In addition to striking down affirmative action in college admissions, the Supreme Court has also struck down a number of other rulings in recent years that have been seen as beneficial to minority groups. These rulings include:
Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia (2020): The Court ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, also prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Rucho v. Common Cause (2019): The Court ruled that federal courts do not have the power to strike down partisan gerrymandering, which is the practice of drawing electoral districts in a way that gives one political party an unfair advantage.Shelby County v.
Holder (2013): The Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which required certain states with a history of racial discrimination to obtain preclearance from the federal government before making changes to their voting laws.

In this episode of "Real Talk and Conversation" for my first in-person studio audience here in Atlanta, GA we welcomed R&B turned Gospel Singer Mr. Kennis Clark. Born and bred in Long Island, New York, Kennis Clark is a singer-songwriter making music for the soul. Originally getting his start in R&B and Hip-Hop music groups, Kennis’ solo career began in 2014 when he drove cross-country to California in pursuit of a purpose-driven music career. Kennis gained recognition for his Pop singles Good Body, Forever, and Bout Time before crossing over to release his strikingly refreshing take on Christian Contemporary and Electronic through his EP titled AWOL. Kennis later partnered with YouTube Studios and TBN’s Juce TV to shoot the music video to his hit CCM record Close Up.
Kennis’ work has led to background appearances such as on NBC’s hit series “The Voice” and in Kanye West’s infamous Sunday Service. He has also made contributions outside of his vocal performances, participating as a panelist at the BET Experience and in multiple TV and radio appearances where he sheds light on the underlying passion behind his music.
Kennis and his family reside in Atlanta where he continues to create music to inspire, motivate, and change listeners around the globe.

Treon Young, out of Greenville, Mississippi, is a self-taught DJ and CEO of the fashion and lifestyle clothing line Country Bumkin. In October 2016, Young debuted 10 original T-shirts emblazoned with his own designs to gauge interest in an urban fashion line. All 10 shirts sold the same day, and with this encouragement, Young decided to pursue the idea. 10 years later Tre and his friend and business partner Uncle Ray now have a storefront in the heart of Atlanta in Atlanta Station. Britain has seen record-breaking heat for the past couple of days with temperatures reaching 104 F whereas last year around the same time it was a high of 101 F. Britain also experienced the warmest night ever on record. Next door in France's southwestern region they're continuing to see wildfires spreading across 27000 acres and with fires there comes displacement of residents because they have to flee from their homes. In Portugal, they are facing wildfires as well with more than 650 have died from the soaring temperatures.

In this episode of “Real Talk and Conversation with Today’s Candidate” I welcome on my guest GA Secretary of State Candidate Manswell Peterson. Manswell is a native of Albany, Georgia, and a product of the Dougherty County School System. He attended Albany State University and Troy University obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. During this time at Albany State University, he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in Spring 2001. Manswell served in the United States Navy during the first war in Desert Storm and is now a disabled Veteran. He also formerly served as a Senior Corporal and Supervisor for the Albany Police Department. Following his time in military and law enforcement careers, he was a Professor at Darton State College in Albany teaching courses in Criminal Justice and Homeland Security. He has authored over 20 books and writes movies and television shows.
Manswell currently lives in Albany with his wife and youngest son. His wife, LaTonya, is a professor teaching online Criminal Justice courses at American Intercontinental University. She is also a community volunteer, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Manswell’s oldest son is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Chemistry.
As a member of Greater 2nd Mount Olive Baptist Church in Albany, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Manswell is dedicated to the service of others. He truly believes he can make the changes Georgians need.

In this episode of “On the Couch” I welcome back my Emily Leslie to talk about a heated issue, people are really afraid to touch. What’s the issue you ask about the trouble between Israel and Palestine. The word Palestine derives from the Greek word, Philistia, which dates to Ancient Greek writers' descriptions of the region in the 12th century B.C. From the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I to 1948, Palestine typically referred to the geographic region located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. Arab people who call this territory home have been known as Palestinians since the early 20th century. Throughout history, Palestine has been ruled by numerous groups, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Fatimids, Seljuk Turks, Crusaders, Egyptians, and Mamelukes. When World War I ended in 1918, the British took control of Palestine. The League of Nations issued a British mandate for Palestine—a document that gave Britain administrative control over the region and included provisions for establishing a Jewish national homeland in Palestine—which went into effect in 1923. In 1947, after more than two decades of British rule, the United Nations proposed a plan to partition Palestine into two sections: an independent Jewish state and an independent Arab state. The city of Jerusalem, which was claimed as a capital by both Jews and Palestinian Arabs, was to be an international territory with a special status.

Happy Women’s History month, so we just left Black History month I guess it is no longer important in some people’s eyes as we approach the new universe of Women’s month which started off as Women’s History Week. Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year.

In this discussion about Stone Mountain Park and the push to remove confederacy branding from the park itself. For those of you who aren’t from the great state of Georgia, Stone Mountain is a mountain located near the city of Stone Mountain, Georgia. It’s a family park with family attractions, which have been most recently added over the past 10 years, and a historical landmark that depicts three Confederate leaders, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. Joining Tamika, and me, on this discussion is Brian Morris a man that has done his research who is working alongside “The Stone Mountain Action Coalition” in getting streets renamed in the park that’s named after these confederate leaders and having the confederate flagged removed before we the people go after those carvings and put up some true winners.

In today’s episode, Tamika and I are going to talk rights as a consumer to speak more on terms of service. TOS has been put in the spotlight again due to major tech companies kicking 45 off of their platforms and the community is calling foul, even some on the left. The reasoning is that if tech companies silenced 45 and his first amendment rights then eventually it will be done to everyone else soon. What is TOS (Terms of Service)? Basically, terms of service are legal agreements between a service provider and a person who wants to use that service they’re offering. The person, and/or end-user, must agree to abide by the terms of service in order to use the offered service. In this segment of “Real Talk and Conversation with Today’s Candidates” I am talking with former Candidate for Gwinnett Sheriff Floyd Scott. In these heightened times of tension with police, it was only befitting to bring on a candidate who was running to represent Gwinnett County as Sheriff and who is also a retired police officer to discuss his opinions on what’s taking place and to talk about his run for office. Floyd’s passion for law enforcement started as a teenager. What inspired him to get into law enforcement was an encounter he had when he was younger with a police officer which lead to something positive and the officer letting him and his friends go with some life lessons to take away from it. From that point on Floyd knew he wanted to serve and protect and put himself in a position to not only help the community but also serve as a leader for his country. He joined the military and retired honorably but the next step in life came at now moving into being an asset to the community through law enforcement. Floyd served 40 years in law enforcement and with his experience and knowledge, he decided it was time to run for office and work towards changing things at the top in Gwinnett County. I want to thank him again by joining me on this program to talk about his experience and hopefully have him back to talk about the steps going forward and how we can create a better relationship as a community with law enforcement officers.

In this week’s episode of The Road to Black Economic Development we’re going to talk about Positioning Yourself for Greatness during the pandemic. Joining me back on this episode is my co-host Tamika Day. When we look at how this pandemic has affected an individual’s household it really has affected some of us that were comfortable and complacent in our jobs and our lives. With the unemployment rate expected to hit nearly 20%, with 20.5 million jobs lost in April and millions more to be shown in May data.
How could you, or I, have positioned ourselves to survive a storm such as this and/or what are the steps going forward? Yes, we’ve added more jobs back but at what cost and is the industry you work in one of the sectors adding in new jobs? We’ve seen jobs added back in “Leisure and Hospitality”, “Construction”, “Education and Health Services”, “Retail Trade”, “Financial Activities”, “Other Services”, “Manufacturing”, “Professional and Business Services” etc, etc, etc. Whereas the jobs we are losing come from “Government”, “Information”, “Mining and Logging” and “Transportation and Warehousing”.
Most of the new jobs barely pay the cost of living while a number of them that pay well only added in a small overall percentage with the loss of work in those sectors being in the millions. So what’s the plan and what can you tackle to help in mitigating your loss because I understand if people aren’t working then they aren’t spending and thus companies aren’t making money but I have seen where even the companies not making money are also paying out millions to executives, therefore, that should be a clear reminder that if you’re a worker bee you aren’t important to those up top, sorry.

I’m giving my Co-Host a break on this episode because I want to do a brief history lesson to those who don’t know about Juneteenth, don’t worry she’ll be back as we move into a topic on real estate and land ownership to hand down to the next generation and how we were denied that which further set us back in generational wealth. In this episode, I’m going to venture off a little and talk about what started the Road of Progression and that’s going back to the beginning June 19th, 1865. Enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas were told they were free 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and that’s partially due to Texas having minimal Union Troops there to enforce the new Executive Order. With the surrender of General Lee in April 1865 and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, forces were finally able to overcome the resistance.
That point alone is baffling to me in trying to understand how individuals who will tell Mexicans that they lost the war and just get over it because their land was taking away from them are the same ones who celebrate the Confederacy and their heritage even though they themselves lost and celebrate a terrorist faction. Yes to go against the government in order to fight for your own personal belief is a form of terrorism. If you don’t know please read into how Mexico initially owned present-day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico until President James K. Polk decided he wanted to take it away from them. So yeah “Make America Great Again” right but let’s get back to Juneteenth.
Even after being free families had no-where to go but felt as though freedom was better than staying on a plantation. Now in my opinion I believe slaves should have been given land just as whites were when they broke their agreement with native tribes and stole land from them. If slaves can help build a community then a community should have been established that was given to them. Never-the-less with no destination in mind, some headed North because it represented true freedom to them. When it comes to festivities and celebrating Juneteenth there was a traditional set of activities that we all partake in today such as barbecuing, baseball, etc. Now per history, it says there were rodeos but being from the South I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a rodeo at one of our celebrations lol but that’s not to say it didn’t happen in earlier times because I do know some black horse riders.
The biggest thing I like is that during almost all celebrations education played a major part and so did self-improvement; guest speakers and elders would be called out to drop knowledge on historical events and things of the past. Prayer services were a major part as well as we believed if it was for our religious beliefs we don’t know how we could have made it out of our troubles.
Dressing up was another part of celebrating Juneteenth because laws were put into place prohibiting slaves from being dressed up so of course after emancipation some slaves tossed their old garments into the river and adorned the clothing of their former masters. That right there is something in itself is asinine, who creates a law to tell someone they can’t dress up. I mean can you imagine but with all the Karen’s and Tom’s causing so much confusion bothering people where they live, while sitting by the pool, cooking out in a park, accusing babies of groping them, or just getting mad because they think you’re guilty of something I can believe just that.
A resurgence of the celebration of Juneteenth is coming back with institutions like the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum amongst others sponsoring Juneteenth centered activities.

In last weeks episode, we discussed education in school where we need better training for our teachers on how to properly handle our kids and deal with those who come from broken environments, dealing with children suffering from PTSD due to poor conditions or growing up with parents dealing with generational curses, and zero tolerance mostly affecting brown children. As we continue this discussion the Road to Black Economic Development let’s look at another avenue and that is money. When it comes to finances it is something that affects us all. That has become clearer doing this time with the pandemic because it has exposed our most vulnerable point and that is having a reliable steady income. With over 30 million-plus still collecting unemployment, the one thing we have to discuss is the path forward and what could have been some of our best practices to prepare us for this storm. We’re told by leadership we should have over 2 years' worth of income saved but most companies don’t even pay the cost of living so Americans are having to seek out other means to bring more into the house. The problem with that is time costs money and money can mean a lot of things in the household such as time with kids, investing time with your spouse or private life, working on projects that you love doing, etc. So joining me again is Tamika Day as we dive deep into this topic and work towards understanding a Road to Black Economic Development.

Throughout history, we can see how Black Americans in the Great United States of America have been treated. We can unequivocally determine that through policies created we were disproportionately affected from lack of wealth, as others ran forward, we had ropes pulling us back the harder we tried to catch up. Our communities thus became our only safe haven until it wasn’t anymore due to outside interferences that don’t like the fact that we even exist as a people. I know that statement in itself is harsh, but it can be said through the actions of all those in charge since the “Emancipation Proclamation” in 1862 which went into effect in 1863. Black Americans had Jim Crow laws created against them as a deterrent to prevent them from getting ahead.
There were a select few who built wealth through the Jim Crow era such as Bernard Garret, an African American born and raised in the South who understood the surest path to improving conditions for black Americans was by achieving economic freedom (Clark, 2020). We should understand that it did not come easy, and it’s known that starting a business is not easy but when you have racial discrimination working against you it makes the path that much harder, know that before you preach “Make America Great Again”. Let’s discuss the reality where a lot of this began and that is in education or the lack thereof.
Sir Francis Bacon once said that “Knowledge is Power” (Bacon, 1996). Discouraging Blacks to learn dates back to the 1800s with North Carolina passing a law that forbade teaching slaves to read and write, stating that literacy has a “tendency to excite dissatisfaction in their minds and to produce insurrection and rebellion to the manifest injury of the citizens of this state” (Sneed, 2014). The lack of knowledge will lead you down a path of destruction because a person can’t see an outlet and acts in a way representing what they’ve been exposed to. Without true knowledge you act to the knowledge that you witness on a daily basis and in some Black communities, it’s that of violence and civil unrest. In most cases that can come with great progress if there is an understanding of what happens afterward. In the circumstances where there are no plans, the only outcome is that of leftover destructions and us left to rebuild until the next time. Toni Gordon Roberts is a Life Member 1471 of Sigma Gamma Rho and a candidate for Southeastern Region Undergraduate Chapter Coordinator, 2020-2022.
She was inducted into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated at Lane College, Alpha Gamma Chapter, on March 26, 1995. Currently, Toni serves as the Georgia Area Coordinator, a QPR Trainer, a TORCH trainer, a member of the Disciplinary Action Committee, and the Southeastern Region Chaplain Committee. Toni is a member of the Iota Zeta Sigma Alumnae Chapter, where she’s served as the local Basileus, Anti-Basileus, Grammateus, and Anti-Grammateus.
She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, cum laude from Lane College, and a Paralegal Certification from Georgia State University. Stay tuned for the interview coming up.
