel actually makes you more resilient, resourceful, and creative? Let’s talk about empathy.
I feel like I used to be more empathetic, before life got so busy and complicated. And today’s children, growing up in the age of selfies and immediate gratification, are showing a rapid decrease in levels of empathy.
But why is empathy so important for our future, and how do we nurture it in our kids? Listen to today’s clip with educational psychologist Michele Borba to better understand empathy and the three best ideas to cultivate it in ourselves and in our homes.

Do you allow yourself to pursue your passions? Do you leave room in your life for creativity? Sadly, as adults, the answer is often no. We can learn a lot from watching our kiddos, as they have no agenda, no habits to prevent them from daring to dream, and no limits to their imagination. Today’s clip features Ethan Hawke as he shares about how we need to be courageous enough to tap into our passions and creativity.

Do you believe you can change the world? Okay, it seems daunting (and sometimes unrealistic - especially when you’re barely leaving the house!). But what if we all believed we could change things one small task at a time? As you begin a new school year with different challenges and routines, the benefit is that YOU have the opportunity to create new systems that work for your family. Today’s episode features retired Navy Admiral William McRaven, who outlines 10 realistic ways you can change the world - and it starts by changing the dynamics and values within your home.

If you feel like you’ve been on the verge of mental and physical fatigue and don’t know how you’ll manage to see the new year, today’s talk is for you - because your quality of life matters. In order to show up as the parent you want to be, you need to take care of yourself and allow yourself to dream about the possibilities that life holds. It has been a CRAZY couple of weeks as schools are changing their stance on what the fall will look like for students. As a parent, I've been overwhelmed trying to make the best decision for my daughters and their education - even so far as to worry how this will affect their options for a college education! How could any parent know what the landscape of education will look like in one month, or three months, or one year, much less ten years from now when my daughter may be college-bound? Today’s episode, featuring Sir Ken Robinson, addresses the idea that the future is unpredictable, and perhaps it’s time for a drastic change in what we value about our children’s education.

Full transparency… My home is not always filled with “Insta-perfect” happy smiles. Three girls living together creates plenty of drama - and we haven’t even hit the teenage years! But I’m learning that as the parent, I set the example of how to regulate and respond to emotions in a helpful way. How we respond to our children’s feelings has the potential to propagate anxiety and depression, or kindness and compassion.
Today’s clip with Lael Stone nudges us to listen and care, reminding us that our parenting leaves imprints on our kids’ adult mental health. It’s about how we create a safe place for our children to feel, to process, and to learn.

We all make choices every day about how we respond to what comes our way. The habits we choose, day in and day out, the words we speak, how we show kindness and compassion, and ultimately how we decide to live our lives has a huge impact on our kiddos and how they approach the world, their relationships, and their ambition.
Today Rick Rigsby reminds us that what matters is not our degrees, our prestige, or our accomplishments, but instead it’s how we show up. And we have to keep on standing.

How many conversations have you had with your kids about being a problem solver when they hit an obstacle? We tell them if they want to see change, they should think about how they're showing up in the situation. Are they helping or hurting? Are they part of the problem or the solution? But we also need to take a look at our own response to obstacles to set the example of caring enough to make change happen.

This one is for you - the multitasking parent who is managing all the work tasks, home tasks, and kid tasks at once. Even when we most think we want quiet time, we’re so accustomed to the noise that we end up craving distractions. When we finally have a moment to ourselves, we scroll through social media or watch Netflix. In today’s episode, Manoush Zomorodi talks about her research with various neuroscientists to dissect how multitasking is not actually helping you, and how technology might actually be preventing you from growing.

Today we’re talking about bravery. Have you ever noticed that we as parents tend to be so protective of our girls as they grow, but we encourage our boys to take risks and be courageous? I myself am a recovering perfectionist, always wanting to do things just right. As a mom of girls, I relate to the idea of wanting to help my daughters be the best they can be, rather than encouraging them to try and fail, and try again. Reshma Saujani shares her own experience learning to be brave as an adult, and how important it is that we begin to teach our girls at a young age to be brave, not perfect.

Being intentional with our time, with the end goal of creating connection and memories with our children, is important in the early years. It doesn’t have to be a huge investment or a trip around the globe (although no one is doing that now anyway), to make an impact. Join Erin and her daughter as they discuss why road trips are one of their favorite ways to fill their summers, create long lasting memories, and explore the world around them in a more intimate way.
Erin shares about her sources of stress, often centered around parenting, and how our children wish (secretly or openly) that us parents were less stressed and happier. She then shares a clip from a talk by Bruce Feiler about the “Agile Model.”
