The seventy came back rejoicing. They had gone out two by two. They had preached, served, witnessed, healed, and watched the power of God work in front of their eyes. They had seen things most of us have only read about. They came back with the kind of excitement that fills a man when he knows God has used him. They said, "Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name." That was not a small thing. That was not a light report. But Jesus stepped into their joy and lifted it higher. He said, "Notwithstanding in this rejoice not... but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven." The Lord was not saying, "Do not rejoice at all." Trials are not interruptions to the Christian life. They are instruments within it. The text does not say "if ye fall." It says "when ye fall." This removes uncertainty. Trials are certain, varied, and unavoidable. "Divers temptations" refers to multi-coloured, multi-layered pressuresβfinancial strain, relational conflict, physical weakness, ministry burden, internal struggle. Solomon possessed nearly everything the natural heart believes will make life meaningful: wealth, authority, education, achievement, influence, and pleasure. He entered the laboratory of human experience and tested whether meaning could be found in knowledge, labour, wealth, reputation, or power. Again and again, his answer was that life pursued merely "under the sun" is "vanity and vexation of spirit."

Scripture does not adjust to cultural drift. It confronts it. Paul writes, "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity." These are five clear commands. "Watch ye" means stay awake and alert. "Stand fast in the faith" means remain anchored in revealed truth. "Quit you like men" is old English meaning, "Conduct yourselves like men." "Act like a man" "Be strong" means that weakness is not a virtue when God has commanded strength. Then verse 14 supplies the guardrail: "Let all your things be done with charity." Biblical masculinity is not cruelty, intimidation, uncontrolled anger, or selfish domination. A biblical man is: strong without being cruel; loving without being passive; firm without being harsh tender without surrendering conviction authoritative without becoming arrogant. June is recognised as Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. In many ways, that is a good thing. For generations, men were often taught to suppress struggles, hide burdens, and carry pressures in silence. As a result, many suffered alone. The growing awareness surrounding mental health has encouraged important conversations that need to take place. Yet there is also a danger. The danger is that modern discussions often focus almost exclusively on the symptoms while neglecting the deeper issues beneath them. We speak about anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, discouragement, and emotional exhaustionβand we should. These are real struggles experienced by real people. But if all we do is identify symptoms without addressing purpose, hope, identity, meaning, and spiritual realities, then we have merely described the problem without helping people find lasting answers. The world often offers management techniques. Scripture offers transformation. The world tells us to look inward. God repeatedly points us upward. He begins with the work of the Spirit within us, then transitions to the witness of adoption, and then lifts the eyes of the believer to future glory: *Romans 8:18 "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." Paul then expands the scope. Creation groans. The believer groans. Even the Spirit groans. All of creation is in anticipationβwaiting for something that has not yet been revealed. Scripture commands contentment. Culture manufactures discontent. Hebrews 13:5 addresses both behaviour and condition. "Conversation" refers to manner of life. This is not limited to speechβit is lifestyle. "Without covetousness"βthis is the removal of desire for what has not been given. Covetousness is not possession. It is craving. "Be content with such things as ye have"βthis is not passive acceptance. It is active satisfaction. The reason follows: "for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
