Robert and Tom are at the helm this week and what a week it has been. The Super Bowl was all EV all the time, with a massive number of ads for EV's ran during the broadcast. Ford has shut down the F-150 "lightning" assembly line in the wake of some battery issues and Tesla is recalling 300,000 + vehicles for problems with FSD. Large scale solar projects are being piloted in California with the hope of someday covering the aqueduct in solar panels. All that and more on  this weeks show.

Joel, Robert and Tom are your hosts for Episode 260. The first episode of 2023 and it's a doozy (sp). A bit longer than usual as there is a lot going on in the world of Tesla and Elon. We discuss the final delivery numbers for 2022, spoiler alert, they are pretty good, but not great. There is a discussion about FSD...I know, I know it's enough already, but it's such a critical part of Tesla's future that we can't seem to help ourselves. We discuss the lack of female crash test dummies and the risk that poses to female drivers and passengers as a result, and a couple of companies that are working to rectify that major safety shortcoming of the auto industry. We hope you enjoy the show and please leave us a review on whatever platform you listen to us on.

One of our favorite things to do is ask google questions. This episode we might have gone a bit overboard on that. There is a discussion about Toyota and the initiation of a group to rethink it's EV strategy yet again, the third time is the charm. The Hyundai battery factory in Georgia and the usual tangent festival you've come to know and love. Apologies for Joels audio which is at times not good and at other times just bad. While Robert could not join us for the show he was able to send in a pretty amazing SC report and a media pick that is sure to delight.

Tesla club la - Santa Clarita supercharger meetup and Plaid S

  • Marge - a member of the LA Tesla club and all around good person was one of the first 25 delivered at the event in Fremont
  • Was kind enough to bring it to see in person
  • It’s white - has full self driving - 21” wheels - carbon fiber trim -
  • Sitting in it is great - the display just works. So much better in landscape position. And I like how it’s built into the dash instead of floating like in the 3
  • The yoke was really low so you could really see the binnacle very well.
  • Fit and finish seems very good. Almost hand built I imagine since it was first 25.
  • The roof is super dark - seemed much darker than my model three was in 2017 - and even darker than the tint I have on mine now.
  • The door handle design was great and seemed much more traditional than the original s design - which I also liked a lot
  • The inside of the front hood is redesigned
  • Running software v10.2
  • There seemed to be a ton of controls and settings for the suspension, but since I have not been in an model s for a good long while I am not sure if that is been like that for a while.
  • I’ll add the photos an maybe they will go on Instagram
  • Seat were comfortable and the mover the lumbar adjuster to in front of the seat back and forward and back adjustment knobs
  • Franz autographed it under the hood
  • Pockets in the door will hold a water bottle sort of
  • The little rear screen was cool , it be great if it was bigger but that’s pretty nitpicky
  • Center console seems a few inches higher. Than in the previous S. Especially right under the dash and wear the phone goes. A really good high ergonomically
  • Had alcantara headliner-is this standard in S?
  • The graphics are very nice and the screen does seems noticeably higher def/res
  • Dashboard seems narrower than on the 3 which is maybe where the additional room in the rear comes from
  • Feels very roomy in both the front and back
  • It’s new but it’s a Tesla unmistakable design aesthetic
  • If you’ve been waiting. For a redesign.. wait no more.

Trickle down: What Plaid features do you expect to see in other Teslas or EVs ? Pick 3

  • Smaht Shift
    • Model S will auto-magically determine if you want to go into forward or reverse.
  • Yoke Steering wheel
    • Tesla’s yoke steering wheel has 7 dedicated capacitive touch buttons and 2 multi function wheel buttons.
  • Lithium ion 12v battery
    • Tesla has eliminated the lead acid battery in favor of a very small 12 v lithium ion battery that is designed to last the life of the car.
    • https://electrek.co/2021/02/02/tesla-model-s-x-get-rid-lead-acid-12v-battery-moves-li-ion/ v
  • Entertainment:
    • The Model S’s entertainment system uses graphics processing system that is on par with processors found in the newest console game controllers. The 17” center screen can pan towards the driver for better visibility. HVACin the rear can be controlled by a small rear touch screen along with being able to watch movies and play video games.
    • Video game level processing

Tesla Tells California DMV that FSD Is Not Capable of Autonomous Driving

Tesla’s 62 stall Santa Monica V3 Supercharger hits speed bump, LA housing crisis takes priority

https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-supercharger-v3-santa-monica-emergency-interim-zoning-ordinance/

  • Recall the project, the largest V3 Supercharger station in the world with 62-stalls, solar canopies, battery backup and customer restrooms was approved by the Planning Commission on March 3rd
  • The final approval by the City Council however took a u-turn for a cliff.
  • Why? Housing.
  • Santa Monica and Los Angeles is in the midst of a housing crisis with high rents and undersupply
  • The housing crunch occupied much of the Planning Commissioner’s debate, discussed 2-shows ago; commissioners wanted Tesla to build housing units on top of the super chargers.
  • Noelani Derickson of Tesla responded “Tesla is a car manufacturer, we’re not in the housing business.
  • The Supercharger project has been included in an Emergency Interim Zoning Ordinance for potential housing in Los Angeles.
  • The city is working to change rules governing housing project density & profitability leading to more construction.
  • In the end City Council actions will likely lead to the project’s demise, but what can you do?
  • There are almost 1,000 Tesla owners in Santa Monica, if they wrote to the Santa Monica City Council

Breaking News: ELON Opening up FSD BETA Program (on Twitter)Why do we not know how many people are in the beta? 10x is kinda meaningless without that data.

  1. Watched an interesting video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0pAOist3UY< showing an intersection and unprotected left turn when the opposing driver did not take the right of way and was an indicator of how the FSD reacts to that.
  2. Missed an entrance to a driveway and navigated to the next driveway
  3. Attempted to drive FSD into a self wash - Successful or not? Guesses from the boys!!
    1. Interesting edge case - can you guys think of any others like this?
    2. Does not slow down for the dips and bumps in the road - Would that be a warranty repair? Interesting thing to discuss.
  4. Delivery Truck double parked - How did the FSD do here?

Will Robert be getting FSD beta?

  • When Tesla expanded FSD beta from social media influencers (was in 2-phases, 20 then 100) to all Tesla Owner Club leadership in early November 2020, expected users would increase from 100 -> 1,000. I did not receive confirmation though I asked for it, chalked it up to disarray at Tesla. Turns out nearly half of club leaders have legacy cars without the necessary hardware.

  • European car sales are down this year:
    • 7% decline in January
    • 2,6% decline in February
    • 3,7% in March
  • Most of the decline can still be attributed to the after effects of the introduction of new fuel efficiency and emissions testing standard called WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Procedure) in September
  • As in five out of the last six months, crossovers and SUVs are the only category to improve their sales volume year-on-year, with a 3,2% increase leading to a 36,9% market share.
  • Big winner among manufacturers is once again Tesla Motors, both in absolute figures and in year-on-year growth as Tesla more than triples its volume on last year thanks to the start of deliveries of the Model 3.
