Interview with author and professor Matthew Thiessen. Jonny interviews Matthew on his book “Jesus and the Forces of Death: The Gospels' Portrayal of Ritual Impurity within First-Century Judaism.” Matthew starts out by breaking down two binaries that were used by ancient Jews - holy and profane; purity and impurity - and uses those as a guide to enlighten the listeners about ritual purity laws in first century Judaism and why Christians should care about them. It is a valuable conversation with a message that is important for all Christians. To end the episode, a little Spiritual Show and Tell: the street foods of Chicago, Down North pizza, and prayer.

The pastors are back for Season 3 of Resist and Restore! We have a lot of great interviews lined up for this season, but first, we have a little catching up to do. Julie, Jonny, and Rachel start out the episode by sharing some stories they heard on Easter at our sunrise meeting. Then they open up about the last two years - what they’ve learned about themselves and the church, and how they’ve grown. It is a vulnerable and relatable discussion. Later on in the episode, they share about what’s nurturing their souls: live music, Participatory Defense, and a collaborative art project throughout Lent.

The pastors start out with some talkback from a friend in our church in response to the last episode. Then, we dive in and look back at our favorite episodes from season 2 and lessons we’ve learned along the way with our producer, Laura! We highlight all of the great interviews we had: from folks in our community, to authors we’ve met through the internet, to our very own pastors. As always, we end with some Spiritual Show and Tell: playing Wordle with friends, Abbott Elementary, The O.C., and the story of Paul and Silas worshiping in prison.
The pastors will be taking a break from recording new episodes during Lent, but in the meantime, we will be re-releasing some of our favorite episodes from this past season, so be on the lookout for those!

Starting off with some talkback, the pastors reflect on their advent journeys: how they saw God working through Advent, and what they are still longing for. Then, a reflection on 2021. A little like the Daily Examen by Ignatius Loyola, a process involving looking over your day and praying about it with God, the pastors do a Yearly Examen, recounting the year's desolations and consolations. From the sorrow of the capitol insurrection and people leaving the church, to the joy of getting vaccinated and meeting in-person again, they dive in to ponder this roller coaster of a year and all the things to lament and praise. To wrap up, some Spiritual Show and Tell: a song from a Franciscan monk on YouTube, a freshly baked loaf of bread from a friend, and the new Circle of Hope Audio Art album.

Interview with professor and author Beth Allison Barr. Rachel and Jonny interview Beth on her book “The Making of Biblical Womanhood.” They talk about patriarchy in the church and in the Bible, medieval Christian women and dragon slayers, the history of gender-inclusive language in the Bible, how the industrial revolution changed the narrative around women’s roles, and more. It’s a rich interview full of history that challenges the patriarchal view of women’s roles in the church.
Also in this episode, the pastors talkback to an email they received from a friend in response to the previous podcast episode where Ben and Jonny discuss the Bible. Later, a little Spiritual Show and Tell: a poem about fatherhood from Poetry Magazine, a reminder of Sabbath and the gift of divine rest, Psalm 8, and bad jokes.

Psalm 8 (Jonny’s translation, with Robert Alter’s) For the lead player, on the gittith, a David Psalm.
Lord, our Maker, how majestic Your name in all the earth! Whose splendor was told over the heavens. From the mouth of babes and sucklings You founded strength on account of Your foes to put an end to enemy and avenger. When I see Your heavens, the work of You fingers, the moon and the stars You fixed firm, “What is a human being that You should note them, And the mortal, that You pay them heed, and You make them little less than the gods with glory and grandeur You crown them? You make them rule over the work of Your hands? All things You set under their feet. Sheep and oxen all together, and also the beasts of their field, birds of the heavens and fish of the sea, what moves on the paths of the seas.” Lord, our Maker, how majestic Your name in all the earth!
The Hebrew Bible by Robert Alter: https://wwnorton.com/books/9780393292497
Bad Jokes Where does an 800 lb gorilla sleep? Anywhere it wants. What kind of star wears sunglasses? A Movie star. Who was the first animal in space? The cow that jumped over the moon. What do you do when a monster sneezes? Get out of the way! How do you talk to giants? Use BIG words. What did the big chimney say to the little chimney? You smoke too much.

"People do not live very long or look very hard. We are very bad at scale. Things that live in the soil are too small to care about; climate change too large to imagine. We are bad at time, too. We cannot remember what lived here before we did; we cannot love what is not. Nor can we imagine what will be different when we are dead. We live out our three score and ten, and tie our knots and lines only to ourselves. We take solace in pictures, and we wipe the hills of history." -Helen Macdonald in "H is for Hawk"

“And now above and beyond the birds' song, Andy hears a more distant singing, whether of voices or instruments, sounds or words, he cannot tell. It is at first faint, and then stronger, filling the sky and touching the ground, and the birds answer it. He understands presently that he is hearing the light; he is hearing the sun, which now has risen, though from the valley it is not yet visible. The light's music resounds and shines in the air and over the countryside, drawing everything into the infinite, sensed but mysterious pattern of its harmony. From every tree and leaf, grass blade, stone, bird, and beast, it is answered and again answers. The creatures sing back their names. But more than their names. They sing their being. The world sings. The sky sings back. It is one song, the song of the many members of one love, the whole song sung and to be sung, resounding, in each of its moments. And it is light.” ― Wendell Berry, "Remembering"

Jonny interviews our Watershed Discipleship Compassion Team. Our friends Kristen and Jeremy share their views on climate change as it is, and unique ways to combat it. But there's more! They talk about decolonizing the land to view it in light of its waterways and other land formations, as opposed to our created boundary lines. Allowing the natural world to inform our perspective gives us a greater appreciation for it, and new insights into dismantling global warming. They also get into intersecting climate and environmentalism with other social justice issues, understanding how climate change deeply affects impoverished and BIPOC communities, and white supremacy and racism's involvement in the climate crisis. A compelling must-listen interview from two great minds helping to lead us into a more sustainable future.
Also, pastors consider the question: what did you need or receive in your own faith development early on in your life? They recount the good and the bad in their formation from church experiences. And as always, we end with Spiritual Show and Tell: Bach, Nietzsche, Dear White Peacemakers and Osheta Moore, the recovery community in South Philly.

Jonny interviews our friend Dani on a host of topics revolving around disabilities, including a deeper education on Disability Pride Month, ways of understanding how to better organize our world for disabled people, challenging ableist mindsets, and how all of us can get involved in the cause. They also get deep into Disability Theology and how Jesus navigates disabilities in the Bible, treating people in a revolutionary way that allows those who were outcasted to rejoin their communities. Dani brings it with her rich education and wisdom on disabilities, sharing some of her own personal journey and experiences as well.
Also, the pastors follow-up with an email on our Melissa Florer-Bixler interview, and they end the time with a little Spiritual Show and Tell on beach trips, poems, and data crunching!

Since this interview, Bruxy Cavey has been investigated for sexual misconduct. The investigation had concluded and names Bruxy as guilty of sexual sen, sexual harassment, and an abuse of power. We do not think the investigation is clear enough though. Bruxy had a sexual relationship with a woman he was counseling when she was 23 and he was 46. Considering that he was a man, her pastor, and counseling her, this is plainly sexual abuse, and it's important for us to name that.
Bruxy Cavey, an Anabaptist pastor and part of the Meeting House church in Canada, drops in on our podcast this week. He's here to discuss his new book "The End of Religion." Bruxy and Jonny talk about faith traditions, religious people, spiritual family, creative engagement in loving our enemies, and questioning structures and systems that get in the way of following Jesus. And way way more!
About "The End of Religion" - "Cavey contends that the Jesus described in the Bible never intended to found a new religion; instead he hoped to break down the very idea of religion as a way to God. With a fresh perspective on biblical stories, Cavey paints a picture of the world God originally intended and still desires: a world without religion."
Also, a touching follow-up on our disability theology convo from last episode, and a little Spiritual Show and Tell.

Interview with Kris Eden, one of our dear friends, and a major helper of the Participatory Defense Hub (along with our friends Bethany and Andrew!) in South Philadelphia.
Participatory Defense is a national movement dedicated to helping people who have criminal cases participate in their own defense. The Hubs come up with participatory strategies and resources that help to hold accountable the broken justice system, as people navigate it and present their cases.
Jonny and Kris dig in deep on the justice system and how it's set up, Larry Krasner, Derek Chauvin and what would the Hub do, Jesus on the cross forgiving criminals, and other stories from the Hub.
Also in this episode, pastor's get deep about Accessibility, Disability, and Theology, and ways of seeing the Bible through the Disability lens. Later, a little Spiritual Show and Tell: Spiritual Direction, a Palestinian cookbook, Dolly Parton, and worshiping from memory

Interview with pastor and author Melissa Florer-Bixler. Jonny interviews Melissa on her new book "How to Have an Enemy." They delve into ideas about enemies, the reign of God, communal formations as seen in blessings and woes, what we do with our hatred toward enemies, ICE agents and immigrants in the same church, even what the four horsemen of the apocalypse might actually be. It's a rich interview with tons of great conversation. Also in this episode, pastor's talk about what inerrancy means and the heavy Enlightenment influence commonly placed upon our present readings of the Bible. Later, a little Spiritual Show and Tell: Twitter has some soul-nourishment, the Dixie Chicks "Wide Open Spaces," retreats and longing for a new season of gathering in new ways, Mission Year and the Simple Way.

Pastors start out responding to an email about perfectionism and reckoning with White Supremacy. Later, it's all about Pentecost, its celebration, a dramatic reading of the Acts story and talking about it, sparklers, developing community around the early church (including sharing with each other), and everything else to do with that time tongues of fire fell on people. The pastors start off talking about organizing by what we have, and not by what we lack. We need to be fed by Jesus, need to be free from an evaluation of ourselves all the time and just be living in this place of being with Jesus so that we can do whatever the Spirit leads us to do.
A big interview between Jonny and Rachel on her views of the Bible: how to read it and engage with it, especially in community; dealing with patriarchy and colonialism that have mis-used the Bible; her own experience as a pastor; and some of her favorite theologians who engage with the Bible in a deep and yet relatable way.
We end with a little Show and Tell: books to read, spiritual people who've influenced us, and celebrating meeting in person outside for our Sunday meetings.

Jesus, as a mother you gather your people to you: You are gentle with us as a mother with her children; Often you weep over our sins and our pride: tenderly you draw us from hatred and judgement. You comfort us in sorrow and bind up our wounds: in sickness you nurse us, and with pure milk you feed us. Jesus, by your dying we are born to new life: by your anguish and labour we come forth in joy. Despair turns to hope through your sweet goodness: through your gentleness we find comfort in fear. Your warmth gives life to the dead: your touch makes sinners righteous. Lord Jesus, in your mercy heal us: in your love and tenderness remake us. In your compassion bring grace and forgiveness: for the beauty of heaven may your love prepare us.

And Jonny learns what a cherry blossom is! Following that, Jonny interviews our friend Jeana Master about her music, her new album, the songwriting process, the divine feminine, and worship music! Later, a little Spiritual Show and Tell. Rachel's soul nourished by a fellow Anabaptist who gathered pastors to talk about how to care for the most vulnerable. Ben gets into TikTok. The Circle of Hope pastors answer a concerned listener who is considering how to act as a pacifist during these trying times. They delve into deeper discussions on violence, being an ally, and the work of healing amidst the present struggles. Later, Rachel interviews a close friend and leader in Circle of Hope, Jimmy Weitzel, on his former addiction and how the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous moved him into closer relationship with God, and its overall relation to Jesus. The pastors end their dialogue with a little Spiritual Show and Tell, from having someone over (finally) for a meal to a beautiful passage from the book Just Mercy. This is a repost of our ninth episode! We'll be reposting the top 5 episodes of 2020 throughout the next few weeks, as we prepare for season 2 of Resist and Restore.
The pastors begin by talking about people's dreams once lockdown is lifted, and we can see each other again, including some of their own dreams.
In the second part, Rachel interviews Ben on the Bible and ways of reading and understanding it outside of the common cultural perspective that it might be a rule book, or has to be seen as a perfect book without any errors. The Bible is, in fact, much more nuanced, and filled with complexities and contradictions. How do we come to terms with those things or understand them? Ben offers some wonderful insights and a refreshing perspective.
Lastly, the pastors provide a little Spiritual Show and Tell. Julie loves a new book that she's reading with our Circle Mobilizing because Black Lives Matter team. It's called the Color of Compromise by Jamar Tisby which addresses churches and their complicity in racism. Jonny mourns the killing of Ahmaud Arbery's murder, and that he's glad to be part of an anti-racist church. Ben is inspired by a Psalm. Rachel celebrates the growth in her cell and the joining of a family who is in sanctuary at the moment.

This is a repost of our eighth episode! We'll be reposting the top 5 episodes of 2020 throughout the next few weeks, as we prepare for season 2 of Resist and Restore.
Jonny, Rachel, Ben, and Julie start out with several reflections on what's happened in the last two weeks throughout Circle of Hope. Some great stuff has been going on. We're very much alive and doing things, even in lockdown. From someone being celebrated in a unique way as an essential worker, a cell-goer being gifted a computer, all the way to the South Broad Street Neighbor's Association giving out pizzas, and even an idea for online baptisms!
In the second section we dive deep! Jonny interviews social workers, doctors, and researchers from our community on the state of covid-19, their professional and personal experiences with it, many of whom are at the front lines. We even interviewed one of our friends who actually had covid-19 and her experience with it. We have a lot of great and caring people in our community. Tons of wisdom, insights, and ideas to take to heart and carry with us during these difficult times.
We end it with a little Spiritual Show and Tell. Jonny just wants his football. Ben has some nature experiences. Rachel relishes in her cell camaraderie and her friend who video'd a sign language dance. Julie is inspired by poetry from On Being and noticing the people who keep life going in the midst of our shelter in place.

The pastors start out with some body prayer. How do you use your body to pray? They offer some practices and practical things they do to connect with God.
Let's look at some of our most listened-to episodes over the past year! It's our review of the top five episodes, the ones you listened to the most. From talking about the environment needed to grow with God, looking back at our frontline workers, the divine feminine, and Jesus as the neighborhood dude, the pastors listen back through a few of the noteworthy parts from the top five and offer some insights and new reflections since they recorded them!
And, of course, Show and Tell: making scones, the Inauguration and Amanda Gorman, the wonders of Trello, sledding as a soul nurturing activity.

Let's start with some fun! We've been pondering what are our commonalities in the human experience, especially when we're so isolated from each other during these times. Pastors practice a few get-to-know-you questions that some of Circle of Hope's leaders have made. Favorite kitchen utensils? Make your bed in the morning? Getting a shower during these covid times? Learn a little more than you probably wanted to know ;).
Was it a Christian insurrection that happened on Capitol Hill? The pastors examine some of the rhetoric and prayers used by the Capitol Hill insurrectionists, and take a hard look at what kind of faith (or not-faith) could be involved in this political event. They delve deeper into Jesus' own ideas about pursuing a path of peace, that his kingdom is not of this world, and how he spoke to power. And, they get into how these sorts of events hurt the voice of Jesus and the term "Christian" entirely, and explore the ways to be the alternative to civic religion and nationalism.
Finally, some Spiritual Show and Tell: Howard Thurman, new friends with new faith, swinging on a swing-set (as an adult), a painted ceiling...All this and more on Resist and Restore.

Starting off with an email from a listener, reflecting on the podcast's recent conversations about guilt and shame. The listener reflects on A Christmas Carol and Ebenezer Scrooge, and what he must do in light of the three ghosts who bring him to a reckoning about his life. The pastors think on Scrooge and his confessions and choices. It's possible to make things right, even after you've been wrong. God's grace helps to transform us. The story also shows us how we can be the ghosts, prophetic voices showing ways of transformation and love.
We get into the tradition of Epiphany (the manifestation of God coming into the world) and especially baptism! The pastors share about their personal baptisms, but also the meaning of baptism, especially for Anabaptists like us, and, historically, the action in relation to state power. Baptism declares something that's really real, that we belong to God and Jesus is making a new family out of us. It's bigger than citizenship to a particular nation. Getting into the water with our bodies helps us realize our following of Jesus surpasses that of our linkages to state and political power. It offers a new idea of power structures, of love and compassion and servanthood as guided by following Jesus.
To wrap up the time, some Show and Tell: C.S. Lewis' science fiction, Disney-Pixar's movie Soul, the book Fire By Night, and journaling the bits of goodness and struggles of life, and how God is moving in them.

Starting off with some talkback, the pastors respond to a listener thinking through communal repentance. The pastors explore the power of community in the work toward wholeness and reconciliation, how being seen is important in the work of restoration.
Next up, the big topic! A little like the Daily Examen by Ignatius Loyola, a process involving looking over your day and praying about it with God, the pastors do a Yearly Examen, recounting the year's desolations and consolations. From the tragedy of police shootings and isolation to the miracles of Birthday Parades and baptisms, they dive in to ponder this roller coaster of a year and all the things to lament and praise.
To wrap up the time, some Show and Tell: Evan Mawarire and his revelations in jail, Michelangelo's Pietà, Andrew Yang's music, returning to the invitation of Advent every day.

We start off with some questions from our Sunday meetings YouTube chat. Someone asked on our livestream: how do we forgive someone when they aren't sorry? Forgiveness is always a miracle but it involves leaning on Jesus to forgive someone who isn't sorry or repenting. Repentance is the idea of turning around: Julie thinks about it like her neighborhood trash truck that has to turn around at a dead-end road. There's some deeper convo here about guilt and shame, and Jonny shares about the context of the shame culture that he grew up in. Tune in to hear more.
Later, pastors discuss the season of Advent and Christmas and what it truly means. This year, especially, we live it with feelings of grief and lament. Advent gives us space to just be real, and acknowledge what's real, and what's real is that life is hard but that Jesus is coming into the midst of it. His birth story isn't a precious moment, but one of displaced people, of refugees fleeing governmental forces. Advent isn't shallow joy. The coming of Jesus is all the more real to us when we can be real about naming what is wrong about what suffering is happening right now.
Ending with a little Spiritual Show and Tell: our Lamentations of Right Now events and Art Bucher's story of a little chestnut; the book Honest Advent by Scott Erickson; Miroslav Wolf; and the new meanings of a worship space in this time of separation.

Starting off with some talkback! We answer a few listener's questions, including a follow-up to our dialogue of love. When the experience of love is one-sided it's not a dialogue of love. It takes listening on both sides and the respect and dignity of both people to have a dialogue.
Later, we get deep about thankfulness. Thanksgiving, despite its many problematic narratives, can still be a time to remind us of how to discipline our gratitude. Along with this, we have a few lightning rounds of what we're grateful for.
We end with some Show and Tell: crossword puzzles, gardens, books, and more.

Starting off with some talkback! A listener responds to our election discussion and why is it that people can start from the same place of Jesus and yet move in such very different directions politically. Also, how does the future hope of a new humanity, of that future kingdom of God, affect our present action and movement in the world? Following this, the pastors get deep on a huge topic around Circle of Hope, the idea that dialogue is important and protects the gravity of our community. Our dialogue helps keep us together more than simply a set of doctrines or ideas about God, many of which were formulated in their time and place to bind people to community. Not everyone, especially now, is into a strict set of beliefs, and often there are many who have doubts, live in a gray space addressed better by listening and dialogue. A pastor, for instance, can have as many questions about faith as anyone else can! We need conversation, faith, love, Jesus and his grace to hold us. Lastly, some Show and Tell: adoring the stars and planets, discovering our spiritual ancestors, the Prophet Elijah and hope, and the pastoral wisdom of Dave Chappelle.

Episode 21: We Need a Better Way
It's a big podcast with a lot of big and difficult conversations, as big as this year of 2020 has been. From Walter Wallace Jr to the upcoming election, the pastors offer some insights, wisdom, prayers, and hopes about the looming social and political issues.
//Notes//
Litany for Walter Wallace by Raleigh Booze
Oh God, We mourn the death of Walter Wallace Jr. Another black man fallen unjustly victim to police brutality in the US Lord, we need a better way Lord we need your way
We grieve with Walter's family, his community of West Philadelphia, the country, and the world, We grieve with you Jesus Lord we need a better way Lord we need your healing
May we not jump to intellectualizing the deeply-rooted/historic problem of racism or condemn how others are processing their grief Lord we need a better way Lord give us humility
May we establish alternatives to dealing with mental health crises that don't resort to violence—that restore, transform and maintain dignity and respect for human life Lord we need a better way Lord convict us to transform the status quo
May we have the right words for the students we work with especially those touched by this situation Lord we need a better way Lord help us be present
Lord you gave us Jesus to show us the meaning of love We live in a world that often operates counter to everything that you are and have always been. Give us hope. Don't allow us to succumb to despair We ask all of these things in your name
Amen.

Circle of Hope pastors start out with some moments of insight from a recent women's retreat. Julie and Rachel report on lots of great conversations: from perfectionism and white supremacy, how God is freeing us from all our baggage, even about Monarch butterflies, among many other points of light. Next, the pastors get into their origin stories, answering a listener's question about what were they doing before being pastors. The pastors go through some of their journeys, and how that prior work and learning shaped who they are now. Finally, a little Show and Tell: 10 years of being a pastor, Third Day, little acts of kindness like baking for a neighbor, and The Soulmaking Room.

The Circle of Hope pastors get into some rich discussions on this week's episode. Thanks to our listeners who offered them some deep stuff to chew on! In the first Talkback section, the pastors discuss making space for questions, leaving room for wonder in our faith, and that "correct" answers, rights and wrongs, can often lead from faith into faithlessness. Our faith is much more than exactitude, but is built on the wonder and mystery of God who is much bigger than our answers could ever hold. A little later in the show, another listener asks them about what questions they hold about faith currently, what questions are left lingering for them, and what they are desiring from God right now. To top it off, a little Show and Tell: an event on anti-racism, Andorra Meadow, Sufjan Stevens, socially distant worship. All this and more on Resist and Restore!

Talking back on how to survive during this prolonged Covid crisis. No physical touch? Meetings all look the same, meeting fatigue? Days running together? Our pastors talk about the struggles and share some of our community's ways that they're enduring these tough times.
Jonny interviews Drew Hart who just released a new book "Who Will Be a Witness." Jonny delves deep with Drew on his new book, including Jesus' participation in political action, what Christian Supremacy is and how it affects the church, on white supremacy, economic injustice, and more. A deep conversation filled with fresh ways of thinking about the Bible and strategies for what social justice we can participate in now.
A little Show and Tell to finish out the episode: the joy of a son playing soccer, a book on the spiritual journey, the wonders of a fishtank, the swans return to the lake!

//Main Topic - Drew Hart Interview//
From Drew Hart's website (https://drewgihart.com/):
Drew G. I. Hart is an author, activist, and professor in theology in the Bible and Religion department at Messiah University with ten years of pastoral experience. Hart majored in Biblical Studies at Messiah College as an undergrad, he attained his MDiv with an urban concentration from Biblical Theological Seminary, and he received his PhD in theology and ethics from Lutheran Theological Seminary-Philadelphia.
Dr. Hart’s dissertation considered how Christian discipleship, as framed by Black theologies and contemporary Anabaptism, gesture the western Church towards untangling the forces of white supremacy and the inertia of western Christendom which have plagued its witness in society for too long. As two traditions that emerged from the underside of violent and oppressive western Christian societies, he found Black theologies and Anabaptism each repeatedly turning to the particularity of Jesus in the gospel narratives, ultimately calling for an ethic of liberation in the Black Church and an ethic of peacemaking in the Anabaptist tradition. Hart finds the practice of reading Jesus not only for the Church, but also against it, to be a vital dimension in salvaging western Christianity from itself [...]

The freedom to call God "Mother" when relating to her is worth saying over and over again. The pastors delve deep into God's relation to gender, or lack thereof, and how we can see God in a multitude of relational ways. Following this, the pastor's talk about Circle of Hope's vision for Village Parenting, and how to raise and foster children's faith by not reducing their faith development to moral lessons and instruction, and offering the space to creatively imagine how we worship and how we relate to God. Later a little Spiritual Show and Tell: Rich Mullins, Drew Hart, gardening, surfing... All this and more on Resist and Restore.

The Circle of Hope pastors start off with a little talkback from our recent Sunday online meeting. We've been passing the mike around at our Sunday online meetings, since we have a lot of great people who make up this body of ours. Recently our friend Pete talked about, among many things, speaking the truth in love and moments of feeling or staying small. The pastors discuss the question: "What encouragement from God do you find when you come against the tendency to become or stay small?" Later in the podcast, stories of joy! There's been a lot in the news that can make us feel despairing, so the pastors remind us of the joy that we can find in the strangest moments. Ben is mistaken for a bear. Rachel loves eating flowers. Julie gets meditative on painting a door. And Jonny finds laughter and jokes in random places. Later, some Spiritual Show and Tell with a few book and TV recommendations. All this and more on Resist and Restore!

This week is a special crossover episode with our dear friends at Color Correction, a podcast by Circle of Hope's Compassion Team—Circle Mobilizing because Black Lives Matter. The podcast starts off with a little introduction and discussion on why anti-racism is important to us at Circle of Hope. Hence, why it was so perfect to have both podcast crews join forces and talk about this! What follows are a series different interviews between members of Resist and Restore and Color Correction. In the first interview, Kris Eden interviews Jonny Rashid and Andrew Yang on growing up in immigrant families in the US, and in generally white enclaves. Following this, Bethany Stewart and Julie Hoke dialogue on growing up in a neighborhood of predominantly different race than you.

The pastors start out with some talkback from our Sunday meeting: how do you sustain friendships during this isolating time of covid? Following this are the wonderful and thoughtful minds of some of Circle's very talented people. Each of the pastors dive deep with some artists from our community on how their faith and art intersect, understanding more about their process, how they see God in their art, how their art not just engages their faith but also interacts and is inspired by the world around them. Lastly, the pastors wrap up with a little show and tell, a lot of love for the musical Hamilton and the poet Denise Levertov. All this and more on Resist and Restore!

This week, the Circle of Hope pastors start with some talkback from Instagram. We asked what does discernment mean to you? This was in sync with our season of Mapping that Circle of Hope is doing right now. Mapping involves what we as a church will decide to do over the next year and beyond, being guided by the Holy Spirit into the great things we'll do next. After this, Jonny interviews Julie on her experience with the Bible, from when she was younger to how she learned to engage with it in community. Lastly, the pastors celebrate the things that have recently inspired them. From Gerard Manley Hopkins, to clothing drives, worship songs, and the gift of play. All this and more on Resist and Restore!

This week, the Circle of Hope pastors answer a concerned listener who is considering how to act as a pacifist during these trying times. The Circle of Hope pastors share some of their heart, thoughts, and grief on police brutality and the protesting of George Floyd's tragic and unjustified death. They delve deep into their Christian response on this tragedy and Jesus' own alternative of justice and peace as an answer to state power.
But first, they do a little reflection on worshiping live and the wonder and praise delivered through digital means, the way that the pandemic crisis and the digital answer to it has made new ways for the Holy Spirit to show up.
They end the time with some brightness, sharing a little Spiritual Show and Tell. Jonny is inspired by Wilda Gafney's Womanist Midrash. Rachel has been reading some novels, including the award-winning book The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. Ben was lightened by the breeze blowing through his windows. Julie is inspired by a listener's inspiration brought on by the podcast itself!

The Circle of Hope pastor's start out with a little talkback, pondering answers to the question this week from our Instagram: "What strategies have you used to pay attention?" Setting timers, standing, coffee, making and keeping routines, doing chores, and many more are considered, as well as a few of their own ideas on what they do to help with focus and concentration. Later, the pastors do a deep dive into the Enneagram, discussing the great wisdom learned from it, their use of it as a helpful tool in spiritual development and personal growth. They regard some of the dangers and pitfalls as well. They end their time with what's been nourishing their souls: a poem from Malcom Guite, a Bible study and reflection tool, a new socially conscious Instagram, the Chicago Bulls...All this and more on Resist and Restore!

This week is a big episode!

This week, the pastors reflect on the talkback from our Palm Sunday breakout sessions that happened after our online meeting. Later, they address a listener's great question: "How is God being with me in the midst of suffering and tragedy better than God protecting me from suffering and tragedy?" A deep conversation ensues on suffering and how it relates to God, how we grow and spiritually develop and become more reliant on God by suffering, how we walk with Jesus in suffering and how he transforms it, and how as Christians we want to alleviate it as well. A lot of opinions, thoughts, and ideas. From Psalms to anecdotes, a little shade at theologians...it gets real! A little Spiritual Show and Tell ends the time. Ben savors a win in Settlers of Catan but sees the deeper connection to his family life. Jonny is loving the book Pure, and loves that a food magazine changed its mind about woks. Rachel has some internal insights from God; we're not just a means to an end but part of the end, and is working on her resurrection life. And Julie communes with God in her garden, and learns some lessons there.

Episode 6: Solidarity in Vulnerability
This week, the Circle of Hope pastors discuss the breakout session talkback that happened after our last Sunday Online Meeting. From fresh-baked bread offered to be delivered to doorsteps to people helping others navigate unemployment, there was a lot of sharing and giving in this time of need during our breakout sessions. Later, the pastors take a long deep look into practicing contemplative prayer and finding silence, exploring ways to engage these spiritual disciplines during this time of self-isolation and covid-19. Lastly, a little Spiritual Show and Tell! Ben on his love of birds and birdwatching; Rachel's big cartoonish somersault from a balance board; Julie appreciating our friend Joel's reflection on a tree; Jonny loves the ingenuity of protesting around Philadelphia City Hall for the concern of prisoner's during Coronavirus. Still out of the studio, we continue our remote dialogue. The pastors start out with a little "Showback" (see link to pictures below). They go through a series of nature pictures that people sent us, admire them, and talk nature and the beauty of Creation. Julie is inspired by Dutch author Etty Hillesum. Jonny gives us some cooking tips.

This week, the Circle of Hope pastors talk about what Lent offers. Lent is a spiritual gym. It's about going through the pain we are feeling and the distance we feel, acknowledging our own suffering and letting God meet us there and change us. They also expound on their need for community and village parenting, and share some personal stories about their experience in becoming church leaders. Later, a little Spiritual Show and Tell. Rachel brings her adoration of Ash Wednesday and some special stuff that happened during it. Ben reads a follow-up poem from last week's episode.
