On this podcast, I talk about all things simple-life on our hobby farm, homeschooling, and always about Jesus! I believe the remedy for clutter and chaos in our world, is Jesus. The more we desire Him, the less we desire the things of this world, and the easier it is to live more simply. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/simplylivingforhim/support

This is a message I hope you share far and wide. As we approach Resurrection Sunday, let's take a look at what really changes everything. What you believe about death will determine how you live. Do you really believe in the power of the Resurrection? Do you really believe that you don't earn your way to heaven? Maybe you've gone to church your whole life or maybe you've never stepped foot in one. There's so much hustle and bustle in our culture that many of us crave slow living. But today we are talking about slowing down and a slower lifestyle, not just as something we do as a reaction to our circumstances, but as a mindset. Join me as I fill you in on all that has been going on here lately, where I've been, and where my focus is these days. Be encouraged if you are feeling overwhelmed, just how to refocus to walk with Him and not this world.

God created seasons in nature. They show us His order and also His purposes. One season on the calendar depends on the next and there is often growth in different ways through each season. And just like in nature, God has created different seasons in our lives. We can't stop them but we can walk with Him through each one, whether a season of struggle or a season of praise.

Yes, I am still homeschooling and haven't thrown in the towel, but after 18 years of homeschooling, we have definitely changed how we homeschool. We no longer make homeschooling the center of our life and try to make life fit into our homeschool. But rather, we live life and then fit our homeschool into our real-life learning. Having graduated two and another this year, I feel confident in this way and know that keeping God at the center has truly been the most important thing we could do.Join me!Settled: A Women's Conference---FREE EVENT: Register here www.gracebiblechapelnj.org/settledGet my e-courses: www.simplylivingforhim.thinkific.com Get my devotional: https://amzn.to/2zB Get my homeschooling books! As the year comes to a close I have been thinking about this question quite a bit...what would my life look like if no one told me what it should look like? Except for God, of course. Let's face it, the world is bombarding us with daily information that influences us more than we realize. But in the end, our time with the Lord will really determine how we live. The enemy wants us to keep up with Joneses so we don't keep up with God. Listen in and be encouraged today to tune out the noise of this world and let Him dictate all you do.

"You can't take it with you." My Grandma always said this and it's part of the legacy that she passed down to me. As we have lived as a self-employed family for over a decade, we have seen the benefits of this lifestyle and know we aren't building a pension, or a bank account, but the Kingdom. Nothing I pass down to my family will ever last, but our greatest treasure is in things that can not be taken from us. Let's face it. In today's culture, the perfect home is glorified. The aesthetics are everything. The decor needs to stay on trend. And for many of us, we look around our homes and feel defeated. Yet, we are a society of abundance. We have more than we need. We should be thankful for the roofs over our heads and the places we call home.
Today I have a special guest, Jenny Nanninga, joining me as we talk about normalizing "normal" homes. Jenny lives in a smaller home with five children and gives a beautiful perspective on being content with what you have (even when discontentment creeps in) and gives practical advice for those of us to remember the purpose of our homes– our dwelling place. Make sure to listen to the end to hear her beautiful statement on this.
About Jenny:
Jenny is a wife and mother of five daughters living on the Central Coast of California. She and her family strive to love out God's calling on their lives to homeschool, serve the church, and love the world through hospitality while living small, in just 800 square feet! They love adventuring outdoors, exploring God's creation, pretending they have a small farm in suburbia with their chickens, cats, and dogs, and reading ALL the books. Jenny writes for different publications with a focus on homeschool, motherhood, and biblical womanhood. It is her desire to point others to Christ and to help them grow in their understanding of scriptures and to live fully in all that God has called them to.

Then we are talking about something everyone deals with- the comparison trap. We are having a little fun today talking about how I am NOT a type-A personality. I am a free-spirited, fly- by-the-seat-of-your-pants visionary who has to work hard to be disciplined and organized. And in a world that often feels like everyone is perfectionistic, I am not necessarily. Yet, we all have strengths and weaknesses and God works in us to either enhance our strengths or help our weaknesses. We all need to work with how God created us and join together as one body who ultimately will glorify God in all we do! I have a special guest on the podcast today and I know you will be encouraged! I talk to many parents who are all concerned with raising children in what seems like pretty chaotic and even dark times. Israel Wayne is joining me today to talk about knowing God for yourself, pointing our children to Jesus, and discipling them. He has a message of hope and optimism during these times! Israel Wayne is an author and conference speaker who has a passion for defending the Christian faith and promoting a Biblical worldview. He is the author of the books Questions God Asks, Questions Jesus Asks , Pitchin’ a Fit: Overcoming Angry and Stressed-Out Parenting, Education: Does God Have an Opinion? and Answers for Homeschooling: Top 25 Questions Critics Ask and Raising Them Up: Parenting for Christians. In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus tells us not to worry. He tells us to seek God first and He will give us all we need. This is not so easy to do as gas prices rise, grocery prices escalate, and our bank accounts are draining. Yet, Jesus tells us that our Heavenly Father knows what we need. So let's stop normalizing worry and normalize following God. Are you going to trust Him today or do you put your trust in the fleeting tangibles of this world? http://simplylivingforhim.com/2022/06/09/stop-normalizing-worry

Mostly though, I want to encourage you that no matter what the circumstances are right now, we do not need material possessions to be content- we have Jesus. So many of us fall into the trap of living for some arbitrary time in the future and say, "I'll be content when..." But we have so much to do right now at this moment. There is so much to learn from Paul's life- while in jail he wasn't waiting to be released to get busy for the Gospel and neither should we. Don't wait for the perfect conditions to live the life you have in front of you right now. Listen in, be encouraged, and seek Him first. That mindset will change everything.

According to the world, I am not really successful. I haven’t climbed any corporate ladders, achieved a certain financial bracket, or even have any letters after my name. This year has not gone according to plan, or shall I say, according to our homeschool plan. But perhaps it has gone just how God has planned. He has been near and life has been our best teacher. If you're in a place where you feel like you've failed or the year hasn't gone according to plan- whether you are a homeschooler or not- come listen and be encouraged that when things seem to fall apart, God redeems and puts them back together.

This time of year, I am always looking ahead to the next homeschool year saying, "I'm done with this year. But NEXT year will be the year where I finally get it together. Next year will be our best year." Ha. That perfect year never came after 16 years of homeschooling. Life is full of changes and challenges and we must live in the present and finish well, and not look ahead waiting for better times. Join me today as I encourage you to finish well in whatever season you are in.

Every season of parenting has its ups and downs, but each is so beautiful in its own way. Let's talk about a sensitive topic. We all know those people- the ones who always "one-up" others. They always seem to have done it better. Or have more. They always try to outdo you. Or maybe you've done it. Point the conversation back to yourself. Competing a little bit on the inside. Comparing. Today we are digging into Romans 12:9- 10, where it tells us to really love others genuinely and to "outdo" one another by honoring them. We are going to look at others in a whole new light and understand how to truly love others. The outcome will be a lot less mental drama and, instead, real relationships with others as God intended them to be.

When our lives begin to swirl out of control from chaos and clutter, we often want to just throw in the towel. We get paralyzed with stuff, and we end up doing nothing. Today I am sharing a time when I wanted to give up (well, several actually!) and what God did to show me I was focused on the wrong things. I believe this will automatically simplify your life, and help you to find peace in this often chaotic world. Make sure to listen all the way to the end for some encouragement and focus before you throw in the towel!

With the holiday season approaching it’s easy to get caught up in what the world shows us hospitality should look like. But there is a big difference between entertaining and hospitality. One focuses on “look what I can do!” The other focuses on “what can I do for you? “ People will remember how they feel in your home far more than your decor or perfect recipes. Let’s discuss how we can share Jesus with those who enter our doors! http://simplylivingforhim.com/2021/11/20/entertaining-vs-hospitality-what-matters-most/

As the news headlines tell us we are facing shortages of goods and more wait times for things we "need" I am trying to get back to simple more than ever these days. Because the mindset of filling our lives with stuff and having it instantaneously can also spill into our spiritual lives. We think we need to be filled with things other than God. We also find ourselves impatient when God may want us to wait on His timing. In these pandemic times, I think we have really been given a chance to get back to what truly matters most. This week my husband's dear grandmother, age 99, passed away. She was one of the most admired women in my life and the lessons I learned from watching her live life surpassed even the nuggets of wisdom she shared in words. One of the biggest lessons I will remember is when I asked where was her favorite place to be –she had been splitting time between the north and the south at the time– and her response, "My favorite place to be is wherever I am at the moment." And even if you aren't a homeschool mom, I can imagine most of you have said these statements at some point about something in your life. Today, we are going to really dig into that statement and turn it on its head as we look at Who is enough: Jesus. We are NOT enough. We can not DO enough. My grandmother always said, "You just never know..." when something unforeseen happened. And all I could hear was her voice in my head this morning as I read through my prayer journal from last year at this time, and was taken aback by the things I had prayed for. Some are non-issues at this point. They never even happened. Others were answered in ways I had never imagined. And some were completely upended by the pandemic. In December of 2019, I just had no idea when I wrote out my prayers for 2020 what would be in store. I had the privilege of sitting down today to talk with my friend, Ann Dunagan, from Mission-Minded Families. Her story of raising seven children, engaged in full-time ministry, and her JOY in Jesus is so inspiring. This is one of the most important messages I want you to hear. We often get it backward- we try and try to better ourselves, do more, have more, be more. Do you fear the future? I know I have. But today we are fighting fear with God's Word and remembering that there is no fear of this world when we fear the Lord. As Christians, we know how things will turn out. So we need not get caught up in the "what if's" when we have confidence in Christ. http://simplylivingforhim.com/2020/08/26/no-more-fear-of-the-future-ep-189/ Get my new e-course: www.simplylivingforhim.thinkific.com Get my devotional: amzn.to/2SfC26Q Join our FREE Online Community (Monthly Bible studies, and more!) www.simplylivingforhim.com/community

The world tells us to be happy we must, "find ourselves" and it often creates an identity crisis. We are looking for ourselves, feeling a bit left out, and like we don't fit in, and we forget we have already been found in Christ. If we want to know ourselves, we must first know our God. Our identity is as a child of God. Be secure in that. Don't get lost looking for what you already have. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1RH

You would never allow friends, acquaintances, and even strangers into your home to talk to you all at once about their politics, families, opinions, and even share their favorite recipes, photos of their vacation, all while you were spending time with your family or doing your work. But that is what happens when you scroll that newsfeed during the day. We see everything that is going on in everyone's life and we even get dragged into arguments we weren't meant to fight.
Who are you allowing in your home? Better yet, what are you allowing in your mind? Times have changed and the amount of information we are bombarded with at any given time is exponentially more than at any time in history. And it is affecting us big time.
Let's see what the Bible says about what we fill our minds with and who we allow into our homes. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1Py

Slow is a counter-cultural word these days. In a world that demands quick and instant, the idea of patience and endurance is often looked down upon. But throughout Scripture, it is evident that we all will struggle at some point, and it won't always be fixed right away-especially during these times when everyone wants things "fixed." May we as a generation be remembered not for what we suffered but for how we handled it. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1Pa

In these past few months, during some of the worst of times, something miraculous has happened to me. As a former worrier, I have found complete peace. I haven’t worried at all. Sickness and finances used to have a hold on me, but I have found that during this time, I have not been plagued by any worries, even though we are surrounded by fears each day. I can only attribute it to God working in me. Today I want to talk about how God doesn’t always rescue us from our circumstances but rescues us from ourselves in them. What a fun episode! I was able to sit down with my 15-year-old son and talk all about the journey we have had from his challenging and active early years, to growing into a young entrepreneur. If you have a “spirited” child, then you will be encouraged that you can channel that energy into good and see their passions unfold. Most of all you can show them that God has created them uniquely for a purpose– energy and all! A small business has given him so many skills already to prepare for life. So many things have happened lately, but I believe they all intersected at the same time perfectly so that I could turn my gaze back to Jesus and get back to simple. Do we really trust God and believe His every word? Do we say we trust Him and want to be in His will, but really want our own outcome? When we live from the Spirit and not the flesh, we have the freedom to know that God is in control, and no matter what the outcome, we are where He wants us. And when we operate out of a place where the Spirit controls us and not the flesh, it will affect every single part of our lives. How you treat people. The decisions you make. Our world certainly glorifies the Martha lifestyle- busy, busy, busy- take a look at Pinterest and Instagram and we see a world of Marthas. Those who can cook, sew, decorate, throw parties, and do it all with perfection are pretty much considered the epitome of modern-day success in homemaking and womanhood. You don’t see many Pinterest posts of a woman, completely oblivious to how the “photo” looks because she is sitting at her Savior’s feet. Maybe her hair is askew, her makeup absent, but she has a glow about her that comes from being at his feet. And it is more beautiful than any photo.
In a world that focuses on busyness and a picture-perfect life, Jesus tells us that Mary chose the better. And even more importantly, it will not be taken away from her. Let's talk about how we can live more simply when we live like Mary. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1FX

Have you allowed God's Word to transform your life? Or is your time in the Word merely to check it off your list or to do your Bible study "homework?" Do you go to His Word with an agenda in your mind of what you'd like Him to tell you? Or do you truly want to get to know who God is? God's Word is living and active and powerful and He will transform our way of thinking and in turn our actions and behaviors. He will transform our lives from the inside out. Often we make God so small and our own little lives so big, when in reality, if we focused on truly getting to know our great and majestic God in His Word, we would fall down on our faces. We would take our eyes off of our little daily struggles and truly get to know the One who created us. Join me today as I talk about how God has completely transformed my life and be encouraged.

I am beyond excited about today's podcast to introduce you to a family that is doing just that.
Yvette Hampton and her family left their comfy lifestyle in California three years ago, sold their home and most of their belongings, and hit the road to answer the calling on their life. As a homeschooling family with a husband/father who had worked in Hollywood, they knew that God was calling them to make a feature-length film about homeschooling and they have been working on this project ever since.
Today I am talking to Yevette about what it is like to truly simplify by getting rid of all your stuff, life on the road, focusing on God and His calling, and also all about this AMAZING movie that they have produced. You will be inspired and encouraged.

Life is short. So why do we waste it on details that will turn to dust one day? As our society gains more and more convenience, we also gain more and more confusion and distraction from what we are really supposed to be living for. I have learned many lessons lately and one that stands out is how important it is to maintain a posture of surrender rather than striving. Surrender doesn't mean sit back and do nothing, in fact, you will get more done (in God's strength) than you ever imagined. In a world of planners and to-do lists and folks always trying to control their lives and strive for greater achievement, it is actually comforting to know every detail is controlled by God and ordained before time began. Simple living is much easier to reach in a life surrendered to God. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1Cz

We have officially dropped my daughter off at college after homeschooling grades from K-12. What a surreal experience! And I have learned so much! I was also blindsided by some things, however. So grab your coffee and sit down with me today, as I want to share with you as a girlfriend- the good, the bad, and everything in between...to encourage you to feel all the feels and to walk through it all in God' strength. There is so much going on at this time that is exciting, scary, happy, sad, and all of it is ok! It gives us more of an opportunity to lean on the Lord.
I also want to share with you how my perspective has changed and I am even more laser-focused to simplify my life than ever!

Recently I posted on Instagram about the idol of homeschooling. It received quite a bit of feedback and I wanted to talk further about it today.
Whether you are a homeschooler or not, we all can relate to getting distracted by the things we love or the things we do- before we know it, those things have been put on a pedestal while we have lost sight of Who should really be on the pedestal- the Lord.
Let's stop giving glory to anything but God in our lives. Let's shed the identity of "homeschool mom," "soccer mom," "working mom," "single lady" and stand in our identity as a CHILD OF GOD! Let's shine our light for Him and not for homeschooling or whatever it is we do. Because ultimately, it is He who causes all things to work in us. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1Af

Today I am talking about renovations. No, not the kind you see on HGTV, but the kind that matters beyond our earthly homes. We are talking about our heart and souls.
As I see the DIY craze and the emphasis on our homes in our visually saturated society, I often wonder what our world would be like if we spent that amount of time and resources on our insides. On our hearts. You see, years ago I gave up trying to create a picture-perfect home, became satisfied with what we had, and instead turned my attention toward my soul work.
Renovations are hard work and often messy, but the good news is, God is the one who does the work in us, and we simply have to live a life of surrender. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1yE

In the middle of a super busy and often overwhelming season of life right now, I am choosing to intentionally slow down. I have found this to be so necessary right now and it is so renewing and refreshing. I need to slow down in order to restore and in order to hear His voice above my own- that is often going a million miles a minute in my mind.
I am talking today about how summer is a great time to slow down and truly live, instead of rushing to the next thing. And no matter what season of life you are in...a busy mom of littles, or getting ready to send your baby off to college like I am, God can give you all the strength you need to slow down. I am also talking a bit about the hard stuff lately...how this summer is far from "normal" but how I am finding solace in the slow moments. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1ya

Hospitality means focusing on your guests and how you can serve them. It is quite different from entertaining which says, "Look what I can do." We often think that our joy is dependent on our circumstances- when things are going well, there's peace, and all is still, we have joy. We feel like God has given us favor. But what about when the storms are swirling around us? Are we being punished? Do we not have enough faith? When we say we surrender our lives to God, we must really mean it. Often, I say it but I think I secretly mean, ok God, I surrender so now you will bless me. Not always so. We must recognize that God is in the storms as much as the stillness. We all know that expectations usually don't line up with reality in the end. We often have a picture in our mind of how things are supposed to be and then feel let down that the reality hasn't lined up what we had hoped.
Today though, I want to dig even deeper into our expectations. Is it possible that expectations are actually distracting us from our true purposes? Are we so busy living for an expectation that we aren't living the life right in front of us? Are we living for an ideal and not embracing the here and now?
Our one true and greatest expectation in life is the hope we have in Jesus and the reality of eternity. And through that expectation, which is the only one that will provide everlasting joy, will we live out each moment purposefully here on earth. With our eyes on God and what He is doing in us and through us, we can let go of our prideful expectations and humbly live each day for God.

Is the Bible a priority in your family? Do you teach it daily to your children? Do they see you as a lover of God's Word? All of these things I have been convicted of over the years. We have gone from not reading the Bible together to now making it a priority daily. How that has looked has changed over the years depending on the season we are in, and I am sharing all the ways we have taught the Bible in our family. Even how we taught our kids their school solely from God's Word for one year. I have seen what it is like to live with and without the Bible. There is nothing more valuable than equipping the next generation with the Truth. Our culture is a battlefield right now and the most important thing our children can have in navigating that world is the absolute Truth of God's Word! It is not enough for them to hear the truth, or to know the truth, but to WALK in it and live it! (3 John 4) https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1sf

The original group chat was a coffee klatch. ;) Nowadays though most conversations are in an online space. And it has become one dimensional. So much is lost in the translation without eye contact, real-life connection, and physical presence. Today I want to talk about how technology has changed (and complicated) our relationships. On my quest to build a real and authentic community that is centered on godly relationships, I am sharing about my own struggle with too much tech and not enough real life. I am too quick to text, email, and comment, but not reach out in real life as often. And things often become more complicated when we isolate or keep our distance. I want to challenge you to simplify your life by going back to the way relationships used to be- stop over a friends house, meet up for lunch, or gather around the kitchen table for some good conversation. The key to living undistracted is to declutter all the things that are taking your attention away from what matter most. But first, you need to decide, what matters most?
The Bible tells us to love the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. We are to seek Him first and not to gratify the desires of the flesh. We are to live undivided. But so often we don't even realize how the things of this world are causing us to look away from God and distract us. And guess what? That is exactly where Satan wants us.
Join me today as we talk about becoming undistracted in a world that is constantly screaming for our attention. Fix your eyes on the unseen and focus less on the temporal, so that you may truly live. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1la

This is one of my favorite podcasts that I have recorded. I hope you listen and are encouraged!
The new year is always full of promise, resolutions, and plans. We have high hopes on THIS being the year that we will get it right. And very slowly as the months go by, we tend to fall back into old patterns and habits. And we begin the very same cycle next December/January to resolve again, to make THIS year the year we get it together.
As Christians, we know that we will never have it fully together this side of heaven. We are on a journey, and while the plans and resolutions we make can be helpful, many times the focus is on US and what WE can do for a better year. Resolve this year to focus on Jesus. What can HE do through you in the new year? Better yet, what does HE want to do? Many times the plans look very different from yours, but they are always best.https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1kM

I have been asked about homeschooling high school so many times, so today I am addressing the topic...with the caveat that I am NOT the expert and I will never proclaim my way is the way to go! This is merely OUR experience with homeschooling high school and I am learning along the way. Having one graduating this year, and three more behind, there will be more to learn ;)
The most important thing to do in homeschooling high school is to PRAY- seek the Lord in all you do, and you will succeed. I never, ever, thought we would homeschool high school, and here we are with two college acceptances under our belt. But even without those, my goals have always been to raise an adult who loves the Lord wholeheartedly and seeks His will.
Our journey has never been about achieving the perfect test score, scholarship, or college acceptance, but to raise our children to be disciples of Christ.
You’re not developing a transcript. You’re developing a person. Focus on who your child is, not just a paper credential.
I am addressing a bit about the "how to's" but mostly the heart of the matter- we don't have to over complicate things and we don't have to stress. God is in control! https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1kv

Today was a hard topic but necessary. I have struggled recently with so many different things, and have found that God is showing me more and more just how important it is to BE REAL with others. We need to share our joys and share our sorrows. And we need to do it with complete honesty.
We all deal with different things and we all deal with them differently...but in those differences, we find our unique places in the relationships that God gave us. We aren't all meant to be the same and that is the beauty of the body of Christ.
Romans 12:15 says, "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." Let us purpose to live that out each day. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1jU

The first commandment is clear that we are to worship the One true God and Him alone. We bow to Him and serve Him. Yet, every single day I fail when I start to let other things occupy my thoughts and my time, and ultimately, they risk taking my eyes off God.
It is very easy is in our culture to chase after false gods. Money, possessions, homes, jobs, health, and other things all become the object in which we strive for. Often times, my own self, becomes the god I serve first.
Yet, if we truly live out the first commandment and honor God above all, everything else falls into its proper place.
Want to simplify? Obey the first commandment. When God is first, everything else flows out from Him and is no longer the object of our desire, but an outflow of our desire for His Kingdom.

With the advent of home and garden TV shows, Internet feeds, and social media floods, it has become normal for us to focus on how things look. But we forget, that is not what this life is about.
Recently I posted this on my facebook page:
What if you lived in a place where no one cared what you wore- they didn’t even see it. You just wore what was comfortable. It could be the same thing day after day and it wouldn’t matter. You were clothed. And they just saw YOU. What if you lived in a place where folks came over to each other’s homes just for the sake of visiting or helping or loving. It didn’t matter if you served the richest of meals or crackers and water. Those were just additions to a visit. Not the purpose. What if you lived in a place where your home was simply a shelter. A place to rest your head, enjoy company, and to sleep soundly. But how it looked was never an issue. It was simply your dwelling place. What if you lived in a place where no one compared. No one envied. Each was working for the good of the others. What if you lived in a place where the center of your life was truly the Gospel. Without all of the other things distracting you, and daily life consisted of being steeped in God’s Word and then living it out. Why do we spend so much time on the details? Why do we add the Gospel to our lives instead of living our lives from the Gospel?

It's never about the stuff. Having less stuff or less clutter doesn't necessarily bring you more joy in and of itself, but what it does is eliminate the things that are hindering you from realizing the true joy you already have!
As Christians, we already have joy in Jesus. We have our ultimate contentment and satisfaction...getting rid of clutter only helps us to see the things that matter most.https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1dP

Since as long as I can remember, I have had that inner voice that has plagued me. It usually comes in the middle of the night or when my mind starts asking, “What if?…”
Jesus has been the answer for me in every way and today I want to talk about how my struggle with anxiety has changed over the years, how simplifying my life has been key, and how I am learning to let God prevail over the voice of fear.
(Please note this is just my story…everyone has a different story in their struggle. I am simply sharing what has helped me and what my journey has look like…it is not to say know the answer for your journey…but I hope to encourage you in some way and most importantly, to point you to Jesus. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1cZ

We began our thirteenth year of homeschooling this year. If you know the backstory, then you know this is nothing short of a miracle really. It has been a week full of reflection, and I wrote this earlier in the week: "No more first days. No more planning the curriculum. No more thinking, …"well if this doesn’t work, we can always change it next year…” There is no next year. This is it. We have such a story to tell. Our journey has been life-changing and very little has had to do with school. And I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It has been full of ups and downs. But I can’t believe this chapter is closing."
Today on the podcast I am talking about our methods over the years, what we have learned, and how we have changed. It has sure been a journey. And even though it is nearing the end for my oldest, we have quite a bit more to go...thankfully...I'm not quite ready for it all to be over yet! ;) https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1aL

These days it is much too easy to let our worldview be shaped by our Instagram or Facebook feeds. We are bombarded by so many voices, but it is necessary to have God's voice louder than the world's. And the way to do that is to listen to Him first and foremost each day. We can't live out God's Word if we aren't reading it. We can't thirst and hunger for it if we don't whet our appetite.
We must look at everything this world offers through the lens of God or we will end up floundering from one thing to the next. It will all sound true unless we are grounded in the only Truth.
So ask yourself, who are you listening to first these days? God or man? Is your worldview more influenced by others or by God's truth? Join me today as talk about this important subject and we choose to listen to His voice first. https://wp.me/p7OB5f-1ab

Today I am talking about how our online and instantaneous culture is changing us. And is it for the better. Are we missing out on the behind the scenes stuff, the real-life connections, and the blessings in the waiting?
I recently wrote this post on facebook and it resonated with many folks.
"In an age of Amazon Prime, we forget that things are done right, often take time. Instant gratification isn’t necessarily better.
In an age of Pinterest, we forget that life isn’t always picture-perfect. It’s the moments behind the scenes that shape us. In an age of Twitter, we forget that things worth reading often take up more space than 140 characters. Deep thoughts and real dialogue often require many more words.
In an age of Facebook, we forget that life isn’t lived on a screen looking for likes and thumbs up, but out there in the real world. In real time. Often with no one watching. Those are where the best moments usually take place.
In an age of YouTube, we forget that life is more than an edited version. The real-life video reel is filled with bloopers and blunders and unfiltered moments.
Don’t forget the age we live in. It has changed our perspective. What we see in the media has started to shape our worldview. But real people and real life and real conversations and really hard stuff- that’s reality. Enjoy the snippets of social media but don’t get lost in them. Instead, take time for real life. In real time." So join me today as we talk about this important and necessary subject! https://wp.me/p7OB5f-178

Years ago childhood was different. There was less technology, less materialism, and less busyness. Today's kids are faced with an unprecedented amount of all these things. How do we reconcile the culture we live in with their childhood?
We don’t give kids enough credit for being able to enjoy the simple. We think they need gadgets and entertainment. But deep down, in the nature of a child, I think they have the capacity to appreciate so much more than we realize.
What do I mean by a simple childhood? A childhood that is raising our children to be focused on Jesus and getting rid of the clutter and fluff that distracts us from our purpose. We are raising disciples, not staging photo.
Join me today as we talk about the issues facing our kids and how to keep it simple.

Today I declared it a little bit of a "mish-mash" of topics on the podcast. I am starting out by discussing the idea of how our culture cultivates an atmosphere of instant gratification (hello, Amazon Prime!) and no longer are we able to wait gracefully or see the benefit of a long and sometimes difficult journey.
In homeschool and in life, there is no instant-gratification. It is sometimes a few steps forward and sometimes a few steps backward...and that's okay. That is where we learn and most importantly, grow. And grow closer to God.
I also talked about the new IDEA we are doing for our family Bible time that I am so excited about! And I also am talking a little bit about how to keep our summer slow and simple...

In a visually saturated society, we are becoming more and more worldly in that we are focused on outward appearance before inward transformation. However, God wants to make us beautiful from the inside out.
How is our home a reflection of God's love? Is it because we have the perfect decor or because they see Jesus in our homes? Do you give the illusion that you have it all together on the outside but are falling apart on the inside? Do people see your clothes or that you are clothed in humility?
Are you so filled up on Him that it flows to the outside?
The most beautiful thing another person will recognize about you or your home or your family...is Jesus. www.simplylivingforhim.com

I remember the care my Grandma took in her things. She lived in a very simple space and had very little "stuff" but what she had, she cherished. Nowadays, we live in a society that has every single thing we want available to us in an instant-- and I think this has caused us to value our things less and less...because everything is so easily replaceable. This contributes to clutter and discontent even more. What if we went back to that mindset and really cherished what we had, used it until it was really worn, and were really good stewards of what we have? What if we stopped bringing more and more "stuff" into our homes and just cherished what is there already?
Join me today as I talk about living in a "replaceable" culture and really cherishing our things.

Today I am exploring the topic of modern day life and if it is really easier than the days of long ago. The pioneer families (you all know I love Little House on the Prairie!) truly had to work every minute of the day in order to survive. And here in 2018 we have all the modern conveniences we can imagine, and yet, as a society we are busier than ever. Why is that? Why are we stressed and discontent when we should have more time than ever in our lives?
I am also talking about how we can be a good steward of the resources God has given us. It isn't a mistake that you were born in this time period in history and God wants us to use what we have been given and use it well.. www,simplylivingforhim.com

I am also sharing a very personal and life-changing (yet shameful) story of how I became more aware of my words and thoughts toward others.
We will be talking about gossip. But not just the fact that we shouldn't gossip or why it is bad. But WHY do we do it? Are we truly honoring others above ourselves when we choose to speak (or even think!) negatively about them? And what are we teaching our children when we ourselves are not modeling the humble attitude that Christ taught us? Not only are gossip, complaining, and negative words detrimental to our relationships, they reveal a deeper more ugly side of our flesh. But there is hope...The Spirit transforms us!

Today I am asking you ONE question that may change everything for you. Recently, I started asking this question of everything I do and it has changed me. Do you ask yourself this question?
*Note: In this episode I mention a verse (John 17:4), but didn't explain the context of it. I should have given the background first. Here is an excerpt from Bible.org to add to what I said about the verse: "Christ’s aim in His earthly ministry was to glorify the Father by accomplishing the work which He gave Him to do (John 17:4). Now, He prays that the Father would glorify Him with the eternal glory that He shared with the Father before the world was, so that He in turn would glorify the Father (John 17:1, 5). That prayer assumes Jesus’ deity and His full equality with the Father (John 10:30), who does not share His glory with any creature (Isa. 42:8; 48:11). As Jesus boldly claimed (John 5:23), “All will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.”
While none of us can do what Jesus did when He glorified God by offering Himself on the cross, we can learn from His example. The apostle Paul said that his aim was that Christ would be exalted in his body, whether by life or by death (Phil. 1:20). He said that our aim in whatever we do should be to glorify God (1 Cor. 10:31). To make God’s glory your aim means dethroning self and enthroning God. It means submitting to His mighty hand in all that happens, including persecution (1 Pet. 5:7-10). Contrary to the false “prosperity gospel,” God doesn’t exist to make you happy. Rather, you exist to glorify Him. Adopting that mindset will strengthen you to do His will in this hostile world."

Today's podcast is a topic I address often but it never seems to be enough. So many women are living a life comparing to others. I, myself, included have done this yet the past few years I have really come to terms that God has created each of us to live a life uniquely designed for His purpose. We all have a different role to play, and when I look to what someone else is doing I am denying the unique role God has set apart for me in His perfect plan. My life isn't supposed to look like anyone else's and that is exciting! We actually are sinning when we begin to look at someone else's home, marriage, kids, or whatever it is and desire it for ourselves. There is a difference between admiring and coveting.
My ministry, my family, my home...none of it is supposed to look like anyone else's. As long as I am following God in all I do, then I am content in that.
The one thing we all do have as a common purpose is to glorify God in all we do! Yet, how we do that in each of our lives may look different. Stop looking to others lives and start living yours! It is uniquely designed by God to glorify Him in all you do! www.simplylivingforhim.com www.simplylivingforhim.com/retreats

When you hear the word simple do you think minimalism? Living simply doesn't mean you have to live in a tiny house, a farmhouse, or even the country. You can live simply right where you are. It is more about the state of your heart than the state of your home. Because I believe when your heart is turned toward Jesus, you will naturally desire less of the things of this world.

All of human history has always had 24 hours in each day, and for many of those centuries most time was spent merely surviving. Yet, our culture is constantly saying we don't have enough time! This is not a “financial advice episode” but an encouragement episode. We are not going to tell you how to make money or start a business, but get to the heart of the matter.
Today I have my very favorite guest with me–my hubby, Steve! We have been a one-income family since early on in our marriage and I wanted to share our story to encourage others that it is possible to survive and THRIVE as a one-income family. We were married right out of college, had a baby that first year, lost three jobs, had four kids, and homeschooled- all while remaining a one-income family. God has truly provided for our needs when we sought Him first. We are not saying our way is the right way to do things (only God can tell you what is right for your family) but we are sharing how we have managed to listen to God above society’s standards for the past 17 years.
God has given Steve a thriving business as our sole provider and has even provided opportunities for me to contribute along the way. A simple lifestyle with our eyes on God has made all the difference.
A Few Things to Mention: We use Samaritans Ministries for Healthcare Coverage Steve is the sole provider of our family with his business, Farmhaus Studios. He is a graphic designer who worked in the advertising field for many years before the instability of it all led us to start a family business and become self-employed. He now is able to use his talents in all areas of media- illustration, web, marketing, etc. And he is able to let God “run” his business 😉 Over the years, God has given me the opportunity to contribute to our family as well through my work at Simply Living for Him and Bible Based Homeschooling. He has continued to make it work for us by allowing me to have income as well, and we know He has provided to allow us to stick to our convictions to be home with our family. Pre-kids I worked in the health/medical industry and have a degree in Home Economics with a concentration in Nutrition. We see God’s hand in our entire journey to begin as a stay at home mother and now a stay at home family. All glory goes to Him alone!

Anyone who knows me knows that I do not like to be too busy. I enjoy the simple and slow living, but even for me, it is easy to get caught up in rushing through each day and before we know it a day leads to a year and a year leads to years.
And we ask, "Where did the time go?"
Our life purpose is to glorify God and that means doing so in each moment. Satan wants nothing more than for us to be distracted by the busy so we can't hear Jesus's voice. In a world that is obsessed with hustle, I am encouraging you to listen to His voice and do not conform to the world (Romans 12:2). Live in His timing, not the world's.

The difference between hospitality and entertaining is that one says, "Look what I can do." The other says, "What can I do for you?"
I have evolved greatly in this area over the years from seeking the perfect home for my guests, to wanting them to simply feel God's love in my home above all else. There was a time when I wouldn't dare want someone to stop over unexpectedly because things weren't perfect, to now opening my home any time any day.
I would rather people leave my home saying, "Karen loves Jesus," rather than, "Karen has a perfect home."
Every time you open your door, you are ministering. Remember that as you prepare to open your home this holiday season.

This episode is for homeschoolers and non-homeschoolers. Today I am chatting about the things I really want you to know about homeschooling. For the past twelve school years, homeschooling has really evolved in my life from something I ran from to something I couldn't imagine not doing. I am an advocate for homeschooling and am passionate about encouraging others to see it in a light that isn't quite as complicated as it seems.
Join me today to hear all the ins and outs, the good, bad and ugly, and why we continue on this journey that often has taught us about so much more than academics.
Episode Highlights
•It won't save your children
•I believe it is best for MY family. What about yours?
•It isn't picture perfect and it is not supposed to be. We are discipling our children not staging a photo
•Academics is merely a portion of the big picture
•You don't have to have a teaching degree
•Your children will not be socialized normally and thats a GOOD thing -
•The hard days are necessary
•You aren't equipped to homeschool
•It will cost you. Every hour you put into it has an eternal investment beyond compare.

Story time! On the podcast today, I am telling a story. It's a story filled with twists and turns and often cries to God in times of questioning. It's a story of His faithfulness and His plans unfolding in His time.
Our journey to our dream home is a story of God's provision and His faithfulness. It is a story of trusting no matter what and being content no matter where. And now we will use it for His glory and a testimony of His faithfulness.
And the story isn't over. This is about so much more than a house, but we are building a home and a place to share God's love.
Whatever journey you are on right now, whether you feel there is no end is sight, or prayers that don't seem to be answered, I hope this episode encourages you to keep pressing on no matter where God leads. His plans are always best.

Today I am talking about our media saturated culture and how it causes us to be discontent or to covet. This in turn causes us to break a commandment. Everywhere we look there are images showing us what our lives should look like- but are they representing the truth?
You have a choice in what you put into your mind and what things will transform your mind. Are you allowing good transformation or worldly transformation?
Are you being transformed in your thinking by the images you see in this world or by the renewing of your mind through His Word?
Choose to be saturated with God's Word and not social media. Fill your mind with truths, and your life will reflect that accordingly.

Today is a bit different of an episode. Instead of my originally planned recording, I ended up “winging it” after a chaotic week. I am sharing how I remembered to seek Jesus amidst the chaos in what has been a week filled with trials. I saw myself slipping this week, and thankfully realigned my eyes back on Him.Whether you are walking through huge trials or chaos, I hope this encourages you to keep your eyes on Him through it all.

In a media-saturated culture, it is very easy to focus on making a house that looks picture-perfect.
The amount of time and energy spent on making things "look" perfect is astounding. Yet none of those things will go with us into eternity. We need to be investing our time, focus, and energy on what goes on inside those four walls of that house and building our family first.
Relationships matter into eternity and material possessions will perish.
I would rather people come to my house, and not remember the decor, but remember that they encountered Jesus.
Today I am talking about if we are building a house or a home. Is our focus, time, and thoughts on the people inside the four walls of our home or on the way that house looks?
The most beautiful part of a home, is when it is filled with Jesus.

Today I am asking you all to join me as we commit to getting in the Word every day. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind and by listening to your Creator. There is no greater One to listen to these days...yet, we find ourselves seeking so many other things (and people's ideas) first!
My goal and mission is always to point to Jesus and I have really been passionate about pointing people directly to His Word these days.
Christians everywhere are becoming complacent about their time in the Bible. We say we are too busy or it's too difficult, but what could be more important that listening to God Himself? And Who better to teach us? We must make time for Him first, and then fit everything else is. Not vice versa.
Let's vow to dig into the Word. Let's encourage one another. In our culture and in our world, now more than ever, we need to be listening to the Word of God and seeking Him above all.

Today I want to talk about busy. In a culture that equates busyness with success, I want to free you from the burden of a full schedule but an empty heart.
So many of us are running around trying to keep up with the world around us. Life is short. Let us be good stewards of the amount of time God has given us. Let us be busy doing things that are fruitful. Let us fill up on life givers, not life depleters.
I hope you come away from this podcast evaluating how to make the best use of your time, and most of all how to honor God with that time.

It is easy to lose sight of the important things in our world today. The distractions are constantly pulling us away and before we know it our focus shifts from the important to the secondary details. Our culture is saturated with filling up on excess, seeking pleasures and comfort, and we forget why we are doing the things we do. Today I am talking about keeping the main thing, the main thing- whether it is in the big things or the little things, let's purpose to fix our eyes on the things that matter.

Whether you are thinking about it, in the midst of it, or perhaps running away from it (like I was 12 years ago!), today I want to talk about the calling of homeschool.
How do you know if you are called to homeschool? What if you don't want to homeschool, but feel like you should? What if you want to homeschool, but feel like you shouldn't?
All of us have had these questions run through our mind if we have ever even considered homeschooling. Today I am sitting down to get real with you and discuss my story to hopefully encourage you to follow the path God has chosen for your family.

Today I am doing something a little different on the podcast. I sat down with no notes or agenda, but asked the Holy Spirit to lead me in what to say. And today is the day He wanted me to share the truth.
I often say that if you know me now, but didn't know me 20 years ago, it is like walking in half way through a movie, and you're at the part in the movie where the story has turned around, and you're heading toward the happy ending. But I wrestle. I have struggled with God because I want to to be 100% real and authentic with people in my life (especially folks who only see a "snippet" of me in Internet-land) but I also don't want to relive the past or share some of the awful nitty-gritty details.
So today, I am keeping it real and letting you know that there is a huge redemption story behind what you see. When you see pretty pictures on Instagram or hear a touching story about what my hubby did for me that day, it's because I can't help but see God's power in every moment. Because my life is a living testimony of redemption. If He can redeem me, then there is hope for anyone.
And when you think I have it all together, know that I was broken into a million pieces, and HE holds me together now.
Listen in as I share how God shined a light in the dark places in my life and I will only give Him the glory in every breath I take for the rest of my life, and into eternity.

I am not naturally organized or tidy, but God has changed me in so many ways over the years. Join me as I talk about my journey to live more simply and what it truly means to me. What does it really mean to live simply? Do you have to follow a list of rules and regulations?
Do you have to sell all of your stuff? Do you have to live on a farm? Go off the grid? Do you have to homeschool? Do you need a tiny house?
NO! There are absolutely no rules and you certainly don't have to follow another person's lifestyle. The external results of a simple life focused on Jesus may have less things, but the true focus of living simply is to get rid of anything that hinders us from our walk with God. For me, my mission in living a simple life is because I want more Jesus and less of this world. I believe God will use people in different ways for different purposes, but all for His glory. God will lead you in how you should live, if you seek Him wholeheartedly. He may place you smack in the middle of the city or across the world, but if your focus is on Him, you will naturally seek more of Him and less of the pleasures of this world. I truly believe the more you desire Him, the less you will want of this world.
There are plenty of websites out there for minimalism, organization, and living clutter free. But I want to take it one step further here at Simply Living for Him.
We are all a work in progress, so let's link arms and encourage each other in our journeys. Rather than worrying about a list of rules, let's set one rule:
Seek Jesus with all your heart. The rest will fall into place.

I'm going a bit against the grain today (no pun intended!) today as I talk about why we don't get too wrapped up in meal planning around here, and how I feed my family simply. I choose to focus time and energy on who is around the table rather than what is on the table. Our culture has made food a bit of an obsession these days, but really, do we live to eat or eat to live? Believe me, I love food as much as the next person, but sometimes I think we can place a bit too much emphasis on the next best recipe or meal plan. I am also talking about why I have been eating gluten-free for almost three years even though I am the least likely person to ever make that change! And I am not encouraging you to do it! How We Handle Worry Over the years we have faced several job losses, health issues, and all kinds of other worrisome situations, but we have grown through each one. I fully admit I am a work in progress in this area but am making gains each day.
I come from a long line of worriers and my husband doesn't blink an eye at much. God knew I needed Steve to keep me grounded and my eyes fixed where they should be daily- on Jesus.
Come and join Steve and me as we chat about how we have handled worry as a couple over the years. This is a candid chat and a glimpse into our lives as we share how the Lord has been teaching us (mostly me! ) in this area over the years.
Little did I know, when we had this passage read at our wedding, just how much it would follow us through our marriage:
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." Matthew 6:25-34

I wanted to encourage you all today, that as we look ahead to the next week and things start to get busy, remember why we are celebrating this day. It's not show off our latest Pinterest recipe and cute table decor. It's not to have the perfect crafts for the kids. It's not to keep up with making a "thankful tree" or a "thankful jar." While all of these things are super fun and can be meaningful, at the heart of Thanksgiving is praise to God for who He is.
Let us focus on how we make people feel in our homes, rather than how our homes look. Let us nourish those who join us for dinner with spiritual nourishment and not just Pinterest-perfect recipes. Let us be thankful, not stressed or complaining.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow this week.

Join my husband and me as we talk about how a job loss changed our life- and how it truly was a BLESSING to experience a layoff. This was recorded two years ago, and even more has changed since then. We moved to our little hobby farm, work has continued to come in, and we continue to seek Him in each decision. At the core of this message though is that we found a blessing in what we thought was tragic. God's plans are always higher than our own!
In October 2012, my husband was laid off for the third time in our marriage, and this time we said, "Enough." We knew it was time to submit our family's employment to God. My husband began his own business, and we became a full time "work-at-home- family." It is a privilege to work alongside him each day, as I am able to homeschool and work with my writing and speaking ministries, while he fulfills his passion for graphic design. Many of you know that almost two years ago, we packed up a 26 ft. Uhaul and moved to the country. We didn't grow up this way, and many may wonder how on earth we ended up here? Why did we trade in the sidewalks of suburbia for woods and a stream? Why did we choose to spend evenings chasing chickens instead of life in a neighborhood?
There are many reasons why we chose this life, but mainly because God gave us the desires of our hearts. We are now loving life out here, growing food along with a ministry, raising chicken, ducks, and guineas, and the serenity that comes from our little slice of hobby farm heaven.

But on today's podcast, I am begging you to listen to me in this. It's that important.

Is your clutter weighing you down, but you feel like the emotions tied to it are too strong to let it go?
If you are hanging on to things because of an emotional attachment then it may be time to evaluate. Are you letting your past clutter up your present? Are you trying to hang on to a feeling of the past, while it hinders your present or even your future?
You can have an emotion and a memory without hanging onto every single thing from the past.
We can't get caught up in stealing from our future or even our present because we are holding on to clutter from the past.
We have JOY in the present and we have a future glory to look forward to–we can enjoy our memories without cluttering up our present.
Listen in as I talk about the sometimes delicate topic of emotional attachments to our clutter.

We often say "someday" we will do this or that, but in reality, we only have this moment right in front of us. We don't need to wait to start living the life we have always wanted. We can live it right now. Start living simply. Start living for Him. Choose faith over fear and begin to live more purposefully and with intention today. (excuse the voice on this one- I had a cold and sore throat ;)

Recently I wrote a blog post about getting back to the simple mindset of living:
I want to get back to simple. Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers did just fine without Pinterest boards, meal plans, chore charts, and organizational methods. They did what they knew, handed down to them from generation to generation. I want to get back to simple. I want to focus on relationships more than things. People more than stuff.
Listen in as I talk more about focusing on what really matters...
"There are a million different methods out there telling you how to unclutter your life -But I'm here to point you to God and let Him unclutter your life."

Three years ago we began the journey as a work-at-home family. Today I am sitting down with my husband to share what our daily life looks like as a self-employed family living life together. Between Steve's graphic design company, my writing, and our whole family's endeavors on our (little) hobby farm, we are learning what matters most each day.

I have heard it all when it comes to people asking about homeschooling. Many of these questions I myself once asked before I ever knew God would call me to homeschool. Tonight I am answering a few of the most asked questions!

When my children were very young I bought into the lie that I needed to escape the difficulties of motherhood, rather than embrace them. Perhaps I didn't recognize those little people were my mission at the time. Instead of focusing on just surviving the day, I could have focused on how God would bring me through each moment. My children were watching– did I really want them to remember me just making it, or embracing the life God had given me?
Let's not just survive our days, but thrive because we know that God has given us an amazing blessing to raise future adults. He gives us an opportunity to grow closer to Him each moment of motherhood, by recognizing we can only get by in His strength. Yes, it is hard, but any mission is hard. We should expect it to be grueling at times, but rest assured that God uses our hardships for His good.
We are serving Him through each moment of difficulty, so rather than focusing inward, if we focus on the task at hand and on others, we are sure to find so much more joy.
Motherhood is not something to escape, but to embrace. Too often though our society focuses on motherhood as if it costs us so much when in reality the rewards will be great long after we are gone. We are raising future Christ followers and our attitude should reflect Him.
Join me today as I reflect on my life in my early mothering years. I am opening up what I could have done better, and how I am moving forward embracing motherhood today and striving to do all things with excellence, instead of just enough to get by.

Let's face it- social media can be our friend one day and our biggest enemy the next. However, we can choose to use it for good, or we can choose to let it consume us. Do you know that studies have shown, too much time on the internet can cause feelings of depression and discontentment? I bet the Bible doesn't have those same statistics ;)
Think about this: We wouldn't normally socialize with all kinds of people during school time, so why do think it's OK to be on social media during those hours? Look your kids in the eye and let them know they are more important than what acquaintances are doing on Facebook. Don't have one eye on them and one on your phone.
Join me as I talk about how we can handle social media use in our homeschool and make sure we stay focused on the task at hand.

Yet, after a few months old habits start creeping back in and before we know it, those resolutions are long forgotten.

So you might be surprised to hear what I am really talking about today...how to simplify this year...once and for all!

This summer something amazing happened- I started inviting women to my house to pray. Little did I know, God would orchestrate those times for women to connect in ways I never imagined. When everything was left at the door, but we met on the common ground to sit at Jesus' feet, beautiful things happened.
I learned from those times that we need to have more of those moments where women come together and seek Him together. Women came from all different stages of life and different areas of their walk, yet we all had our eyes on Jesus. It was amazing.
This summer I want to invite you to join me as we gather women from all walks of life to sit at Jesus's feet together. No pretending, no worrying about looking perfect, no masks. Women that have had enough of the emptiness the world offers that want more of what HE offers.
We are holding a women's retreat in Gettysburg, PA. You can read all about here or listen in as I talk about my desire for our time together, as God-honoring women in God-honoring friendships.

Think homeschooling is just mom's job? Really, it takes the whole family. Whether Dad has a supporting role or a very active role, He is the head of the home and his involvement is necessary.
Since many dads work outside of the home during school time though, then just how does he get involved in the teaching?
First, by being the head of the house, his influence is essential in raising our kids. Next, it is quite easy to find ways for dad to teach using his talents, skills, and gifts. And don't think it has to be during school hours! Dads can "teach" lessons that are far more important that those found in textbooks between the hours of 9-3.
Join me with my special guest, my handsome hubby, as we talk about how he gets involved in homeschooling...by teaching life skills, entrepreneurial skills, and just by his example, he is teaching my kids as much (and probably more!) than any of my lessons plans and textbooks!

Living Simply I was always a simple girl at heart. I always looked at things differently as a girl...I wondered why people always seemed to be busy, but not enjoying life. I never wanted my life to be lost in the hustle and bustle. I looked at things in the perspective of, "What does this matter years from now..."
As I grew older and had my own family, I knew I didn't want to be part of the rat race. I wanted a simple life focused on God and family.
Yet, the world we live in is busy. It is complicated. And early in our marriage, we were headed toward the rat race. My husand worked late hours and never was home for dinner. With fcusing on the Lord, though we now enjoy three meals a day together.
Join me as I talk about how we quit the rat race and why we live to keep up with God, and not the Joneses. And while I know that this life isn't for everyone, and some people enjoy the hustle and bustle, it is still important to remember who and what we are being busy for...

I am so thrilled to be able to introduce to you today, Mrs. Leslie Nunnery, founder of Teach Them Diligently. She and her husband, David began Teach Them Diligently back in 2011, and many have been blessed by their endeavors since.
Today I wanted to share with you the heart behind Teach Them Diligently, so you can get to know more about who they are and the great work God is doing through them.
You will be blessed to hear more about this FAMILY event!
Teach Them Diligently is distinctive from many other homeschool conventions because the foundation will be discipleship, parenting, and missions. Academics and how-to workshops on homeschooling will be important, as will legal discussions regarding homeschooling. But, discipleship will be the foundation, and we believe that it is the foundation for what so many Christian parents do every day as they educate their children. Another distinction is that all profits from the Teach Them Diligently Convention will go directly into mission endeavors.

This is the season where we are celebrating Jesus- and that should bring us such JOY. Yet the very things we are celebrating get lost in the worlds' message of busyness and materialism, and we find ourselves complaining, stressed, and overwhelmed. That is NOT what God wants us to feel at Christmas. We should be rejoicing all season long- our Savior is coming!
The message of Christmas is by no means simple, it is extraordinary- that God came down as a baby, to live and ultimately die for our sins. Yet, we become so distracted by the busyness, materialism, and consumerism at this time that we lose focus. Let's simplify this season by focusing on having less "stuff," and doing more real things. Let's connect with others, connect with God...and ultimately share the greatest gift of all. Share Jesus.

Almost ten years ago, God called me to the journey of homeschooling, and I went kicking and screaming! I ran from God at first, but I knew deep down that God was calling me to this journey, so I answered the call. I never thought I would homeschool, nor did I feel equipped. With family opposition, my own pride and insecurities, the odds were stacked against me...but GOD prevailed! I sought out on this journey for "just one year." Now, I haven't looked back, and couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Are you constantly feeling disorganized? Are you always looking for a new planner or system to help keep your home running more efficiently? Are you wanting that perfect looking home where everything matches and is Pinterest perfect?
For years, I was always trying to control disorder in my home, by thinking I needed to have the next best method of organization...whether it was a new planner, homeschool curriculum, chore system, meal plan, or discipline method...I was always searching for the answer to disorder. And while those things are certainly good in and of themselves, when I looked deeper I realized they were not only making my life MORE complicated, I was also searching for order and peace in all the wrong places. So I stopped chasing the Instagram ideal home, and found my true satisfaction comes from the simple things.
Join me for this discussion on going back to the basics. Let's not get distracted with how things look on the outside, but let's focus on the inside.
This is by no means a condemnation of organization or certain methods...it is merely a look at how we may be more efficient if we keep it simple and our eyes on our true goals. :)

What is Real Homeschool? Podcast Episode #9 This book is not really about social media per se, but more about our hearts in a world that continues to push us to be more like it. Everywhere we turn, social media is screaming at us and showing us pictures of what we should be. Slowly, gradually, we start following the world and trying to bring God with us, rather than letting God lead us and then bringing the world with us!
They are the desires that creep in and take my focus off of my true purpose in homeschooling. You know what I mean— when the focus becomes all about finding the best curriculum or filling up the schedule with the most extracurricular activities? Or how about decorating the perfect homeschool room? Or the hours spent online searching what others are doing, while neglecting your own time with the Lord? These are all things that have become an issue with me, and I am sure with others, especially as social media grows.
I have often thought about those early homeschoolers who had no Internet or fancy curriculum but truly sought the Lord in their decision to homeschool. I admire them so much! They weren’t busy showing off their schoolrooms or their kids on Instagram; they were deep in the nitty-gritty of daily homeschool life when homeschooling wasn’t even mainstream. They weren’t spending hours on Pinterest, but probably hours in the Word.
This book will challenge us to get back to the basics and fully rely on God. We need to stop living up to an Internet ideal and live only for God’s ideals. This book isn’t at all a book against social media (after all, I work in social media), but more about our hearts and what we do with social media. Pinterest and Instagram and all the other media out there are certainly not bad in and of themselves, but we do need to be aware of our hearts when using them. We must not let those things rule our standards. Only God should rule us.
Will you join me as we get back to the basics? Will you join me as we endeavor to be real with each other because we need each other? Will you join me as we focus on what God wants for our homeschools and not what the world says is success? Will you join me as we pursue Real Homeschool? Not a picture-perfect homeschool, but a real homeschool –where the rubber meets the road and it sometimes gets messy –and we work together through those messes…
And then it gets beautiful…oh, so beautiful…because God is right there with us. He is working through our families on this real homeschooling journey.
God has called us to this beautiful journey…and the perfect picture is the one where He is leading every step, guiding us, and our eyes are fixed solely on Him.

I recently wrote about living a clutter-free life and that post really hit home with so many people. Tonight, I sat down to discuss this issue, and really get to the heart.
For years now I have been simplifying and living a more clutter-free life, and last year it all really came to a head when we moved to a new home. We took only what was necessary, and I have found so much freedom in having less stuff. It was a fresh start.
The irony of our society is that we have so much stuff, and continue to seek more, yet we are finding people more and more stressed, busy, and dissatisfied. Why is that?
Our joy comes from so much more than stuff and externals do not define us. Jesus does. Even if you aren’t moving to a new home, you can still choose to start fresh and lessen the amount of clutter in your life.
Face it, more stuff means more stuff to manage and it often brings more stress.
Do you want more peace? More joy? Freedom to live life without being weighed down by stuff?
Join me as we discuss finding freedom from clutter!

So you want to simplify your life, but don’t even know where to start? Usually, the hardest part is taking the first step.
Have you read all about simplifying, reducing clutter, and purging the house—-and then you look around and are so overwhelmed, you throw in the towel before you start. Or do you get super motivated to start your plan and go full force, only to find in a few days you start to unravel it all?
Simplifying is about so much more than clutter- it is a heart issue that starts inside and works its way out. Simplifying is such a buzz word these days, and for me it is about SO much more than just getting rid of “stuff.” It is about understating the heart behind why we have so much clutter, and why we think we need so much. It is about focusing on the fact that God is all we need, and nothing else can fill that void.
Yet, as a society we have bought into the lie, that more stuff equals more happiness. And the more we toil and attain, the more unhappy we become. Our houses are full, and our hearts are empty.
We also have more information than ever and are completely overwhelmed as to what to do with it all.
So in order to even begin simplifying, we need to start by knowing our Creator, and our purpose- which is to know Him and make Him known. The closer we are to Him, the less we will desire to fill up on stuff.
Join me as we talk about how to start simplifying this moment!
