Discouraged because all of the job postings seem to require a few years of pharma experience? Wondering how you’re supposed to get a job to get experience, if all of the jobs require prior experience?

Although most job postings are written that way, many of them don’t actually require prior experience in pharma. It’s really a myth - and so important for physicians who want to work in pharma to understand.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • Why you CAN get an industry job without prior experience
  • How much training actually happens during the onboarding process
  • What types of programs are out there to encourage career growth

Today, I address a really common misconception about needing prior experience in order to get physician job opportunities within the pharmaceutical and medical device industry. Listen to this episode to understand what I mean:

In this Episode:

[1:30] The “prior experience” myth and getting your foot in the door
[3:50] Why you can - and should - look outside of your speciality

Was there any bright side to 2020? To be sure, 2020 was pretty rough for a lot of reasons. With so much going on in the world that is inarguably terrible, it can be hard to focus on any silver lining from 2020. Yet, happiness experts and researchers agree that we should indeed look for and celebrate positive moments or events.

Today’s episode comes from Kristen, a long-time friend and colleague of mine, asking a private Facebook group, “Tell me something you achieved 2020. Not even humble brag, modifier, good girl, downplaying, minimizing...just brag! You’ve earned it.” Indeed, well over 500 women physician members commented with their wins, large and small (myself included). They have many, many reasons to be proud.

So I was inspired to start off The Career Rx 2021 by reflecting on my own wins from 2020. I’ll share with you four practices I implemented this past year that really made a difference. But they aren’t just wins for me - they each come with a nugget of wisdom I hope you can apply to your own life. Start off 2021 by giving these some thought, and take this year to an entirely new ‘best’ level!

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • Habits and boundaries, boundaries, boundaries
  • Turning off and unplugging - for real - with a daring email autoresponder
  • Meditation practice like you’ve never experienced
  • The benefits of fulfilling commitments, no matter how small

Follow this episode as I map out four things that were great for me in 2020. I’m sharing my experiences in hopes of each one having a little bit of a lesson or spark of inspiration, that you can take to apply to your own life for a really fantastic 2021.

“Knowing that you can trust yourself makes pretty much anything possible.” - Marjorie Stiegler

In this Episode:

[1:15] Acknowledging the positives of 2020
[2:30] Celebrate your big or small wins with me on Twitter
[3:05] Putting my own advice to the test (highly recommend)
[3:30] The magic of setting your quitting time (see Episode 11 for more)
[5:00] Do you take time off work to catch up on work?
[6:50] My bombshell email autoresponder might blow your mind - and it works!
[8:00] Cut the cord and free yourself from the guilt of not responding

Do you struggle to advocate or negotiate for yourself (but aren’t at all afraid to speak up for someone else)? Are you afraid of being perceived as overconfident, greedy, or pushy?

If you’re worrying too much about how others might view you, or if you have trouble finding the mindset or words to advocate for yourself, this episode is for you.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • Styles of negotiation, and a critical mindset shift
  • How self advocacy manifests in professional opportunities (or lack thereof) - it’s not just money!
  • “Healthy entitlement” - what it means, and how you can use it

Today we’re going to be talking about everyday negotiation situations. Inspired by a question asked at a virtual conference I attended. Selena Rezvani was the speaker, and she asked us: “What is the number one word that comes to mind, for you, when you think of advocating for yourself?” The responses (and her follow-up) were too good to not share.

This episode explores why professional women think the way we do about how we show up and ask professionally. After this episode, you’ll think of self advocacy, negotiation, and healthy entitlement in an entirely new way.

“If you are delivering that value, you're absolutely entitled to the compensation and to the reward, that delivering that value has earned you.” - Marjorie Stiegler

Do you want to move up within your company or organization? Do you fear your career development is stagnant? Are your goals aligned with your boss' goals, or do they differ? These are common midcareer concerns.

If you have big growth goals but zero explicit plans to make them happen, today’s your day to turn it around. Most people dread their annual reviews because they don’t know what to discuss - or how to discuss - what they really should be addressing with their boss. In fact, many people don’t even realize that they can use the opportunity to take some control. Sounds appealing? This episode is for you.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • Four things you should discuss with your boss to help you advance thoughtfully
  • Where to find additional (and deliberate!) growth opportunities
  • How to approach “succession planning” - not just for royalty!

Today we're going to be talking about your annual review and how to actually leverage this time for your own benefit (instead of sweating the evaluation and feedback that makes so many people really nervous). This topic came directly from the listener question, as usual. Mitch writes, “Thank you so much for Episode 29 about how to get the best results using recruiters [we were talking about nonclinical career transitions, among other things]. But what about if you want to move up withinyour (current) company or organization?” So, in this episode we’re going to cover some strategies to plot your career growth in a deliberate way that accelerates your advancement, whether that’s within your own organization or a new one.

Listen in to hear four topics you should discuss with your boss during your annual (quarterly, or monthly) review. I'm sharing how to navigate having a transparent discussion about compensation, long-term goals, and gaining a deeper understanding of your company’s succession plans (or lack thereof).

“You should never have your career development on hold.” - Marjorie Stiegler

In this Episode:

[01:16] Why you should never put your career development on ‘pause’ for the sake of getting the current work done

[02:45] An easy way to set up potentially difficult conversations with your boss

[3:30] What most people get wrong when writing goals and objectives (hint: it’s not about the SMART framework)

[5:52] What work will actually get you promoted, and what simply isn’t going to get you there. (Note - it matters how you frame and brand your work.)

[6:42] How does your salary compare to what you’re really worth? Find out...

[8:48] What will get you to the next level? You may have some skill or experience gaps - here’s how to fill them.

[10:42] Succession planning, and why your boss/organziation should absolutely be on board with it

[13:36] Documentation and timeline for your intended next move - it matters more than you may realize

[15:44] Evaluating your promotion plan and next steps

Does your work environment feel toxic or make you feel valued? What has your boss said in the last week that made you feel like your boss cares about you as a person?

If you often feel like your organization doesn’t care about your wellbeing, or they pay a lot of lip-service but don’t really mean it (mandatory Saturday wellness retreat, anyone?), this episode is for you.

As always, this episode is inspired by a comment from a listener: Katie wrote to me saying, “Thank you for the Industry Insider webinar series. Using what I learned in your course, I was able to finally get a position that makes me feel valued.”

It’s not an earth-shattering comment, but it felt so very timely, because especially with COVID, I know that so many of you are not feeling valued. Many of you feel trapped, and even unsafe or expendable. That’s not OK.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • Five things my boss* said just this week that will surprise you
  • Signs of a toxic workplace
  • Workplace expectations around vacation time
  • What to look for in your current or future company culture

Today, I’m going to give you five real-world examples of surprising things upper management say (and mean!) that I’ve heard myself very recently. These are phrases and ideas that, I feel, show your company really values you as a person. Or at least, that mine does, and I believe you deserve the same.

Lots of people love their colleagues but generally don’t feel like they have a supportive work environment when it comes from the top. Your boss sets the tone for your workplace culture. He or she should be saying the right things, saying them often, and leading by example.

*When I talk about ‘my boss’ in this episode, I mean either my actual boss, or another leader in an organization with which I am professionally affiliated. These are real statements, but I’m not intending to attribute all of them to any specific person.

Whether you’re considering a new employer or a new career entirely, or putting your current company culture into perspective, this episode will help you align you and your company’s values.

You absolutely deserve to be unapologetic about putting your family and your own self-care first. - Marjorie Stiegler

In this Episode:

[2:19] Is this what you hear at the office, or in your faculty meetings?

[2:48] What my boss says about when family comes first (yes, when)

[4:30] What my boss says about taking vacation – and what you’re expected to do during that time

[6:15] What my boss says about being able to get in touch with me at night or on a weekend

[8:23] What my boss says about my responsibility while my colleagues are away

[9:50] What my boss says about being called out, and what I hope you’re saying if you’re the boss!

[11:30] How to make this episode actionable in your own work environment

[12:19] Reality check on your expectations and what you deserve at work

Are people undervaluing your contribution? Do you feel like your expertise goes unnoticed or under appreciated? Despite being excellent at what you do, do you sometimes feel invisible while others get credit for your ideas?

If you’re tired of being passed over for promotions, or people not perceiving you as the valuable strategic leader that you are, this is the episode for you.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • What it means to “audition” for a role you already have
  • Charmaine McClarie and her Executive Success Principles
  • Common mistakes you need to quit, and what to do instead
  • Three ways to transform how people perceive you as a leader

I recently had the opportunity to virtually attend the Pennsylvania Conference for Women and it was really enlightening. As I was listening to the speakers one in particular stood out to me because she got me to think about one of my favorite topics in an entirely new way. You know I’m all about professional branding - how others perceive you, and ultimately, promote you. This session was an excellent take on the same overall topic.

The speaker was Charmaine McClarie, an executive coach focused on helping leaders get more visibility and get promoted. She was presenting her paradigm of 6 “Executive Success Principles” but there was one specifically that captured my attention. She said “stop auditioning for the role”. Essentially, she was making the case that lots of folks who get passed up for promotions and recognition at work aren’t fully owning their roles, and instead come across as if they are “auditioning” to be a leader.

As I was listening I couldn’t help but think of ways that you could stop auditioning and start showing leadership in your role. If you want more responsibility, opportunity, and visibility for your contributions, you’ve got to show up in a different way.

Listen in to hear three ways that you can show yourself as a leader in your role. I’m sharing why you need to stop waiting to share your opinions, why you need to stop apologizing for those opinions, and how you can take control of your opportunity universe and show that you are ready for more.

Do the thing that you are already charged to do and do it fully. - Marjorie Stiegler

In this Episode:

[01:28] Why you should attend a variety of events that aren’t specific to your career (hello, Pennsylvania Conference for Women!).

[02:25] What Charmaine McClarie means by “stop auditioning for the role”

[04:00] Why it’s so important that you stop auditioning for the role you already have.

[04:22] You’re the expert. Why are you waiting to be asked for your opinions?

[5:56] If you’re doing this, you aren’t actually behaving like a strategic thought partner.

[07:02] What your language actually says about you.

[8:10] How to upgrade your word choice so you sound like a leader.

[09:17] Expand your universe of professional possibilities. Here’s how.

[11:29] Strategies for taking charge of your network and build your expert reputation.

[13:14] Reality check - if you’re being passed over, you probably aren’t doing what you’ve already been hired to do!

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • Why negative feedback is just as valuable as positive feedback
  • How to receive negative feedback without taking it personally
  • How to ensure you hear the feedback you need
  • Ways to get more out of negative feedback and continue the conversation
  • How to turn negative feedback into a glowing review

Last week we were discussing how you could use positive feedback to improve your work (whether that’s your business or yourself as a professional) and how to create tangible business assets from the feedback you get. This week I want to share how you can use less than stellar feedback to build relationships, grow in your business and skills, and perhaps create even stronger business assets (really!).

These two episodes are a great introduction into the ways that you can put feedback to good use in your business or practice, but if you’d like to go deeper, we get into this with lots of specific strategies and tactics in Modules 1 and 6 of The Branding Rx Course - be sure to check that out!

The first thing to remember is that no matter what kind of feedback you’re receiving, the person providing it is taking their time to tell you how they feel. Whether they intend to help you improve, or they’re sharing their disappointment with their own experience in mind, either way they’re invested in the conversation. They’re taking time and effort to share information and perspective, and this is a gift - so, remember to make them feel heard.

All feedback is useful, whether you agree with it or not. Every bit of feedback can be used in different ways. It’s your job to keep track of the feedback you’re provided, think about it, and determine how to make it useful right now.

Always remember to ask additional questions. Many times the issue with feedback is that it’s too general. Asking clarifying questions gives you a better chance to turn negative feedback into something actionable.

I’m not saying that you should incorporate every bit of feedback that you’re given. Instead, this episode will help you preserve relationships, ensure an enduring stream of feedback in the future, and determine which pieces of advice would actually help move you, your brand, or your business forward.

Listen in to learn all four of my tips for taking negative feedback into something that is good for you professionally.

Feedback is always an opportunity for growth. It's a way to see our own blind spots. It's a way to understand if we're coming across in a way that we don't intend, which matters, of course, because that hinders our effectiveness. - Marjorie Stiegler

In this Episode:

[00:43] This week we’re continuing the conversation about feedback by discussing the negative side.

[02:55] Learn the first of four things you should do when you receive less than stellar feedback.

[04:28] What should you do next?

[06:14] Why you should express appreciation for the feedback.

[07:57] The last step that you need to help strengthen relationships and give you a chance for reflection.

[10:12] There is potentially value in just about any feedback.

[11:57] One quick bonus thought.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • How to receive better feedback from others
  • Deliberately seeking the right kind of feedback
  • Turning feedback into actionable steps toward growth
  • Ways to operationalize your feedback process

I recently received a message from one of my students in the Industry Insider program thanking me for the program and letting me know that it was key to her landing a new job. This recent exchange was the inspiration for this podcast episode, because it was a great reminder of how important it is to leverage feedback opportunities and make the most of them!

So often we leave good and bad feedback at the comment itself. We forget to dig deeper and find out additional information about the feedback, the person giving it, and ways we can use the feedback constructively.

In this example, I could have just focused on the compliment and enjoyed feeling bubbly about it, but that would have been a missed opportunity. Instead I asked her some follow up questions to try and dig a little bit deeper and gain more insight on exactly how the program helped her. Doing that helped me better understand who would benefit from my program and how, AND resulted in a tangible professional asset. Let me explain...

The Industry Insider program is a 4-part webinar series that walks you through what you need to know about landing a nonclinical career without a new degree, a foot in the door, prior experience, or a pay cut. It helps you to better understand the industry overall and therefore excel in the interview process.

Listen in to hear all about ways to use positive feedback to better your career and/or business. Then tune in next week to learn how you can do the same with negative feedback.

“Sometimes feedback feels good and we just don’t want to push it. Sometimes feedback doesn’t feel good and we feel defensive or we feel like the person delivering it has ill will against us or doesn’t like us and so we miss the opportunity...to get constructive feedback.” - Marjorie Stiegler

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • The allies you need - in addition to sponsors and mentors - in your network
  • Why you need to have a variety of different functional allies in your network
  • 7 types of allies, and what each one can do for you
  • What you should be doing in return

In the old days, you’d get assigned a work mentor, and that was that. More recently, there’s a lot of discussion about having a sponsor in addition to a mentor, and savvy docs know the difference between those two types of allies (and why you need both). However, it’s not sufficient to have just one or two people in your corner. Plus, it’s more effective to have several different types of people in your robust network to help you continue moving upward in your career - or to help you when you want to change completely.

I was inspired to put together this episode after I received a message on LinkedIn from one of my very loose connections (someone I really don’t know at all) asking if I would be willing to mentor her as she navigates a career change. So, in thinking about mentoring someone for a career change, it’s helpful to consider more broadly the kind of people who can really help you.

In this episode, we’ll talk more about these 7 allies that you need in your network, why you need them, and what you yourself should be doing to add value to the mix.

The 7 allies are:

  • The Flag Flyer
  • The Mirror
  • The Booster
  • The Political Strategist
  • The Coach
  • The Bridge Builder
  • The Influencer

As you listen to this episode, take out a pen and paper and start writing down some of the people you know that fill these roles. Listen to the end as I share exactly how you can approach them to create an even stronger connection and keep them in your network.

“I think well beyond having sponsors and mentors, the most powerful network is filled with allies who perform specific roles” - Marjorie Stiegler

In this Episode:

[00:43] The importance of allies in networking and why this topic came up

[02:27] Who do you need in your network specifically?

[04:04] Learn more about the Flag Flyer

[05:11] Why it’s important to have someone in your corner who can reflect the truth back to you

[06:09] Who you need when you don’t want advice or truth (there’s a time and a place for both)

[06:59] Who are your political allies?

[08:11] Why you should have a non-directive coach in your corner

[9:00] Is your ‘authenticity’ really a fixed mindset that’s holding you back?

[09:43] Do you know how to leverage the bridge builders?

[11:00] The influencers in your organization are not always the people at the ‘top’

[12:19] Why you should have a list of people who fill each of these roles.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • The top 5 authenticity traps that keep you from finding success in your career
  • What being authentic in a work environment really means
  • How “authenticity” can hold you back
  • Why adaptive authenticity is what you should strive for

What does it mean to be your “true” or “authentic” self in the workplace? One of my amazing listeners, Shelley, wrote in with a note about how she had been shying away from her own personal branding without realizing that she was hindering her upward mobility at work. She thought it was more authentic to stay quiet even though she knew that she was being passed over. Then, she had an a-ha moment.

In recent years, there has been a push for employees and employers to be more ‘authentic’ and true to themselves in the workplace, but what does that really mean? What does it mean to be authentic?

In this episode, I share some views on this topic, and ask the important - but often controversial questions about whether/how the concept of authenticity can actually hold us back from what we really want (and what our ‘true self’ really wants is indeed part of our authenticity!).

When viewed rigidly, being authentic to your “true” self could spell disaster for your career and your personal brand. It’s important to be authentic, and to keep a wide and adaptive view of what that really means. This is one of the core principles that we explore at the TransforMD Mastery Retreat - a special event for women physicians only offered once a year (with registration open right now - check it out!).

Listen in to learn:

  • Why ‘authenticity’ can reinforce self-limiting beliefs (this is a bad thing!)
  • How leaning on what feels authentic to you may be holding you back from growth
  • Why some definitions of authenticity ignores the importance of how others receive you, and this could be potentially damaging
  • What causes ‘authenticity’ to interfere with your results
  • When ‘authenticity’ may undermine your credibility (and when it helps)

As you listen, consider whether you really have a “true” self at all. Because we are constantly learning, growing, and evolving as we gain wisdom, age, and experience, I believe instead we have many selves, including a predominant “current” self, but no single ‘true self’.

“This quest to be authentic can sometimes be self-limiting.” - Marjorie Stiegler

In this Episode:

[00:42] Today we’re chatting about authenticity in the workplace and professional success.

[02:10] Do we know what authenticity really means?

[04:47] Learn more about the first authenticity trap.

[05:41] The importance of self-limiting beliefs and other stories we tell ourselves

[06:53] Rigid authenticity may be holding you back from growth. Learn why.

[09:04] Why authenticity (when expressed rigidly) ignores other people, and why that leads to self-sabotage

[11:17] Does authenticity interfere with results?

[15:31] Can authenticity undermine your credibility? Authenticity can help boost connectedness, but only if you have something else first.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • The top 5 causes of burnout, according to the top expert
  • What leaders can do to prevent or mitigate burnout - because burnout is about the workplace, not the people doing the work!
  • Tool to tackle the core causes of burnout - you don’t have to have a leadership role or title to start with these
  • What your boss really should be doing - and it’s probably not what you think.

What can leaders do to prevent burnout? No matter if you’re a leader by title or by behavior, there are several things that you can do to tackle burnout within your organization.

As we all know now, burnout is not about individuals - it’s about the workplace environment. We’ve got to focus on the environment for solutions. Admittedly, unless you’re the CEO, you’re still in the boat where you as an individual are being asked to solve an organizational problem.

So what are the top 5 causes of burnout? Per Dr. Christina Maslach, one of the foremost burnout researchers, they are:

  • Unfair treatment at work
  • Unmanageable workload
  • Lack of role clarity
  • Lack of communication and support from their manager
  • Unreasonable time pressure

Burnout is an extremely important topic to address. I hope this episode will inspire you and equip you to be a powerful proponent of change in your organization.

In this Episode:

[00:43] Burnout in the workplace is an epidemic.

[02:02] What burnout is really about, and why it’s not the people who need fixing.

[03:41] The top 5 causes of burnout.

What does it take to stay relevant professionally and to get ahead today? This episode isn’t specific to the medical field but is extremely applicable regardless. You see with the ever changing dynamics of business and medicine, there are certain things we must do to grow and evolve with the times, and to place our brands in the best light.

I recently read two articles of general career advice that I felt dove-tailed into the topic of branding very nicely. The first was “To Create Your Own Luck, Do Any 1 of These 5 Things” by Jeff Haden and the second “How to Reimagine the Second Half of Your Career” by Jeff Gothelf.

In the first, the Mr. Haden discusses the phenomenon of luck as it pertains to entrepreneurship and business. So many successful people are either perceived as having had a “lucky” break or they themselves attribute their success to luck. How much of that “luck” was true coincidence and circumstance and how much relates to habits of behavior that successful people have developed?

The second article is all about the ways in which to better and reimagine the second half of your career. Mr. Gothelf's core message was that to become "forever employable", no matter if that is for yourself with clients or for your employer you have to have a certain mindset and cultivate certain qualities.

In this Episode:

[00:42] Welcome back for a round up of great business advice I've recently read.

[03:15] Learn the five things you should do to create your own luck.

[06:41] What 'lucky' people ask for.

[08:48] Ways you can apply these five things to your own life.

This is the third in a series about professional branding, and today we’re focused on how your brand is conveyed on a website. I chose this topic because I’m often asked questions like:

What should I put on my physician website? What doesn’t belong on my website?  How do I make my brand clear on my website?

I'm going to be building off of Episodes 30 and 31. We have already addressed what professional branding is (and what it isn’t), and we addressed some examples of what a good professional brand looks like using a four-part framework for communicating your professional brand. If you missed those, go back now!

For this episode, I was so thrilled to get a submission from Dr. Linda Bluestein, from hypermobilitymd.com.  This is a really fabulous, well-done website. I think there's also some room for improvement, which is a really great illustration of what we're talking about here.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

  • How to figure out what belongs on your website (and where it goes!)
  • How to make it clear who you are and who you help
  • A critique of a real physician’s website!

Hey there, in this episode of The Career Rx, we're going to talk more about professional branding, building from last week’s episode. You've already got the four part framework, but implementing this can be a challenge without clear examples.

What does a good professional brand look like?

What are examples of professional brand language?

How do I communicate my professional branding on my website? We're going to answer that using examples from EntreMD.com, JillWener.com, and KevinMD.com.

The term ‘professional branding’ is everywhere these days, but there are lots of misconceptions about what this actually means.  Here are some questions I’m often asked: What is professional branding?  Why do you need a professional brand? How does professional branding help your career? What are the benefits of my professional brand to my colleagues or employer?

In This Episode of The Career Rx We’ll Discuss:

  • What professional branding really is (hint: not a logo or a slogan)
  • The benefits of a strong professional brand strategy
  • Misconceptions about professional brands

Today on the podcast we're talking about disclosures, disclaimers and conflicts of interest.

You might not realize the number of guidelines and requirements that pertain to your online activity.

I am a big believer in curating your online presence and making sure it demonstrates your highlight reel. It puts your professional best foot forward.

Having a strong online presence is important for:

  • Professional branding and career growth.
  • Growing a profitable side gig.
  • Laying the groundwork for a leadership role or even a nonclinical physician career role.
  • Establishing yourself as a thought leader.

Whatever you’re doing online with your website and social media - engaging in education, networking, thought leadership, even marketing and selling - it's very important to be sure that you are providing the right context online.

This is where disclosures and disclaimers come into play.

In This Episode of The Career Rx We’ll Discuss:

  • What exactly are disclaimers, disclosures, and conflicts of interest - and how do they apply online?
  • The 3 most important disclaimers for doctors online - for medical liability, side gigs, and affiliated organizations

  • FDA additional disclosure rules for medical products (for you online influencers who are getting paid by pharmaceutical or device companies)

Today on the podcast, we'll be talking about social media policy - both your personal and professional social media policy in the era of COVID-19.

Many physicians and many of my colleagues are being increasingly active online, either through their own blogs or social media platforms.

Whatever digital platform you're using, many are being approached by others to do a guest blog or to give an interview. As physicians, many of us are being asked to provide interviews and information to major media, but many of us don't have formal media training.

And increasingly, doctors on social media are getting into trouble with their employers because of COVID-19 related posts and interviews. Some doctors and nurses are getting fired, threatened, or otherwise reprimanded. I’m not going to comment on the legality or ethics of those specific cases, and I’m not an attorney, but I hope this podcast will help you do your own homework and make smart decisions about how you represent yourself online.

In This Episode of The Career Rx We’ll Discuss:

Social Media Policies for Doctors in the COVID-19 Era - Episode 13These include:

  • Understanding your employer’s detailed social media policy so you can act accordingly
  • Remaining consistent with your professional brand in all communications
  • Developing your messaging strategy in advance
  • Including disclaimers/disclosures in your communications
