My name is Shiro Bergbauer, DNP, CRNA. Becoming a mom was a huge shift and transition from me. I needed to find information on transitioning to becoming a working mom that was relevant to my career and I found that most information was targeting corporate moms who work traditional 9-5 hours. As I surveyed moms in medical careers, I realized the paucity of content addressing our needs. We take care of other people at We take care of other people at work and at home. We aren’t always equipped for the transition from clinician to working mom, and this isn’t how it should be.
This week we chat about the ways we can allow for and encourage evolution in our lives for more purpose and to grow into our highest selves.
I am letting go of the podcast for now, with this weeks episode as a season finale. I don't know if/when it might return. I'm still coaching and supporting incredible moms, and you can reach me at hello@anesthesiamomblog.com or on socials at instagram.com/stethoscopes.to.swaddles/ .
It has been an incredible journey through the pandemic, through our way to a new normal as mothers and in this community. It's been an honor to share what I can to help moms live their best possible lives. Thank you for all of the support through the years on this podcast.
My Linktree Cassidy has been editing through the series and you can find more about how she might be able to help you at CassidyMitchell.com.

In this episode of Stethoscopes to Swaddles, we will be continuing our conversation on investing in relationships. This is a continuation of last week's episode where we explored some of the ways we lose our bids for connection. We began the conversation on how we discover our emotional connection communication systems. Today we are going to dive into our emotional heritage, and how to examine it.
We're going to talk about our emotional philosophy based on the four different kinds of emotional philosophies. We’re also going to talk about the value of emotional attachment and talk about a little bit about emotional vulnerability and why it's important in relationships.

And Baby Makes Three
The Relationship Cure
In this episode, we are going to have a conversation about investing in relationships. We're going to learn Six things that actually make it difficult for us to bid. We will also talk about how to build better connections with the significant people in our lives. We will discuss how to build better connections in our friendships, our marriages, dating relationships, and our relationships with our children. We'll also talk about the concept of the emotional command systems and in addition to that, we'll define those seven systems.Last, but not least, we'll talk about how to evaluate our emotional command systems. So, this is basically the second building block of our strengthening relationships series. And this one is going to be how to start investing, how to start practicing awareness and to start investing.
Investment is a noun, and it is described as the act of putting money, effort, time etc. into something to make a profit or get an advantage; or the money, effort, time, etc. used to do this. If you think about investing in time, investing in ourselves, investing in relationships- we are basically putting effort into something to achieve a result. And that is the second definition, which is the act of putting money or effort into something to make a profit or achieve a result. And the goal here is to achieve a result. And so, when we think about the result that we want in relationships, it's to communicate better in order to have better connections, to engage with each other from a place of understanding each other and loving each other.
This series is based on John Gottman's work and a series of other books that I've been reading, but primarily John Gottman’s book, The Relationship Cure, a five-step guide to strengthening your marriage family and friendships.

This week we're chatting about how to change your belief patterns and I share tools that helped me and my clients build belief systems that help us thrive.
Creating separation between harmful thoughts and you:
“I'm thinking the thought that I’m not good enough at this thing and that I can’t do it”
Use the 4 questions of Byron Katie:
Is this thought true?
Can you absolutely know that it's true?
What are the results when you believe that thought?
Who would you be without the thought?
Visualization:
How do I want to be two years from now?
Write yourself a letter from the future you to the present you, explaining from their perspective: How you got to where you wanted to go, what you did, what you believed on purpose.
What does it feel like to be that person? What does your day look like? How you hold yourself? What are your habits? How do you react to obstacles in the way of maintaining those habits? What are your beliefs?
Plan and create the world around you. Try on the new thoughts like a new outfit. Practice the thoughts and beliefs, ask questions that will allow your prefrontal cortex to come up with answers and back up the belief and identity. At the same time hold compassion for future you and resist perfectionist expectations.
For example:
Why am I a good mom?
Why am I such a good friend?
What makes me really good at my job?
How do I show up for the person I'm becoming and am?
Comfort the resistance to a new path: “hey brain, I know you’re scared and uncomfortable, it’s going to be just fine, you will survive this discomfort”
What are you truly unwilling to feel?
What would that feeling really feel like and how long would it really last?
Shame:
Recognize it and understand it’s triggers.
Reality check that you’re human and it’s a normal human emotion that all of us feel sometimes.
Reality check the messages and expectations that are driving you to shame. Perfectionism leaves a wake of shame.
Reach out and connect, speak the shame with a friend who has earned the trust to hear it.
Engage with empathy and compassion for the circumstances that are driving the shame. Look at them with warmth. You are only human.

The Mental Load of Motherhood
The mental load is a term for the invisible labor involved in managing a household and family.
MOTHERS AS CAPTAIN
Cicciola and Luthar, 2016
Invisible Household Labor and Ramifications for Adjustment: Mothers as Captains of Households
In the study, they sought to capture mothers’ felt obligations as the “captain of the ship” that was their household, that is, the extent to which mothers felt that they, more so than their spouses, shouldered responsibility for the management of the home.
WHY IT HAPPENS
Descriptive and prescriptive stereotypes
MEASURES
Emotional intimacy
Physical intimacy
Satisfaction with partner
Parenting role overload
Overall life satisfaction and emptiness
HOW TO IDENTIFY OVERLOAD
Burnout and depletion
Resentment and dissatisfaction
Overwhelm
Feeling unseen
MANAGING THE LOAD
Heighten awareness among today’s mothers of the degree to which and areas in which they might unwittingly shoulder disproportionate household responsibilities as compared to men, along with the potential fallouts.
“Mothering mothers” (Luthar and Ciciolla 2016, p. 1820).
Society should consider the magnitude of responsibilities mothers take on at home and at work, and equally, the degree to which mothers have opportunities to prioritize and make time for authentic connections with others to replenish themselves.
HOW TO NAVIGATE THE MENTAL LOAD
Share concrete examples of your mental load—> write them down
Ask for help with the management, not just chores
Continuous communication
Delegate and outsource
Task lists/ Project management
Prioritize rest and self care
Deconstruct gender stereotypes with partner and kids

Trimester 1,2,3,4,5- Pregnancy and Beyond, You Can Survive
INTRODUCTION
Lauren Smith Brody: The Fifth Trimester
The Fifth Trimester is when the working mom is born. If the first three trimesters are pregnancy and the fourth is the newborn phase, the fifth is when mom heads back to work…often before she’s physically or emotionally ready to be there. And yet there she is, because that’s the reality for American women right now. (25% of new working moms are back on the job two weeks after birth. And only 56% of working moms even qualify for unpaid FMLA leave. The percentage who can afford to take all of that time off unpaid is even lower.)

After listening to this episode, you will learn how to recognize burnout, and learn how to complete the stress cycle. "Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and reduced professional efficacy. ‘- World Health Organization
Human Giver Syndrome- The contagious belief that you have a moral obligation to give every drop of your humanity in support of others, no matter the cost to you.

Eisenhower had an incredible ability to sustain his productivity not just for weeks or months, but for decades. His most famous productivity strategy is known as the Eisenhower Box (or Eisenhower Matrix) and it’s a simple decision-making tool that you can use right now.

Review of previous episode
“Wholeheartedness is like a North Star. You can never get there. But you know when you’re heading the right way.”- Brene Brown
Cultivating is about creating something positive. It’s moving you forward by putting your oars in the water to row your boat on the sea of life.
Letting go is about removing resistance. It’s detaching the anchors from your boat, so you make effective progress when you row.
Without creating the positive, you won’t move forward. And without releasing what weighs you down, your progress is limited, slow, and painful.
The term “guidepost” also signifies that wholeheartedness is a way of travel, not a destination.
Guidepost 6: Cultivating Creativity and Letting Go of Comparison
Creativity doesn't require talent- everyone is creative! Comparison impedes creativity
Watch a kid being creative- Zero pressure
ACTION STEPS:
What’s your favorite way to be creative?
Start creating and share your gifts with the world!
Pay attention to when you get caught up in comparison. How does comparison feel?
What’s good in your life?
Check that list against your to-do list and to accomplish list
Take that NAP!
Guidepost 7: Cultivating Play and Rest, Letting Go of Exhaustion as a Status Symbol and Productivity as Self-Worth
Sleep and Rest go hand in hand. Sleep debt is real! Pay your debts.
“Play is the stick that stirs the drink. It is the basis of all art, games, books, sports, movies, fashion, fun, and wonder—in short, the basis of what we think of as civilization. Play is the vital essence of life. It is what makes life lively.”
― Stuart M. Brown Jr., Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul
May 2008 TED Talk : https://www.ted.com/talks/stuart_brown_play_is_more_than_just_fun?language=en
“Kids don't run to get in shape; they run to feel the wind in their face and the grass beneath their feet. Kids don't chat over coffee; they make jokes and play games with their friends. Kids don't network; they bond while they're having fun together. There is no ego. There is no guilt. There is no past to regret, and no future to worry about. They just play.”
― Charlie Hoehn, Play It Away: A Workaholic's Cure for Anxiety
ACTION STEPS:
Schedule time for unstructured play. Have a dance party- even if you have 2 left feet. Heck, play with slime!
Notice when the thought that “play and rest are luxuries” shows up in your mind. That’s like a warning sign that you’re in need of rejuvenation. Use it as an opportunity to recommit to your top self-care practices.
Brene suggests - make a list of “Ingredients for joy and meaning”- what specific conditions are in place when everything feels good?
GUIDEPOST 8: Cultivating Calm and Stillness and Letting Go of Anxiety as a Lifestyle
Calm is a practice!
“Creating perspective and mindfulness while managing emotional reactivity”- Brene Brown
“The Dance of Connection”- managing anxiety- over functioning or under functioning
ACTION STEPS
Find what works for you
Mindfulness- Start a daily meditation practice or a 5 min journaling practice
GUIDEPOST 9: Cultivating Meaningful Work, Letting Go of Self-Doubt and Supposed-To
What is meaningful work?
Self-doubt undermines the process of finding our gifts and sharing them with the world- Brene Brown
Imposter syndrome
Supposed to- the battle cry of fitting in, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and proving yourself
To overcome these- we have to start owning the messages
What makes us afraid
What's on our supposed to list
Who says so?
Why?
Do not ignore these messages- acknowledge them, write them down and ask the messaged “What do you do? Where are you from? How are you armor? Can I let you go and be safe?”
I’m a wife, mom, CRNA, Mentor, Digital course creator, Life Coach, - The slash effect. You contain multitudes.
Overcoming self-doubt is all about believing we are enough and letting go of what the world says we are supposed to be and call ourselves
ACTION STEPS:
Identify what meaningful means to you
Reflect on what your unique gifts are, and start sharing them with the world. As Howard Thurman instructs: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
When you notice that you’re should-ing on yourself, pause and switch directions. Drop “should” and “supposed-to” from your vocabulary and replace it with “want.” (So “I should do X” becomes “I want to do X/Y/Z.”)
GUIDEPOST 10: Cultivating Laughter, Song, and Dance. And Letting Go of Cool and Always in Control
Next time you have the thought “But what if people think I’m weird…” Remember that fitting in is far less important than making authentic connections with others. Don’t let a fear of looking weird prevent you from doing the things that serve you.
ACTION STEPS:
Make a playlist that helps you let go and be goofy and lean into the joy of movement and singing
Notice the little opportunities for laughter and play and take them
IN SUMMATION
Play, dance, take joy in not comparing your creativity with anyone else's, take a nap, slow down, notice your “shoulds” and take solace in the fact that you are enough as you are right now in this moment.

The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are by Brené Brown
https://amzn.to/3rYlvTQ
Introduction to wholehearted living
According to Brené Brown, “Wholehearted living is about engaging with our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion and connection to wake up in the morning and think, ‘No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.’ It’s going to bed at night thinking, ‘Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.”
Wholehearted living is a process and a journey of a lifetime- what do we bring along? What does it take to live and love from a place of worthiness? Embrace imperfection? Cultivate what we need and get rid of the things holding us back?
Courage, compassion, connection- the tools we need→ the gifts of imperfection
Practices- the courage to reach out. “You learn courage by encouraging”- you learn motherhood by mothering
Shame- practice courage and reach out. We have the right to own our story and share it with someone who has earned the right to hear it, whom we can count on to respond with compassion
Comparative suffering and shame
Courage- cor- latin for heart
We can be compassionate and hold others accountable for their behaviors with boundaries
Love and belonging go hand in hand. Worthiness has no prerequisites. Self love and compassion is KEY
Shame, fear, and vulnerability
Who do you become when you’re backed into the shame corner?
How do you protect yourself?
Who do you call to work through it?
What's the most courageous thing you could do for yourself when you feel small and hurt?
We don't need love and belonging from everyone in our lives, but we need if from at least one person
THE WHOLEHEARTED LIVING GUIDEPOSTS- PART ONE

Numbing - if you numb the negative, you numb the positive
Alcohol, drugs, food, sex, codependecny, money, taking care of others, overplanning, staying busy, overspending
Purpose, meaning and perspective move us forward
AEIOUY- Have I been abstinent today, have I exercised today, what have I done for myself today, what have i done for others today, am i holding on to Unexpressed emotions today, Yeah! What’s something good that's happened today
Cultivating gratitude and joy. Letting go of scarcity and fear of the dark
Gratitude is a practice
Gratitude vs toxic positivity- Not denial of the comfort or discomfort in our lives
Cultivating intuition and trusting faith
Intuition tells us what we need to do
Intuition is not a single way of knowing- it's our ability to hold space for uncertainty and our willingness to trust the many ways we've developed knowledge and insight, including instinct, experience, faith and reason
“Something told me”
See you next week!

Shame Resilience Theory (SRT) . (Credits- Brene Brown)
SRT offers a working definition of shame and a conceptual identity for shame. Through the
development of a continuum schematic, SRT describes the main concerns of women experiencing shame and identifies the strategies and processes women find effective in developing shame resilience (see Figure 2).
Additionally, the theory identifies 11 topical areas that present distinct challenges for women.

Benefits of outsourcing household tasks
Barriers to outsourcing- Guilt
"Powerful famous women don’t say out loud that they have help at home, that they have nannies, housekeepers, chefs, assistants, stylists―whatever it is they have to keep their worlds spinning because they are ashamed. Or maybe a more precise way to say it is that these women have been shamed.”- Shonda Rhymes

Key Takeaways- Check your priorities, resources, and abilities. If you enjoy certain tasks, you don't have to outsource them. Make the decisions that best suit your family, and don't let the mommy- shamers get to you.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant.
Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying (or six months if a woman is 35 or older). Women who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may also be infertile.

🤱🏾 I think that it’s sad that in 2020, working moms in America still feel unsupported by their employers when it comes to breastfeeding. Many healthcare mamas cite their struggles with finding a proper place to pump at work( I’ve heard of mamas pumping in the bathroom at work), getting flack for taking pumping breaks, or being shamed that their pumping is decreasing their productivity.
🤱🏾How sad is it that we are expected to give excellent care to our patients yet get little support when we want to ensure that we continue to provide nourishment for our children?
🤱🏾And let’s not forget the people who take issue with mothers nursing their children in Public and expect them to go do it in the bathroom. Please support moms in their breastfeeding journey.
My name is Shiro Bergbauer, DNP, CRNA. I am a wife, mom, and certified registered nurse anesthetist. I have been in healthcare for the past 16 years, and a mom since 2018.
We take care of other people at work and at home. We aren’t always equipped for the transition from clinician to working mom, and this isn’t how it should be.
Stethoscopes to Swaddles was born to address this need. My goal it to help moms in medicine, nursing, and allied health in their transition to working motherhood. We all seek balance and I’m here to help you find that ❤️ And let me be the person to remind you: “You’re doing a great job, mama!”
