DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS 1. What did you find to be the most impactful part of today’s sermon and why? 2. Drawing near to Christ in a time of suffering is critical, since suffering often leads us to call God’s character into question. Do you agree or disagree with that statement? Explain. 3. In developing “a framework for suffering,” we understand that, in part, it is so we might comfort others. How have you felt comforted by others, and how have found God use you to comfort others in need? 4. Discuss the notion that God desires for us to not be channels and not cisterns. 5. Another part of the framework for suffering is that we might not trust in ourselves but in our God. Discuss a time when your struggles bolstered your trust in God. If you find it difficult to trust in God because of a present struggle, would you be willing to share that with the group? 6. Another part of the framework for suffering is that by we learn to give thanks. Read and discuss 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Colossians 3:15, and Colossians 4:2. 7. We were encouraged to guard our hearts against bitterness. How do you navigate the biblical exhortation to be thankful with the human propensity to harbor bitterness?

Did it resolve? 3. Read and discuss Proverbs 19:11 and 1 Peter 2:19-25. What stands out to you in these verses? What other verses speak to overlooking offenses? 4. Review the four truths Pastor Jim highlighted that help “bring level-headed good sense in bearing up under grievances.” How does each point affect how we view and deal with the offenses of others? Which of these are strengths for you? Which do you struggle with? * The Sovereignty of God (1 Peter 2:19) * The Critical Role of Perseverance (1 Peter 2:20) * Overlooking an Offense is Christlike (1 Peter 2:21) * Jesus Has Forgiven All My Offenses (1 Peter 2:24-25) 5. How does our culture view and deal with offenses? How does this compare with a biblical approach? In what ways do modern cultural norms make it difficult for us to overlook an offense? 6. What kind of inner qualities are required in a person in order to overlook an offense? How can those qualities be developed within us? 7. “To be a follower of Jesus means to be an imitator of Jesus.” How do you respond to this statement? What does this mean in practical terms as you consider overlooking an offense? 8. In what circumstances might you struggle to overlook an offense? How does the gospel of Jesus call you to view that situation? How does Jesus provide both the example and the power to overlook an offense?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS 1. What did you find most encouraging from this message? What did you find most challenging? 2. In Ephesians 6:15, we are told to put on the gospel of peace “as shoes for your feet.” The word “peace” in this verse points to the fact that we are no longer at war with God if we are in Christ. Why do we need to have peace with God before we can experience the peace of God? 3. Discuss the notion that “peace is not a thing; it is a person.” Read John 14:27 and Ephesians 2:14. How is Jesus our peace? 4. An important part of establishing a disposition of peace is the idea of “taking captive every thought” (2 Corinthians 10:5), which requires fixing our eyes on Jesus. Read and discuss Hebrews 12:1-2 and 2 Corinthians 5:17. How can you discipline your mind to focus on Jesus? 5. Pastor Bruce mentioned that only 8 percent of the things we worry about have a basis in reality as something that should concern us. Discuss how well you do at managing worry. 6. Philippians 4:6-7 talks about prayer and gratitude. How do you focus on keeping a heart of gratefulness and prayer in times of difficulty? 7. It is important in the process of trying to establish peace that we recognize that we are crucified with Christ and that He is to live through us. What helps you to focus on Christ living through you? 8. What makes it difficult to maintain peace? What do you find to be helpful?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS 1. What did you find most encouraging from this message? What was the most challenging? 2. When we live a joy-filled life we have access, through the Holy Spirit, to the power to live a selfless life. Read Philippians 2:3-8. Discuss what makes it difficult for you to consider others more significant than yourself. Discuss how the proper perspective on a life of joy can facilitate greater selflessness. Is there an area of your life in which God is calling you to be more selfless? 3. The second point in living a joy-filled life is that it empowers us to live without grumbling. Read Philippians 2:14-16. What do you tend to grumble about? Outward grumbling always starts with inward thoughts. On what can you meditate to short circuit grumbling before it is expressed? 4. The third point in living a joy-filled life is that it empowers us to press on, even though life’s difficulties. Read Philippians 3:13-14. Discuss Paul’s primary consideration as he seeks to press on. 5. The fourth point in living a joy-filled life is that it empowers us to live a life without anxiety. Read Philippians 4:6-7. How do you respond to these verses internally? What are the things in this journey that are most likely to create anxiety for you? How have you sought to respond to the anxieties of life? Discuss how a life more centered in Joy can assist with the anxieties that you face. 6. Discuss the quote by Archibald Hart in his book The Anxiety Cure. “Anxiety is not a disorder that afflicts the weak, the fragile and the delicate. Often there is not the slightest hint of previous anxiety. This is the disorder of presidents, CEO’s, VP’s, ladder-climbers, powerhouses, dynamos, live wires, and go-getters. Reason? Anxiety is a disease of stress. High-pressure jobs take their toll more than low-key jobs. People who are caught up in the pursuit of excellence are particularly vulnerable because they can’t see the danger signs early enough.” 7. The fifth point in living a joy-filled life is that it empowers us to be content. Read Philippians 4:11-13. Where do you find discontentment in your life? Discuss this phrase: “Contentment is wanting what you already have.” How does that strike you? Discuss the distinction between being discontent and simply seeking to improve certain things in your life. Is it a lack of contentment to seek a higher paying job or a bigger house? Explain. 8. Pray together about these five areas where we called to live out a joy-filled life. Ask the Lord to reveal ways in which He wants you to be more aware of these things in your daily lives.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS 1. What did you find most encouraging from this message? What was the most challenging? 2. What are your most and least favorite things about the Christmas season? 3. Discuss what you believe this quote by John MacArthur means: “Joy is the flag that flies on the castle of the heart when the King is in residence there.” 4. Read and discuss Philippians 2:12-13. How does obedience contribute to a journey of “working out” joy in our lives? 5. Read and discuss Philippians 1:3-6. The first point in cultivating joy is “practicing the art of remembering.” When you think about the memories of your journey through life in Christ, what rises to the surface as your strongest memories along the way? What deserves a more prominent place in the “process of remembering”? Are there things that create strong memories that need to be processed through and submitted to the Lord in order to reduce their influence? 6. The second point in cultivating joy is “focusing prayer on the needs of others.” Discuss your level of effectiveness in being able to focus more on the needs of others in prayer than on yourself. 7. The third point in cultivating joy is “partnering with others in the Body of Christ.” Discuss how your connections through your shepherd group cultivate joy. Are there ways your group can do better in partnering together in life? 8. The fourth point in cultivating joy is “living with the end in mind.” Do you find the notion of life in eternity encouraging to you? Why or why not? What do you think is getting in the way of that thought being more encouraging than it is? 9. Spend some time in prayer over these four points and ask the Lord to help each of us to take steps in cultivating joy.
