Working in the field of sexual abuse prevention, I get a lot of questions. What is sexual abuse? Can an abuser be a minor? Does abuse have to be recurring or does a one-time-act fall under the umbrella? Do children make up allegations? Do perpetrators go to prison often? Once you talk about it aren't you over it? Honestly, I love these questions. I have the opportunity to educate and hopefully ignite some empathy for victims and survivors. When I got into prevention work back in 2014, I began to LOVE social media. People around the world were using the internet to speak out against injustices. Like a lot of millennials, I grew up watching everything Pixar. Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles were watched countless times. My siblings and myself would huddle together in our living room and escape through the cartoons. We watched them so often we could say the lines in sync with the characters. We knew when to yell “that’s you!” at each other when an ugly or particularly evil character came on screen. We bonded through our trauma, sure. Growing up in the home that I did, there wasn’t much room for feelings. I mean, I had feelings for sure. To acknowledge the pain from abuse would have warped my reality, though. To keep myself safe as a kid, I compartmentalized the anger, resentment, and pain. That avoidance came at a price. My happiness was pushed down too. My mind and body said, “It’s all the feelings or none of them, Deanna!” Ultimately, it wasn’t until I was 21 years old where I began to manage the good, the bad, and the ugly of life.

Eventually I picked a corner. With my right shoulder pressed hard against a wall, I sat and silently ate the food I couldn’t taste. Humiliation came over me in waves. I couldn’t stand eating alone. Sometimes it’s not exactly easy to be ourselves. We fear judgement. If we are authentically ourselves and people don’t like it, it can feel like we did something wrong. It never feels good to lose friends or family or a romantic interest. Being rejected is painful. So what to we do? Well, we hide ourselves. We tone down our excitement and our inner glow. We push ourselves to fit into a mold of what makes others comfortable rather than breaking the mold and letting our individuality shine through. I don’t think we should have to ever dim our sparkle. Every person in a romantic relationship fulfills certain roles. One partner may stay at home while another “brings home the bacon”. One may do the cooking and another may mow the lawn. Or maybe they switch roles on and off; Sometimes it depends on which partner has the time between working 40-hours, raising children, and maintaining their own sanity. When we don’t understand the power imbalance of an abusive relationship, it’s easy to judge a victim of domestic violence. Why victims stay is not simple to explain nor is every abusive relationship the same. However, we can look at common abuser tactics and why so many victims feel trapped and unable to leave. First of all, abusers do not start off as abusive. Abusers can be incredibly charismatic, kind, and even gentle in the honeymoon phase. Often times people will question why an adult who was sexually abused in their childhood waited years to disclose. I cannot speak for all victims or survivors, but I can say with a certainty many of us felt shame, embarrassment, and guilt; we were led to believe it was our fault or we could get in trouble. Many of us loved our abusers because that same abuser was someone we once trusted and we didn’t want them to get into trouble. Every year our children review and relearn information from the previous year. Bus evacuations, fire drills, tornado and inclement weather drills, code red and lockdowns, and even stranger danger. All of this is taught and learned and relearned with one goal in mind: to keep children safe. On January 24th, 2013 Governor Quinn of Illinois signed Senate Bill 856 into law. More commonly known as Erin’s Law, this legislation mandates all public schools to provide comprehensive prevention education on sexual abuse. Statistically speaking, 1/4 girls and 1/6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. Preventing sexual abuse can feel like an overwhelming and never-ending battle. Talk about personal body safety as early and as often as possible. Use anatomically correct words as parents. Keep an open dialogue about relationships, feelings, and seemingly everyday and mundane life experiences. Listen, listen, listen. That is the question, no? The age old debate for survivors: Do I truly need to forgive to heal? Am I unable to “move on” without forgiving? If I do forgive, is that weakness?
The answer to all of those questions is, no. Forgiveness is not mandatory for healing. You can still live your life without forgiveness. And you are never weak for finding it within yourself to forgive someone; Someone who has not likely acknowledged the pain they inflicted upon you, let alone apologized. Today, we want to look at two stories of survival. Both survivors are, without a doubt “well-adjusted” in adulthood, yet bare the scars from their childhoods each and every day. One has found solace in his forgiveness, the other finding strength in feeling the anger.

Victor Pacini understands the delicate nature of abuse. Not only is he a survivor of sexual abuse, but his sister was murdered in 2001 in a domestic violence tragedy.
