Incredible people, incredible stories

“At least we will remove him from this Hell…” with these words, Germinal Luis Fernandez’s parents decided to send him, aged 8, to the USA to escape the civil war in Spain and war in Europe. Germinal spent much of his subsequent life in exile and in this collection, you can experience his story in his own words alongside the incredible stories of other Spanish emigres.

This is a collection of interviews and other related research data which has been collected for a research project on migration by Dr Alicia Pozo-Gutierrez, in Modern Languages, within the Faculty of Humanities. You can hear the amazing stories of four Spanish emigres in raw interview footage, and read the accompanying ethnographic notes, transcript and English synopsis. There is also a guide to how this material could be used for reference, learning or language practice.

All materials are licensed as open educational resources, so they can be downloaded and used for educational purposes. This collection of interviews is related to the iTunes collection ‘Research skills for oral history.’ [Thumbnail image courtesy of the University of Southampton library].
