My goal with this podcast is to try and find legitimately interesting people who can hold a conversation. Luke is one such human. After recently writing his excellent book, Wanting, we spend over an hour talking about nearly everything else other than the book. Especially my favourite topic: the cult of experts. About LukeLuke has co-created and led four companies in wellness, consumer products, and technology. He’s currently Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Director of Programs at the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship where he also teaches business at The Catholic University of America. It was a pleasure to finally manage to sit down with Andrew and talk to him about courses, learning and how the hell you can actually promote this stuff without losing your mind. We also get into our evolving opinions of Twitter and promoting ourselves in general, how to do it whilst keeping sane, and how best we can launch courses that still feel genuine. About AndrewAndrew is the online course guy. He ran the On Deck Course Creator Fellowship for its first and only cohort and continues to work with course creators and companies in online education.

After my first episode with Nick, I immediately wanted him back. This time we were to talk about more esoteric stuff (my words), stuff less related to performance. It was a pleasure having Nick on again, but we didn't get too deep into philosophy like I wanted to. That's for round 3. About NickNick Winkelman is the head of athletic performance & science for the Irish Rugby Football Union. I've known and connected with Benjamin through Twitter over the last year, and he's an excellent and wide-ranging thinker. I've been wanting to get him on the podcast for a while but it's mainly my schedule that has made it take this long to get together... In this chat we talk about everything from NFTs to the modern way of working, and why he recently left his job when he was asked to stop working from home. You'll enjoy this one. Colin is fascinating to me, because he does something that in the UK I couldn't even imagine happening for a long time: he sells weed legally. And not only does he sell weed, he sells a LOT of weed. As CTO of Unrivaled Brands—a publicly traded cannabis brand—Colin continues to push into new and bigger markets and build something pretty amazing. I got to sit down with him for nearly an hour and quiz him about how it all works. What about regulation? How do you manage different packaging and product needs in different states? How do you make any money with all these regulations? And just how do you manage to sell yourself honestly and authentically when there's a stigma attached? I had a truly excellent conversation here and I hope you enjoy it. About ColinColin is CTO at Unrivalled Brands. I discovered Ed Latimore on Twitter around 2015/2016. He was one of the only voices I found around that time talking sense on there and I loved everything he wrote. Fast forward quite a few years and it's a real honour for me to get to sit down and chat to him for an hour on the podcast. This conversation is far-reaching and wide-ranging. We cover a tiny bit about Twitter, but then we really get into some meaningful topics that I think you'll really enjoy. Ed is a great thinker and it was fun to think with him for a while. What is there really to say about Chris Williamson? A climbing YouTube and podcasting star with his excellent Modern Wisdom podcast, it was an honour to sit down with him for an hour and chat all things self improvement, realty TV, and rather surprisingly: how to work out when you have enough. Bob had me on his podcast a while ago and we had a great conversation. As is now often customary for me in these instances, I then asked Bob to come on my podcast so we could continue our interesting conversation. I met Blake last year and we hit it off...not. We generally spend our time just insulting each other. This episode may have elements of me insulting Blake, and Blake insulting me. We may talk about Twitter, marketing, being a CMO, why he decided to make Float and maybe more insults.
I recently had a chat with The Stoic Empire on a Twitter Spaces chat about the thread that we collaborated on: https://twitter.com/TheStoicEmpire/status/1379472448538742796 ("How to avoid wasting your life"). It was almost like a radio phone-in show where we had people asking very thoughtful questions and we did our best to answer them. This was a lot of fun and we'll probably do something similar again soon...if I can work out how to make the Twitter Spaces audio output a bit better.

About Paul (in his own words)As far back as I can remember, being creative has always been a part of my DNA, something to figure out and something that fuelled me. Until recently I never stopped to ask myself why. The answer is quite simple. Being creative gives me a sense of balance like nothing else. When I’m in that place, a place where my mind and my hands are one (“the zone” if you will), I am at peace. That peace can only be described as a cleanly struck chord that resonates within me. And like a chord, it doesn’t ring forever. This is where discipline has its merits. A couple of weeks ago I got introduced to 75 Hard. Since then I've failed it 3 times. In this episode, I explore what's going wrong.
I've tried a new format for today—I went for a walk. Every Sunday I'll be releasing an episode where I ramble along a walk around things that have interested me this week. Here's what I talked about: 75 hard How my Twitter is going Why I don’t talk about design or marketing barely ever—even though it takes up 80% of my time Content production means looking to the 3-5 years, not months
Going from 0 - 1 is difficult when we're starting something. Going from 0 - 0.1 is even harder. Just beginning is tough. Let's talk about how I'm experiencing this right now with my super secret Twitter account.
Visual Twitter is exploding right now: people are setting up accounts everywhere that are mostly made up of visuals. I think it’s one of the most positive trends to happen to twitter in the 12 years I’ve been using it. I want to show you how to start your own visual account (even if you’re not a designer), why you should, and what you can learn from Visual Twitter even if you don’t fancy it. Links I mention in here My podcast episode about Visual Twitter with Jens https://twitter.com/behaviorgap (Behavior Gap on Twitter) https://twitter.com/visualizevalue (Visualize Value on Twitter) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yl_H-3f_zew&feature=youtu.be (My YouTube video on the design CRAP principles)
Some of you may remember I decided to start podcasting daily again. It’s been 2 weeks now so I thought it was about time I gave you a bit of a review. What can you learn from creating something every day? Let’s find out.
Every second there’s around 6,000 tweets written on Twitter. That’s 350,000 tweets per minute, 500 million tweets per day and 200 billion per year. (https://www.dsayce.com/social-media/tweets-day/ (Thanks David Sayce for these figures)) That’s a lot of tweets. Trying to make your 1 tweet stand out amongst 6,000 is hard. Trying to make your 1 tweet stand out amongst the other 350,000 that got posted that minute is even harder. So what do you do? In short: create a value tipping point.
I have a theory I want to share with you. It’s quite controversial. Here it is: I don’t think it’s a good idea to grow your Twitter account quickly. I think it’s better to grow true fans slowly than creating followers at all costs. Let me explain why.
When I say the N word people shudder. Niche. Other than talking about invoicing, niche is one of the only words I can say to my clients that makes them nervous. They look at me funny. Like I’ve just asked them to sell their babies or kill their dog. I don’t want you to sell your babies or kill your dog. Or any other animal for that matter. I want to talk to you about nests, anvils and feathers.
How many times have you said any of these things? “I have no ideas”? “My mind has gone blank” My personal favourite is: “I just can’t think of anything to say”. I call it Blank Page Syndrome (so do other people—I didn’t invent the term). It really annoys me when people say “I have no ideas”. It shouldn’t annoy me I _know_, but it does. It annoys me even more when I say it _to myself_. Why does it annoy me more than the last season of Game of Thrones? The simplest reason is: you saying “I have no ideas” isn’t true. It’s never true.
If you're 2 weeks in, you've only just began. Even if you're a year in, you've only just began. Even if you're 10 years in, you've only just began.
When you are looking to replicate people's tactics whilst you are building an audience be careful that you don't copy an anomaly.
In today's slightly longer Sunday episode I talk about the idea that you are not defined by your job. You are not pigeonholed by your past experiences. You are you.
It's more powerful to share content from a point of view of "here's what I've learned" rather than saying "This is correct". One way will get people to listen. The other way will just rile people up. Let me try and explain.
As you know, I'm a big proponent of doing things daily. I approach most of my content production in a daily fashion. I publish a daily podcast, I make daily images for https://twitter.com/producemore (ProduceMore) and I've taken on many other daily tasks in the past. I think it's the best way to build an audience. Let me tell you why.
There's 2 main ways to build an audience: 1000 true fans from 2000 people 1000 true fans from 100,000 people Both require very different methods. Today, I briefly discuss them. https://kk.org/thetechnium/1000-true-fans/ (Kevin Kelly's 1000 True Fans article)
What happens when you give something a year instead of giving up after two weeks? Let's talk about that.
I'm trying a new format - 6 episodes a week short form and 1 long form. These will be quicker episodes and shorter ideas designed to get you to think about design, marketing or life. This one is about how people won't give you 2 hours of their Shout outs https://thatsthenorm.com/extreme-production/ (Norman Chella has just put out my chat with him on his podcast) https://www.producemore.xyz/product/press-start/ (I've just released my new book called Press Start) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqLngq9lRoU&list=PLA4DMt10rwOULyeeqDTmJ526g_evnQZ4w&index=12 (I also mention The Content Onion)
Beyond starting things, it's even harder to finish them. This is something I constantly struggle with so I thought I'd share my thoughts. It's tough to start things. Getting over the feelings of inadequecy, imposter syndrome, overthinking. They're all challenging. I've been thinking a lot about overthinking the last few weeks. Here's why I think its so hard to start something—and what we can do to fix it.
On October 2017 I recorded a podcast about worrying about who I am. On 20th April 2020 I recorded almost exactly the same episode with The Good Syndrome. Repeating yourself is good. This episode tells you why.
In this video I talk about the idea of creating swirling pieces of content around you. Related tweet thread: https://twitter.com/craigburgess/status/1262503271517863937?s=21
How can you make more content than anybody else you know without feeling overwhelmed and going a little bit mental? Instead of making content, let's talk about making content...plus.
As I mentioned last time—I'm recording a video course about design. I thought it's time we looked in at my progress so far (so progress), and let me explain to you what's been going right and what's been going wrong.
What's the thing that holds you back from getting starting making content? Videos? Podcasts? It's usually that we're scared. But we're not just scared, we're scared of one thing: we're scared of being bad.
I've spent the last 7 days setting myself a challenge: can I record a FULL video design course in just 7 days? The answer—rather predictably—was no. But I've learned a lot, and I'm here to share what I've learned, and continue to learn.
I thought it was time I started taking Twitter seriously. I've been messing with social media for so long and it was time for me to either shut them all down or do something with them. This episode is about my explorations with "Twitter marketing" and actually working out how to use it properly.
I’ve spent the last few weeks in LOTS of meetings and talking to a lot of our clients at Genius Division. It lead me to think a little bit more deeply about that entire process, actually TALKING to clients. I thought it'd be useful to talk about how to talk to clients.
There's lots of things I wish I would have done when I first started my design career, but this one is a big one. The worst bit? It's taken me 15 years to realise it.
So where have you been again Craig?! This episode talks about my difficulty to find time to podcast (again) and what steps I've taken to overcome it. It's hard for people to find time to do their marketing, especially when it isn't a priority for most people. Between tweeting, blogging, doing LinkedIn and all that other guff, nobody has any time for anything. Here's how I refocused and got back to doing stuff again.
I've just started a new show called The 9 Minute Design Show. You can find it in your favourite way to consume podcasts, but I thought I'd let you have a listen to an episode without leaving here. Let me know what you think.
When you're a designer you get so addicted to designing that you tend to do it too much. It usually leads to burnout and I know, because I've been there. Twice. This episode talks about how to recognise burnout before it becomes a problem, and what to do about it. Important notes from this episodeTo be an effective designer you need to: Be creative Be open to new ideas and points of view Be working at your maximum capacity Be happy You can't be working at your maximum if you're burned out and working too hard That usually leads to burnout: Can't think of new ideas Aren't enjoying your job You're working long hours but getting nothing done You don't feel as good as you used to I've burned out once, and nearly burned out a second time. The first time I was just doing too much work. My entire life used to be designing things, from 9am to 10pm. I used to come home from work and do nothing else. I was the most productive in terms of volume of work that I'd ever been, but it didn't last long. The second time I made a massive change to my life: I designed less and threw myself into a new hobby: jiu jitsu. A bit about jiu jitsu - problem solving, but in a physical realm (problem solving with dire physical consequences) As creatives we need space. You need space for creativity to thrive. You can't do your best work when you're frazzled and tired. When you work all the time you're frazzled and tired. Create more space. Do less. Read more. As much as you love what you're doing, doing it less so you keep loving it. Write more! That's helped me loads.
440 million. Right now, that's roughly how many other blogs are out there on the web. You don't need me to tell you that blogging is huge on the internet, but…it's kind of a big deal. Let's talk about how to write a good blog post, and how to make it interesting and get people reading. I've also written an article to go with this episode: https://getdoingthings.com/blog/7-blogging-commandments/ (https://getdoingthings.com/blog/7-blogging-commandments/)
A year and a half ago, a regular podcast used to live here. Now, I'm back doing the same thing again. Here I explain what happened.
Should you worry about being more disciplined? Does it really matter? And how do you become more disciplined anyway?

Sometimes you just need to rekindle your fire, learn and be inspired by other people.

You can’t just do the thing you want to do, and constantly get better.
You need to see what other people are doing too. Absorb. Learn. Be inspired.
If you write, you need to read.
If you speak, you need to listen to other people speak.
You need to get ideas.
You need to discover your fuel.
My fuel for my fire

Exercising

You can use social media to hold yourself accountable for things you want to achieve. Here's how.
Why do you publicly announce your challenges?
Why do you do it when you usually fail?
Accountability

There's only one thing that matters, and that's you. Never give up on that.
Life is sometimes easy. Life is sometimes hard.
Sometimes you know what you’re doing with your life.
Sometimes you feel lost.
Sometimes you’ll feel amazing.
Sometimes you’ll feel rubbish.
Sometimes you’ll feel like a failure.
Sometimes you’ll forget your failures.
Never give up on the only thing that matters though. Yourself.

We've all got flaws, and sometimes you need to learn to get over them.
We’ve all got flaws.
Most of us aren’t aware of our own flaws, because most of us aren’t self aware.
I choose to pay attention to them and try and change myself if its important.
Occasionally I also try changing myself in some ways that I don’t really think need changing, just to try it on for size (no beer/no bad food)
How to get over your flaws
Be open and honest with your friends (and have good friends).
Listen to what people say about you, and listen to what people say.
Don’t get offended.
Pause and reflect.
Decide whether to take action or not. You have a choice.
Take action. Change yourself (or not).

Today I talk about journaling, and about how I approach it.
http://amzn.to/2CReMkq (The Daily Stoic Journal)
I’ve spent the last 4 months (started at the beginning of August) writing in a journal nearly daily.
I’ve done it lots of ways, right and wrong. And I think I’ve finally worked out how to do it properly.
What is journaling?
Computer/Paper
Why should you do it?
Self awareness
Peaceful mind
Develops mindfulness
Helps see patterns
Relaxing
Can actually replace meditation
Improves your writing
How I started journaling the wrong way
Freeform journaling
How I now journal the right way
Ask questions
Smaller chunks more often: morning, midday, right before bed
Setup a template
The questions I ask myself
How am I feeling right now?
How am I feeling about the day ahead?
What can I accept that I can’t change?
What is the most important (not urgent) thing that I do?
What have I agreed to do, that I do not want to do?
Who do I need to be for this day to work?
What can I do today that will be a unique expression of me?
What small steps can I take to show that I am serious about loving myself?
What would scare me slightly that I could do today?
Where is my attention going right now?
How am I not being generous (with my time/words/presence)?
How am I feeling right now?
What was the most important thing I did today?
How do I feel right now?
What has brought me the most joy today?
What caused me the most inner conflict and stress?
Do I need to clear anything up?
What did I learn?
What’s one idea you had today?
What am I grateful for?
What do I need to let go?

Want to feel more fulfilled? Discover Your Own Thing.
http://www.getdoingthings.com/interesting/3 (Interesting Conversations episode 3 is out now!)
The biggest thing I’ve learned in 2017 is the importance of Your Own Thing.
Everybody in the world who you follow on social media has Their Own Thing, and it’s why you follow them.
It’s something for you to discover for yourself.
You can have several of Your Own Things, but you can only be truly known publicly for one of them.
You must learn to work hard and discover Your Own Thing.
Discovering Your Own Thing isn’t about making money or marketing yourself. It’s about becoming satisfied with your life, and being fulfilled that you know you’re working on Your Own Thing.

Most businesses have a basic understanding of marketing. This thing I talk about today is the only thing you need to know.
http://www.getdoingthings.com/interesting/3 (Interesting Conversations episode 3 is out now!)
The mistake I see so many people making with marketing is really starting to annoy me.
Selling.
Selling is OK, let’s not be wrong here.
BUT marketing should not be selling as a primary source.
Marketing should be about providing value, and making yourself an indispensable resource.
You can legitimately produce content first then figure out products after.
You can’t sell first, then get anybody to listen to your marketing afterwards.

There's an attitude in society that's quite dangerous, and it starts with this phrase: "I don't know what I want to do!"
http://www.getdoingthings.com/interesting/3 (Interesting Conversations episode 3 is out now!)
There’s an attitude that lots of young people have that can be quite dangerous
Not just young people either…
I don’t know what I want to do!
The only way to find out is by DOING
By TRYING
By experimenting
“Follow your passion” doesn’t work for most people
We’re taught that “follow your passion” is right, and we’re wrong if that doesn’t work
We don’t often become passionate about things UNTIL we get good at them
It’s hard to be passionate about things when you’re rubbish
So it takes time to find a passion, and through lots of doing

We're now living in the age of the web personality. Here's why it's important.

Some have over 60 million
Traditional TV is dying and being replaced by Netflix
We live in the age of the web personality
People will popular blogs
Popular Twitter
Popular podcasts

Space—and inaction—is as important as taking action and doing stuff.
http://www.getdoingthings.com/interesting/3 (Interesting Conversations episode 3 is out now!)
You’ll notice this weekend I didn’t record any podcasts.
And you’ll notice I didn’t do my daily emails.
Both of these things were deliberate, to create some space in my life.
The concept of space in weightlifting (rest)
The concept of space in eating healthy (refeed days/cheat days)
The body and mind cannot tolerate being under constant pressure forever
Eventually, the constant pressure grinds down the ability of your brain to function properly
Pressure—Rest—Pressure—Rest—etc.
The brain needs space for creativity
If it is occupied with doing, it cannot also create at the same time
Real creativity only happens when the mind is empty

Saying NO

I'm returning to a topic today that I've spoken about a lot: being yourself, and how important that is.
I’ve spoken variously about being yourself over the nearly 300 podcasts I’ve recorded.
I mentioned it in https://www.getdoingthings.com/podcast/44/ (Episode 44 (Being human in your marketing)), I mentioned it a bit in https://www.getdoingthings.com/podcast/26/ (Episode 26 (Embrace your weirdness))
But what do I really mean by that?
Being yourself is quite simply not hiding anything. Not holding back any part of yourself because it’s “not professional”
Not holding back any part of you because it’s too much of something or too little of that.
Content marketing is becoming the default way of marketing nearly anything.
Content marketing has to be fronted by a human being, and the best kind of human to front anything is one that’s honest with themselves and comfortable in their own skin.
Somebody who is afraid to say something, or afraid to show their true self is showing they’re not quite sure who they are. This makes them look weak.

Because I help out on a few different design courses near me, I get asked quite a bit about “advice” for creatives.
I’ve said the usual stuff in the past, and made a fair few podcasts about it.
But one thing I’ve only recently started touching on is personal branding and building your own audience.
Your own audience is truly a path to financial freedom, and doing the work you want to do for people who appreciate it.

Today I talk about how daily challenges have helped me improve myself, and how it helps me in my life.
The first ever one: Novl Cuisine - improved my design skills
Nice Smile Sir - improved my photography skills
Other ones in between: design skills
Then I did a logo one to improve logo skills
Then I did the podcast one so I could learn how to podcast.
Now I do a daily email one too to practice writing
And I also practice a morning ritual of reading and meditation as a daily challenge
I also tell myself I need to go to the gym 4 times a week
All of these challenges have built up into powerful habits.

I genuinely believe daily challenges are one of the best ways to improve yourself.
Why would I want to start a challenge to improve myself?
It’s better than setting goals
You’ll make a new habit
You’ll get better at something
What simple thing can you do every day?
Commit to a time period.
Tell as many people as possible that you’re going to do it. Accountability.
If possible, get somebody else to do it with you.
If you fail, don’t get disheartened. Start again the day after.
After your time period, assess. Do you want to carry on?

Today I reflect on 2017, and how important of a year it's been for me.
Throughout December and beginning with today’s episode, I’m going to reflect on 2017 and try and find some key learning points from it.
Today I want to discuss the main 3 strands of my year: podcasts, goals and challenges.
2 books have changed my life this year: http://amzn.to/2jXLwV5 (The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod) and http://amzn.to/2Ab6zYi (The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks). http://amzn.to/2Ab784m (Expert Secrets by Russel Brunson) is fast closing the year to be another very important book for me
My history of goals: Between 2010 and now, I’ve always struggled with setting goals. Over the years I’ve set all kinds of goals.
This year, for 2017, I set 13 goals of the things I wanted to achieve.
I’ve failed to achieve about 10 of them, and I’m not on track to complete the other 3.
Challenges on the other hand: over the years I’ve been good at these.
This year, I’m up to around 293 podcasts. I’ve recording a podcast mostly every day and for the last 3 months I’ve recorded them live on the day.
Challenges work. Challenges make me productive. I’ve just set another one: to write my book in 200 days.
The podcast
My podcast throughout the year has changed my outlook on so many things. Marketing, ways of doing business, the power of content production and being part of people’s lives in a positive way.
My podcast has fundamentally changed my focus and outlook on life. It’s made me want to share my ideas more, and help people more.

How do you get productive? Learn to stay level.
One of the best ways to stay productive over long periods of time—extreme production—is by making sure you keep your body level
Keep your mind level. Don’t get too stressed, too angry, too happy. Focus on controlling your mental state.
Physical. Keep your body level. Keep it at a normal body weight. Train it physically.
Diet. Eat properly. Don’t eat like a child. Keep it level. Don’t binge and purge, try to stick to calorie limits.
Balancing all these things are helping me write around 1000-2000 words a day for my book, write my daily email, produce a daily podcast, lift weights, and still have loads of energy left over. It works.

Social media automation tools like Buffer and HootSuite are getting really popular. Today I say why I've stopped using them.
Using automated tools for social media CAN be good when used right.
https://buffer.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA3dTQBRDnARIsAGKSflnaBxce1Ayg83JBDwQOAHh-gOA9owNX1ZN14HC3pohdqUD9HCqely0aAr4tEALw_wcB (Buffer) / https://hootsuite.com (HootSuite) / https://meetedgar.com/ (MeetEdgar)
They’ll force you to make a schedule and think of stuff in advance to put on your social media feeds.
However, that’s where its usefulness stops.
It stops you from being present
It stops you from being current
It makes you think too far into the future rather than things that are happening right now in your life. You might miss tweeting about a key thing
It stops you from thinking about being off-the-cuff

Today I'm talking about being human in your marketing and how powerful it can be.
Back in https://www.getdoingthings.com/podcast/29/ (Episode 29) I spoke about the idea of being human, and about how we need to remember to be normal and interact with people as our interactions get increasingly more digital.
Today, I want to apply a similar concept to marketing.
As I’ve been getting more and more into content marketing and personal branding, I’ve noticed a lot of patterns and the same ways that people do a lot of things.
Some of them work, some of them are incredibly fake and still work, and some just don’t.
The biggest thing content marketing and personal branding does when combined though, it forces you to either be yourself or invent another self to present to others.
I don’t recommend inventing another self. I tried that and it didn’t work.
I’m listening to an audiobook at the minute and it talks about storytelling, particularly in Hollywood films.
It talks about how they all follow a very simple story structure, and the book calls it the Hero’s 2 journeys.
Every story needs a hero. And that hero goes on 2 journeys:
The obvious external journey. Going somewhere, escaping from something, winning something, etc.
The internal journey: how the hero develops and changes and ultimately transforms as they go along the journey.
This trope is followed in every film ever. We can all think of a film where the hero desperately tries to win something throughout the entire film, gets to the end of the film, and gives it all up because they’re now a different person.
It’s the same with marketing. Every piece of marketing needs an obvious external journey. It’s selling a story, an idea, showing people how to do something, whatever.
But where the REAL marketing is done is the internal journey: connecting the person with your marketing message. This can only be done properly when you reveal yourself and be human.
It’s hard to do this, because every marketing and business book on the planet talks about professionalism and business and being a normal person as if they’re separate things. They’re not, and they can’t be if you want to become the best at marketing yourself as you possibly can be.

To be fair, Medium is quite a hot-bed for lots of annoying success style blogging, but I’m seeing a lot of anti-success stuff too
They’re always very negative and always very nasty, especially towards self improvement
I see this attitude a lot from quite a few people, who actually think wanting to improve yourself is a dirty word.
You shouldn’t be embarrassed for wanting to improve yourself, or wanting to be better
However, being happy with what you’ve got and grateful is important too
Ed Latimore said it well on Twitter https://twitter.com/edlatimore/status/931148963960508416 (when I asked him this very question): how do you balance being grateful with what you’ve got vs always improving.
“Gratitude reminds you it could be worse. Ambition makes you desire more. They balance each other out: gratitude against greed, ambition and lethargy.

Developing confidence not just as a creative but just in life is really important. I share a bit of a rant and some tips.
Way back in Episode 24 https://www.getdoingthings.com/podcast/24/ (I spoke about developing creative confidence)
After the last two episodes about the practices of a creative, I want to touch upon something that’s been bugging me in a wider sense.
Confidence. So many people lack it and don’t seem to want to become more confident, or don’t have the capacity to realise they aren’t currently confident.
Or maybe they don’t know how?
Why should you want to be more confident? Get more done, get more lucky, earn more money, do better things.
I don’t know all the answers here, but I do know what worked for me to become more confident, so I’m going to share it today.
Give presentations. See https://www.getdoingthings.com/podcast/25 (episode 25).
Do videos, teach online, podcast or blog.
Get good at something. It instantly makes you more confident.
Know yourself and become comfortable in your own skin. Whether becoming comfortable is part of becoming confident, I’m not sure.
Repeat these things over and over and never think you’ve become the best you can be at them.

Today I try and contemplate the most effective practices of a creative. Part Two.
You must never be satisfied with your work. Not in a bad way, just in a pursuit of improvement way.
You must appreciate other people’s work, get to know these people, and don’t become jealous.
You must be comfortable enough to develop your own style and way of doing things. Stop trying to be somebody else.
You must be open and honest and share your work and practices.
Teach as soon as you can in your career.

You must be curious about everything. Anything you see you must want to know more about. Any word, concept or thing you discover, you must want to find out what it is.
You must have a practice and methodology for creating new ideas.
You must be fearless in all pursuits. Any challenge you’re faced with, you face with a smile and a can do attitude.
You must write to understand yourself and your craft.
You must always be trying to improve and be curious about improving.

There’s a universal law in life: you get more of what you’re currently doing.
http://www.getdoingthings.com/interesting/2 (Interesting Conversations episode 2 is out now!)
There’s a universal law in life: you get more of what you’re currently doing. If you’re currently making loads of websites, people will ask you to make more websites.
You either consciously know this or you don’t.
If you don’t want to do something anymore, you need to just stop doing it. If it’s possible, go cold turkey. Say no.
You then need to work out what you WANT to do. This is where we start to work out who we want to be in life, what legacy we want to leave behind.
Most people don’t consciously craft their legacy. They let their legacy be crafted for them.
You need to match what you want to do with what you want to be known for. The only way you do that is by doing MORE of the thing you want to do.

Today I introduce my concept for getting more done: Extreme Production.
http://www.getdoingthings.com/interesting/2 (Interesting Conversations episode 2 is out now!)
Yesterday in episode 35 I spoke a lot about the power of doing stuff, and how often just doing something is better than endlessly planning it.
I’ve had a few people asking me whether I meant that planning was pointless. No, I didn’t mean that: I was talking about excessive planning.
And also, if it’s a binary choice between planning or doing, you should just do.
I like to ask myself a question when I get stuck in inaction-hell: “how would I do this if I had to start it tomorrow?”. It really refines down that perfect plan you’ve spent 4 months creating.
I think taking action—no matter how small—is a quicker way to success, and a quicker way to failure. Both are just as valuable.
The quicker you find out through EXPERIENCE whether something is good or bad, the better. You’ve got your learning, and you can move on.
Today I want to introduce my version of doing: Extreme Production.
Extreme Production is my method for improving and learning things FAST.
We can achieve things quicker, learn new things faster and turn our lives around sooner than we think, if we challenge ourselves.
Extreme Production as a methodology is doing a small chunk of something every day, non-stop and no excuses. I’ve used it to become a better designer, a better photographer, a better illustrator, a better logo designer, a better podcaster and a better writer.
It’s the only method that’s ever consistently worked for me to automatically improve at something.
Because you’re just making something every day, that thing can be anything, big or small. You’ll automatically start to become better in as little as 30 days with momentum and then compound progression.

http://www.getdoingthings.com/interesting/2 (nteresting Conversations episode 2 is out now!)
Over the next couple of days I’m going to be talking about making things, and about the power of action.
Generally there’s two types of people: makers and planners. One or the other isn’t wrong or right, but most people fall into one of them.
Over the years, after extensive experience of both planning and just making stuff and trying both approaches, I’ve come to believe that just starting is better.
If you just start something, you can learn faster, and you get the added momentum and nice feeling of doing stuff.
Planning is mostly just guessing for future situations you can’t control.
