As you may know, I'm back on the Coordinating Committee of the Peace Center and volunteered to take on the task of leading our annual Holiday Gala planning committee. We're going to hold it on the 11th (online) and 12th (interactive) of December and it looks like we are going to have to put together an OUTSTANDING and ASTOUNDING online event by then. So---friends, members, allies, volunteers, tech whizzes---please get on the committee and SHOWER me with creative ideas! Our first planning meeting will be held at the Peace Center, 3pm Thursday, Sept 10th (you can join us on Zoom if you'd rather distance). Some ideas include: virtual local bands and drum-circles, large Zoom meetings, silent auctions, videos on honored members (such as Allen Cooper and Mandy Pino). Videos on Peace and Justice groups, events, volunteers, staff and members, photo montages...I KNOW you can come up with many more suggestions. Start with the COMPLETELY bungled (on purpose or not) federal response to the pandemic, the sudden lack of testing kits in NM, and the new predictions of 800k dying of Covid before all is said and done add right winged Covid spreading rallies and bringing weapons to public protests while the police choose to ignore an emergency anti weapons Municipal mandate based on familiarity and race...and the subsequent racially biased arrests to two BLM supporters 3 days later at a peaceful counter protest...Bernalillo County deputies illegally evicting a BLM leader and the state holding Clifton White as a political prisoner what are we to do?

We stand at a crucial moment in the fight against systemic racism and police violence in our communities. The tragic killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and others have made it clear – it is long past time to change our policing systems. But a major obstacle to reform continues to block progress – police unions.
This summer, the Albuquerque police union’s collective bargaining agreement is up for renegotiation. This gives us a rare opportunity to break the logjam and demand real accountability for officers who brutalize or kill the people they swore to protect.
Sign the petition demanding Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller renegotiate the collective bargaining agreement in a way that serves our communities and restores accountability to policing.
Public service unions like those that represent firefighters, teachers, and police play an essential role by providing our public servants with collective bargaining power to obtain fair wages, better benefits, and safe working conditions. But police unions are unique in that they also negotiate some of the terms under which their members use state-sanctioned violence against people in their communities. The result of the police union’s immense political and cultural power has made it exceedingly difficult to hold individual officers accountable when they brutalize or murder someone.
We have an opportunity in Albuquerque to restore a proper balance between fairness to officers and officer accountability, but we need you to join this effort.
Tell Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller it’s time to negotiate a new union contract that provides real, meaningful accountability for officers who abuse their power.

Donald Trump has a way of saying a lot of crazy and incoherent things. And he’s such a ‘genius’ at it that people (like comedian Sarah Cooper) can parody him pretty much by just playing a tape of what he says. And recently, the most recent example of this is his quite amazing statement that the concept of chokeholds sounds ‘so innocent, so perfect.’
That is a very strange statement. It sounds like something that an insane murderer would say after he’s been arrested for choking hundreds of people to death. They finally got the serial killer and he was a complete madman. And as he was being arrested he raved: ‘The concept of chokehold sounds so innocent, so perfect!’ And, you know, it’s something right out of Silence of the Lambs. It’s some kind of horror movie.

Another murder at the hands of the police. We have experienced this here at home and Black people around the country continue to be victims of the same crimes. Minneapolis is only the latest injustice and the simple firing of the police officers involved is definitely not enough. Most of these criminal police officers have gone unpunished as our families and communities remain frozen with grief and fear.
Who will be next?
Our voices must be heard and our protest must be strong. We are all affected by this continued attack on people of color and while we still struggle under the most repressive government in the history of this country we have to push back. We must send a united message that we will not be silent as federal, state and local governments attempt to normalize oppression and police assault on people and communities of color.
The Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice hosted a candlelight vigil on Sunday, May 31st at 5PM. We are asking you to partner with us and share your thoughts and your calls to further action. Social distancing will be encouraged but there will be room for everyone to participate safely. Please confirm your plans to join us and let us know if you have someone who will speak on behalf of your organization.

My name is Alexander Harrison and I am the Uncle and pre-adoptive parent for JW (1 year old). He has been in my care from 12/31/2018 (9 months old) until 10/25/2019 (18 months old). While I was at work, JW had an accident in the home that sent him to the hospital. My wife, Anita, took her eyes off of JW for a minute while attending to another pre-school age foster kid who was in our home. JW ended up toddling into the master bathroom, climbing on the toilet, then into the sink right next to the toilet where he ended up turning on the hot water and scalding himself.
Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) chose to remove JW, our relative, from our home because of this tragic accident.
JW's biological parents signed away their parental rights so we could adopt him. They knew JW would have better opportunities in life in my care, and they knew they would still be able to be a part of his life once the adoption went through.
At this point, some immediate family members, relatives, and important people in JW's life has not been able to see him in over 140 days. My wife and I were only able to see JW once in a supervised visit on 12/03/2019. We have not seen him in over 90 days now.

As the DOJ's Consent Decree begins to disappear, confusion and frustration reigns in the Citizens Police Oversight Agency, the Community Police Councils stand in jeopardy, killer cops not brought to justice, criminal cops being promoted, things are beginning to look like 2014 all over again. Selinda Gerrero is working with me to put this forum together in an attempt to bring everyone who was once involved with serious police reform back together again to strategize how to move into the future and hold the multi-levels of law enforcement accountable: APD, BCSO, NMSP, DAs office, DOJ all of it. We will work on filming and recording the forum to distribute it everywhere.
