Carl King
In the progressive rock world, I worked under the names Sir Millard Mulch and Dr. Zoltan. I’ve made music with Dweezil Zappa, Virgil Donati, Mike Keneally, Marco Minnemann, Travis Orbin, Thomas Lang, and Morgan Agren. My 2005 album, “How To Sell The Whole F#@!ing Universe To Everybody, Once And For All!” was co-released on Mimicry Records owned by Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle.
I now focus on scoring orchestral music for TV and film. I studied composition at State College of Florida and I have a Master Certificate in Composition and Orchestration for Film & TV from Berklee Online.
In the filmmaking world, I’ve worked on several documentaries (Jon Schnepp’s The Death Of Superman Lives: What Happened starring Tim Burton and Kevin Smith, Apocalypse Later: Harold Camping Vs The End of the World, and Morgan Agren’s Conundrum featuring Devin Townsend and Brendon Small).
Lately, I create my own animated shows, which I also write, direct, and score.

“I would like to hear your thoughts on the creative process and the underlying emotional state of mind. I don’t understand any of it and I’m a fairly creative person. I can tell you all about what kind of music I write, what I do in a song or what theorem I apply in a solo. But I can’t tell you why I get ideas in my head and when I do.”

This episode, I talk to Brendan Davis. Brendan is an old friend of mine, and he was one of the first people I met in Los Angeles when I moved here in 2006. He showed me around and gave me a job, and I spent many hours getting free psychotherapy out of him.
A little history about Brendan: As a kid, he started out running the lights in theater productions in his home town. His band went on to appear on the TV show Star Search with good old Ed McMahon! He talks about his fun experiences with Kevin James, Punky Brewster, and Dweezil Zappa, Martha Quinn of MTV fame. Remember her?
He also tells me about his run-ins with my hero, Kip Winger. Of the band Winger! I’ll forever be envious.
Brendan has done tons of crazy things in show biz, from doing sound for the TV show Alias, to Producing a Chinese TV show starring Marvel Comics Stan Lee, M. Night Shamalyan, the Director Justin Lin, and Sean Astin of The Goonies and Boobathon. Who writes this?
He now lives in China and travels the world working as a movie producer. His most recent film, as of the recording of this episode in early 2019 is called My Favorite Season which was shot in Paris. So here we go.

After taking a long break to focus on my music education and personal responsibilities, I am back with an interview with Free Salamander Exhibit. Those paying attention will know them as a — sort of — "continuation" of the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum tradition, but with some changes in the membership. This is an outrageous group of musicians and artists and I recommend you work your way through their entire catalog starting with the earliest incarnation, known Idiot Flesh from 1985.
This interview was recorded on August 9, 2017 — that’s almost an entire YEAR ago. I’m sorry I’m so late, but I am slowly catching up. I have several other episodes in the works.

We had multiple mics with multiple technical problems. But I did my best to make it listenable, just for you. We discuss their process, their theatrical mystique, and what it’s like to be a part of such a — Free Salamander Exhibit.

I’ve made a bunch of music, written some books, worked in documentary films, and now I’m making an Adult Swim -style cartoon.
It’s called The Oracle of Outer Space — and it’s a show about 5 bizarre radio hosts who struggle to operate the last remaining AM radio station -- which is probably about to explode and crash into the earth any moment.
It’s inspired by Art Bell’s Coast To Coast AM, WKRP In Cincinnati, and somehow even... Frasier.
I’ve recruited Lance Myers, lead animator of A Scanner Darkly to bring this thing to life, in a 12-minute pilot episode.

My writing team that wrote the dialog for Sir Millard Mulch's "How To Sell..." and Grand Architects of the Universe are already hard at work on the pilot episode script — and I’ll be composing the musical score.
I’m proud to announce that Dweezil Zappa will be lending his voice talents to this show.
And the uncanny Jon Schnepp of Metalocalypse and Space Ghost Coast To Coast has also offered to do some voice acting. Astute fans will remember his award-winning performances as The Wisdom Cube and The Creature from Plaque Lagoon on Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

The cost to finish this pilot episode is going to be $10,000, and all of that goes straight to the animation process.
A typical Adult Swim-style pilot episode can cost anywhere between $80k and $500k to produce through an animation studio (Source: PowerhouseAnimation.com), with dozens or even hundreds of people working on it. To guarantee we get this thing completed, we’re going to keep the costs down and do it all in-house.
IF we can raise more than that initial goal, we can do things like: pay Lance Myers his normal rate, hire a second animator, get more voice actors, and produce more episodes using our same punk rock budget skills.
Getting an animated TV show made through the traditional studio and network system can be a confusing and frustrating nightmare, especially for an introvert like me. You have to go to the right Hollywood parties, wade through the fakes and frauds, impress the right people, somehow get an agent, submit scripts, maybe get to pitch your show someday, beg, get rejected, beg some more, pitch another show, fight daily to defend your ideas from some random person’s wife from changing them, and ultimately someone else is going to tell you how and even IF it’s going to get made, because they own it. And that’s in the best case scenario.
We all know that at any point, even with a successful TV show, it can just get cancelled on a whim, even if it’s highly successful. (Metalocalypse, Firefly). They just pull the plug one day and there’s nothing you can do.
So with your help, we can creatively do anything we want.
We can even put a Mr. Bungle T-shirt on the station manager without having a meeting with the network about it. (Hey, Disco Volante is his favorite album.)
Maybe if this thing takes off, we could produce a whole season ourselves -- and later, get it distributed through Hulu or Netflix.

Today, it’s an interview with Mike Keneally. Best known for playing in Frank Zappa’s band, Steve Vai’s band, and Joe Satriani’s band. He created one of my favorite records of all time, LOOK THIS UP: the Vai Piano Reductions, in which he plays a selection of Steve Vai’s guitar music — on solo piano. Truly enchanting and scary. He also happened to play '70s classic rock guitar and do many character voices for my album Grand Architects of the Universe. This is the most uncomfortable interview I've done in years. I didn't realize it, but all of my questions were about negative topics. I happened to be in the middle of a bad depression at the time. At one point Keneally just stopped talking mid-sentence and looked out the window... and his mic cable came unplugged, as the subject became too dark. I edited that moment out, and I felt terrible because he clearly didn't want to talk about negative stuff any more. I apologized, and as I glanced at my list, I realized all of the questions I prepared continued down my current path of darkness and cynicism. But I decided to push through it, and I think this was a much more candid -- and maybe three-dimensional interview because of it.

Today I have another previously unreleased LOST EPISODE for you, rescued from March 2014. It’s with Gregg Bissonette who might best be known for his work on David Lee Roth’s Eat ‘Em & Smile Record, with Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan. But as 3 or 4 people know, I have always preferred the album Skyscraper. I actually have it framed above my desk, so I didn’t waste much time in making that almost 30 year old record the topic of this interview. Also, this is my first MINI episode I’m releasing. It’s only about 15 minutes long, as I caught Gregg in the hallway of a hotel before he went in to start his drum camp.
Apologies that this is the lowest quality episode I’ve released so far, because it was all recorded on a handheld Zoom recorder with built-in stereo mic passed back and forth between us. There’s only so much I could do to improve the quality, so if it bothers you, just don’t listen to it. In fact, give up on listening to all podcasts released by everyone. However, I DO hope to release more MINI Episodes in the future, minus all the popping and booming.

Tamar Halpern is a filmmaker... specifically a writer and director living in The Imaginary City of Los Angeles. A few years ago she released a documentary that all creative people will love. It's called Llyn Foulkes One Man Band, and it's about a painter who was discovered by the art world at Age 77. For my musician friends, this guy's got a homemade complex musical contraption called The Machine -- it's a sort of drum set with pitched bicycle horns, which he plays while singing jazz songs. Go watch it on Netflix, iTunes, or Amazon right away, because it's a dark and funny masterpiece, kind of like American Movie.
Tamar has also written and / or directed 6 feature films, including Shelf Life starring Betsy Brandt from Breaking Bad, Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life starring Mira Sorvino, and the recent Lifetime movie called My Daughter Is Missing.
Tamar is a great friend of mine and was actually my first freelance client in 2008 when I quit the corporate day job world. They say the best way to repay someone is have them take an online personality test. So Here we go...

I'm Carl King, can you believe it?
In this LOST EPISODE, I talk with Mark Borchardt, the subject of my favorite documentary of all time, American Movie.
This was recorded in June 2014 at Bell Sound Studios when Mark was out here in Hollywood for a film. My previous podcast was discontinued due to Imaginary City difficulties, so I'm releasing the episode now.
Listening back to this, I'm a bit embarrassed at how intimidated I was by him. His answers and reactions really threw me off a few times, so much that I even edited out a few of my derailments. Of course, Mark is one of my creative folk heroes, but normally I can handle interviewing anyone. As you will hear he is highly intelligent and charismatic, and in my defense I was on a high dose of SSRIs at the time for acute anxiety. It did have a severe sedating effect on me, and I can even hear it in my voice.
