Deuteronomy 6:12-15
The Purpose of Sabbath is a Sign of the Covenant
Exodus 31:13-16

§ Nehemiah 13:15-18
§ If you Disregard Rest you’re Heading for Destruction

Back to the Future Part 3
The Law: A Tutor or Lifeguard?
Exodus 20 & Galatians 3
· The Law is a Tutor, not a Lifeguard (Exodus 20:1-17) o Demonstrate God’s holiness and righteousness § How holy is God to me? o Separate God’s people as holy from all others § How holy am I…privately and publicly? o Reveals our need for a Savior (Deuteronomy 27:26; Galatians 3:10, 19, 22-26) § Do I think I need a Savior? · Jesus is the Lifeguard, not a Tutor (Galatians 3) o Jesus fulfilled the letter and spirit of the Law (Matthew 5:17-18, 21-22, 27-28) § Jesus saved us by His work, not His teaching (Galatians 3:13-14) o Followers of Jesus are under the Law of Christ (1 Corinthians 9:21; Galatians 6:2) § Law of Christ = Loving God more than anyone or anything else AND loving people like I love myself (Matthew 22:37-40; Luke 14:26)
· This Week’s ACTIVATE FAITH o Reflection: Which covenant am I living under…Law or Grace?
§ How do I treat myself?
§ How do I treat others?
§ How do I treat God?
Make a plan with action steps of how to show my love for God and other people
BACK TO THE FUTURE 2
"Passover: God Saves"
· The Problem
o We are enslaved by our sin and brokenness. (Exodus 3:6-10)
o We incorrectly understand suffering and adversity. (Exodus 5:19-23)
§ Following Jesus is more about adversity than prosperity. (Luke 9:23-24; 14:28-33)
· The Solution
o God fought to free us by dying for us in the person of Jesus Christ. (Exodus 7-11:4-10; 12:5-7, 12-13; John 1:29; 1 Peter 2:24)
§ Jesus was crucified on Passover
o Our freedom comes from the inside-out (Galatians 5:22-23)
· The Celebration
o Worship involves the celebration of God’s work. (Exodus 12:1-3; 14:15-18, 21-28)
o Celebration remembers and rekindles faith in Jesus. (2 Timothy 1:7) ·
This Week’s ACTIVATE Faith (Next Steps)
o Go slow confessing daily my individual sins safeguarded by Romans 8:1
o Talk with someone about Jesus/my testimony
o Listen, in solitude, to some worship songs that we sing on Sundays
Back to the Future part 1
Covenants: God’s Guarantee
· Covenant: Binding agreement between two parties where each party is bound to the other and breaking the covenant results in consequences. o Biblical covenants are more than contracts because of the commitment and loyalty to the relationship between God and His people.
· Let’s go BACK: o Abrahamic Covenant = God promise to multiply and bless His people with land and make them a great nation for the purpose blessing all other nations. (Genesis 12:1-3; 15:8-12, 17-18; 22:15-18) § Sign = circumcision § Still in effect o Mosaic Covenant = God’s presentation of His commands and promise to bless His people for their obedience and curse them for disobedience. (Exodus 19:5-8; 24:3-8; Deuteronomy 28) § Sign = Ten Commandments (The Law) § Obsolete (fulfilled by Jesus) o New (Jesus) Covenant = God replaces the old (Mosaic) covenant with the promise of forgiveness and salvation by His grace through the work of Jesus Christ. (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:8-13; Luke 22:19-21) § Sign = Baptism and Communion § Still in effect
· Let’s go to the FUTURE: o Abrahamic Covenant § Being Abraham’s descendent (i.e., heir to the promise) comes from a spiritual birth; not physical. (Galatians 3:6-9, 14, 28-29) § We have a purpose to live out! What am I doing bless other people? o Mosaic Covenant § Am I still living under the Law? § Have I seen my need for forgiveness and Jesus as my Savior? o New (Jesus) Covenant § Christ-followers can “share in the divine nature…escaping…evil desires”. (2 Peter 1:3-4) § Is my life any different following Jesus?
· This Week ACTIVATE Faith o Commit to Bible engagement for 15 minutes/day for 5 days/week o Go through the questions above

High Pointe Church The Question and Context; Luke 10:38-42 If Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet is countercultural, then why was Martha the one who was distracted? Martha, Martha (v40) shows a care and empathy that Jesus has for Martha Jesus did care about the work that Martha was doing, but His response also shows His priorities. The one thing (v 42) ares the words of life that Jesus speaks. The Application; Colossians 3:17 Sitting at the feet of Jesus is one of the first parts of discipleship. We don’t stay at Jesus’ feet. We come to the feet of Jesus so that we can BE the hands and feet of Jesus. The Answer; Isaiah 55:8-9 It is good that God’s ways are not my ways, because my ways are selfish. if God did things my way, then there would be no hope for you and me. God’s way brings hope and salvation to a lost and hurting world. God’s version of different (Isaiah 55:6-7; Ezekiel 33:11), was done through a cross. Action Steps 1. Examine priorities 2. Accept the invitation to sit at Jesus’ feet. 3. Consider His way vs. your way. Are you trying to force God to accept your ways, or are you ready to trust Him in His way?

Title: "A Question About Reconciliation"
Matthew 18:21-35
“The Community Prescription” Are your relationships replaceable?

Mercy is NOT getting what you DO deserve. Grace IS getting what you DO NOT deserve. Forgiveness Frees You from the prison of offense.
DL Moody: "I believe this is keeping more people from having power with God than any other thing, they are not willing to cultivate the spirit of forgiveness. If we allow the root of bitterness to spring up in our hearts against someone, our prayer will not be answered

TheologE of Sin Part III The Effect and Extant of Sin
Part I. The Choices Deuteronomy 30:16-20 Choose Life= choosing to do life God’s way Choose Death= sin; doing it my way
Part II. The Choice of Death Genesis 3:17-19 The first sin brought a curse upon a perfect world What was meant to be lush, beautiful, productive and perfect was now corrupted with sin. Romans 8:20-22 Romans 1:20-23 The layers of sin that we have added on are like ripples in water that slowly but surely create a tidal wave of death and destruction. The extant of sin is both on the individual and the whole. Judge 2:10-13 They traded the truth of God for a lie They didn’t stop worshiping God, they just widened the target. 2 Chronicles 36:15-21 They lost everything! The effect of sin is a slow, gradual process that lulls you into a false sense of security.
Part III. The Better Choice Even in a world that is decaying under the effects of sin, we can still choose life. 1 Kings 19:18 The remnant were regular people who refused to bow the knee to sin Romans 5:3-5 When the world is at its worst, we can see God at His best.

"TheologE of Sin Explanation of Sin" -
Technically sin is breaking God’s commands (1 John 3:4) o God’s commands are important boundaries that allow us to thrive (Deuteronomy 10:12-13) o God’s commands for us today: New Testament + moral law in the Old Testament carried over (Matthew 5:17)
o “Sins” are the symptoms of our sin nature/disease (Romans 7:15-20)
· Relationally sin is betraying God’s love to be our own god (Gen. 2:16-17; 3:4-6) o Sin is an internal matter of the heart (Matthew 5:27-28)
o Sin is a violation of love as well as a violation of God’s commands (John 14:15)
· The Deception of Sin: We can sin going good and not doing bad
· This Week’s Activate Faith
o Come back next week o Reflect on why I do good and don’t do bad
o Worship Jesus
o Confess to God my betrayal of Him and receive Jesus’ work for me to be forgiven
"Living Beyond the Veil" Melinda Reed - guest speaker Sermon Notes: Luke 23:44-47 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three because the sun’s light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle. And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” Saying this, He breathed His last.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. The rending of the veil granted royal access, inviting a life of freedom, fellowship, and a future of hope. The torn veil grants us freedom from yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Hebrews 10:10 By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time. Hebrews 10:19-20 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus— he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh) Why do we sometimes choose life outside the veil? Comfort Idols Shame Lack of gratitude and wonder Romans 8:1 There is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus Christ. Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ set us free. Reflection: Are you living in freedom or closing the curtain in bondage? Entrance to the Holiest Place brings unprecedented fellowship with God. John 15:4a Remain in me and I in you. We must live beyond the veil: Dive into God’s Word Pray at all times Experience God in all we do Always be grateful Reflection: Do you live each day in the Most Holy Place? What one step can you take toward occupying that space? We live beyond the veil with a future full of hope. Hebrews 6:19-20 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. Romans 12:12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. Reflection: Is your future anchored in the hope that is yours’ to receive? For this week: Invite you to take a veil remnant and continue to reflect on these questions: Am I living in freedom or closing the curtain in bondage? Do I live each day in the Most Holy Place? What one step can I take toward occupying that space? Is my future anchored in the hope that is mine to receive?

Jesus on Money: "A Healthy Relationship with Money"
Matthew 13:44-46
· It’s easy to relate to money in an unhealthy way:
o Security o Status o Self-worth o Comfort
· Jesus sets a boundary on money: It is not and cannot be more valuable than the kingdom of heaven.
o A healthy relationship with money is born from treasuring the kingdom of heaven most
· The kingdom of heaven: o Is currently not a realm or place but a reign and rule of Jesus in His followers’ lives (Luke 17:20-21; John 18:36)
o Is most valuable and offers: § Salvation § Living hope § Spirit-empowered life § Purpose in life and suffering § Unconditional love
o Is open to all who humbly turn from living for themselves to live for Jesus (Matthew 4:17; 5:3)
· Keeping a healthy relationship with money requires me to invest in the kingdom of heaven (i.e., give it away to God’s work).
· This Week’s Activate Faith
o Look at how I spend money and why I spend money and evaluate what I treasure most.
o Prayerfully prepare for the spiritual growth opportunity of participating in our upcoming building campaign

What is your attitude to pastoral Authority?
Main Idea: Healthy Churches have a discipline of Submission to Pastoral Authority
When you pray for something, do you recognize the answer? Do you know when God wants you to wait or when his answer is ‘Yes’? If an Angel appeared to you and gave you God's answer, would you believe or would you doubt? When Gabriel told Zechariah that he would become a father, he doubted this seemingly impossible promise; but Elizabeth rejoiced in the face of the same impossible promise. how will you respond when God says “yes” to an impossible ask?
This is a very visually heavy sermon, if you get a chance to watch it, you can see what we are doing in El Salvador.
Harvest Sunday is a day where we ask you to give beyond your normal giving. During Brad's sermon, he calls upon Paul Newhouse, Sixto Rivera, and John Allen to speak about their work and experience in EL Salvador. The new facility, Centro Emanuel is shown and we get to see it in use already for a youth event. The Christian Education program is also featured and we hear from a sponsor about a personal connection with the student he sponsors.
Brad begins with an update on our remodeling project. Then he jumps into chapter 15 he speaks on the importance of the resurrection to the Christian story. without the resurrection, what is the point? for tomorrow we die. but because we know that Jesus did in fact resurrect, we know that we too can have eternal life in Christ.
Brad brings up 2 guests, Ryan Newhouse and John Herzog to discuss the role of women in the church.
Chapter 12 of First Corinthians tells us that we are all part of the body of Christ, we all have gifts to use for the betterment of His kingdom.
John Herzog brings us the lesson in the second half of chapter 11, Communion. As part of the sermon, we also share communion at the end.
In chapter 8 Paul focuses on meat that was sacrificed to idols. Even tho this is not a consideration when we buy meat, the lesson does not end there. We are called to be mindful to not make our brothers and sisters stumble by the actions that we take.
In chapters 6 and 7 of 1 Corinthians, Paul speaks about sexual morality and when sex is appropriate and as God intended.
Brad teaches from 1 Corinthians chapter 5. Paul speaks about sexual immorality. Paul then goes on to judge this Christian to try to have this person amend his ways.
Paul describes two classes of people. The first is the unsaved person; the natural man; a person unable to receive the things of God. The second is the saved person; the supernatural man; a person filled with the Holy Spirit that allows them to understand the things of God.
Week 2 of our series in Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth. We see that there are divisions in the church based on which teacher the Christians claim to follow and Paul sets them on the path where the only teacher that matters is Christ.
We started our series of First Corinthians with a look at the history of Corinth at the time. History tells us that to compare it to Las Vegas would be too tame of a comparison. Brad walks us thru some other letters from Paul as well as other accounts of Paul for some background on the need for this letter to the church at Corinth.
Brad brings us a lesson out of Mark about the ministry of Jesus. We read about his interaction with Legion and his miracle of sending the legion of demons into the pigs and how the pigs then ran into the water.
Brad invited his neighbors to speak on the importance that their small group as had in their relationship with each other. Brad also speaks on the relational, communal, actionable parts of small groups.
