The KC Underground Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by different leaders of the KC Underground. The primary focus is intended to offer greater language, tools and equipping around disciple-making principles for missionaries and microchurch leaders.

The third observation states that the most significant momentum in urban spaces appears to be among the broken, marginalized, and poor. These are tough words that often end up creating labels and categories that dismiss people. We want to fight against that. We also want to recognize that the observation is that "the most significant momentum" is among these networks of those that are considered insignificant. We'll get around both of these ideas and how we can appropriately consider this in our observation in our context.

Two Four Eight, a mission organization, released their findings around a study on mission strategies for cities. By 2050, 70% of the world's population will live in an urban context. We have to begin thinking about how our strategies must shift in light of this reality. Over the coming months, we will explore the fifteen key observations from Two Four Eight.

In this episode of the Origin Story of the KC Underground, we get to hear from Michelle and Rob Wegner. This turned into two episodes, actually. As with Cory and Brian, there's a story behind the story. In this first episode with the Wegners, we hear more about what formed them as people and as a family, which in turn shaped the KCU. We try to identify a few important parts of their ministry that have been a part of our founding DNA.
Most of the episodes this year have aimed at being very practical for the everyday leader. We will continue to do that with this podcast. We also have realized we haven't told the story of the Underground much or very directly on our podcast. We share bits and pieces through the last three years, but not one focused telling. We felt like it was time to do that. However, there are multiple versions of this story. Everyone has an angle to it. In the coming months, we'll interview several of the early leaders to hear what they experienced as this little movement was birthed. These practices help us live with greater incarnational intentionality. In this second episode, we'll focus on Purpose. The question we ask with Purpose is, "What has God given you?"

This week begins a four-part interview with Darryl Answer, one of the directors of New Community, a Hub of the Kansas City Underground. The 4Ps are practices that help us live with greater incarnational intentionality. In this first episode, we'll do a high-level overview of the 4Ps and get into Prayer. The question we ask with Prayer is, "What is God saying to you?" Darryl will share how this framework has influenced their larger spiritual family and guides the way they live in and love well the East Side of Kansas City.

In this week's episode we will follow up to other topics on timing in disciple-making. While knowing when to invite people into a DBS or when to introduce prayer is important, there are a host of other topics that we're probably always asking ourselves about. When do we baptize? When do we reproduce leaders? And, so many more. While we can't answer all the questions, we'll begin to explore a few of those questions.
We've got a new nugget in disciple-making this week. This week, we address the topic of timing. How do you know when to introduce prayer? How do you know when to invite people into a discovery Bible Study? We've all got questions on timing because we all have expectations about how fast or slow a group should go. That's what we begin to address with this disciple-making nugget.
Cory and Brian take some time this week to respond to the last two weeks of interviews with Alan Hirsch. While Alan's words have deeply shaped our movement, we recognize that sometimes interviews like the last two weeks might feel more theoretical than practical for the everyday leader. This is what we want to address this week. How do the seven marks of movement impact the ordinary disciple-maker?

In this episode, we get to hang out again with James Mays, one of the key leaders of Share the Hope, a network committed to disciple-making within the formerly incarcerated community. This episode is all about the next nugget in disciple-making: We need to keep it simple. Complex things don't reproduce fast or well. We'll come at this topic from a couple of angles and explore how James contextualizes keeping it simple within the Share the Hope network.

In this episode, Brian interviews Michelle Wegner on the topic of Soul Care in response to the idea that Disciple-making is messy. In the previous episode we highlighted four areas where disciple-making gets tough and four areas where we have made significant mistakes. We were in part saying, "What do we do when it gets hard, or when we make a mistake?" The answer is simple, but not easy. The answer is Soul Care. Michelle unpacks some of her journey and passion around helping others care for their own soul.
In this episode, Cory and Brian walk through the next disciple-making nugget: Disciple-making is messy. We highlight four points about the “harder” parts and four “mistakes” we’ve made as we have attempted to follow Jesus’s commission to “go make disciples.” We usually talk about effective strategies and tools that help us as we make disciples in the everyday stuff of life. The truth is, it’s never easy, and we’re not Jesus, so we’re going to make mistakes along the way. We’ll dive deeper in future episodes, but for now, we want to begin to address the more sobering realities of giving our lives away to others.
Cory and Brian offer a new nugget in disciple-making: To be effective, we must discern our context. The question here is, "To whom have you been sent." In this episode we'll talk about a few different ways that you can begin thinking about your missional context.
Throughout 2023, the first prayer guide of each month is being written by Michael "Sully" Sullivan. Periodically, we'll pull Sully in for a podcast to set up that prayer guide. This week, Brian and Sully will talk through Psalm 71 and the importance of Holy Week in the rhythm of the church, how the Psalms can frame up Holy Week, and then how we can enter into the prayer guide together this week. In the West, we've often been so wrapped up in Palm Sunday, maybe Good Friday, and Easter Sunday, that we miss the beauty of Jesus's actions through the other days. Further, we rarely if ever explore how the Old Testament prepares us for the story. We hope this episode will send you on a journey of exploration in the Pslams and the surrounding narrative of Jesus's suffering, death, burial, and Resurrection.

Cory and Brian discuss how we need to form teams to be more effective in disciple-making. We see "going in teams" in Scripture and we see "going in teams" in global disciple-making movements. We need to embrace this paradigm here and now as well.

Cory and Brian interview Alex and Hannah Absalom. Alex and Hannah have been involved in church planting and microchurch leadership for nearly three decades. They have served the broader church for over 20 years, speaking and ministering in person in over 15 countries and almost 25 US states (and many more virtually!). For the past four years, they have been full-time with Dandelion Resourcing, working with a vast range of leaders, churches, and denominations. At a local level, they have personally crafted effective disciple-making and leadership pipelines, overseen the starting of over 130 mid-sized missional communities and empowered numerous individuals with Biblical teaching and practices that enable them to operate in the power of the Spirit wherever they live, work, learn and play.

Cory and Brian interview Jill and Bill Randall. Jill and Bill have been church planters and now lead the Gospel Movements Team for Novo, which is a band of creative missionaries sent to multiply movements of the gospel and mobilize the church for mission around the world. In 30-plus years of ministry, Jill and Bill have trained countless teams and leaders in normalizing the supernatural within disciple-making. Most important of those teams is their own family. We get to hear their stories of how joining Jesus through prayer and healings has shaped their kids and grandkids.

In the final week of this series on the Missionary Pathway, Cory and Brian discuss multiplication. While we certainly desire a multiplication of microchurches, that is not all we mean by this word. We want to see multiplication at every level: Prayer and fasting, Incarnational living, gospel planting, disciples made and more. Our hope is that by following in the rhythms and the ways of Jesus, multiplication will be a natural overflow.
In week four of this series on the Missionary Pathway, Cory and Brian discuss how microchurches emerge out of new disciple-making. This is phase four of the missionary pathway. As new disciples are made out of the harvest, new forms of the church are required. We discuss the definition the KC Underground holds for "church" and the rhythms of these extended spiritual families.

In this episode, Cory and Brian interview Seth Bouchelle about long-term soul care and the need for spiritual formation within disciple-making movements. Discovery Groups are incredible for catalyzing movements. Discovery Bible Studies are great for setting a culture of obedience in disciple-making. What we see is a need for tools beyond discovery groups in order to "fill in the gaps" of every context. We have to lean into practices that keep us deeply rooted amidst a lifestyle that is not.

Cory, Brian, and Breanna Wiebe, on-going coaching director of the KC Underground talk through the idea of covocational. When we think about how the church is led and developed, we often think of a person or team of paid professionals who do the work of ministry. The truth is, many church leaders in the west are bi-vocational at best. Nonetheless, the goal remains to have a "full-time-paid-role" with the church. This often creates a separate class of paid professionals that inhibits the people of God from being equipped for ministry.
Covocational is about choosing to work multiple roles (preferably in line with calling) for the sake of financial creativity and liberation in order to equip the people of God for a decentralized disciple-making movement.

The purpose of discussing this idea is because when we talk about DMM in the West, we primarily think of "faster, bigger, greater." Hugh Halter (Episode #15)
Cory and Brian interview Hugh Halter. Hugh & Cheryl Halter began their ministry starting things from scratch in Portland, Oregon. Hugh and Cheryl have done it all from church planting to house painting to starting hockey teams for children with disabilities. Hugh has been one of the primary influencers for the Underground in learning about incarnational living and gospel planting. Currently, Hugh and Cheryl are in Alton, IL where they moved without knowing what they would do, but knew they wanted to bring good news to a small, struggling town. Within a year, they were given a 12,000 square foot federal post office, and with the help of his family turned it into “Post Commons” which the locals call the “living room for Alton.”
Under Hugh’s non-profit “Lantern Network” Hugh facilitates a coffee house, brunch kitchen, events center, whiskey society, and co-working space to birth and nurture small ventures that make a collectively large ripple.
Hugh says his mission is to encourage the church to be less churchy and instead work on creating social, personal, & spiritual ventures that serve our cities in ways that make God smile.

In this episode of the Underground Podcast, Brian and Cory interview Sam Metcalf, the president of Novo. Sam and Patty Metcalf were one of four families that founded Novo in 1980, and he has served as president since 1985. He holds an undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree from the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary, and a doctorate from the Fuller School of Theology. He also is an adjunct professor of Missional Practice in the SIS at Fuller. Sam also coordinates CoNext, the global partnership of Novo-like mission entities in a dozen nations that share mutual mission, vision, and values, all led by national leadership. Sam is ordained in the Evangelical Free Church of America. His book, Beyond the Local Church: How Apostolic Movements Can Change the World (InterVarsity Press) is a clarion affirmation to those called to ministry beyond the boundaries of local churches and a validation of the structures necessary for these apostolic leaders to thrive. He’s authored an array of other booklets and articles (available online through Novo). Patty is equally involved in ministry with a particular focus on healing prayer and intercession. Sam and Patty live in Southern California and have a son and daughter, both married, and five grandchildren.
While Sam will talk about the paradigm and idea of leading with prayer, you’ll be encouraged with some practices as well. Find the One to Reach the Many
Cory and Brian interview Phil Alessi about the idea of having a mindset for movement. Phil unexpectedly launched a movement within a prison in Indiana through his meetings with just one inmate, Donnie, and now can chronicle about 3,200 new disciples who have come to Christ through this movement in three years. The story of what’s happened in Indiana has inspired many others to launch similar ministries and refined strategies for leaders who already had ministries going in prisons. This is one of the key ways the gospel movement in Indiana has gained momentum—not just through the prisoners themselves, but through the multiplication of new ministries all over the world. The gospel movement in Indiana has become a “learning laboratory” for movement, and leaders working to launch movements in all kinds of contexts (not only prisons) have been able to glean valuable strategies and encouragement from it. Phil explains. “That’s really the point of it. That’s how a gospel movement works. You can’t control it, you can’t keep your hands on it. You have to give it away, letting someone else be greater than you. That’s what’s happening in this movement. Phil found one. The rest is history—and a very different future for thousands of people. Phil Alessi and his wife Ruthann have been with CRM since 2002 and currently serve on the Advance Team (previously Accelerate) in Northwest Indiana. They have discipled people of peace who have ignited gospel movements in area jails and prisons. Their vision is to mentor and multiply the leaders of Disciple Making Movements.

Cory and Brian interview Chris Galanos and learn about a network aiming at movement in Lubbock, TX.
An interview with Joe Reed, the founder of Exponent Group. Joe has had experience in “macro” and “micro” church planting. After several years exploring missional communities in the context of Pretoria, South Africa, Joe and his family moved back to the states to begin a new work in Boston. Joe also leads Accelerate, a network that serves as a platform for those who are sharing resources and learnings from across different regions and affinities.
Brian and Cory explore the idea of disciple-making movements. What does that phrase even mean? How do you know you have one? What leads to a movement?
We’ve overused another word in the Christian world. We’ve become obsessed with the idea of movement, and we might be using the word to describe something we want to be a part of rather than something that is actually happening. Instead of over-selling our work, we’ll explore other language that can help us make incremental steps in order to see movement as the fruit of a long-term work.
