Jesus received his identity from his father and lived from that identity. He invites us to do the same. When you know who you are and whose you are, you know how to live - how to really live.

Everyone loves a good origin story. Matthew takes us back in the story of Jesus, not just for background context, but because the more we understand Jesus, the more we understand ourselves

Jesus. How do you capture the magnitude of this name? The simplicity? The beauty? The weight? The grace? The wisdom? The power? The love? The sacrifice? John, one of Jesus’ closest friends and disciples tried to sum it up at the end of his account this way: “Jesus did many other things…and if every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” Wow what an ending! On the other hand, Matthew, one of Jesus’ other disciples decides to intro his account with this zinger: “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah…” Hang on tight. This is going to be good.

Community: an idea familiar to the culture we live in, but experientially it often seems a far cry from what Jesus had in mind. What makes community in the way of Jesus different, more formational, and more impactful than the versions the world has to offer?

Humility is a part of someone’s character that is typically admired (at least from the perspective of an obituary), but how do you grow in it? How do you become a humble person? Richard Foster says, “More than any other single way, the grace of humility is worked into our lives through the discipline of service.”

Jesus said, “come to me…and I will give you rest”, but most of us don’t have time for that do we? Even if we did, what does it mean to truly rest? We’ve definitely mastered entertainment, but we probably wouldn’t relate our latest Netflix binge to Jesus’ invitation here, would we? (Wait does “The Chosen” count??) Dallas Willard once said, “hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day.” What would it look like to lean in and learn together from our “never-in-a-hurry” rabbi?

Fasting is perhaps one of the most disconnected practices from our modern day experience of following Jesus. It is difficult to understand, post-enlightenment, how anything spiritual can be connected to our stomachs. What role can “not eating” possibly play in empowering me to follow Jesus

Many Jesus followers have a sincere desire to obey Jesus in the area of making disciples, but for a variety of reasons, they struggle to see their lives produce this kind of fruit. What if you could become the kind of person that partners with God in such a way, that you look up before the end of this year and you’re baptizing someone with your own hands that you’ve introduced to Jesus? What if that’s only the beginning? What if that was God’s plan for you all along?

We start our journey of taking up the easy yoke of Jesus through the central practice of prayer. Richard Foster says “Of all spiritual disciplines, prayer is the most central because it ushers us into perpetual communion with the Father.” In other words, prayer is how we learn to “be with Jesus.” But it doesn’t stop there.

Howard Dayton says “Giving is not God’s way of raising money, it’s God’s way of raising people into the likeness of His Son.” As followers of Jesus, our desire is to become like Him in every aspect of our lives. As a result, the practice of generosity is central to our spiritual formation.

When we look at our lives with the end in mind, most, if not all of us, want to minimize regret and enjoy life to the full. We all want to make the most of our time—we all want our lives to matter. But how do know that we’re giving ourselves to the right things? As followers of Jesus, we acknowledge that God has given us this one life to live, and in and of itself, it’s a sheer, amazing gift. But there’s more… we’re also gifted - why?

We are the most time-aware generation in human history. We have found ways to make every second of life as efficient as possible. We are simultaneously the most time-poor generation in human history. As we practice the way of Jesus together in Boulder, we must think deeply and live wholly into the role community plays in our spiritual formation. In addition, we have ideas of formation and ideals of community we must be honest about in order to participate more fully into all that God has for us. What might surprise us is that through the more or less ordinary and non-glamorous aspects of community can come some of our most significant long-term formation.

The stats are in and they are staggering: 10 out of 10 people will eventually die. We have a funny relationship with our mortality. We live as if it’s not a reality for as long as we can and then when it’s staring us in the face and we have to stare back, we often don’t cope well. But what if as Jesus followers there’s a better way? Jesus himself modeled and invites us into that better way; a way with permission to grieve well and maintain hope while simultaneously living fully engaged and alive in the life God has called us to.

When you hear the word influencer, it probably brings to mind a specific idea or person. The way our current culture talks about influence can make the way we think about our own influence challenging. But what if you’re made to be an influencer? When God speaks he creates; he brings life. When God filled humanity with his breath, he told them to partner with him and go on doing the same thing: create. But when tempted to trust in themselves rather than God and rely on their own breath rather than God’s, Adam and Eve reached for what seemed like freedom, only to find it to be slavery. That reality continues to hum along in the human condition, but God is relentless in bringing life back and his breath back to the ones who walked away - to breathe life in us and through us.

Jesus said that it was actually better for us as followers that He would go away because in leaving, He was sending the Holy Spirit (John 16). Really? That’s better? Because if we’re being honest, given the chance to exchange our current experience up to this point of following Jesus with a face to face moment with Him—which one would most people likely lean toward? There seems to be a gap between many of Jesus’ promises and many people’s actual experience as they follow Him. Is this it? Or is there more?

We’re wrapping up our series with the reminder that to go forward, sometimes we have to go back. The reality is that there are some patterns of thinking and behavior that we’ve carried on from our past that are unhealthy and out of line with the way of Jesus, and we need to break them in order to move forward. But there are also things from our past we need to identify and celebrate. What does it look like to pass those things on as we follow Jesus?

Everyone loves a good story. It could also be argued that everyone is living into and from a story—the kicker is if we can attach that little word “good” to ours…but that’s the hope right? Bobette Buster argues that we are “narrative animals’, that we are hard-wired to look and live from meaning. The problem is that sometimes we attach our stories to false narratives that deeply impact how we relate to God, ourselves, and others. The bigger problem is that we’re often unaware of that reality. But as we follow Jesus, we connect our story to a bigger story: His story, and learn to live more fully into what is good, true and beautiful.

The desire to change some of our default ways of relating is a pretty common and shared experience, however many of us have tried to change through conscious effort and will power again and again, only to end up with similar results. So what’s the way forward? Through self-clarity, knowing our story and where we come from and sharing our story with others, all in relationship with God, the One who is completely trustworthy, we can experience transformation.

As we organize our lives around following Jesus, part of the intentional work around “who we are becoming” is directly linked to our ability to understand where we come from. The desire to change… it’s in all of us to varying degrees. But actually changing… that’s a whole other matter entirely. Dallas Willard says “If we are to be transformed, the body must be transformed, and that is not accomplished by talking at it.” But how often has that been the strategy? The consistent conclusion both from the life of Jesus as well as two millennia of church history is that among the spiritual disciplines, there is one in particular that could be labeled “the most important” of all the disciplines in helping us on our journey of apprenticing under Jesus.

“New Year, New Me.” It’s a bit cliche; maybe a bit outdated; and it’s almost biblical. We are all becoming someone; whether who we are becoming is intentional or not cannot be left to wishful thinking or assumption. Our character arc over the course of a year is probably anything but “up and to the right” when left unattended. There’s definitely a “new me” as we step into 2024, but what if it’s not the “me” you wanted to be? Jesus cares deeply about who we are becoming, but He is not forcing formation, He’s inviting us into the process WITH Him.

Maybe you’re in a place where a longing is developing inside of you this advent season. Maybe there’s something inside you that would say, “I want to see, and hear, and know God more deeply.” Maybe not. Maybe you WISH that was the longing inside you, but if you were to be honest… it’s just not. Whichever side of the longing equation you fall on, there’s a question we can ask, maybe that we must ask in response: “WHAT SHOULD WE DO?”

Advent literally means “arrival” - the season of advent is one where we create space to reflect on the arrival of Jesus and one where we allow that reflection to uniquely shape us as Jesus followers. On that first Christmas night, the most important thing to ever happen in human history was happening. Simultaneously, the world kept turning and most people totally missed it. Advent is an opportunity for us to slow down, notice, and receive the gift of “God with us;” but if we don’t slow down, we might miss the most important thing to ever happen in human history… and the most important thing to ever happen in us.

What does it mean to believe that the Bible is a divine word to God’s people? Does it require a belief that the book fell from heaven or that its origins are less than human? In this teaching we take time to explore why we can trust the Bible by looking at where it comes from, the story it tells, and the story we’re invited into.

What is the Bible? If we misunderstand what the Bible is, we could turn it into something it’s not. The misuse of the Bible has unfortunately been a source of pain for many people in many different ways. You might be one of them, or you might know someone. In this teaching, our desire is to clarify our working definition of the Bible in order to more fully equip us in our approach to the scriptures as we practice the way of Jesus together in Boulder.

As we seek to apprentice under Jesus, few would argue that there’s a central role that the Bible plays in that journey. However, while acknowledging that there’s a place for the Bible as we follow Jesus, many people struggle with what that place looks like simultaneously. What role does it play? Can we trust the Bible? What about the hard and confusing stuff? What about the stuff out of alignment with the cultural values in the world around us? What about the stuff we simply don’t like? We’re kicking off this series hoping to answer many of these questions and more. But first, we’re starting with “why” the Bible in the first place?

This week we take a look at possibly the hardest and simultaneously most audacious line of the entire “Our Father”. The invitation to pray for the reality and resources of heaven to come to earth is amazing; maybe even at times, overwhelming? But then right up against the magnitude of that permission, Jesus teaches us to pray for our daily bread. Going from the magnitude of prayers around “Heaven to Earth” to the mundane of “this afternoon's lunch” might feel a little strange… maybe even out of place? But that’s what Jesus is after. For you and I to know the God who cares just as much about heaven to earth prayers as He does daily bread prayers.

In our current cultural moment, specifically within the United States, finding and feeling a sense of “us” can feel a lot like you’re in search of a unicorn. Jesus invites us to trust Him and to embrace His new Kingdom, but what does that look like? Surely this invitation involves more than simply embracing a set of theological beliefs (a kingdom of the mind) or a hope in life after death right? While not absent of those realities, where does following Jesus intersect with “real life?” in Philippians 1:27-29, Paul gives us a picture of how our identity as “Citizens of Heaven” is intended to inform not only how we think but how we live.

When Jesus invites us to pray for God’s rule and reign to be on earth as it is in heaven, He’s inviting us to partner with God in bringing His way into every broken, disordered, and pain-filled part of the world we see around us. Richard Foster said, “if we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than is within our power to give them, and this will lead us to prayer.” If there’s so much potential and power wrapped up in prayer, then why, for most people, does it feel less like sharing in God’s rule to bring heaven to earth and more like eating celery?

If we want to become like Jesus; if we want to become deeply transformed into the image of Jesus and as a result our true selves, we must adopt the way of Jesus. All of us are being formed; all of us are disciples of something or someone; so the question remains - who are you becoming? The process of “unintentional” spiritual formation is not something you have to work hard after - in fact, all you have to do is wake up tomorrow and the stories we believe, the habits we live into, and the relationships we’re connected to will do the forming for us. For Jesus, there was no secular/sacred divide. The western approach to a spiritual life has left many of us compartmentalizing our lives into spiritual and… well, just “normal” life, right? Jesus didn’t have a “spiritual life,” he would have just called it “LIFE”… and Jesus saw every square inch of life as important to God. For Jesus, there is a devil and his demons. For post-enlightenment westerners, there seem to be a couple of alternate and unhealthy ideologies: on one side we might see paranoia and superstition played out to ridiculous extremes (like your car battery died and it must be a demon) and on the other we see a complete dismissal or volitional ignorance toward any kind of spiritual evil at work in the world. While we have nothing to fear, as Jesus followers we are called to be alert and aware of this enemy’s schemes. We ask the question often at City Church: “Who are you becoming?” It’s an important question. It’s important because it so easily moves outside the space of awareness and priority. We are all becoming. We are all being formed. The question is, into what? And by whom? While massively important, maybe we should take a step and ask a deeper question; a question that presses on the motive. “Who should we be becoming?” If we get that question wrong, we might just miss it all.

Most followers of Jesus believe God can heal. But that’s about where it stops. We start to divide over what we really believe after that. With the desire of the human heart never satisfied, and the compelling calls of the American dream toward accumulation, success, and excess, is it any wonder why we live scattered, restless, and discontented lives? Jesus was familiar with the condition of human heart far before modern marketing set it’s target on our desire for more. Is there a practice from the way of Jesus to help us find contentment, margin, and life that is truly life? Lean in for Week 2 of “Generosity.”

The invitation to be with Jesus is incredible (and maybe simultaneously a bit challenging), but still like really, really incredible. The invitation to become LIKE Jesus though, is hard; like really, really, hard. And maybe a little discouraging… because we’ve all tried to change, right? Yet in that effort, sometimes (maybe more times than we’d like to admit), we come up with nothing to show for it. Maybe our biggest problem is not so much a lack of desire to change, but that we don’t know how to change. Is change possible? Yes. Let’s find out how.

If you’re considering, wrestling with, or have embraced the Christian faith, there’s something super important that happened (and is actually still happening) that you need to know about. The ability to believe is powerful. Human belief has changed the world over and over again. But when conversations around belief shift into the religious sphere, things can start to get confusing. What is the role of belief (or faith) in terms of religion and what, if anything, makes Christianity any different from other forms of belief? Is it possible religion in general and Christianity specifically is just for the naive and weak-minded who just need something to hope and believe in? Or could it be better than that?

Most of us struggle with or have struggled with this tension: "If there is a God, where do I stand with Him? How do I know? Can I ever know?" Everything has a starting point. Even faith has a starting point. But for many, there is an increasing gap between their faith and their experiences.
