Mexican cartel operatives are known as “ambassadors” on the ground in Colombia, and are now an increasing source of much of the violence, instability, and rural displacement, far from the borders of their own country.”

The militarized, prohibition-based international Drug War has led to nothing but violence, suffering, and enrichment of criminal groups, politicians, and business interests. Colombia’s version of a Truth & Reconciliation Commission (La Comisión de la Verdad), established following the 2016 FARC peace accords that ostensibly ended the country’s 60-plus-year armed internal conflict, through thousands of interviews and document reviews, recently published a final report with findings & recommendations which included as one of its main points that the Drug War has only prolonged and intensified the conflict, and must end immediately.

In this episode of the Gone Native podcast, I sit down with Lina Yucumá to talk about the results of the 2022 presidential election in Colombia, her thoughts and feelings about Gustavo Petro, ex-M19 guerrilla and ousted one-time mayor of Bogotá, being elected president.
She has some unorthodox opinions about Petro, which basically boil down to, “I don’t like it, but it happened, now let’s wait and see”, which is more or less how I felt about the election of Donald Trump in the United States. And look how that turned out! To be fair, I felt the same way about Obama AND Biden.
