A little over four years ago, I took a group of adventurous podcast listeners to Jordan for the first time: to hike the Jordan Trail, sleep under the stars, wander the Wadi Rum desert, visit the ancient city of Petra, and float in the Dead Sea.
It was, unequivocally, the most surprising place I’ve ever visited. And if you know me at all, you know that’s really saying something.
Jordan is like nowhere I have ever been, and as I ramp up to go back in April 2023, I intentionally revisited this magical country through the two podcast episodes I created when I returned home from that original trip. As I transported myself back to 2018, immersing myself in nearly two hours of Jordanian adventure, culture, food, language, and people, not to mention many, many trip highlights and memories (and goats), and SO much laughter, I realized something…
There's no way I couldn't NOT share this Jordan experience with YOU all over again. It's too good, too dreamy, too funny, and simply too delightful on a cloudy winter day to keep only for myself.

We first met the Bensons, a family of five, in episode 67 when they were preparing to take a giant leap, sell their house, and travel around the world for a year. We caught up with them again halfway through their trip while they were in South America to see what that trip ended up looking like (episode 76). Today, we get to chat with them again, now that they have been back in the US for over a year. This is a hard conversation, and we ask the question, "How do you keep the travel spirit alive at home after a huge adventurous trip has passed?"
Returning "home" is often the hardest part of travel, and not letting go of the life changes, but instead figuring out how to apply them to your new "normal" is the confusing part. I have finally checked Jordan off my bucket list! I spent three weeks exploring beautiful Jordan in May 2018, attending an adventure travel conference and then taking a group of YOU with me hiking on the Jordan Trail to Petra. She is Palestinian Jordanian and here to share her insights on living in this beautiful country. We got to meet up in Jordan on my first day there after not seeing each other in 9 years. Some friendships just never change.
Ban Barkawi is a Jordanian multimedia journalist and radio presenter based in Amman, where she hosts a daily morning show at an English-speaking station. Together with the podcasting platform Sowt she produced Eib, a podcast in Arabic that addresses gender-based taboos. In 2013 she produced the award-winning TV documentary Refugees in Business about the livelihood of Syrian refugees in Jordan's Zaatari camp. Ban holds an MA in multimedia broadcast journalism and a BA in news-editorial journalism.

In December of 2017, we spent three weeks driving the length of the Carretera Austral. We first met Ford back in episode 81 when he came on the show to talk about his solo journey from the US down the Pan-American Highway. He was in Colombia at the time, and now, after 2.5 years on the road, he is back home. He joins us today to reflect on the journey and give tons of great advice for anyone considering driving the Pan-American Highway.
I actually met up with Ford in person last fall and we drove through Chilean Patagonia together (the Carretera Austral) for about five weeks. We will continue this conversation in the next episode to talk about that specific part of his journey as well.

Brendan Lee used to be an accountant in New Zealand, that is, until he decided to volunteer in Tanzania and not go home afterwards. He's been on the road for several years, traveling solo, collecting friends and experiences and writing about them on his blog. Casey Wong bought a motorcycle and shipped it to South America, where he proceeded to ride it from Colombia to Argentina, on his own. In Ecuador he ran into a friend of mine, which prompted an introduction to me and eventually a few beers in person as he passed through Bariloche, where I happened to be living in Argentina. With the notorious Patagonian winds, questionable roads, and oncoming winter, I worried about his safety as he continued south. A year later, we get to hear the complete story of Casey's motorcycle adventures through South America, including best resources for traveling motorcyclists, how to ship a bike to South America, logistics and advice for the road, and what Casey always, always kept in stock on his bike, no matter what sort of challenges he faced.

Ford pulled out of his driveway in Georgia in October 2015 to start driving his truck down the Pan-American Highway, all the way to the end of the world in Patagonia, Argentina. He is on a mission to break stereotypes between Latinos and Gringos (Americans), live & experience first-hand cultural experiences, find the best adventures, learn Spanish, and show that America is a continent and not a country. Two years ago, John Owed declared (on the podcast) his intent to break away from his office job to explore the world and realign his daily life with his personal priorities. I have been using adventure travel to challenge myself lately, and in this special episode we dive into my journey of recently attempting two via ferratas, even though I have a pretty significant fear of heights. Maddy is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is earning a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. A midwestern girl at heart, she was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. Maddy’s love of travel was cultivated at a young age when she took several trips abroad with her family. This prompted her to pursue several more abroad experiences, and ultimately led her to accept a teaching job in Tel Aviv, Israel after she graduates. Maddy is an avid listener of The Budget Minded Traveler Podcast, and is so excited to have this opportunity to share her passion for travel and seeing the world with others.
