After 10 years in cyber security, Ashley Woodhall has seen a lot of change but crucially, he's learned that good security is just doing a couple of things consistently, and doing them very well. Practical Infosec helps purpose-led organisations do those things very well, so they can do the good in the world they want while being protected. Ashley started the business after making himself a promise in 2019: If the next full-time employment role didn’t work out for any reason, he would build something myself which had meaning. He's now finding meaning through his work, helping purpose-led organisations. In addition to a BSc in cyber security, Ashley is certified to GCIH (ability to identify and respond to cyber attacks) and GCCC (ability to carry out audits against the Critical Security Controls). He has worked in technical, risk management and strategic roles and for the last two years has been running Practical Infosec. Ashley is a mentor to students both privately and through organisations such as CAPSLOCK and the North East Business Resilience Centre (NEBRC). He has also served on a board of directors for 3 years. Outside of work, Ashley can be found (out of place) in Barcelona's hipster cafes, watching Liverpool FC, laughing out loud at Bill Bryson's travel books or getting lost in the city.

He has so far avoided external investment, worried that it would get in the way of his family life but also wanted to prove that you could build and scale a SaaS business through customer revenue. He is fascinated by what it means to be a manager – why middle management has become a dirty word, why management is seen as inferior to leadership, how managers also need to be coaches, mentors as well as holding their team members to account. Have you ever opened your calendar and experienced a wave of dread at the rectangle of back-to-back meetings before you?
With remote work eliminating the need to so much as walk down the hall to a conference room, never-ending calls are a worsening problem, impacting productivity, encouraging overwork, and contributing to burnout.
Perhaps a simple solution--say, shortening meeting defaults by 5-10 minutes--could help. Or reflecting on when "this could've been an email" applies to a meeting you organized. Maybe politely declining invites when you're not needed could do the trick. Whatever the approach, if your calendar resembles a fortress, it's time to lay siege.

This episode features Kieron van Rooyen, Managing Director and Property Strategist at Turnkies. Kieron has extensive knowledge and experience in property strategy. Using property science, analytics and market research, Kieron has assisted clients from listed property funds, to emerging retailers with building effective property strategies. During his involvement with the Gauteng Chapter of the South African Council of Shopping Centres, Kieron lead the team responsible for creating a leasing standard document for the industry. He also spent a number of years overseeing teams responsible for the design and building of retail outlets.
Our conversation focuses on the short and long-term impacts of Covid-19 on office real estate. We talk about how employers can make working from home more comfortable, how the office will change once employees can return, and the potential to shift to different office models such as co-working spaces.
We also spend time reflecting on how the present moment will reshape employee expectations. “We’re putting trust at the forefront of what you should expect from your employer when you return to work,” said Kieron.
