2016
Cold calling = a waste of time.
Email is getting less effective. Email does work if it’s contextualized with stuff about your prospect.
Like it or not, you have to figure out AdWords.
Website content is still king
Social & Blog work when done well (still rare)
Don’t bother building mobile apps
Figure out a way to give buyers a taste
Customer = Marketing = Sales
2026
Get good at fat head SEO (be “the answer”)
Invest in Facebook
Can’t buy a “list” or “advertise” on private networks
Diversity content from written to video
Don’t fight the bot/ai revolution - it’s coming
Automate as much as possible, including sales & marketing

We are talking with Mike Donnelly from The Seventh Senth about the role of "account-based marketing."
Look at the leads you have as far back as 6 months, send them a simple email.
When prospect has received proposal and hasn’t responded:
Subject: Haven’t heard from you OR Cleaning out my pipeline OR Did zombies attack?
Body: I haven’t heard back from you so I’m going to assume either you’ve gone in a different direction or your priorities have changed. Let me know if we can be of assistance in the future.
When prospect is in early communication stages (no proposal, but after about a month):
Subject: Haven’t heard from you OR Cleaning out my pipeline OR Did zombies attack?
Body: I’m cleaning out my inbox and I realized I hadn’t heard back from you about X. I’m going to assume either you’ve gone in a different direction or your priorities have changed. Let me know if we can be of assistance in the future.

In today's episode, we invite Douglas Karr, Chad Pollitt and George B. Thomas to the show to discuss 'Disrupted' by Dan Lyons. The book is very controversial and is making waves in the industry. We'll discuss what it means for HubSpot, for inbound marketing in general and talk about some of the issues it raises for marketing and tech professionals.
We are discussing how marketing programs can succeed or fail based on how involved executive leadership is in the decision. Should your CEO be involved in things like agency selection, marketing strategy and website projects?
Projects can be delayed without executive involvement if they come in later in the process.
Sometimes business goals could get lost because the Marketing Manager doesn’t know about them.
You can unintentionally tell the Marketing Manager that you don’t trust them when you insert yourself into his/her process/decisions.
Commit to being involved in the entire process or commit to trusting your Marketing Manager to handle it.

Enterprise website projects take time and money and with a project this complex, it's not always going to go smoothly. How do you keep your project on time and on budget?
Keep your team small
The larger the team, the longer the project will take. No more than 2-3 people who will be focused and who really know the brand.
Know why you are redesigning
Know and understand where you want to go with it and what the plan should be.
Be aware it’s not a redesign, it’s a restructuring
When you redesign, you have to think about restructuring your content as well.
Commit to a content plan before starting
Know who will be owning the content before you get started.
Content is not always just copy/paste. It’s very time-consuming.
Consider paying for planning
If you leave the agency with many unknowns, they’ll most likely charge you more to account for those unknowns.
Commit to a photography plan
It’s good to be fun and yourself, but also understand who your audience - get professional photos.
Make a decision beforehand so you’re not scrambling
If rebranding, give yourself 6 months before redesigning your website
Take deadlines seriously if you want your project to hit the original deadline

Great UI and UX on any device.
Content has to have a different angle.
Content has to create an emotional response.
Content has to solve a problem.
Content has to be in an unexpected medium.

When you have the history, you build credibility
You tend to build a foundation and you can more quickly reap the benefits

We are covering "how failing can actually help you grow" as well as "what have Facebook and Google done now?"
Special guest: Robby Slaughter, CEO of AccelaWork and author of "Failure: the Secret to Success."
We have a huge cultural statement that you shouldn’t fail. So people are so afraid to fail.
First question to ask: Has every campaign you’ve ever done gone perfectly and made you tons of money? Then talk about what went wrong and what you learned from it.
Failing a test just shows what you know and what you don’t know. It’s a great map of what you need to study.
Examples of spectacular marketing fails:
A company sent an email that included the word “Testing” to his entire database. It was the best email he ever sent!

Try 1-column layout instead of multiple columns
You can guide the user and tell a story better
If you force the reader to think, you’ve already lost them
Try giving a gift instead of closing the sale right away
Try showing your call to action more than once
Either multiple times on a page or on multiple pages
Try recommending instead of showing equal choices

People want to follow recommendations

The top apps are dominating the app usage
25-50 apps that are the top apps that account for 80%-90% of all app usage
Every business should be optimized for mobile web (fully responsive)

Google search display updates, podcasting in 2016 and the PC is not dead. How to Fail at a Sales Call. As always, our Tactical Top 5 (actionable tweaks to improve your online presence).
Not researching the company before calling.
Researching makes you sound intelligent and gives you common ground to have a conversation about.
You can research via your CRM to see what they’re doing on your site, check out their LinkedIn profiles, Twitter feed, or Facebook.
Not leading in with what they’ve done that has caused you to call them.
Don’t lie about how you got their information
Not treating prospects with respect or giving them credit for being smart.

The weekly round up of the latest marketing news, A deep dive into your biggest marketing challenges.
Take a step back and figure out what is going to help you achieve your goals. Unless you have unlimited resources, you’re never going to hit every single thing. It’s about prioritization. Get really, really good at 3-5 things as opposed to being just OK at 15 things.
Being busy does not = being productive.
Get the data to see where you’re getting the best traction and do only what works best.
Develop a process/system to work in things you “don’t have time for”.
Make sure you know what types of leads you’re contacting.
Active, passive
Give referrals to prospects if it’s not a fit for you.
Marketing and Sales teams need to be in communication.
If you’re struggling to get traction, you will have to spend time or money. If you don’t have the time, you will have to find the money. If you don’t have the money, you will have to find a way to make the time.
Use partners to help grow your audience quicker.
Ask why the budget is so low.

Special guest: Dan Hanrahan from Sigstr

Love Letters from Google, How to Use LinkedIn for Marketing, Is Pinterest Your New Social Media Platform.
Dustin Clark - Element Three
We have the power to collect data and use that data to make decisions. Yet, people are so focused on getting their content up that they're missing the basic, smaller things like meta descriptions, etc.

Search engines use bounce rate and page load times to determine rank.
There are all kinds of free tools out there to give you data about how your site is performing. Use them!
