GUMI: Maor Hasbani from Tel Aviv is the man behind the new promising electronic project, Gumi.
In the late 90's Maor stumbled upon the electronic side of music, 1st in the more classic genres including Rock, Progressive, Jazz & Fusion.
A Few years later Maor began his long a fruitful career in the local psychedelic trance scene, pretty much in all levels...from production to promotion...
Just by understanding the title word Gumi, meaning elastic, gives us the expectation to a flexible fluent atmosphere of sounds, and surely the result is such. A project with a mix of a new eastern oriented music, not in an obvious way, but rather in a creative blend of clubby style, bold analogue baselines that convey a warm feeling contrasted by 303 acid lines. Diverse, Tribal with ethnic drops.
Elastic sounds with a gloomy psy touch and old school analogue sounds. Beautiful melodies in well-told stories. Maor Hasbani is putting up a terrific blend of fused styles into a strong concept with endearing storytelling.

Rumpistol: “Rum” is a Danish word for space, room or reverb. For Danish composer Rumpistol, two huge driving forces behind his music are the search for beauty and the search for new sounds.
These sonic and aesthetic curiosities, which can be firmly traced back to his self-titled 2003 debut, now considered a bit of an IDM classic, have taken him to many diverse fields of the electronic landscape.
His melodic yet spaced-out music is often hard to categorize and he's capable of doing anything from pure ambient sets, over groovy midtempo sets to energetic tech sets as well. Always 100% original material and always with a distinct live element.
Rumpistol has performed his detailed sound across Europe, US, Mexico & Brazil including venues like Boiler Room UK and MUTEK Montreal. Apart from producing under the name Rumpistol, he also creates scores for film, theatre & contemporary dance.
His music was used at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics in Rio 2016 and in 2017 he won a Danish Music Award Jazz for the album “Masala” with his band Kalaha.
Since 2003 he has run the label Rump Recordings, showcasing mainly Danish electronic artists through a release span of more than 35 releases but he has also released on the renowned Berlin-based label Project Mooncircle, and Danish Iboga Records.
Rumpistol has gained wide acknowledgement from people like John Peel (UK) and Laurent Garnier (F) to Om Unit (UK) & Tipper (UK) whom he shared stages with twice in 2017.

Hedflux is the main music project of Scottish-born DJ/Producer Steve Young. A life-long electronic music enthusiast, Steve has been spinning in clubs and festivals since before he was legally allowed to enter them. Starting out in the early 90s golden era of rave, he went from old-school breaks to nu-skool breaks via happy hardcore and drum & bass, spending all his money on turntables, mixers and vinyl while changing his DJ name more often than his underwear.
In the early naughties, he developed a naughty relationship with psychedelic trance. Inspired by its smooth curves, other-worldly atmospheres, and an unrivalled ability to produce kaleidoscopic visions in the 3rd eye, he endeavoured to step up his production game and synthesize the ultimate heady dance music hybrid: psychedelic breaks!
The debut Hedflux track "Music Is My Weapon" was released in 2008 and this set the archetypal template for the next 5 years of music, during which time he released more than 30 records and performed across the UK, Europe, Australia and America.

Hibernation is Seb Taylors outlet for Glitchy experimental chilled Electronica. The first Hibernation album, Some Things Never Change, was released on respected label Aleph Zero in 2008. At this point Seb had released a number of Kaya Project albums to great acclaim and gained a loyal following among downtempo aficionados. With many different projects to his name Seb likes to keep them stylistically distinct and Hibernation is devoted to a more electronic realm than Kaya Project, which features live instrumentation from around the world. Hibernation, as the name suggests, heads inwards and locks onto micro edits, quirky samples, glitches and hyper-fine details. Second Nature is the newest album and was released on Interchill Records in 2012. On this album, Natasha Chamberlain contributes some dreamy vocal flourishes to a number of tunes and Seb also turned to the capable Riad Abji and Vicky Flint for stand up bass and muted trumpet in the signature tune Uncarved Block. With a distinct sonic palette that includes stand up bass, muted trumpet, brush drums, glitches, whomps and warm subs the Hibernation sound is crucial listening. Seb brings a lifetime of musical experience to his production, composition and arrangements, and it shows. Listening to Second Nature conjures up future memories of dark smoky jazz clubs, Bladerunner cityscapes, parallel universes, dreams half-forgotten and epic nights. This is music with spirit, narrative and detail.

For nearly two decades, Amani Friend has been at the helm of the global-electronic project Liquid Bloom. Feeling equally at home on the international festival dance circuit, in the yoga studio, and in the more subtle sonic spaces reserved for intentional ceremonies guided by ancient allies, the wide-ranging artist collective under the umbrella of the Liquid Bloom project spans distance, time, and dimensions of the mind.
As one half of Desert Dwellers, Amani brings his dance floor guidance and experience to harness a deeper, transportive journey, giving as much weight to calm and the serene as to the ecstatic groove. As founder of Liquid Bloom, he has guided the project through its many lives, and its many rebirths at the hands of remixers AtYyA, Hedflux, Numatik, and Mose to name a few. Joining Amani on stage and in the studio is one-man looping orchestra Poranguí, whose own globe-trotting journey has made his musical upbringing as varied as the instruments he lays before him. A Liquid Bloom performance with the Brazilian-born, U.S.-based artist sees him bounce between didgeridoo, kalimba, and vocals with ease, as he celebrates percussion and instruments from around the world in a dizzying collection.
The Liquid Bloom experience unfolds in a multitude of incarnations. Amani is able to craft deep, entrancing journeys during his solo DJ sets. As a duo, Amani and Poranguí are able to balance and weave the organic and the electronic within their performances. With multi-instrumentalists, singers, and performers like Kaminanda, Deya Dova, Shamans Dream, and Ixchel Prisma, the Liquid Bloom live band springs to life, bringing the catalogue into view through an entirely different lens and bursting with a vibrancy and depth of artistic harmony.

Zen Baboon are Daniel Rosado and Henrique Palhavã. Both were born in the '70s in Portugal and since an early age kept a close connection with the musical world, focusing on great sound quality and original construction.
Daniel is a sound engineer that worked in a studio in Lisbon and started producing electronic music in the late 90′s. Henrique, a zoologist, lives and works in his own farm and started as an ambient DJ, (DJ Henriq) and producer in 2001.
They got together in 2003 and decided to melt their musical preferences and create Zen Baboon.

LAB is a portuguese producer that takes dark music into the realm of sci-fi and experimentalism. He is the latest addition to our exciting Boom Radio podcast series!
Who are you and when did you start making music? I started producing back in 1998, first in genres like house, lounge and breakbeat, and only a few years after in 2004 i started with Psytrance.
How do you describe the LAB sound? LAB sound is atmospheric , hypnotic and strong , with some glimpses of light . Every track has a different story, that is something mandatory in the production !
What are your main influences to produce your music? I am influenced by many things, but i would say sci-fi movies and roleplaying games have great impact on my music. Of course i am also influenced by many artists i like, some of them are not Psytrance but they still influence how the production goes.
What is your favorite equipment to create the LAB sound? The favorite equipment would definitely be the Nord-Modular, a monster machine that can achieve amazing and infinite results, although i use many more, like Korg Ms-2000r, Roland Sonic Cell, Yamaha TG-33 and every piece of hardware i can put my hands on!!
What is your dream in life? My dream in life… is to live only for the music. Unfortunately that is not possible yet, but i’m a positive person and i believe i’ll get there someday, i’ll never stop trying! Playing one day at Boom Festival is of course a part of this dream, and it could definitely help to achieve the ultimate goal.

You are a Brazilian living in the UK. When did you move there and why? Yes I am Brazilian living in London and i moved there begin of 2003 because i had to finish my university and i went there to study and to get to know the English culture better.
Psy-trance nowadays is a vast musical world. Where do you place yourself in terms of DJ style? I’m a psy trance lover I like all the kinds of psy trance, not much progressive. i prefer to play a full on day time psy-trance, not very fast, more groove and funky.
What makes a good psytrance dance floor? A good psy-trance dance floor for me is made with a strong beats not much breaks and a straight bass line. Plus, a great soul!
Brazil marked an era of our scene, with huge parties and many artists performing there for vast audiences. It seems those days have passed. Though, there’s still a lot of great talent coming from there… Yes, from 2002 till later 2009 Brazil got very famous for his huge parties and massive crowds but these days isn’t like that anymore. The house and electro took over all the clubs and outdoors parties and the crowd isn’t the same and also there isn’t no more few big parties every weekend.
What are the producers to watch from your country? Brazil always been a country with many new coming artists in all kind of electronic music since i have moved to London my style got a bit more serious than when i used to live in Brazil. For me the new psy-trance producers from Brazil to be watched are Stereo Plug, kronic and Mental Broadcast .
Final question, what can we expect from you for the following months? Right now I’m living in Brazil since October 2009, moving back to London in April. Looking forward for a special gig at Transahara Festival which happening during the Easter time in Morocco, and I have an EP coming up in 2011 in some label probably Spun records the old and promised label is coming up with full power this year. www.myspace.com/djdigoa

Finally, what is the main approach you have to the Journey sound? I always approach my production sessions looking for different sounds, changing key and using different layers to create my collage, a psychedelic collage. I avoid using the same presets, never use the same patterns and in this way feel more creativbe and happy with my results.

You are connected with a creative hub in Camden, London, called inSpiral. What is your main activity over there? The InSpiral lounge in Camden is a lovely venue with a very special vibe. I am the event manager and responsible for most of the bookings and creative offerings, of which there are many. I also get on the decks from time to time, but in general feel more comfortable in my role as organiser rather than artist. We are also a fundamental part of Glade festival and are considered by many to be one of the best chill out spaces on the festival scene, where we have a significant presence at several events. How and when did your musical career start? My DJ career started at Glastonbury festival in 2003, I was asked to play an afternoon chill out set in ID Spiral. It got me into the role of DJ and inspired me to broaden my musical horizons and obsessively seek out new tunes. I played a few smaller gigs in the next year which led to other bookings and in 2004 played ID Spiral at Glastonbury on saturday night, which was a major breakthrough gig for me. It just keeps getting better and I love it.
As a DJ, how do you consider yourself in terms of music approach? I love music and believe in content before style. I try to be not be too linear in genre specification and look for timelessness in music more than a passing style that will have disappeared in 6 months time. I like to introduce accessible psychedelic and groovy elements in my DJ sets and have a feeling for fusing the genres on the road less travelled. The mix I have done for the Boom podcast demonstrates musicality and production technique being held together with groove and a consistent good vibe.
With so much music being made nowadays which genres and/or artists do you consider as the most innovative to come out? When I play a techno set, I strive for a groovy sound that is also deep and psychedelic. A few artists who spring to mind are Gui Boratto, Butch, D-Nox, Beckers, James Holden, Alex Kenji, Robert Babicz. In the world of eclectic downtempo/midtempo electronica I would say the artists who are really paving the way into new territory, while maintaining a musical integrity, that will most likely stand the test of time are:

With so much software being released for the sake of DJs, do you think next generation DJs will lose completely the ability to listen to vinyl, CD and other music platforms, besides digital DJing outlets? I would much prefer to see a DJ waving CDs and vinyl around than looking at a computer screen unless what is happening is really a “Live set”. Looking through a CD case for the perfect selection is much more being a part of the dance floor process than someone looking at a screen that comes between the DJ and the dance floor. I appreciate that there are some nice effects that can be achieved with digital DJing outlets but I hope that upcoming DJs continue with hands-on traditional techniques of mixing.
You played at the last Boom and you have been traveling the world to perform your music. From your perspective, what makes a good festival? A good festival can be felt in the intent of the core organizers. Care for the people with good facilities and an understanding of music and energy are essential ingredients for people from around the world to come together in celebration.
Finally, what type of music do you listen mostly while in your home? I like to keep up with what is hot and surf Beatport frequently for what I like in techno/progressive house/minimal/tech-house. Fortunately, I have a lot of good friends who are producers, so I often get an insiders preview. For work I am often listening to promos, demos and DJ mixes. Hi Jahbo. Please introduce yourself for the benefit of those who don’t know you! My full name is Rølike Jahbo Odgaard Bunzendahl and I was born in 1981. I play and produce under the name Jahbo. My parents are hippies and I grew up with them and my brother and sister in the North of Denmark, where today there still is located a free “society” called Thy lejren. When I was 10 we moved near Aarhus where I am located today. I started going to parties at the end of 97 in Aarhus and was hooked at once! The nice parties at that time were held among others by Giuseppe from Parvati Records and friends under the name of “Instant Karma”. At this point I started to spend a lot of time to collect and trade music with psy-trance freaks all over the planet. Around 99 I decided to try and make my own music and I started to study music production and sequencing at a school here in Aarhus. Since then, besides my regular job, I’ve been making music and travelling around to a lot of nice places on our planet! I hope to continue the journey, there are still much places and people to see, experiences to have and music to deliver, out there!
You’ve been connected with the most night approach of psytrance. What are the main traits of differences between the approaches to dark and morning music, for instance? Oh… thats a dangerous question (laughs). Well you can always generalize genres, like we all do with genres that we are not really excited about. But the important thing in psy-trance for me is the psychedelic aspect. And I always tend to find the most psychedelic experiences in so called “dark trance”. Though, to be honest I never thought or intended to do “dark” trance I and I still don’t think I make that! To be harsh and generalize morning trance a bit, which is somewhat the most popular genre, it is made in a “pop” concept for a lot of the time and the boundaries of ideas and sounds are tighter then in “dark trance”. In the dark genre I feel that people are more open minded towards sound, choice and experiments. Last I would say that I feel actually that the “dark” genre is now also somehow moving towards “pop”, and here I also see the standard productions more and more. I dont know if it’s bad or if I’m completely wrong? I try to open towards morning and other genres of trance, but still my place is the “dark” trance…. We are all different and we like different things. And that is somehow the most important thing here in the world I think, to be different! “Normality” is what i fear!
Do you use different production methods for each of your aliases or collaborations? I don’t have specific methods or concepts for my various projects. When I do music it is mostly all from scratch, with a few ideas in my head. From here I just see where the track and sounds take my mind to, and work on from there. It is the same when I do collaborations, I try to absorb and understand the ideas and energies from the other producer. A good track in collaboration is the sum of all involved! I always forget to make presets, so I kinda start from the beginning every time!
Who are the most influential psytrance artists for you and why? In trance music, in the old days I was really seduced by the Finnish, Scandinavian and Australian sounds. Artist like Texas Faggott, Little Blue Men, Hux Flux, Visitors, Rip Van Hippie, etc. Later it was the early GMS, Lotus Omega, System Busters, Paps, Tripiatrik and then again the wave of Droidsect/Digital Talk and the artist of Aarhus and Russia. Nowadays I still listen and sometimes play all the old tracks. New music I enjoy all the projects from Aarhus and all the new Scandinavian sounds from Sanaton Records, Yggdrasil, Cosmic Theatre among others and a lot of the new German and East European sounds are also very interesting. Other music I grew up with – all kinds of 60´s hippies music and I still love and listen to it often. Bob Marley, Jimmy Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, etc. Reggae is my everyday music and it always makes me happy as well as inspires me over and over again.
You’re originally from Denmark. How would you say it’s impacted you, your music, your attitudes to life? Well being from Denmark is not too bad… Denmark is a nice place and a quite easy place to live your life. We had a good generation of hippies in the 60´s and one which created a big “room” in the society for creativity. Today it is like all places getting smaller, but we defenitely had a good wave there which kept evolving towards now. I grew up in a hippie society, and in some way it has affected me in the way that I feel very open toward new experiences and quite suspect towards “Normalization”. (laughs) Denmark is not perfect at all and the high value of general welfare is not healthy for the creativity of people, and I feel the government´s goal like all other governments today is to normalize us all, so it will be easier to run the company! (laughs) Just a short detour there… but it is my spaced out idea of whats happening around us. That said I would still not complain, I love my life here, and I have what i need. Denmark is full of great energies and good people. And a great place for underground cultures and music in general.
How did you hook up with Parvati and what are the main ideas you share with the label? As earlier said Giuseppe (Parvati Records), he is original from Italy, and lived in Aarhus for many many years. He and friends held most of the parties I attended when starting my psy-trance journey. Aarhus is not a big city, so we all kinda know each other. When he started the label we knew about it and he knew all the artists making music in the city. So we got in contact and from there on our friendship started and now after many years we’re all very close and connected in the Parvati family.
What advice would you give to new producers and where is the future of production taking the bedroom producer? Today music creation is technical and so much easier then before. You can start making music with just your computer, where in the past you needed quite a bigger setup. So I think that new artist gets much faster to the point of good production. But it is very important to remember the musical approach to trance and not forget that it’s still hard to make good and creative music. Rock on… but try to create something new and not to copy and keep going further, don’t be satisfied with the easiest.
You’ll be playing at the next Boom. From your perspective, what makes a good festival? Festivals, like Boom, are great because you meet so many other people that have the same sort of idea of life and are open to different ways of life. Even if we like different styles in trance (morning, dark, full on etc). We are all trance! And that is amazing to experience. And besides all the trance freaks, I think today’s trance festivals are attracting most of modern day hippies. Which I Love! It is cosmic connection.
Tell us something about your approach to this mix that we are releasing in Boom Radio? My mix contains besides a few of my own productions, some of the newest Parvati Records tracks as well as tracks from Yggdrasil Records. It is hard to fit all your favorite tracks into 1 hour set. So in the end I decided just to express my mood of a Tuesday night… I hope you enjoy!

For the last few years he has been regarded as one of the most talented DJs around, always incorporating other influences into his unique psy-trance approach.
The new Mindstream podcast is based on live recordings from Sinergia Summer Camp, held in July, where Dimitri made a DJ set based on the idea of fusing full-on psy-trance and other music genres. We had an interesting interview with him about the present state of psy-trance and how the whole scene can evolve into a higher standard of quality.
You’ve been a DJ that has been imposing his own style and charisma. Why did you feel the need to release the album “Ininterrupted” recently? I should have done it 2 years ago already in fact, but I was too caught up flying all over the place and gigging. I had started the production and recording process nearly 2 years ago. But I do feel it’s a good time to release… there doesn’t seem to be that many releases in trance at the moment, especially not in the area of full on that stand out from the rest of the music available, so hopefully the timing is good.
In dance music there is always the need for DJs to produce and vice-versa so that both careers can reinforce each other. Is that record a way for you to underline your production skills or is it simply a record with tracks by someone that feels himself more a DJ than a producer? I definitely identify myself more as a DJ than a producer but this is changing I guess. The trance scene is famous for respecting producers a whole lot more than DJs so in a way I did need to prove myself, to myself and especially to the scene. There is a lot of scepticism around that dictates that a DJ is simply a DJ, but when you look back, or outside the scene, one can see that so much of the electronic music scene relies on DJ’s. And yet trance won’t recognize this so I created an album of my own music to express the fact that one relies on the other and neither are mutually exclusive.
As a producer did you want to show new directions for full on psy-trance? Apart from wanting to do an album of tracks to play myself and for others to play, I was also consciously trying to add some different flavours, make the music a bit different within the style/formula that is full on these days. As we all know full on is quite lost ideas-wise, we don’t get to hear much music that is surprising or different. Many people have jumped to make techno, progressive and minimal which I think is great but once again we see it isn’t changing trance very much. And it’s a shame no one brings influences from outside the scene, always listening to full on to inspire full on, which never works in the long run. So I had been out and about trying to get as many musical ideas from other genres and trying to fuse that with trance techniques, which I did. I broke quite a few rules and many people, well known names even, wouldn’t or couldn’t support my ideas saying that “its not trance if you do that”. Now that they have heard the tracks they like them, many not even realising that they refused to collaborate with me on (what has become) their favourite tracks. Ironic really!
What are your feelings about what people are into on the trance dance floors around the world? We are at an interesting moment musically, lots of cross-pollination going on although it’s creeping into the trance scene more slowly than in other musical genres. I have never been a big dark fan. I definitely appreciate all forms of music and all forms of trance but my interests don’t lie in the darker, faster more aggressive nor commercial areas of trance. I have always opted for a more funky and groove orientated music, whenever possible less full on but not necessarily less intense. This said I can still see quite a lot of what is going on globally and from what I have seen (and what I feel personally) slower music is having a bigger and better impact. In the last year or 2 I have rarely gone faster than 143, basing most of my sets around the 138-140 BPM mark, and it seems that no one can tell the difference, at the least there have been lots of great fun sets for me and I see and hear the crowd enjoying it more and more. 5 years ago if I dropped the BPM many would complain, today, it’s the reverse.
Is full on still evolving musically? Let’s be honest, fullon has not evolved for a while now. There are still those producers doing amazing stuff, some of them even slowly pushing the boundaries; but basically the younger crowd is still enjoying the same old thing as they haven’t got tired yet. On the other hand, the older more jaded ones have just moved to techno, leaving trance a bit abandoned and unhealthy musically. As a DJ it’s my job, and my mission to provoke a reaction to this, and some sets have even been ranging from 128 – 140 BPM (given the time) and I feel the crowd reacts and enjoys more this as its less predictable than 2 hours of 145 BPM and the same bass-lines and layers and breaks and sequences.
Musically what is particularly working on the dance floors these days? One thing in particular that is working is that by playing slower music the breaks are much less predictable. This simple element of surprise does much more than typical full on as there isn’t enough talented producers trying their hand at creating great full on. Those that are still hold on to their music as if and don’t let anyone hear, let alone play it which is partly responsible for the fall of good psy-trance.
Finally, a question about your daily life! You live in Ibiza, in a creative hub of psy-trance DJs/producers. Tell us something about your daily life on the island and how you interact with each other… A typical day consists of bumping into Shanti at the supermarket, then later at a restaurant for dinner. Seeing the GMS boys in their studio and spending time in the studio myself. We all connect regularly to share ideas, play music to each other, have a drink or do a collaboration. We are a tight knit group here always interacting with each other. It’s a small island and we all live in the same area. Etnica have just built a 3 studio complex which will bring us all together even more. Definitely it is a privileged situation for us all.

What do the artists listen when they are in the mood? This month UK native-Germany based DJ, producer and Plastik Park label manager Sally Doolally (played at Boom 2002 and 2006) lets it all hang out because of Mindtsream 04, the Boom Radio Podcast…
When I’m happy I listen to: “Anything which I am currently into, it could be something forthcoming on Plastik Park or something fresh from the studio, basically anything which makes me tap my toes”.
When I’m angry I listen to: “Silence! I am someone who needs to take quiet time to turn that emotion around, as quickly as possible”.
When I’m relaxing I listen to: “The sound track from ‘Berlin’s Calling’ is one CD which I am really digging at the moment, its great for just kicking back and relaxing to. I also quite like a CD which came free with Groove magazine a couple of months ago and it keeps finding itself in the player. These days I also find myself listening to children music with my son, because if he is relaxed I am relaxed too”.
When I’m about to go out I listen to: “New music which I am about to play that night, or maybe a mix from Goetz, my husband, he is always doing new mixes and I love his groovy trippy style which he plays, it always gets me in the right mood for a party”.
When I’m about to go to sleep: “I don’ listen to music to fall asleep, I can’t switch off if there is music playing. I find myself listening to it, so it kind of defeats the object”.
When I need to put my son asleep I listen to: “’Floatation’, its a pretty old one by now, like from 2004 or something, on Interchill Records, but it has stood the test of time and without any doubt, it works like magic on him”.
When I’m checking the emails: “I usually listen to new music which is sitting on my desktop and has yet to get onto CD. I pile up folders and folders of it and sometimes it takes me way to long to get through it all, so there is always something there”.
When I need to be inspired I listen to: “Whatever are my favourite tracks of the moment. Fiord’s remix of Pesadilla-Hermosa has really blown me away recently, these guys are doing such good stuff these days, in fact I have always been huge fans of them, also as Antix, very inspirational indeed”.
When I’m cooking I listen to: “I often listen to a mix running, usually something from Goetz, I am his biggest fan. But at the moment I also like a mixed CD from Kaiser Souzai on CLM, its really groovy stuff and very easy to listen to in the background”.
Finally, what was the main approach you had to this mix? This mix is a taste of the music which I am playing at the moment. It’s maybe a bit harder and techy than some of my Boom audience might know me for, but it’s pretty pumping party music and its what gets me moving these days. As I don’t record my mixes very often, I thought I might as well do something which is current to what I am playing out right now.

Atyss and music specialist Patrick Rognant (if you’ve been in Paris in the 90s it’s impossible not to hear about his famous “Rave Up” shows) had one of the hottest DJ duos in European psy-trance in the late 90s. Nowadays, and on its own name, Parisian DJ, producer and label owner Atyss is one of the main activists of the French psy-trance. We invited the founder of Sonic Motion Records for the third incursion of Mindstream, and we spoke with him about music, parties and his work for cinema. You’ve been around for years in the French scene. What major changes you see from late 90s trance scene in Paris and today? Yes I’ve been around since 1995, starting to be old now! Ahaha Well back in the 90′s Paris was a hub for the international trance scene, they were 3 or even 4 parties every Saturday night with 2000 to 6000 people in each one, in incredible sites with amazing line up with great international djs & live acts, fire dancers, ice sculpture, animations, ‘Les nuits blanches’. There was a real culture which developed with records shops, fashion shops, bars with trance, Bastille & Pigalle were the places where those things happened ‘back in the day’ in Paris, now many of them have closed, there’s only one records shop ‘Techno Import’ that sell trance cds. In the same time on Saturday beginning of the night a radio show ‘Rave Up’ on Radio FG hosted by Patrick Rognant “my dj partner” updated people with party’s agenda, interviewed artists, and let them play their music on air. During the week there were many club parties, but progressively the scene changed, becoming less underground. It became difficult to find good locations and the government made things more tricky for organisers by making everything official “locations, dj’s, lives , deco & bar”. Then police started to block the roads to parties which led some organisers to leave the scene. Now parties are less frequent with a maximum of 1700 peoples for indoor and 4500 peoples for festivals, but have stayed true to quality with interesting line-ups, some long term organisation such as Gaia concept have managed to keep on the storm and new ones have emerged.
What are the french artists that inspired you the most and why? My inspiration is not coming directly from trance music or even French artists, but Pink Floyd for the psychedelic side; Fela Kuti for the drums; James Brown for the groove; Alpha & Omega for the trippy vibe; Herbie hancock for the synths & atmospheres; Meshell Ndegeocello for the bass and jazzy feeling; Brian Eno for the the pads, ambiances, perfect arrangements and production; and many more, movies also give me some inspiration.
Who is your ‘producer-extraordinaire’ nowadays on the psy-trance scene? Nowadays in psy-trance, Phatmatix is one of the artists I respect the most for his work, he’s really professional in his way of making music and talented to create atmosphere like a comic opera and industrial rhythms. His music is fluid with breaks and perfect arrangements and without concession.
You’ve created a label recently. What was the main goal for Sonic Motion Records? Our productions are orientated towards upbeat psychedelic acid trance designed for heavy dance session with a hint of chill out vibes for the late morning. We are also looking to diversify and bring our expertise to other fields (ambient, audio-visuals illustrations, electronic-psychedelic). You have a background in sound design for cinema. You’ve worked for movies like “Entre Chiens Et Loups” or “Camping Sauvage”. What is the main pleasure for you to work with image and sound on a professional level? Sound design or music with a film is the best way to create, because you rebuild a world & give an emotion to sequences, sound design is more fun & creative, creating fxs or atmospheres to put people into a world that gives feelings & emotions, it has no limits. Creating music on images is more attractive also because the film gives you a connecting thread for how to compose the music to give an emotion at a precise moment. I am currently working with a team of visuals in sonic motion records called “Homeostasys” they are geniuses in cognitive science. We work together on a audio-video symbiosis project which combine audio & midi which control animation on 3D pictures, as every channels from the track is linked to a movement this make real sense for electronic music.
Tell us about this mix, what did you want to transmit with this? This mix transports you from the late night mayhem to the early morning vibes, like from 5 to 7am, it s that time that I played at the Boom Festival and it’s the time that I really enjoy playing, most of the tracklist is a mix of our past & our future releases, as well as one of my previously released track.
Last questions, what major projects you have for your label in the next future? After the last ‘Hypnotwist’ compilation and the album of Noisy Pipes. In June we are going to release Sonic Athmosphere compiled by DJ Shaktipat, coming next Killer Buds album, Toxic album, and my own album where I want to develop this audio video symbiosis project in order to release a DVD in the end of the year.

You’ve been traveling all over the globe playing for many crowds. But most of the people don’t know that you have a background as drummer in heavy metal bands. Please tell us something about your “past” life as drummer? Yes, before i got in touch with electronic music in general I was in a black metal band playing drums. My favorite bands and inspiration were Cradle of Filth, My Dying Bride, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Carcass, Amorphis, etc. One of my favorite drummers was (and still is) Nikolas, from Cradle of Filth, he was definitely one of my main inspirations.
When did you start to see trance as the proper music platform for you to explore? It was at Boom 98 when i first thought of making this kind of music. Then I went to live in London in 1999 then came back in early 2000 and started my trance project.
What have you been doing lately music wise? Recently I’ve started a minimal techno project, it’s always good to explore new sonorities and different ways to produce. In trance music I’ve been doing some collaborations with Absolum, Cpu, Abomination, and at the moment I’m making a remix from the track “Basic Survival Instinct” (Menog vs Absolum) which was a world hit in the main dance floors.
This podcast was based on a live in Costa Rica. How and where was recorded and what else have you done onto the mix? I’ve recorded the live act over there, but in the studio I’ve added some percussion loops and FX for this podcast.
Your new project is as teacher in a tech-school in Lisbon. Are you converting more people into trance or what? What are you doing in there? Yes, it’s funny! I´m teaching the module “Live performance” in the Electronic Music Production Course at www.etic.pt, but it’s not only for people that listen to trance. I teach people that listen minimal, techno, drum&bass, trance. Electronic music heads basically!
Who have been your favorite producers to work with? Absolum, Cpu, Space Tribe and Shift.
How is a regular day on Menog’s life? Normally i only work on music during the day and weekly days. I wake up and have breakfast then I’m off to the studio to work. Now with the classes, i have to prepare them every week as well, normally I do it in the end of the day after working in some music. At nighttime i don’t work, only when I have some friend over and were working together.

You’ve been a member of the old-school project Necton. As a producer what were the major positive aspects that trance allowed you to achieve? Ah, the good old wild days! For me, the time with Necton was always more about the vibe, the community, and the amazing parties than an obsession with progressive trance. I haven’t listened to those tunes for a long time; I do not think I even have them anymore.
