Not every walk has to be an epic, with 25+ miles in a day or with hundreds of metres of ascent. This week my friend Ray & I headed to Alport for a wander down Lathkill Dale and then back via the Limestone Way and Bradford Dale. I was doing a dual recording during this AudioBoo with my GoPro for the footage and my Zoom H1 for the Audio. After my walk today I went for a swift drink in the Old Nags Head at Edale. I got talking with the barmaid about history and she grabbed me her book of Edale through the ages. It was a fascinating book. When I set off home I did something ever never done before, picked up a hitchhiker, he turned out to be a really nice guy who is an avid Fell Runner

The weather this summer has been terrible, that is no understatement, it really has been rubbish. I know it must be digitally programmed into our British DNA to complain about the weather but this year it really is a valid complaint. We have had the odd day here and there where it has been nice but it always seems to fall when i’m at work . I can’t let a little thing like the weather stop me from getting out into the Peak District though, I simply had to adjust my expectations a little and just get kitted out in the waterproofs.

My thoughts having just watched the documentary called Alone in the Wild. It was made back in 2009 and stars the film maker Ed Wardle surviving in the Canadian Yukon wilderness area. I was amazed by the concept and it was an interesting look at the effects solitude has on the human mind. I've been fascinated by the Canadian wilderness for a long while now and I'm a huge fan/disciple of Ray Mears. I've read books, I've practiced bushcraft, I've foraged for food in an amateur way, would I be able to deal with the solitude? Walking is one of my biggest passions in life, the freedom and oneness with the landscape really appeal to me. I crave solitude at times when it comes to walking, sadly in the Peak District there are very few places that you can go to get away from the crowds. Over these last few years i’ve made it my mission to try and explore every corner of the Peak and seek out some new areas that I haven’t set foot before. As i’m from the Chesterfield area I mainly dedicated my walking time to the eastern or central areas of the Dark Peak, its just so easily accesible to me so I can safely say I have that area covered. The western area of the Peak is slightly less trodden by me so i’ve set a goal of ticking off as much as possible this year.

The 9 Edges Challenge is a charity event run by the Edale Mountain Rescue Service. the 9 Edges in question are Derwent, Stanage, Burbage Upper, Burbage Lower, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow, Gardoms and Birchens. The start point was going to be Fairholmes at Ladybower then the eventual end point was Robin Hood near Baslow
