Today we delve into the dichotomy of starvation and gluttony in business, as well as life. This concept not only applies to corporate strategies but also mirrors a fundamental human tendency to oscillate between scarcity and excess.

Key Highlights:

  1. Starvation vs. Gluttony in Business: Glazer's theory suggests that while businesses often fear starvation - a lack of resources and growth - it is gluttony, or excessive growth and expansion, that leads to their downfall. This notion challenges conventional wisdom about business growth and expansion.
  2. Crumbs Cupcake - A Case Study: The story of Crumbs Cupcake serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating how fear-driven expansion led to its bankruptcy. This example underscores the perils of gluttony in business, as the company's rapid growth outpaced market sustainability.
  3. Apple's Strategic Retraction: Contrasting with Crumbs Cupcake, Apple's success story under Steve Jobs' leadership highlights the effectiveness of strategic retraction. Jobs' decision to reduce Apple's product offerings significantly laid the foundation for its remarkable success.

Notable Quotes:

  • "The fear of starvation leads to actions driven by scarcity, while it is often gluttony, or excess, that seals a business's fate."
  • "Growth is essential, but it's the quality, not the quantity of growth that matters."

Action Step:

  • Reflect on areas in your life or business where you might be overextending. Identify where strategic reduction can lead to more focused and effective growth. Remember, it's not about doing more; it's about doing what matters most and doing it well.

Welcome to another episode of the Happy, Healthy Human podcast! I'm your host, Paul Levitin. In today's episode, recorded almost three years ago, we delve into a crucial success clue: "Failure – Five Things Guaranteeing Your Failure Before You Start." Let's explore the pitfalls that often sabotage our goals and how to avoid them.

Introduction:Our goals don't adhere to arbitrary time constraints. Unrealistic goal setting, especially with tight timeframes, sets us up for failure. The paradox is that while more time provides more opportunities for success, we often want everything faster. Today, we uncover the five common pitfalls that guarantee failure in any endeavor.

Key Points:

  1. Unrealistic Goal Setting:

    • Unrealistic goals lead to failure. Goals are outputs determined by inputs, and setting unattainable goals sets us up for short-term failure.
    • Source: Happy Healthy Human Podcast Episode 2
    • Time Constraints:

    • Adding arbitrary time constraints to goals can hinder success. Realistic timeframes allow for sustainable progress and prevent learned helplessness.

    • Negative Self-Talk:

    • Negative self-talk becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Identifying and changing negative narratives are crucial for long-term success.

    • Negative Environment:

    • Your environment, both physical and mental, plays a significant role. Curate your surroundings, social media, and relationships to foster positivity and support.

    • Comparing Yourself to Others:

    • Each person's journey is unique. Avoid the trap of comparing yourself to others, as it can lead to unrealistic expectations and hinder your progress.

    • Source: Concept of Sonder

Actionable Takeaways:

  • Set realistic goals with achievable timeframes.
  • Foster positive self-talk and challenge negative narratives.

Start With Why - Episode 1 APPLE PODCASTS SPOTIFY

Welcome to the "Happy Healthy Human" podcast! In this episode, "Why Behind What," host Paul Levitin explores the profound concept of understanding our motivations. Inspired by Simon Sinek's "Start with Why," Paul digs into the layers beneath surface-level goals, emphasizing the importance of finding a deep purpose.

Discover the driving force behind success, the role of serotonin, and the internal battle between the lazy and striving aspects within us. Join us as we unravel the power of naming and taming negative habits, providing actionable insights to navigate the path towards positive change.

Key Points:

  1. The Power of Why:

    • Understanding the deep motivation behind your actions is crucial for creating lasting change.
    • Simon Sinek's concept of "Start with Why" emphasized finding purpose, and it still stands the test of time.
    • Surface vs. Deep Why:

    • Going beyond superficial goals like wealth or fitness, delve into the profound reasons behind your desires.

    • Magic wand goals are nice ideas, but the true motivation lies in uncovering what achieving those goals would unlock for you.
    • Finding Your Why for Success:

    • Financial success requires a deeper reason beyond just wanting money. It's about the impact on your life and others.

    • Serotonin, the happiness chemical, is produced when you feel a sense of accomplishment or recognition.
    • The Battle Inside:

    • The internal struggle is between two "dogs" – the lazy one seeking safety and the striving one eager for accomplishment.

    • Evolutionary factors make the lazy dog's drive stronger, emphasizing safety and energy conservation.
    • Naming and Taming Negativity:

    • Name, claim, and tame negative habits by understanding the why behind them.

    • Investigate the 'why not' side to get ahead of justifications for not taking positive actions.
    • Positive Alternatives:

    • Identify positive alternatives that still serve the purpose of distractions or stress relief without harming your well-being.

    • The importance of choosing words carefully – stress relief through actions like eating junk food is a distraction, not a true solution.

Kelly is an ex-personal trainer turned transformational coach specializing primarily in body image and relationships with food. After being a personal trainer for several years, she dove deeply into personal development - originally for her mental health and for the success of her business - and started to realize that her perceived healthy lifestyle as a fitness trainer and nutritionist was just a very convenient way to disguise an eating disorder and abusive relationship with herself. Her journey of reconnecting back with herself beyond the conditioning of diet culture, the fitness industry and entrepreneurship was the groundwork for the work she does today in coaching women to feel at home inside of themselves and their bodies.

He has A Masters Degree in Physical therapy, which he used as a clinical practitioner for over 20 years, then went back to school for his MBA, and then completed his PhD with a focus on the topic of mental resiliency, all while writing 4 books, and serving as CEO of multiple companies

He also has completed ELEVEN iron man races and WON a race called RACE ACROSS AMERICA, a literal bike race from the pacific to the Atlantic Ocean across the entire US!

Talk about mental resiliency!

Brad is also a father of 3 children, and husband to his wife of nearly 30 years, with whom he collectively runs the “catalyst coaching institute,” or CCI, which is where I became certified and then master certified as a health and wellness coach, before sitting for my board exams.

I have learned so much from Brad over the years, and I’m excited for you to learn from him as well

Nick completed his PhD through Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions with a dissertation focus on motor skill learning and sprinting. Nick Is the author of “The language of coaching: the Arte and science of teaching movement,” which is a phenomenal book not just about human movement, but learning, and how the human mind works

And that is why I wanted to have Nick on the show, because of his vast and unique knowledge of humans, how we think, how we learn, and why we do what we do.

Nick was gracious enough to chat with me all the way from Ireland, and we did have a few internet hiccups throughout the call, so there are a couple of brief moments where his audio cuts out, but this episode was so powerful and so packed full of knowledge, that It really doesn’t matter and I still couldn’t wait to share it with you

Today I have a very special surprise for you. Rather than the usual guest conversations, where I bring on an expert to talk on a specific topic, on today’s episode I’m actually the one being interviewed.

I was recently on the “make your course great” podcast, hosted by Kate Nash. Kate is an expert in marketing and course creation, and on her show she interviews coaches and course creators, so she had me on to talk about my new course “Quit quitting: the Proven System to Building Your Purposeful, Passionate Life.” In this episode, Kate helps me break down my course, and understand who needs it, and how I can best serve my clients, and the world.

This is a great “peek behind the curtain,” to get to see a little bit about what goes on in my head, and what I’m up to. This was recorded a few weeks ago, and I’ve actually already launched the first iteration of the course, which you’ll hear Kate talk about, and it’s going amazingly, and the participants are getting so much value out of it.

I think this episode will be extremely valuable for you, because we dig into the logic and thought processes I use to help my clients get life-changing results.

Gillian Tietz is the host of the "Sober Powered" podcast and is a biochemist out of the Boston area.

When Gill quit drinking in 2019, she dedicated herself to learning about alcohol's influence on the brain and how it can cause addiction. Today, she educates and empowers others to assess their relationship with alcohol.

This was a super interesting and topical conversation to me, because as some long time listeners know, I have had my own dark path with alcohol, and while I am not SOBER in the sense that I never drink, I’d say I’m about 95% of the way there, only having alcohol every couple of months, a handful of times a year tops.

A key factor in me turning my life around, from being blackout drunk, drug doing, belligerent, bad decision making, ass hat, to creating and becoming the happy, healthy, human, was me getting away from drinking so much.

This episode isn’t meant to tell anyone what to do, nor do I nor Gill seek to judge, or anything like that. If you like to drink, and have no plans on stopping, this episode is still going to be hugely impactful for you

And that is because of Gill’s unique perspective as a scientist, and how she understands the human body, and the human brain, and her insights around building and breaking habits, regardless of if those habits have anything at all to do with alcohol or not

"Tell  me a win from this week!?"

This sentence is how I start off EVERY coaching call with my mindset coaching clients. The importance of celebrating wins, big or small, can't be overstated. There is a rhyme and a reason to this, and an actual science behind not only the science of celebrations, but what makes a celebration beneficial, versus simply a "cheat" that throws you off track and takes away from the greater goal.

What are some ways you celebrate your wins? Reach out to me with a DM on IG or facebook and let me know!

People talk about "self talk" a lot. Hell, I sure do. And for damn good reason!

This is the start of everything. If you don't understand it, if you don't take it seriously, you're guaranteed to fail. No joke, that's seriously how I feel. It's that important.

One of the best ways to take control of YOUR self talk, is through the use of positive affirmations. Since I know this can be a weird thing at first, I've made a "morning affirmation" recording that you can download and listen to each day, to get your self talk right and get your mindset moving in the right direction!

I am not economist, not a statistician, and I suck at math in general. In business school, the only class I ever failed was Statistics 1.

In life however, we often come to learn things later, that we wish we understood earlier.

I wish I understood costs, beyond the economic value and how to use them to make better decisions in life.

My loss however, is your gain, and in this episode I explain how to make better decisions, and how to understand two topics that can't be overlooked if you want to be health, happy, and successful: sunk costs, and opportunity costs

That's why when I meet someone who shoots it straight, and comes correct with facts, and real actionable advice, I always take note. Adam Hameed is one of those people, and over the last few months I have really enjoyed connecting with him and speaking with him on the Clubhouse app, so I knew this would be a good talk.

Some key points:

3:05- Calling out BS in the fitness industry

6:05- Understanding anecdotal evidence vs scientific facts

Dr Ryan runs themovementfix.com , and is one of the smartest guys in the fitness space. I have learned so much from him over the years, I've taken his courses, so it was a pleasure and an honor for me to have him on this episode.

In true HHH fashion, we spoke almost nothing about fitness or corrective exercise (a topic both of us are experts in) and instead dove deep into mindset, life, existentialism, and all of the stuff I really like to talk about. So this was a pleasure for me, and I really suggest you get your note-pads out as the last 20 min or so especially is stuffed full of good takeaways.

Here are some time stamps for the impatient:

1:40: Simple does not mean easy

3:40: How Dr Ryan defines "health"

8:40: Are you trying to be better, or just not be worse?

11:45: Fitness & aging

18:10: How can we use the internet for good

25:40: Dealing w growing pains

31:40: Life as a tree

36:30: The delayed feedback loop

39:30: Self esteem and what it means

42:10: Being reactive vs being proactive

44:45: Are you trying to win, or are you trying not to lose?

45:35: Ryan's action step

This episode I go through 31 life lessons that have become clear to me over the course of my now 31 years on this planet

  1. Everything is the same.
  2. Health is non negotiable
  3. Fitness is great for a variety of reasons. Looking a certain way is low on that list
  4. Same can be said about nutrition
  5. Doing the hard thing is always the right answer. I have yet to find a single example of where this is not the case
  6. The older I get, the less I care about ‘having fun.’
  7. Mindset matters, more than just about anything else
  8. Time is to valuable to waste commuting. Move closer, or get a different job
  9. After you have a roof over your head and food on the table, all money is wasted. What do you want to waste it on?
  10. Be ruthless with your time. Say no to more things
  11. Everything has an opportunity cost. Understand it, and calculate it
  12. The stories we tell ourselves about our past, write our future. Be careful how you speak to yourself.
  13. The internet is the most powerful tool of our generation.
  14. You are totally, completely, 100% in control.
  15. Less smart phones, more smart conversations
  16. Food is so much more than just something we eat. It is a part of our families, our cultures, our religions.
  17. Spending all of your time to make money that you then don’t have the time, or energy to spend, is not a worthwhile trade
  18. Drink more water. Eat more fruits and vegetables.
  19. If you aren’t actively planning ahead, you are actively doing harm to your future self
  20. Every decision you make effects so many more people than just you. Remember that. Only thinking about yourself is selfish by definition.
  21. Ive never finished a book, or a workout and regretted it
  22. Invest in yourself. The best money you can spend is on courses, and teachers (this includes personal trainers and business/life coaches)
  23. There is no right way. You have to figure it out yourself, but you can learn from the mistakes of others
  24. It’s astonishing (and also sad) how much attention people pay to how they look, and little they pay to how they feel
  25. That thing won’t make you happy. Whether it is money, a promotion, the girl, the abs, the number on the scale, or whatever else. It all starts from within.
  26. Abs are overrated. So are biceps. And basically all vanity muscles
  27. Lying to others is bad. Don’t do it. Lying to yourself is worse.
  28. The most valuable skill in the world is being able to delay gratification. If you can do that, you win at life
  29. People don’t value you, or your time if they aren’t paying for it
  30. Yes it’s hard. Yes it sucks. You’ve still gotta do it anyway.
  31. Read more books.
