Whether or not UFA forward Tomas Tatar signs with the Pittsburgh Penguins after having confirmed discussions with the team
Is Erik Karlsson’s injury history concerning as he enters his first season with the team?
If one chain restaurant could be added to your area, what would it be?

After a monster trade that brought Erik Karlsson to the Pittsburgh Penguins, we have a jam-packed mailbag edition of the Penscast. This week, Robbie, Snail, and Garrett take questions on several different topics, including:
What the team might do personnel-wise now that Jake Guentzel will be out until at least the end of October
Crazy hockey player superstitions
Whether or not it’s the right move for Kyle Dubas to handle GM duties
What player would you rather have between Karlsson or Jakob Chychrun

It’s been 24 hours (at the time of writing this), and ERIK KARLSSON IS A PITTSBURGH PENGUIN. The player Kyle Dubas sought since departing Toronto and arriving in Pittsburgh is finally on his roster, and in one fell swoop, Dubas acquired the reigning Norris Trophy winner while simultaneously doing away with just about every Ron Hextall-era mistake. Garrett and Snail turn on the microphones and provide their reaction to this blockbuster deal. Where will Karlsson be slotted? Will he quarterback the power play? Can Karlsson improve the Pittsburgh Penguins in Jake Guentzel’s absence? How does the trade affect Kris Letang and his ice time? All these questions and more are discussed on this week’s show!

We are into August now, and all seems quiet on the western (Pennsylvania) front. While we patiently wait to see what, if anything, Kyle Dubas and co. have up their sleeves, the Penscast Mailbag is back this week to beat the heat and the dog days of the off-season. This week, the three hosts take 11 questions.
What trade do you believe was the best in Pittsburgh Penguins' history?
Which player has more upside: P.O Joseph or Ty Smith?
Would you like to see the Penguins go back to their original blue sweaters?
Is Drew O’Connor the hero the team needs, giving the team a second chance to buy out Mikael Granlund?
Our zany food discussions continue this week. What’s on your Mount Rushmore of ice cream flavors?

What are some of the top reasons to visit Pittsburgh outside of the Pittsburgh Penguins?
Which five teams across the NHL would be on your no-trade list?
How would you spend your day with the Stanley Cup?
We delve into some baseball and talk about the Pittsburgh Pirates drafting pitcher Paul Skenes as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.
And all three hosts have a spirited, hilarious, perhaps stomach-churning discussion on the benefits and uses of ketchup!

The arbitration process and qualifying offers to restricted free agents
How much of a factor age is when discussing the Pittsburgh Penguins’ chances at winning another Stanley Cup
Robbie puts together an “all-star” lineup of Penguins greats
We talk about Erik Karlsson again
And finally, we round out the show with a spirited discussion on appetizers and the recent influx of vegan-friendly food items at restaurants

A few weeks ago, I typed on this website that we had broken a mailbag record with the number of questions we had, with 28 queries. Fast forward to now, and that record has been eclipsed yet again with 31 tweets sent to the Skating Penguin Network Twitter account. Clocking in at just under 90 minutes, it’s one of the longest recordings we have ever done. But that’s not all the history we’re making. For the first time, we have recruited a new voice to the Skating Penguin Network. Frequent mailbag contributor, Snail, has come aboard the crew and will be providing his voice and opinions to all sorts of future content alongside Robbie and Garrett. This week, the hosts are asked about:
Our thoughts on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2023 draft class
The early days of free agency and how effective Kyle Dubas’ first moves may be
The likelihood of an Erik Karlsson trade to Pittsburgh
Whether or not it was the right decision to re-sign Tristan Jarry to a long-term contract
The massive menu at the Cheesecake Factory
All these topics and more are discussed on this week’s show!

Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins made their presence known Wednesday night in Nashville. Earlier in the day, Dubas orchestrated his first trade as President of Hockey Operations by acquiring Vegas Golden Knights forward Reilly Smith for a 2024 third-round pick, an opening salvo to what is likely going to be a busy summer for the Dubas administration. Reports indicate that the team is looking to shed the salary of veteran defenseman Jeff Petry, who was only acquired last off-season. And all this was before Connor Bedard even donned his Chicago Blackhawks sweater as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 Draft. With the 14th pick in the draft, Dubas and the Penguins selected Brayden Yager, a forward who already vastly improves a shallow prospect pool. Robbie and Garrett are here with an instant analysis of the Smith trade, the team’s newest prospect, and a few mailbag questions.

Another extra large Penscast Mailbag is on tap this week, ladies and gents. Twenty-one questions round out the mailbag, and we have a variety of questions and question-askers, with longtime staples such as Brian and a few new faces thrown in. This week, Robbie and Garrett are asked about:
The possibility of other teams trying to shed players’ contracts that Kyle may want to inherit
With the NHL Draft this week, we take one last look at who the Pittsburgh Penguins could take at pick No. 14
Could Philadelphia’s Carter Hart become a Pittsburgh Penguin?
The 2023 Hockey Hall of Fame class, including the likes of Henrik Lundqvist and Tom Barrasso
Which player has more trade value: P.O Joseph or Ty Smith?

This week, we have 17 questions in the Penscast Mailbag, all provided by loyal listener Brian. In this week’s show, Robbie and Garrett are asked about:
A hypothetical acquisition of defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson after his buyout from the Vancouver Canucks
Another look at Jason Zucker’s next contract and the probability he has of returning to the Pittsburgh Penguins
Whether or not Arizona’s Karel Vejmelka would be a nice complement to Tristan Jarry
Why Pierre Engvall might be one of the better depth players to go after in free agency
And the weekly Penscast food question centers around chicken wings! Are you a fan of drums, flats, or both? Or, as Garrett explains, do you prefer boneless chicken tenders? Which sauces best complement the chicken in this case?

Folks, this is the most significant mailbag episode Robbie and Garrett have ever hosted. Every few months, one utters on the podcast, ‘This has to be a new record for questions!’ Well, this episode may not be topped. Twenty-seven questions create this week’s monstrous show, with questions from regulars like Brian, Brenden, and Snail, as well as a few new faces. We are answering questions about:
Why John Gibson may not be the best goaltender for the Pittsburgh Penguins
Drew O’Connor’s play and whether or not he’s earned himself a promotion into the top-six
The possibility of acquiring forward Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators
Which unrestricted free agents, if any, are likely to return
Our weekly food question, courtesy of Brian. This week, we’re discussing the best types of bread!

We were going to spend the bulk of the first segment talking about what the Pittsburgh Penguins have looked like since our last episode, but now we’ll shift focus to a much more serious topic—Kris Letang’s second stroke since 2014.Props to Letang for reporting his symptoms and knowing his body well enough to not push it past its limit. With Letang out indefinitely, how does that change the defense? Does Brian Dumoulin go back on the top pair? Will P.O Joseph get elevated ice time? Is an appearance from Ty Smith possible down the line? Does this absence put more pressure on the offense to score more goals because of Letang’s presence on the top pair?We don’t have answers to all of these questions, and perhaps some of these will go unanswered, but Letang’s absence will affect the way this team plays one way or another.Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening!Don’t forget to support us by rating and subscribing to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play.Make sure also to follow us on Twitter all season long to get updated every time a new episode drops: @PensburghPod***Intro/Outro music courtesy of Sylendanna.Track title - Online Now! & I Think Its The Way I WalkLearn more about your ad choices. The Pittsburgh Penguins remain an underwhelming hockey team. Pittsburgh is 2-6-2 in their last 10 games played, losers of two straight at the time of recording, and the entire vibe of this team feels off. For the last month or so, Robbie and Garrett have taken rather negative tones towards the Penguins, their on-ice results, lack of effective depth, shoddy goaltending, and more. This week, while the conversation is still mired with negativity due to recent performances, the hosts ask each other: What is this team’s real identity? Have we already seen it? How hot is the stove before you realize you’ve burnt your hand? Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening! While the Pittsburgh Penguins’ bottom six remains a definite work in progress, it appears Mike Sullivan listens to this very podcast, as he has made some long-awaited changes to his defensive pairings. Marcus Pettersson has been promoted to the top pair, P.O Joseph has moved into the top four alongside Jeff Petry, and Brian Dumoulin was demoted to the third pair to play with Jan Rutta. A 60-minute hockey game against a Washington Capitals team that effectively iced an ECHL lineup due to injuries in their own right is not enough to draw any concrete conclusions, however... the Penguins finally snapped their seven-game losing streak Wednesday night, winning 4-1. This week’s podcast sees Robbie and Garrett give their impressions on the win that stopped the skid, plus a massive 12-question mailbag that sees them touch on a variety of topics, from Mario Lemieux’s number being retired league-wide to a conversation about blink-182. These Pittsburgh Penguins are in something of a tailspin. Losers of six straight games after such a hot start make that start feeling like a distant memory. Many others in the online portion of the fanbase may be overreacting to an October-November slump, but history shows if you’re out of the playoff picture by American Thanksgiving, your chances of getting into a playoff spot in the second half of the season are very slim. Multiple-goal leads have been blown, and simply put, not enough goals have been scored. Questions persist about several players, from Brian Dumoulin to unimpressive forwards in the bottom six. Are we all pressing the panic button too early? Or are there actual concerns that could linger well into the winter months? We conclude the podcast with a six-question mailbag with many listeners also voicing their concerns with the direction of the team and the lackluster performances of several veteran cogs. The Pittsburgh Penguins sit at 4-2-1, still a very respectable record to begin the season. All their losses have come in Canada (Montreal, Edmonton, and most recently, Calgary). While the Canada thing is just a coincidence, the level of opposition has been challenging—the Oilers and Flames are no slouches given their offensive talent. Robbie and Garrett return this week to address their concerns with the Penguins’ current injury situation and scoring depth (or lack thereof). The Penguins have been marred early on by sluggish starts or lousy stretches of play during games. Are these warning signs magnified by shoddier depth players who are offensively inconsistent? Or are other, larger factors at play? We also have a nine-question mailbag touching on Halloween warmup jerseys, Kasperi Kapanen’s impressive start, Brian Dumoulin’s worrying decline, and much more. Well, folks, we can finally talk about real, meaningful hockey games. And that’s exactly what we’re doing on this week’s PensBurgh Podcast. As of this recording, the Penguins have played three games, own a 2-0-1 record, and have looked very strong out of the gate. But it’s important to not jump to too many conclusions through such a small sample size. Both Sidney Crosby (two goals, six points in three games played) and Evgeni Malkin (three goals, four points in six games played) have looked like their usual, healthy, dominant selves. On the defensive side of the puck, Jeff Petry’s mobility and penchant for putting the puck on the net have been evident through three contests. How well can this defensive unit perform, assuming everyone on the blue line stays relatively healthy? Robbie and Garrett close out this week’s show with a fun discussion about the return of the “Robo Penguin,” with the announcement of the new Reverse Retro jerseys across the NHL. Regular-season hockey is back, baby. The Pittsburgh Penguins began the 2022-23 campaign last night against the Arizona Coyotes. This week’s episode of the PensBurgh Podcast was recorded before the puck was dropped, but some timely nuggets of information are still sprinkled into the show. Robbie and Garrett previewed the Arizona game and looked ahead to the Penguins’ next matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The two hosts also talked about Teddy Blueger’s lingering upper-body injury which, in turn, forced Ryan Poehling into the fourth-line center role. P.O Joseph earned the open spot on the third defense pairing alongside Jan Rutta. How long is Joseph’s leash in what is, presumably, a make-it-or-break-it scenario? Ty Smith looked very promising in training camp. Whether it be through injury or subpar play, when could we see Smith back in Pittsburgh? Elliotte Friedman is reporting via his 32 Thoughts outlets that trade talks have cooled on Marcus Pettersson and the Vancouver Canucks. With Ty Smith waiting in the wings, how likely is it that Pettersson actually gets traded, assuming Joseph plays well enough to keep his job? The Pittsburgh Penguins will begin their quest for a sixth Stanley Cup in six days when the Arizona Coyotes come to Pittsburgh to start the 2022-23 season. We here at PensBurgh are shaking off the rust, too, and the PensBurgh Podcast is back for another season of auditory analysis. In this season preview episode, Robbie and Garrett have something of a surface-level discussion about the Pittsburgh Penguins, their championship prospects, and more. How well will the Penguins’ “Big Three,” Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, operate with all three players being another year older? Malkin is 36. Letang and Crosby are 35, certainly no spring chickens here. Are there dark-horse candidates that may surprise some Penguins fans after a disappointing 2021-22 season? How well will Jason Zucker or Kasperi Kapanen perform? For the team to win another championship, they will need regular contributions from these players. On the defensive side, there is still a bit of a logjam. What does the future hold for 23-year-old P.O Joseph, the supposed jewel of the Phil Kessel trade? Has he already played his last game in a black and gold sweater? Finally, we close out the show with a quick, two-question mailbag, chronicling the likes of Kris Letang and speculating on the future of Sam Poulin. Since the last PensBurgh Podcast episode hit your ears, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ offseason saga has been entertaining, to say the least. Given the developments of recent days, Garrett and Robbie are reconvening for a special offseason edition of the show. This week on the show, we are talking about the significant contract extensions. The band is back together for one final ride. Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Sidney Crosby will, in all likelihood, end their careers together in the black-and-gold. The 2022 free agency period has officially opened, and the Penguins were rather active on day one, with more moves reportedly on the way. Robbie and Garrett sit down to talk about the recent transactions, and whether or not these players will be solid additions to Pittsburgh’s organization. And finally, the Penguins recently selected defenseman, Owen Pickering, with their first-round draft choice, which has been a rarity in the Crosby-Malkin era. The two hosts touch on the Penguins’ 2022 draft class and discuss which players might have a shot of contributing to the next generation of Penguins hockey. This is it, folks. The final PensBurgh Podcast of the 2021-22 season. Robbie and Garrett sit down to share their thoughts on the conclusion of the first-round series against the New York Rangers. In addition, they also look toward the future. Both hosts discuss the impending free agents, how likely it is some return, and whether or not some new faces (or old friends) could be added. A discussion is also had on the futures of some front office members. How safe are Ron Hextall and Brian Burke’s positions with the recent Fenway Sports Group takeover? This week, the mailbag features six questions, ranging from potential Evgeni Malkin/Kris Letang replacements to us ranking the impending free agents, and much more. Oh, how the tables can turn. This week, Robbie and Garrett return to give their thoughts on the Pittsburgh Penguins through Game 5 of their first-round series against the New York Rangers. And, of course, the biggest topic on everyone’s mind is the health and status of captain, Sidney Crosby. Robbie and Garrett analyze the real possibility of Crosby missing action, and whether or not the Penguins can overcome his absence, at least through the end of this series. The mailbag this week houses six questions. We’re talking about Jason Zucker’s impact since his return, the rise, fall, and rise again of Kasperi Kapanen and the potential for a rebuild heading into next season. The 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs are finally here. The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers definitely got that message. Tuesday night’s triple overtime classic featured so many twists and turns, it’s useless to list them all here. Igor Sheshterkin making 79 saves, Casey DeSmith leaving the game during sudden-death play, Louis Domingue’s improbable journey to hero, and so much more. This week’s mailbag is absolutely massive, featuring 11 questions ranging from the now-infamous spicy pork and broccoli, to Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin’s futures, and potential dark horse players who could make an impact throughout this playoff run. Who are the real Pittsburgh Penguins? Are they the team that shut out a playoff-bound Boston Bruins side and trounced the lowly Detroit Red Wings? Or are they the team that looked uninspired and slow against their fiercest rival in the Philadelphia Flyers and the rising Edmonton Oilers? Is there a happy medium somewhere to be found here? The Penguins are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games played, not a statistic that fills you with optimism with the playoffs just a week away. In your estimation, are the Penguins gassed and heading towards another first-round disappointment? Or are they conserving energy for when the games “actually matter”? This week’s mailbag is loaded with six great questions. Is Sidney Crosby the top all-around player in league history? What direction will the Penguins take if they suffer defeat in round one? What are the best tourist spots in Pittsburgh? Tune in to find out these answers. Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening! This week, we’re talking about the real possibility of Casey DeSmith playing as the Pittsburgh Penguins’ number one netminder come the first week of May when the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin. Tristan Jarry’s status is undetermined at the time of recording, with Mike Sullivan labeling Jarry as ‘week-to-week’ with an apparent foot injury. If Jarry isn’t able to suit up for Game 1, how much confidence do you have in DeSmith’s game, given his up-and-down season, to steer the ship between the pipes during the most crucial time of the season? This week’s mailbag also sees the two hosts reflect on the star-studded 2003 NHL Draft class, discuss strange playoff rituals, highlight Amanda Kessel’s recent hiring, and much more. This week, we’re talking about the declining play of Brian Dumoulin. Typically a reliable, stay-at-home yin to Kris Letang’s offensive, risk-taking yang, the shutdown defenseman has been in a very noticeable rut. The 30-year-old seems to have lost some of his mobility while making some questionable decisions in his own zone. Could this be a case of Dumoulin playing through some sort of nagging injury, or is it time to seriously consider benching the veteran and/or explore trade opportunities in the off-season? It seems even Mike Sullivan, who is very dependent on his veteran players, has taken notice of this, and moved Dumoulin to the second pairing during the last game against the Islanders, with Mike Matheson taking the top spot alongside Letang. Is the decline of Dumoulin real? Meanwhile, the mailbag this week sees the two hosts take questions on playoff-clinching scenarios, some potential new faces next season, and much more. This week, the PensBurgh Podcast is ready to break the emergency glass and start panicking. Or are they? Yes, it’s true the Pittsburgh Penguins have come up short in recent weeks against the likes of the Colorado Avalanche, and their probable first-round opponents, the New York Rangers. But even if they’re not getting the two points in the standings, does that mean Pittsburgh is doomed when the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin a month from now? Robbie and Garrett are back this week to try and get some Penguins fans away from the ledge. The game plan is there to set the team up for success during the playoffs. Will the Penguins have enough depth to compete with their opponent? And how well can the Penguins execute and “play the right way,” as Mike Sullivan always says? The mailbag is a brief one this week, with both hosts talking about post-trade deadline acquisitions, an eventual Kris Letang replacement, and the bad injury luck the Penguins have had in recent years. It’s a simple question, even if the discussion is a bit premature at the moment. This week on the podcast, Garrett and Robbie are talking about the newest Pittsburgh Penguins player, Rickard Rakell, and whether or not it would be a wise move to re-sign the winger to a long-term contract. Rakell is one year younger than Bryan Rust, a winger whose contract is also expiring at season’s end. With news that the NHL salary cap will increase by $1 million next season, combined with the possible shedding of a few other contracts on the roster via a trade or buyout, the conversation will be had to see if the Penguins can extend Rakell while also trying to sign franchise stalwarts in Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. The mailbag sees us discuss the ever-growing possibility of a first-round matchup with the New York Rangers, Tristan Jarry’s Vezina Trophy consideration, plus much more. This week, we’re talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins and the 2022 NHL trade deadline. Robbie and Garrett discuss whether or not the Penguins “won” their deadline day with the acquisition of forward Rickard Rakell. Also of note was that GM Ron Hextall was able to keep all of his top prospects and his 2022 first-round draft pick. We’re handing out grades to Hextall and co. for their efforts. The mailbag this week is supersized, with seven questions ranging from a hypothetical trade of Marcus Pettersson, to Bryan Rust’s surprising penalty-killing responsibilities, and much more. Mike Sullivan is finally experimenting with different line combinations and defensive pairings. Mike Matheson with Kris Letang. Evan Rodrigues was on the top line. Bryan Rust was on the right side of Evgeni Malkin. Mark Friedman has become an unexpected surprise. With all this experimentation, Robbie and Garrett are back this week to discuss which move could be the most beneficial for the Pittsburgh Penguins and their long-term/playoff outlook. Note: As you’ll hear at the beginning of this episode, apologies in advance for the short runtime of this week’s show. Due to unforeseen technical errors through Skype, Garrett lost the original, 40-minute recording of this week’s episode, but we fully intend to be back in the saddle for next week. Rumors continue to swirl regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Vancouver Canucks being trade partners ahead of the March 21 trading deadline. New reports suggest Evan Rodrigues and John Marino could be included in a package to acquire 25-year-old forward, Brock Boeser. Given these persistent rumors, the Jim Rutherford/Patrick Allvin connection, and the fact that we’re just about 10 days out from the deadline itself, Robbie and Garrett are here this week to discuss this new rumor, and analyze the pros and cons to such a transaction. In addition, this week we may have a record for the largest mailbag in PensBurgh Podcast history. A whopping 11 questions sees the two hosts talk about more trade rumors, famous Ukrainian NHLers, Jared McCann’s incredible season for the Seattle Kraken, and much, much more. This week’s PensBurgh Podcast previews what is, perhaps, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ toughest stretch of games all season. Between March 3 and March 17, Pittsburgh will do battle against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Florida Panthers, the St. Louis Blues, the Vegas Golden Knights, the Nashville Predators, and will play their divisional rivals, the Carolina Hurricanes, twice. Mike Sullivan recently stopped short of calling this slate of games a ‘measuring stick’ for his club. But Robbie and Garrett are here to talk about the tough road ahead, and figure out what realistic expectations should be for the Penguins. Meanwhile, the mailbag this week features six questions, running the gamut from Kasperi Kapanen’s slump, to trade rumors featuring Vancouver Canucks star, Brock Boeser, plus much more. Is it panic button time? Are these Penguins pretenders? Do they just beat the “bad teams”? Our own Gretz wrote about this very topic earlier in the week and it got me thinking. The Athletic’s Josh Yohe outlined the rest of the schedule for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and it’s not pretty, to say the least. We will learn a lot about this group over the next month or so. To their credit, the Penguins do have some impressive, resilient victories this season over the likes of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vegas Golden Knights just to name a few. So, is this team for real, for nothing, or somewhere in between? The mailbag also sees us tackle questions regarding trade deadline chatter, the development of American hockey prospects, and whether or not the NHL should officially sponsor or endorse a professional women’s league. This week on the PensBurgh Podcast, we’re talking about the big man, Brian Boyle. Brian Boyle has proved quite a few naysayers wrong this year. While his stats aren’t eye-popping at 37 years old, he has become a fairly integral component to the bottom-six, especially now that Teddy Blueger is injured. Assuming everyone is healthy come playoff time (and that’s a big if), would you continue to deploy Boyle as that “role player” or “veteran glue guy” a la Matt Cullen? The kind of player old-timey veterans say you need to win championships? Or would you simply role with best players available and keep Boyle in the reserves? The mailbag is jam-packed this week with seven great questions ranging from Sidney Crosby’s statue goal, to Crosby’s best-ever linemates, and wondering what kind a return the Pittsburgh Penguins would get if they were to trade Kasperi Kapanen or Jason Zucker. This week on the PensBurgh Podcast, Robbie and I are recapping the lone contest against the Boston Bruins, admiring Sidney Crosby’s greatness, and answering a few mailbag questions. As Sidney Crosby nears career goal #500, we thought it was only right to look back at some of our favorite regular season goals from #87. The mailbag this week sees us talk about the hardest shot contest between some legendary shooters, what has led to Tristan Jarry’s All-Star campaign, and we also address the recent admission from Marc Methot regarding the incident with Sidney Crosby and Methot’s injured hand. Kasperi Kapanen continues to draw the ire of Penguins fans, and potentially even more so, his coaching staff. His poor play and lack of consistency have been on display since the season’s start. Nine goals and 24 points in 45 games isn’t terrible, but many are expecting more, especially in the goals department. Mike Sullivan may be sending a message to Kapanen and perhaps even GM Ron Hextall through Kapanen’s deployment during his last six games. Going back to the January 23 game against the Winnipeg Jets, Kapanen’s TOI has fallen from 18:07 to 15:56 to 13:31 to 11:01 to a season low 8:03 on January 30. Now, Kapanen did see more ice time against the Capitals, but he will be remembered for his terrible offensive zone gaffe in overtime that led to the Capitals regaining possession and eventually tallying the winning score. My question to you is simple: coming out of the All-Star Break, what would you do with Kasperi Kapanen? Trade him? Demote him? Hope he finds his groove? The mailbag is brief this week, but Robbie and I are analyzing Kris Letang’s play and how that coincides with Evgeni Malkin’s recent return to the lineup. We have quite a bit of news to discuss on this week’s episode of the PensBurgh Podcast. In negative news, the Pittsburgh Penguins continue to anger the Hockey Gods, as the team has lost another player to injury. Jason Zucker will be out for an undetermined amount of time to recover from core muscle surgery. Robbie and I throw our guesses into the ring to see who should slot alongside Evgeni Malkin for the foreseeable future. Will it be Danton Heinen? Evan Rodrigues? Jeff Carter? And speaking of Jeff Carter, the longtime Los Angeles King has just signed a brand new contract extension that will keep him in the Steel City through the 2023-24 season. With an average annual value of $3.125M, Robbie and I also discuss the pros and cons of the extension, and what this news means for the futures of players like Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Bryan Rust—all players whose contracts expire at season’s end. This week’s mailbag also sees us discuss the departure of Patrick Allvin to the Vancouver Canucks, a make-your-own-uniform debate, the future of the NHL in Europe, plus much more. We recap the Penguins’ games against LAK (6-2 L), SJ (2-1 OTW), VGK (5-3 W) This week, Robbie and I are focusing specifically on Jason Zucker. The forward has recently returned after missing seven games, and was credited with two goals in his return game against the Vegas Golden Knights. I think it’s safe to say the Zucker experiment hasn’t worked out for the Pittsburgh Penguins. 43 points in 84 games played for your second line left wing alongside Evgeni Malkin isn’t great. Factor in his recent injury history, and the on-ice results have been shaky at best. But let’s get a little crazy here. Being that this isn’t even the regime that acquired Zucker, would you entertain a trade (if any such discussions came up) by the trade deadline? Or would you rather keep him for depth purposes through this season and potentially re-evaluate his short and long-term future in the off-season? The mailbag also has us flexing our salary cap muscles, and figuring out what would be deemed a “successful” season for this Penguins team. *Note: this week’s episode/discussion was recorded prior/during the announcement of Zucker landing on injured reserve. This week’s PensBurgh Podcast focuses on the one thing that can (and often times will) win you a championship: depth. As the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 10-game win streak recently came to an end and Evgeni Malkin made his triumphant season debut, Robbie and Garrett sat down to discuss the depth of this Penguins team, and if this team’s contributions are akin to the championship-winning squads of 2016 and 2017. The listener mailbag is loaded this week with six questions ranging from potential trade targets, to hypotheticals about Jonathan Toews, and much more. It’s the first PensBurgh Podcast of 2022. The COVID surges have cooled (for now), and the Pittsburgh Penguins are back to playing hockey. We have a few game recaps on tap, as the Penguins have extended their win streak to nine straight games at the time of this writing. And they have gone on this great run without the services of one, Evgeni Malkin. This week, Robbie and I are here to talk about the return of the 35-year-old centerman, and how his return to this Penguins team will impact the club as they look to gear up for another Stanley Cup run. In addition to the Malkin talk, the mailbag returns this week with some questions about trade acquisitions, Malkin’s contract extension, and the defense pairings heading into next season. ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a player was stirring, not even a ... I can’t think of anything Penguins related to finish the rhyme. Anyway, the PensBurgh Podcast is back this week, delivered to you on Christmas Eve. You can listen to Robbie and I as we share our thoughts on the latest Pittsburgh Penguins news. Surely, that has to be more entertaining than listening to your relatives at the dinner table who you share nothing in common with. This week: We recap the Penguins’ games against the Buffalo Sabres (3-2 SOW), and the New Jersey Devils (3-2 W). Plus, Robbie and I address the Covid-19 surges that have paused the NHL season through Christmas Day. Also, the NHL and NHLPA have jointly announced that NHL players will not participate in the 2022 Olympics. We wonder if the stoppage and Olympic withdrawal is a positive or negative from both a player’s perspective and the league’s perspective? The mailbag is back this week with a few fun hypotheticals for us to explore as well. Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening! An early Christmas gift has hit your stockings. In this week’s edition of the PensBurgh Podcast, Robbie and Garrett: Recap the Pittsburgh Penguins’ games against the Seattle Kraken (6-1 W), the Washington Capitals (4-2 W), the Anaheim Ducks (1-0 W), and the Montreal Canadiens (5-2 W). And since our last episode, the Penguins have really turned their play around. They sit at 15-8-5, going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games played, and are winners of five straight. Even with the absences of Bryan Rust, Evgeni Malkin, and more recently, Jake Guentzel, the Penguins are scoring goals when they need to. What has led to this retransformation from soon-to-be division basement dwellers, to one of the premier teams in the east? Is it Sidney Crosby’s leadership and him getting into gear? Depth contributions from players like Evan Rodrigues and Danton Heinen? Solid goaltending from Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith? All of the above? Tune in to find the answer. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. The PensBurgh Podcast returns to your podcast libraries this week, and not a moment too soon. This week, Robbie and I are discussing two main talking points: the first being the massive slump the Pittsburgh Penguins have experienced in their last 10 games. Pittsburgh is 2-6-2 in their last 10 (before the latest game against the Montreal Canadiens went final), with the team experiencing a ton of lineup shuffling. As we head towards the holiday season, Robbie and I wonder if this is what the Penguins are this season, and if we should look ahead to the 2022-23 season instead. Additionally, we discuss and break down the potential sale of the Penguins to the Fenway Sports Group. Is this a good thing? A bad thing? How does this impact the final years of the Crosby/Malkin era? And, as always, we’re rounding out the show with the weekly mailbag thanks to the listeners who sent us questions on Twitter. In the span of seven days, since the last PensBurgh Podcast episode, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been involved with quite a few headlines—almost none of which have to do with the game of hockey itself. Sidney Crosby made his long-awaited, triumphant return to the Penguins lineup... only to play one game and be forced out due to a positive COVID-19 test. Head coach Mike Sullivan has also entered the NHL’s Covid protocol. All the while, the Penguins are still playing games and chugging along with their season. This week, Robbie and I recap the last few Penguins games and we also address this surge of Covid cases inside the Penguins’ locker room. How can the team sustain continued success with so much lineup shuffling? We’re also answering your mailbag questions (even if they are a week old)! It’s true, it’s damn true: the PensBurgh Podcast guest chair is filled once again. Brett Detar, lead singer of Pittsburgh’s own The Juliana Theory, joins the podcast to discuss a wide array of topics. This week, Brett, Garrett, and Robbie sat down to discuss the Pittsburgh Penguins’ recent games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brett also took the time to answer some of our questions. We touched on things such as his introduction to the Penguins when he was a youngster, growing up and playing hockey with his buddies in his hometown, plus Brett gave his thoughts on the Penguins’ disappointing playoff run of 2020-21. Brett also shared a Mario Lemieux story that many diehard Penguins fans may be familiar with, but he has his own wrinkle to add to this legendary tale. Now we’re cooking with gas. After the pomp and ceremony of the first game of the season against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Pittsburgh Penguins have since played three more contests since last week’s podcast. Time to jump to conclusions! Currently, Pittsburgh sits at a 2-0-2 record, grabbing six out of possible eight points without the services of both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Had you told me that before the season started, I’m not sure I would have believed you. But one of the driving forces behind the Penguins’ solid start? Goaltender Tristan Jarry. Jarry owns a 2-0-1 record, a .935 save percentage, and 1.62 goals against average. Robbie and I go on to discuss Jarry’s impressive start and whether or not he can keep this kind of play up when it matters most. The mailbag is loaded with six questions. We’re answering your questions about trades involving injured players, Lange-isms, and much more! Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening! The Pittsburgh Penguins kicked off their 2021-22 campaign with a resounding victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning. While missing key offensive cogs such as Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, and Evgeni Malkin, Mike Sullivan and his band of flightless birds played a thorough and systematic game to down their opponents. A 6-2 win in game one of 82 is a good start, but it is important to take everything one step at a time. Don’t plan the parade route just yet. On this week’s PensBurgh Podcast, Robbie and I take a look at the Penguins’ season opener, the players who surprised us, and hypothesize if the team can play this style of hockey over a longer period of time, with or without Crosby and Malkin. The listener mailbag sees us answer questions regarding Brian Boyle’s future as a Penguin, ESPN’s first hockey broadcast since 2004, plus much more. The preseason is almost over. Huzzah. With that said, the Pittsburgh Penguins are inching closer to finalizing their roster ahead of Game #1 the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 12. This week’s PensBurgh Podcast sees Robbie and I recap the last three preseason contests. In addition to the game recaps, we’re both looking at which players have risen and fallen based on their preseason performances. Danton Heinen and Kasperi Kapanen have looked like world-beaters, while players like Nathan Legare, Samuel Poulin, and Brock McGinn haven’t really flashed their best attributes. While no lineups have been finalized as of this podcast, both Robbie and I give our thoughts on some fringe players that may have done enough to earn a permanent roster spot come opening night. The listener mailbag closes out the show with a very interesting trade offer as well as a discussion about LTIR usage and how that could benefit the Penguins during the season.

You’ve made it through another off-season without hockey. And while the Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t capture the Stanley Cup in 2021, the optimism of a new season has dragged you back in to watch your favorite flightless birds. While all of us here at PensBurgh are getting ready to give you that good #content you’ve come to expect, the PensBurgh Podcast is back for all you podcast listeners. Whether you’re a first-time listener, strapping in for a new hockey season, or a longtime listener who participates in the weekly mailbag, before this show gets on the road, I would like to give sincere thanks to anyone who has taken the time to download, listen, comment (positively and negatively!) in regards to this production. Fellow PensBurger, Robbie Naugle and I will be with you all season long to give you our thoughts in audio form.
This week’s show recaps the Penguins’ off-season moves, touches briefly on the prospects that were drafted at the NHL Entry Draft in July, and we give our loose predictions on how we think Pittsburgh’s season will unfold. In addition to all this, the listener mailbag is back to round out the discussion. This week, we’re talking about our favorite binge watches, whether or not this iteration of the Penguins lack speed and skill, and trying to figure out what kind of player Radim Zohorna might be. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ season has come to another abrupt end. Losing to the New York Islanders in six games while largely playing the better hockey over the course of the series is sure to sting for some time. But the team has to move forward. While another season has come and gone with no championship for Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Kris Letang, that doesn't mean it was a complete failure of a campaign, either. As the core gets older by another year, even more questions are going to be asked about the team’s veteran stars. Will Malkin and Letang receive contract extensions or have they played their final games in the black-and-gold colors of Pittsburgh? What will happen with Tristan Jarry after a legendarily bad postseason run? Is Mike Sullivan’s time as head coach up? These are all topics that are sure to be discussed as summer kicks into full gear. And the PensBurgh Podcast is here, for one final time this season, to put a bow on this memorable crusade that was the 2021 Pittsburgh Penguins season. Robbie and I discuss what the Penguins may change before the 2021-22 season, both in terms of player personnel and, perhaps, coaching positions as well. This week’s mailbag is stacked from top to bottom with eleven questions thanks to our loyal Twitter users and listeners. For those who may read this and listen to this podcast, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has taken even a second to download, listen, review, or ask a question for this show. The PensBurgh Podcast has been the project that I am most proud of working on since joining PensBurgh almost five years ago, and the show wouldn't be where it is today if not for the great listeners who enjoy the content Robbie and I put out. I hope I have done my job of both informing and entertaining anyone who listened to the show during this crazy season. The podcast will return later this summer, likely around the time NHL free agency begins. So, for now, thanks for listening, enjoy the podcast, and Let’s Go Pens. Through the first two games of this opening round series, the Pittsburgh Penguins find themselves tied at one game apiece with the New York Islanders. Even though both teams have a game to their name, there are still several areas in need of improvement if the Penguins wish to close this series out on their terms. Whether it’s going a combined 0-5 on the power-play, an inability to finish odd-man rushes, or giving up 79 shots on goal through two games, these Penguins are far from perfect. Robbie and I are here to give our thoughts on Games 1 and 2, as well as try to figure out what the team can do to fix some of these issues. In addition to the main topic, this week’s mailbag doesn't hold anything back, either. We’re answering questions about lifelong NHL bans, Tristan Jarry’s performances, former Penguins players, and much more: Don’t forget to support us by rating and subscribing to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. Are you ready? The Pittsburgh Penguins are gearing up for another run at the Stanley Cup. With the regular season finally complete and the playoffs yet to kick off, the PensBurgh Podcast is here to preview this round one series. Will the New York Islanders spoil the Penguins’ hopes, reminiscent of 2019 postseason? Or will these fully healthy flightless birds advance to the second round for the first time since 2018? Here’s the agenda for this week’s special playoff primer:
We recap the final regular season games against the Buffalo Sabres
The main topic this week: Previewing NYI-PIT. The Penguins went 6-2 against the Islanders in the regular season series. The Penguins also averaged 3.25 goals per game against the Islanders in the regular season series as well. With the Islanders playing, what is best described as a “boring, low-event, 2—1-esque” style of hockey, what can the Penguins do to ensure they come out of this series as the victors?
We also pick Round One X Factors, highlighting one player who will make the biggest difference for the Pens in this series.
To close out the playoff preview, Robbie and I also give our series winner prediction.
And, of course, we can't forget about the mailbag. This week’s mailbag sees Robbie and I look back on the 2021 regular season, wondering what former general manager Jim Rutherford might have done differently, looking ahead to this summer’s expansion draft, and much more:

The Pittsburgh Penguins have clinched a playoff spot for the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs. Huzzah. The PensBurgh Podcast is here to break down all the action from the last few games and assess what these flightless birds look like as they head into battle for Lord Stanley’s mighty chalice. This week’s episode also examines Bryan Rust, and the transformation the 28-year-old Michigander has made, going from complementary NHL depth player to premier goalscorer. How has Rust made such a transition, seemingly overnight? The mailbag segment is locked in loaded this week, with many podcast listeners eager to get their answers regarding the latest Tom Wilson saga. It looks like the Pittsburgh Penguins are rounding into form at just the right time. Head coach Mike Sullivan is pressing all the right buttons and his players are responding by racking up the points in the division standings. With just six games to go now before the playoffs begin, including a two-game series starting tonight against the Washington Capitals that will likely decide the East Division champion, the Penguins could not be in a better spot. Add into the mix an Evgeni Malkin that is set to return from injury, and we may have the final ingredient of the recipe for a team that is ready to go on a deep playoff run. Or will they? This week’s PensBurgh Podcast examines the likelihood that the Penguins will run out of gas when it matters most—during the Stanley Cup playoffs. With games being played at a breakneck pace since February, will the grind of a truncated, 56-game schedule in five months catch up to these Penguins? This week’s mailbag also sees Robbie and I discuss a potential Evgeni Malkin trade, our favorite goals in franchise history, best and worst first-round matchups, and much more. The Pittsburgh Penguins have delivered a bit of a mixed bag over the last seven days. A shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, a regulation loss to the Buffalo Sabres and an almost legendary collapse at the hands of the New Jersey Devils shows that these Penguins are not perfect. However, the team still sits in third place in the East Division with nine games to go before the playoffs begin. And players like Kasperi Kapanen and Evgeni Malkin are inching closer to a return. This week’s episode highlights goaltender Tristan Jarry, and whether or not the 25-year-old’s recent play warrants any kind of skepticism as the team’s number one netminder with this squad looking to make another long run through the postseason. The mailbag segment sees Robbie and I delve into the world of professional sports chants, reminiscing about other collapses throughout franchise history, talking about the expansion draft, and wondering what next year’s Penguins team might look like. The 2021 NHL trade deadline is in the books. The Pittsburgh Penguins did add to their often injury-plagued squad, acquiring longtime Los Angeles Kings forward Jeff Carter, a familiar face for GM Ron Hextall. While the Penguins added a new piece to their group, so too did the other teams throughout the difficult East Division. The PensBurgh Podcast is here this week to recap the trade deadline and to see where the Pens stand with 13 games to go before the playoffs begin. This week’s mailbag segment sees Robbie and I touch on some of the Penguins’ biggest rivals over the years, wondering what former GM Jim Rutherford would have done differently, and figuring out who would win a battle royal. It got personal. Don’t forget to support us by rating and subscribing to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. The Pittsburgh Penguins have experienced a bit of a downswing over their last few games. Giving up a combined 15 goals over the span of two games is never a good thing. Why have the Pens looked a little leaky lately? Does it come down to bad defensive positioning? Shaky goaltending? A combination of these and other factors? Or, as GM Ron Hextall recently said in an interview, are we all overrating to a simple blip on the radar? In addition to the recap and main segment, the mailbag is absolutely loaded this week, with eight participants, 11 total questions, and a whole variety of unique answers. What fictional hockey players would help this current Penguins squad? Could Mike Matheson get a shot playing on the wing? What would it take for the NHL to ban Tom Wilson? Following the completion of the season series against the New York Islanders on Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins are back in action later tonight with another two-game set against the Boston Bruins. Jason Zucker has returned to the lineup following his one-month absence (good!), but now Tristan Jarry’s status is up-in-the-air after being unexpectedly pulled from the game after completing the first period of Monday’s contest (not so good!). With this episode of the PensBurgh Podcast, Robbie and I analyze the importance of Zucker’s return, how that might take some pressure off other forwards, and whether or not GM Ron Hextall’s best trade deadline move may be to make no move at all. This week’s mailbag segment also sees us discuss our other favorite teams, hockey jerseys, the Mighty Ducks, and much more. Winners of three out of their last four contests, the Pittsburgh Penguins sit pretty comfortably in third place in the East Division. Granted, the last five games being against the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres means the Penguins have likely been heavy favorites, but they will take points wherever and whenever they can get them. Injuries have (once again) ravaged this team. What else is new? With so many forwards lost to longer-term injury, now including Kasperi Kapanen, it has been nothing short of a miracle that this current Penguins team is collecting any kind of points. Now with Kapanen set to miss an extended period of time, what can the Pens do to ensure they don’t freefall out of a playoff spot? In addition to tackling this question, a loaded, six-question mailbag has new co-host Robbie and I ranking the Reverse Retro jerseys, talking about goal songs, and much more: Don’t forget to support us by rating and subscribing to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. The Pittsburgh Penguins were riding high one week ago. Their winning streak had reached five games and many were starting to believe that this team, even with their shortcomings, looked like a solid playoff contender. Fast forward to now, and Evgeni Malkin and Teddy Blueger are on IR, the team has lost their last two contests, and we are all waiting with baited breath to see the severity of the injury to Malkin. Should be miss an extended period of time, the Penguins, as they are currently constructed, are doomed. The PensBurgh Podcast poses this question on this week’s episode: how will the Penguins cope without Blueger, Malkin, and Jason Zucker? Will Ron Hextall and company try to weather the storm with what they have or does this injury situation speed up Hextall’s trade plans? In addition to that, the mailbag segment takes us on a unique history lesson through hockey’s evolution, as we discuss how skating equipment and goalie equipment have changed since the sport’s inception. Hooks was flabbergasted by what I had discovered. Don’t forget to support us by rating and subscribing to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. How about those Pittsburgh Penguins? Winners of four out of their last five games, the team is riding high with stellar goaltending from a reformed Tristan Jarry and a defensive unit that has been jolted by the return of Brian Dumoulin. Add into the equation that the Pens are about to see the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils a combined 15 more times this season, and the arrow could easily be pointing upwards toward the trade deadline in one month’s time. This episode of the PensBurgh Podcast attempts to answer one simple question: why? The combination of Kasperi Kapanen and Evgeni Malkin have resulted in both forwards putting up four points and eight points in each player’s last five games respectively. Originally traded to presumably play alongside Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel, the two-time Penguin in Kapanen has found a home on Evgeni Malkin’s right side. Needless to say, the 34-year-old Russian superstar has turned his corner and is back to his dominant self. But why do players like Kapanen (and James Neal, Patric Hornqvist, and Phil Kessel before him) find more success with Geno than Sidney Crosby? That question, and more, is answered in this week’s episode. Throw in a seven-question mailbag and you have the makings for one hefty podcast. Hooks and I analyze The Office characters, talk about some spiffy, new Pensburgh merchandise, and theorize if a Staal brother could make his way to the Steel City. The Penguins have been in a solid run of form over their last several games, winning three out of their last four contests dating back to February 18. However, with all the ups comes a significant down, as Jason Zucker suffered a longer-term lower-body injury in the Penguins’ 3-2 OT win against the Capitals on February 23. Who will be the man that replaces Zucker alongside Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust? Will a rejuvenated Zach-Aston-Reese see a promotion to the top-six? Could a healthy Jared McCann try to prove his worth in an elevated role? Additionally, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby recently played in his 1,000th NHL game. Frank and I spend some time reminiscing about the captain’s Hall of Fame career with a look back at some of our favorite Sidney Crosby moments. And, like always, the show reaches its conclusion with a loaded, eight-question mailbag featuring questions surrounding the future of the Penguins’ blue line depth to wondering how much playing time Tristan Jarry will see as the season gets deeper. Over the last week, the Pittsburgh Penguins have won two out of their last three games, yet sit in fifth place (and out of a playoff spot) in the East Division. While there have been encouraging signs of life from the team, something, or things, still feel off. With the team’s most recent and arguably most complete game of the season in the books, the PensBurgh Podcast is back this week to figure out if this stretch of games will be marked as a turning point in the Penguins’ up-an-down season or looked back as some sort of anomaly. The biggest topic of discussion on this week’s podcast will center around the roster, and whether or not the switching around of a few players on different lines will do anything to jumpstart a few players’ offensive production. In addition to the game recaps and general discussion, the mailbag is filled with a few questions that will be sure to spark debate. What rule or rules should be added or subtracted from the NHL’s rulebook? Can a healthy Jared McCann play a pivotal role on the fourth line when he returns? And what is there to make of these Sidney Crosby trade rumors? Is the future Hall of Famer on his way out the door for pastures anew? These questions and more are addressed in this week’s edition of the PensBurgh Podcast. Don’t forget to support us by rating and subscribing to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. The last two weeks have been a whirlwind for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. To game postponements due to surging COVID-19 cases around the NHL to the hiring of two new front office faces, the Pens have made sure to keep everyone on their toes.
Garrett is riding solo this week, but is still here to break everything down.
The podcast kicks off with a recap of the January 11 game against the New York Islanders. The Penguins have played just three games since the start of February due to game postponements, meaning the team will now be forced to play 44 games in an 84-day stretch to finish the regular season.
Switching gears away from the on-ice product, the organization has now found its new General Manager and President of Hockey Operations in Ron Hextall and Brian Burke respectively. Hextall and Burke are no strangers to NHL front offices, so we try to examine what roles both men will have in shaping the future of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Late Wednesday night, a tweet was sent out from Vegas-based radio personality Brian Blessing: Does a Marc-Andre Fleury reunion make sense? Realistically, how would the Penguins fit Fleury’s cap hit of $7 million into their plans, if at all?
And finally, the podcast reaches its conclusion with our mailbag segment. Will Brian Burke ever wear a tie in a normal fashion? Should Evgeni Malkin get demoted to a bottom-six role? Is Mike Sullivan on the hot seat with a new GM in town?
Answers to these questions and many more in this week’s PensBurgh Podcast:

The last seven days have brought with them change at all levels of the ice for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Remember when not having enough healthy defensemen was the Penguins’ biggest issue? Me too. Now, ex-GM Jim Rutherford has unexpectedly resigned, leaving the Penguins in a mad dash to try and reorganize their front office well into the 2021 season. With one of the longest episodes of the PensBurgh Podcast to date, Frank and I touched on a myriad of topics, from the blue line being held together with glue and duct tape, to the bombshell announcement of Jim Rutherford’s resignation. We kicked off the show with an abbreviated recap segment of the games against the Rangers (4-3 SOW), Rangers (3-2 W), Bruins (3-2 OTL), Bruins (4-1 L). The majority of this week’s episode is dedicated to analyzing GMJR’s resignation, what may have led it it, his legacy as Pens’ GM, and what the team will look to do in a post-Rutherford era. And of course, the always-fun mailbag segment was also loaded with seven very fun and hot-take-inducing questions like:
What are the most underrated, overrated, favorite, and least favorite Jim Rutherford moves.
How much more time does the team have to get things firing on all cylinders before it’s too late? With this in mind and GMJR gone, are more big changes to follow?
How would we build the ideal player? Zdeno Chara’s size? Connor McDavid’s speed? Alex Ovechkin’s shot? Possibilities are endless.
Whether or not the resignation of GMJR suddenly inspire Mario Lemieux to take a hard look at a combination owner/GM position?
Would trading Kris Letang bring with it any value in return? Or is it best to let him figure his game out and hope he rights the ship?
Does Patrik Allvin show any signs of utilizing the Penguins’ analytics staff?
Can anyone give Pierre-Olivier Joseph a snappy nickname, something like PO-Joe?

The Penguins will head into tonight’s game against the New York Rangers with a defensive unit that is being held together by duct tape and bobby pins. But before we delve into the defensive doom and despair, we have a whole lot more to examine on this week’s episode of the PensBurgh Podcast. We kicked off the show with recaps of the games against the Flyers (5-2 L), Capitals (4-3 OTW), and Capitals (5-4 OTW). We also look ahead to the Penguins’ first game of the season against the New York Rangers. And in doing so, we examine the Rangers’ current rebuild and talk about the rising stars the team has — like the 2020 number one overall pick, Alexis Lafreniere, and Kaapo Kakko. The team’s rebuild is happening faster than many anticipated, and we see when the Rangers could return to Metropolitan Division prominence. On the flip side, the Penguins’ defense is in shambles early on this season. Mike Matheson, Marcus Pettersson, and Juuso Riikola have already suffered longer term injuries. Frank and Garrett try to see what the Penguins can do to help alleviate some of the struggles they might have on the blue line for the foreseeable future. And, like always, the podcast ends with another fun mailbag segment that sees us touch on a variety of topics such as:
The Jack Roslovic trade rumors. Do the Penguins really need another depth piece? And would he really improve the right wing, assuming that’s where he slots?
Which NHL goalies would be the best player outside of the net?
What’s up with Evgeni Malkin? Are his best years finally behind him? Should the team think about seriously moving on from the Russian star?
And lastly, we put our thinking caps on to figure out which players have the best hair on the team (the answers may not surprise you).

A new season. A new Pensburgh Podcast episode. And a brand new co-host. It’s a whole bunch of new here. With the Penguins’ season officially underway and Game #1 in the books, Garrett and the new guy, Frank, are here to dissect the best and the worst from the first game of the season. And for those worried about Hooks’ contributions to the podcast, he’ll be popping in every now and again if needed, but Frank is here to stay. We kicked off this episode with a recap of the first game of the season and we looked forward to Pittsburgh’s next game — later tonight, again, against the Philadelphia Flyers. Perhaps one of the bigger talking points from Game 1 was the Pens’ defense and more specifically, the third defense pairing of Mike Matheson and Cody Ceci. It was a debut I’m sure Matheson would like to forget (the Quebec native was on the ice for three out of the first four goals against, and the other one was scored while he was in the penalty box). Sidney Crosby’s first goal of the season was a special one for several reasons. Not only did the captain score a one-handed gem (even if Carter Hart was out of position), but he has now scored seven opening night goals, one more than Mario Lemieux ever did. And, of course, what PensBurgh Podcast would be complete without a mailbag segment? -Is Tristan Jarry “the guy” now with Matt Murray north of the border? -What players will make the biggest impact with the Penguins this season? -And with Pittsburgh playing in a crowded and competitive Mass Mutual Division, what are the team’s greatest strengths to outmatch their competition? All of these questions and much more was talked about during this episode. We hope you enjoy the first PensBurgh Podcast of 2021: Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Sportsnet's Justin Bourne joins the podcast to shed some light on a few Penguins players who have previous ties to the Maple Leafs, and how he thinks those players will perform in the black-and-gold. There’s plenty more good stuff in the podcast to listen to as well, including:
As a right-hand shot and being a player with some skills, does Kapanen have anything to offer or a fit on the first power play group?
A look into how Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby should benefit from playing with Kapanen, and how Kapanen will buy Guentzel and Crosby a bit of extra space (hint: shares a name with a certain 1990’s Keanu Reeves/Sandra Bullock movie)
And finally....after watching him closely last season with the Maple Leafs, it possible Cody Ceci actually is better than his reputation and baggage would suggest?
Garrett and Jim also bring us up to speed on the NHL scheduling and the new off-sides rule that would have had big ramifications on a 2016 playoff game against Tampa. And we also discuss what the new division-only game schedule means and just how tough the new division might be with Boston joining the fray. Learn more about your ad choices.
