Not only does it shape how we ‘bounce back’, it also affects the way we think, feel and act in every day situations.

We explore the many elements of resilience which is not only relevant to the sector we work in – catastrophic injury – but to all of us as human beings. Throughout the series we’ll be joined be guests who will discuss health, diet, sleep, relationships and much more.

As part of National Grief Awareness Week 2021, Helen Jackson, Managing Director at Bush & Co is joined by Elizabeth Burton-Philips MBE and founder of The Nicholas Mills Foundation, operating as DrugFAM who provide a lifeline of safe and caring support to families, friends and partners affected by drug, alcohol or gambling problems.

Elizabeth founded the charity following immense pain and trauma. In 2004 she lost Nick, one of her twin sons, to suicide. Elizabeth was a teacher and an ordinary mother who never imagined that her twin sons Nick and Simon would be involved in drugs.

Following Nick’s tragic death, Elizabeth has campaigned continuously to raise awareness of the harm caused to families by drug addiction and to influence policy and practice so that the needs of families are better recognised and met.

In this episode Elizabeth shares her personal experience, coping with trauma, building resilience, self-care and strength as well as discussing the amazing support available through DrugFAM.

Heidi Herkes is a personal stylist helping to inspire and motivate people, showcasing how to live a fulfilling life with a disability. Following a fall at home, Heidi now lives with a C4/C5 incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

Sophie Shane works in human resources and a spinal cord stroke four years ago left her paralysed from the chest down.

In this episode, Helen Jackson, Managing Director at Bush & Co talks to Mike Lewis, ex- paratrooper on the importance of resilience following major trauma and being medically discharged from the army as well as life as an amputee and the importance of community and role models.

In 2008, Mike was a Corporal serving in Afghanistan in the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment. On his second term, with only six weeks until he could return home, he was engaged by enemy forces but hit by British artillery during an intense fire fight. Mike was left with blast wounds that nearly severed his arm, shrapnel wounds to his left knee and blast wounds to his right leg which led to a below knee amputation.

His dream of serving in the British armed forces came to an end. Determined to not allow his amputation to dictate his life Mike began setting new goals and has now achieved some incredible life moments for himself and the charities he supports.

Welcome to episode one of a brand new podcast from Bush & Co – The Resilience Toolbox.

Known as the art of ‘recovering from an incident’, resilience is crucial to human coping mechanisms following a life event, traumatic or negative experience or simply everyday struggles. Not only does it shape how we ‘bounce back’, it also affects the way we think, feel and act in every day situations.

In our very first episode we explore the many elements of resilience as an introduction to the topic which is not only relevant to the sector we work in – catastrophic injury – but to all of us as human beings.

Throughout the series we’ll be focusing on dealing with bad news through to new perspectives, relationships and networks and diet and fitness and we’ll be joined by a number of really interesting and expert guests.

In this episode I speak to Helen Jackson, Managing Director at Bush & Co who is also a breast cancer survivor. As a mother, leader and many other roles, I chat to Helen about her experience and we explore the many facets of life that are impacted following trauma and the role resilience plays.
