The 7 Leave No Trace Principles are guidelines for engaging responsibly with the outdoors. With the nice weather here in the Northern Hemisphere, more people are getting outside to hike and camp. So we thought it'd be a good idea to go over these principles! The principles include how to plan, dispose of waste properly, camp responsibly, respect wildlife, be considerate of other hikers/campers, and more. While these may be common sense to some, it's always good to review so that we can more mindfully engage with our beautiful planet. Happy exploring!

Our Alternative Destinations series is back with our long anticipated Buffalo episode! We've been singing the praises of Buffalo ever since the pandemic put a pause on our nomadic wanderings and we settled in Buffalo one year ago (May 2020). It's been a homecoming of sorts for Sam, who lived here for 10 years, but hasn't been back for 10 years!
Buffalo is the second biggest city in New York State (second only to NYC), and is known as the City of Good Neighbors and the City of Light. We talk about Buffalo's fascinating history as THE city to be at the turn of the 20th century, why Buffalo is such a multicultural city with a long history of immigration, the city's interesting mix of Midwestern and Northeast coast vibes, and a lot more.
Of course, we also give you lots of recommendations of things to do, cool neighborhoods to explore, local foods you gotta eat and where (Buffalo is a proud foodie city), and the best ways to explore the city. This episode is all about why we love Buffalo and why it's a great place for alternative travelers to visit!

In this deep dive (pun intended) into cruise travel, Sam looks at the cruise industry from all angles. Why do people love this method of traveling? What are the impacts of cruise travel on the destinations, people, economy, and the environment? What about the humanitarian component of cruise ship workers? Is sustainable, responsible cruising possible? While this episode is a critical look at the cruise industry, we also recognize why people choose cruise travel. We're not here to shame anyone, but rather to educate travelers to be able to make more informed choices. So whether you are curious about cruise travel, have friends and family who love to cruise, or just want to know more about this popular method of travel, this episode is for you!

This week marks the one year mark from the week that everything hit the fan for us as full time house sitters. We were house sitting in Salt Lake City when all our upcoming house sits were cancelled and we had to scramble to figure it all out at the last minute. We've detailed all the gory details of that chapter in previous podcast episodes, so check out episodes 2, 12, and 22 if you're interested.
But in this episode, we're taking a reflective approach, looking back on lessons learned and realizations gained from one year in a pandemic. So many of us are having reflections on how this year has changed us, how it's made us reevaluate or appreciate certain aspects of our lives, and what changes we might need to make going forward. We talk about all of these aspects and more, with the hope it inspires some reflection in our listeners as well. We'd love to hear what reflections you've had, so get in touch and let us know!

In this episode, we share some thoughts and advice on both giving and receiving feedback and criticism online. We talk a lot about ethics and responsible travel on this podcast, and living a mindful life starts with how we treat others with whom we disagree.
Especially when walking the road less traveled, we're all bound to get some negative feedback time and again. We're also bound to come across others with whom we disagree, so we discuss criticism and feedback from both the giving and receiving sides. When we react harshly or without thinking, our feedback will fall on deaf ears, leading to wasted time and energy, frustration, and increased polarization. Starting the conversation in a compassionate and mindful way will lead to a better outcome and learning experience for all.
We'll also talk about outrage and cancel culture, what it's like to be in a public facing role, our experiences with negative feedback, and suggestions for others that are in public facing positions.

Traveling by book is the original virtual travel experience! It's been THE way to transport yourself to another world for centuries. Books can bring you to a different place or time period in the real world or an entirely fictional place. When reading, we use our imaginations, exercise our minds, and travel virtually (but without the involvement of a screen). We'll discuss our early experiences reading, finding the time to read, why read at all, our favorite travel reads, getting travel inspiration from books, and more.

One of the most frequently asked questions we get asked is how do we manage traveling full time AND running a creative business together?! In this episode, we dive into exactly that question.
We've been together for six years (this month!), but due to our lifestyle, we've clocked in more time together than relationships double that length, all while balancing these often relationship-ending stressors. Over the years, we've developed a variety of ways to stay sane, pursue our passions (separately and together), and of course, still very much enjoy being together. Relationships of all kinds are being stressed to their limit right now, with the world coming up on a year (!!) of the pandemic. We thought it'd be a good time to cover some things that we've learned and what's helped us through tough times, from concrete tips to mindset shifts.

How can we maintain friendships when we cannot meet in person? True connection in the virtual space is one that can be difficult to navigate. We've been navigating this space for years as digital nomads and expats as more often than not, we are far from family and friends. We've all become more familiar with Zoom these days, but is that really all there is to it? In this episode, we muse on the topic of virtual friendships, maintaining friendships, the changing nature of friendships, and our personal practices for keeping close friendships even over extended periods of time without seeing each other in person.

What is the impact on the destinations and on the traveler? Is there inherent value in visiting places on these lists? We reflect on all of these questions and share our personal experiences with lists. This episode sparked out of a realization we had recently about a throughline that connects everything we do as creators: transformative travel. We dive deep into what transformative travel is and why it's so important, as well as share some of our most transformative travel experiences. We'll also talk about how this realization is going to guide and shape the direction of the podcast going forward.
We've been getting at this idea in one way or another through this podcast, our blog, and presence on social media. But we think we've finally hit the nail on the head of what exactly we want to champion in the world of travel, and life in general. It's a great conversation, enjoy!

This is another episode in our Alternative Destinations series, where we highlight lesser known places that are worth your visit as an alternative traveler!
This episode is all about Greensboro, North Carolina. Did you know that the Civil Rights Sit-In movement of non-violent protest started in Greensboro? Or that you can still visit where it all started at the International Civil Rights Museum, located in the heart of Greensboro? With the renewed resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement, it's more important than ever to understand Black history in the U.S. so that we can better understand where the nation is today. One of the best ways to do that is to learn from pivotal moments in Civil Rights history, like the Sit-In Movement.
We also discuss other Greensboro claims to fame, as well as fun things to do there (including food, drink, culture, art, and more). Join us for future travel inspiration or just some armchair virtual travel!

In this episode, we're looking at how the colonial mindset appears in travel habits today. First, we'll look at the historical origins of the colonial mindset and then we'll discuss the various ways that this mindset can show up in travel habits today. Some of the things we discuss in the episode may be a bit affronting. Please remember that we're not here to pass judgement, we're just here to gently bring attention and awareness to the ways that we as travelers may be unconsciously perpetuating colonialism through our travel.

While we love our digital nomad life, it's not a lifestyle for everyone. If you're considering full time travel, there are several crucial factors to consider. Digging deep into these pain points BEFORE you take the leap into full time travel could save you a lot of frustration if you end up realizing these things on the road. And if any of these factors seem like a dealbreaker, then maybe full time travel isn't right for you. And that's completely okay! We want to help empower you to make the right travel decisions for you, and that's what this episode is all about.

Should I be house sitting in a pandemic? Is house sitting safe right now? Are there even house sits? What are fellow house sitters doing and thinking about? If I want to house sit right now, how do I approach it?
These are all questions that we keep getting from fellow house sitters, so although we have touched on this topic in other episodes, we thought we'd do a dedicated episode all about on house sitting in a pandemic. We cover our thoughts, what we're doing, how to talk to pet and home owners, and much more.

We ponder these topics in this episode, along with suggestions and tips for figuring out what your values actually are and (if you already know), how to live in better alignment with what matters most to you.

This episode continues our alternative destinations series, where we profile lesser known places to consider for your next trip (when it's safe to do so, of course). Today's alternative destination is Salt Lake City, Utah!
When most people visit Utah, they stay in southern Utah where all the national parks are, never coming up north to Salt Lake City. We think that's a real shame! We share why in this episode where we share Salt Lake's interesting history, cool things to do, outdoor adventures to be had, what we love about the city, and more.

In this episode, we do a deep dive into what's known as "The Airbnb Effect". Though often touted as a way to "live like a local," Airbnb's near ubiquitous presence around the world often has detrimental effects for actual locals. We talk about the negative effects Airbnb has on local communities and what cities around the world are doing to mitigate these effects. But is Airbnb all bad or can it be used ethically? What alternatives to Airbnb exist? What do we do as full time travelers? It's all in this episode!

In this episode, we'll build off of last week's episode, where we discussed the current state of travel during the pandemic, and how to expand our definition of travel. One of those ways is through embracing slow travel. As we'll share, slow travel isn't about length of time in a place: it's a mindset. We'll talk about what slow travel is, how to do it, and most importantly, WHY you should be embracing slow travel, especially now.

As things are opening up in varying degrees around the world, to travel or not to travel is a question on many travelers minds. Is it safe to travel? Should I travel? What should I be thinking about? What about house sitting?
Unfortunately, early re-opening with lax restrictions has led to an increase in cases in more than half of U.S. states. That means more unnecessary deaths, more unnecessary suffering. But does that mean we need to keep staying in our homes?
We tackle the topic of the current state of travel, the questions you should be asking yourself, how to scratch the travel itch (safely), how to handle house sitting right now, and more.

In this episode, we're kicking off our "Alternative Destinations" series, where we showcase lesser traveled and lesser known locations that alternative travelers should consider! Today, we're talking all about Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where we spent 3 months last fall. This Balkan city is infamous for the conflict and siege in the early 90s (if you don't know what we're talking about, don't worry - we'll get into that in the episode), but what's it really like to spend some time there?
We cover everything from the history, culture, food, things to do, and more. We also reflect on why it's important to consider Sarajevo's past in light of contemporary nationalist sentiments and the current pandemic.
NOTE: Due to the ongoing pandemic, we strongly discourage unnecessary international travel at this time. This episode is intended for future travel inspiration and vicarious travel while we are all still staying safe at home.
