IRC WASH
IRC is an international think-and-do tank that works with governments, NGOs, entrepreneurs and people around the world to find long-term solutions to the global crisis in water, sanitation and hygiene services. At the heart of its mission is the aim to move from short-term interventions to sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services.
With over 45 years of experience, IRC runs projects in more than 25 countries and large-scale programmes in seven focus countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It is supported by a team of over 80 staff across the world.

Practical action to strengthen WASH in healthcare facilities featuring Afou Bengaly by IRC WASH
WASH in healthcare facilities has largely been treated as an infrastructure challenge, rather than a health systems issue. Without underlying systems in place, infrastructure deteriorates. And no one knows quite sure whose job it is. WASH in health care facilities is not embedded in health systems. Health sector decision makers, practitioners and WASH actors can use using the WHO health system building blocks to address this multi sector systems issue. According to the World Bank, global WASH public resources needed to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6.1 and 6.2 on drinking water and sanitation (SDG 6) are behind by about US$ 116 billion per year. This presents massive hurdle to achieving the goals by the 2030 deadline.

Faecal sludge is not waste, says Ton de Wilde, it is a resource that can produce fertiliser, biogas and electricity. By adding other sources such as animal and agricultural waste plus enzymes you can actually produce energy much more efficiently than with either wind turbines or solar cells. Based on innovative research that his team carried out Bangladesh, Ton sees great potential in converting faecal sludge into commercially viable end-products while at the same improving health and reducing greenhouse gasses.
