The Geek Watch Podcast, hosted by Brian J. Hatcher and Mandy Petry, gives you a weekly dose of scifi, fantasy, and horror on TV and in movies, all from a fan's perspective.
On today's podcast, Brian and Mandy discuss whether Hollywood is “on life support,” using the 2026 live-action Moana as an example of expensive, largely shot-for-shot remakes that may lose money after a roughly $100 million opening against a reported $250 million budget. They talk about audience reluctance to go to theaters, weak publicity for upcoming releases like Disney’s original IP “Hexed,” and worries around recent DC box-office performance as new projects like Superman and the R-rated Clayface approach. Mandy praises The Long Walk as a visceral, faithful Stephen King adaptation (with a slightly changed ending) that underperformed theatrically but became #1 on streaming, highlighting the “second look” problem for studios. Brian argues streaming and binge metrics are truncating TV seasons and degrading storytelling, and says spectacle can’t replace character-driven writing that motivates communal moviegoing.00:00 Is Hollywood Dying00:37 Moana Live Action Doubts02:48 Box Office Worries04:32 The Long Walk Revival07:38 Second Looks Don’t Pay12:10 What Gets Us to Theaters16:05 Streaming Changed Storytelling21:10 Spectacle vs Story25:43 Final Thoughts and Sign Off
after a steep 75% second-weekend box office drop, and Brian revisits his mixed feelings about the film, blaming “movie by committee,” multiple cuts, removed material, slow pacing, uneven stakes, and fan-service elements like Lobo that don’t serve the story. They also address how online backlash can shape reception before release, citing criticism of Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey over casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. The conversation expands to superhero fatigue, Marvel’s reliance on escalating spectacle and billion-dollar expectations, and the need for stronger storytelling and smaller-budget projects, praising creative successes like Everything Everywhere All at Once, Vox Machina, X-Men ’97, and Godzilla Minus One, plus notable horror projects from YouTube creators.00:00 Opener00:30 Supergirl Digital Release01:37 Review Hesitation02:49 Movie By Committee03:17 Lobo Fan Service04:27 Pacing, Stakes and Plot Holes07:14 Online Release Fallout08:33 Odyssey Casting Backlash10:18 Why Risk Matters11:53 All Star Cast Tangent13:32 Ensemble Movies Then Now15:42 Marvel Fatigue Reality17:03 Spectacle Versus Story19:44 Good Geek News20:25 Low Budget Creativity21:13 YouTube Horror Breakout22:05 Studios Must Adapt24:02 Closing And Sign Off

Brian describes workplace pressure to add AI everywhere, the difficulty of defining ethical boundaries for writers and artists, and concerns about AI being trained on unlicensed work, generating “AI slop,” and improving exponentially. They cover concerns that Paramount will absorb Warner Bros, fold HBO Max into Paramount+, and take on massive combined debt, prompting a credit-rating drop into “junk” status and higher borrowing costs, with the risk the deal could collapse and trigger further penalties. They also note politics influencing the merger, rumors James Gunn may exit, and AMC’s stock falling to about $1 ahead of CinemaCon. Brian talks about the unexpected benefits of an Apple TV box he bought recently. 26:18 – Brian is finally onboard the CARNIVAL ROW and DARK CRYSTALS ride. 28:06 – Brian also watched IT: CHAPTER II. He works very hard to keep it spoiler free. No laughing at his pain, please! But if you want the spoiler version, check out our Patreon page at https://www.patreon.com/geekwatch for the very first episode of BRIAN RUINS A MOVIE.
It pays to have money, and this week, Brian and Mandy discuss how much money Apple threw away on a new show that will never air.
00:49 – Brian quickly recaps the highlights of the new trailer for DISENCHANTED SEASON 2. Now, Mandy needs to see it ASAP! 02:00 – News on WANDA VISION! Images released show a 50s sitcom vibe. Brian has a solid theory about how a canonical arc about Wanda’s powers might be the basis for the show’s wacky premise. We also can’t forget that this series is leading into THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, which is set to be a horror story. 05:48 – Apple amazes us by cancelling an expensive series starring Richard Gere, already in production. Brian digs into the “creative differences” that caused the split between Apple the show runners. 13:23 – Brian finally saw the trailer for THE WORLD ACCORDING TO JEFF GOLDBLUM and it’s got him pumped! If you want more of this wonderful man, Brian strongly recommends the movie, MR FROST. Best. Devil. Ever. 16:14 – With the release of the card game CORALINE: BEWARE OF THE OTHER MOTHER, we get talking about interesting card games that Brian has seen on Kickstarter. A particularly neat one is based on a famous test that identifies psychopaths. Mandy recommends watching THE PHILOSOPHERS for more mind game shenanigans. 22:48 – SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME re-released to numbers that fell below expectations. Mandy wonders if Dragon-con contributed to the absence of geeks from the theaters. 25:52 – DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE. Mandy highly recommends watching this series. It has everything you loved in the original, but more! 30:46 – Mandy is keeping her counsel about CARNIVAL ROW until she’s watched a little more. Brian looks forward to catching up with both shows, and promises a spoiler-full review of IT: CHAPTER 2 for Patrons next week! Also, de-aged kids! Why?
What does the news from D23 mean to the Geekwatchers? Brian and Mandy discuss it this week!
BTW, check out our new Patreon page here!: https://www.patreon.com/geekwatch
1:13 – We start our discussion of D23 conference with the Disney Legends. It was no surprise that Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau won the title, but we were pleased by the inclusion of Ming-na Wen from Agents of Shield. We also found out that Disney plans on going against the trend of promoting binge-watching. Just like its subsidiary, Hulu, Disney will be releasing episodes one by one on its streaming site. 02:32 – We got a bunch of show announcements for Disney+! There is a LADY AND THE TRAMP reboot, LIZZIE MCGUIRE will be making a comeback, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL is getting a mockumentary, and we’ll get to find out what THE WORLD is ACCORDING TO JEFF GOLDBLUM. We also got the trailer for THE MANDALORIAN, which has left us eagerly awaiting its November release. 05:30 – And of course, there are quite a few Marvel shows to look forward to as well. Fans will finally get a MS MARVEL on screen featuring the teenaged Kamala Khan. They will also be getting SHE-HULK and MOONKNIGHT. Brian speculates that Intelligent Hulk in Endgame may have been a test run to see how well She-Hulk’s character would work on screen. He also explains Kamala and MoonKnight’s stories to Mandy. 09:39 – We now have a date for Black Panther 2, and it’s a long, long time away. Eternals added two more actors to its a-list cast roster. The Black Widow trailer shown in comic con will not be seen by the rest of us mere mortals till next May. How on earth did they manage to plug all leaks? 11:30 – Pixar also had two shows to promote. SOULS and ONWARD. Brian talks about the awkwardness of having Tom Holland take questions about the Sony-Marvel fight in the middle of a panel for Onward. 12:44 – Which brings us to the many rumors floating around about the two studios and how they might be thinking of resolving the Spidey issue. 16:52 – And finally, we come to the trailer of RISE OF SKYWALKER. Mandy wasn’t too impressed by the collage of disconnected footage passed off as a trailer, but we couldn’t help but speculate a bit about Rey’s Sith wardrobe and that very distinct double light-saber in the last scene. 18:28 – We wonder if AMC has plans to release their own streaming site since most of their best properties have not found a home yet. BREAKING BAD and WALKING DEAD are still on Netflix, but for how long? 20:51 – The trailer release for JOKER last week, left us reeling. Robert DeNiro’s character reminded Brian of The King of Comedy, an old movie with a similar storyline where DeNiro debuted by playing the Joker’s part. 23:31 - The war bugles have been sounded. Last Friday, Amazon released CARNIVAL ROW, while Netflix released DARK CRYSTAL. Let the streaming wars begin!
How did it happen? Brian and Mandy try to make sense of the possibility that Spider-Man is no longer part of the MCU. Also, they discuss Apple jumping into the streaming wars with both feet (and deep pockets).
00:38 – Apple TV+ has started grabbing headlines with the trailers for three of their original productions. THE MORNING SHOW with Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, and Reese Witherspoon, which explores ageism and sexism in talk shows; FOR ALL MANKIND, which gives us an alternate version of the history of moon landing; and SEE starring Jason Momoa, where the world goes blind in the future. 05:00 - Brian and Mandy discuss the huge budget for each episode of these shows and whether three original series would be enough for Apple TV+ to grab new subscribers. 11:46 – Netflix is back in the remake game with Kevin Smith helming a sequel to the 80s animation series, HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. Brian and Mandy mourn the cancellation of SHEERA and wonder if it had something to do with He-Man coming back to screen. 14:46 – YouTube has now released many of its original content, like COBRA KAI, from behind paywalls. From 24th August, viewers can watch these shows for free, though YouTube Red subscribers still get some added bonuses. 16:39 – Keanu Reeves is set to star in MATRIX 4, the sequel that nobody asked for. Brian and Mandy wonder if he intends to remake all his movies from past decades. 19:06 – And finally, we discuss Disney and Sony’s fight over Spider-man. Brian explains the details of how Sony came to exit negotiations, and we discuss whether Sony can go it alone without Marvel. Brian speculates that the audience response to FAR FROM HOME’s re-release might decide Sony’s fate in this war.
What has the Disney merger meant for Fox's movie plans? On this week's podcast, Brian and Mandy look at the movies that have been canceled, as well as the latest news from the streaming wars.
00:59 - We start with what streaming networks have been up to. CW has begun pulling its content from Netflix, HBO Max, and CBS All Access. Shows like BATWOMAN and NANCY DREW are all coming home and will be available on the new CW app with much anticipated spinoff KATY KEENE. 03:33 - We watched the trailer for DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE and we are in awe of the work that went into this. The only thing on our mind now is whether knowing the ending already will make the watch a better or worse experience. 05:19 - Nickolodean also kicked off two reboots on Netflix - INVADER ZIM and ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE. We're excited but we're also cautious. We haven't forgotten the fate of The Ren & Stimpy reboot. 08:36 - With the Disney merger, it now looks like many projects announced by Fox will never see the light of day. Nothing is sacred except the next AVATAR movie and Steven Speilber's WESTSIDE STORY remake. 13:30 - Ewan McGregror in talks to portray Obi Wan Kanobi in a spin off series. It could be something interesting. We discuss the possibilities. 14:13 - In Sony news, Andy Serkis is set to direct the next Venom, which we are extremely excited about. On the other hand, Neill Blomkamp has now backed out of directing the Robocop remake. 15:55 - The new CANDYMAN started filming in Chicago and is set of a release next year. Rumour is that the story deals with toxic fandom. We discuss how that fits we what we know of its themes. 17:56 - In a surprise move, Paramount just greenlit two G.I. JOE movies. They'll tell the story of Snake Eyes, though Ray Park will not be playing the character. 19:01 - The LITTLE WOMEN trailer is out, and Mandy talks about how she loves that every generation gets their own adaptation of this wonderful story. We discuss the cast and everything we liked about the trailer. 24:28 - We speak to our listeners about the exciting plans we have in the works.
The Battle of the Streaming Services heats up, and soon there will be blood!
Also, Brian and Mandy discuss Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood and the big-screen showing for the 10th Anniversary of Doctor Who: The End of Time.
And, Brian has an announcement on the future of the Geek Watch Podcast.
00:48 - The Streaming Wars Continue. HBO Max acquires the rights to air new and old episodes of Doctor Who. Disney brings on the heat by packaging ESPN+ and Hulu with its own streaming services. And finally, Disney threatens to unleash unending remakes of your childhood classics. Brace yourself. 05:31 - There's an avalanche of information on CW's upcoming CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. Old favourites from decades past will appear on TV again. (Look out for Batman and Lex Luther!) Black Lightning will likely make a cameo. The release schedule for the four part season finale might just end up driving us insane. 11:57 - Brian just watched ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD and strongly suggests watching the film in a theatre. The movie captures its period with stylish accuracy and Tarantino shows how much his craft has matured. We discuss Bruce Lee's portrayal in the film and how much of the story was fictionalised. 17:58 - Fathom Events held screenings for the 10th Anniversary of Doctor Who, which Brian attended (while Mandy was busy battling evil dragons in D&D). We discuss how things changed for this franchise ten years ago, and Brian feels a kinship with David Tennant as both wonder how time went by so fast. 23:45 - We finally come to Brian's announcement. It's been a fun and eventful two years for this podcast, but there's more to come.
The new Golden Age of Television is coming up geek! Brian and Mandy look at the present and speculate on the future of the many new streaming services coming out in the next few months.
00:39 – Brian just finished NOS4A2, so we take a moment to discuss how putting Joe Hill at the helm is always a good idea. There are plans for a second season afoot, and we expect to see an adult Vic in the next one. 03:33 – AMC looks set on winning the title of horror kings. We talk about the terrifying projects in their pipeline, especially Japanese horror inspired INFAMY, which is the second season of THE TERROR. This somehow brings us to Mandy’s intriguing theory about sparkling vampires. 07:45 – Amazon Prime has struck gold again with THE BOYS. Brian’s only advice is to go in without watching the second trailer. We also discuss THE TICK and compare it with other versions that we’ve watched. 13:28 – Streaming services are at war today, so we look back at how it all started. While some companies like Amazon and HBO are creating interesting originals now, we worry that none of the big names will take the risks that Netflix took in its heyday. What will the next innovation in streaming be? 24:59 – Before we wrap up, we mourn the loss of Ye Olde YouTube where new creators had the freedom to experiment. We’ll also have an announcement soon, so keep watching this space!
News from Comic-Con! Brian and Mandy talk about some of their favorite news coming from the 50th Anniversary of SDCC, and go into detail on the Marvel panel in Hall H and news on Phase 4. And they give their In memoriam of beloved genre actor Rutger Hauer.
00:48 - We start by remembering the life and works of Actor Rutger Haeur who left us last week. 03:58 - ENDGAME finally beat AVATAR at the box office. Brian and Mandy discuss the reactions of fans on both sides. 04:54 - Are movie studios giving up on Comic Con? 06:49 - The prominent no-shows of GAME OF THRONES. Things went as well as you would imagine. 09:07 - This was the Comic Con of the networks. TV brought forward its best foot, and we discuss the offerings. BATWOMAN, Ruby Rose leaves fans unhappy by not turning up. PICARD trailer creates an impact, and Brian is very excited about Michael Chabon helming the project. People complain about possible WALKING DEAD spin off. 13:51 - Warner Bros brings out the big guns with Crisis of Infinite Earths crossover. They also blow our minds by making everything on TV in the DC universe canon. Actors from previous shows like WONDER WOMAN and SMALLVILLE slotted to come back and play the same characters. 18:34 - Marvel follows up their victory lap with massive announcements about Phase 4. 19:22 - BLACK WIDOW rumoured to have action scenes that fans will love. The main villain will be the Taskmaster. Brian explains who he is and what we can expect from this legendary bad guy. 21:46 - Marvel’s TV line up is everything we hoped for. FALCON and WINTERSOLDIER will face off against evil mastermind, Baron Zemo. ETERNALS gets a massive cast, and Kevin Feige promises a proper Jack Kirby experience. SHANG CHI will feature the real Mandarin, and Brian speculates about how this might change the hero’s parentage. 27:46 - WANDAVISION is likely to change the source of Scarlet Witch’s powers. And the events of the show will be intertwined with the next Doctor Strange movie. Three more shows for fans to look forward to are Loki, Hawkeye, and the animated What If. 34:06 - THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER gets announced with quite a few shockers. Natalie Portman comes back as Mighty Thor, and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie’s set to be the first LGBTQ+ character to play a major role in a Marvel movie. 38:47 - Mahershala Ali will bring BLADE back on the screen. Fans are conflicted, we are not. 42:17 - So what does Marvel have left for the D23 convention? We speculate our hearts out.
Are you ready for Comic-Con? Brian and Mandy discuss the lead-up to geekdom’s biggest event and what they hope to get from SDCC’s 50th Anniversary.
00:28 - Before jumping into Comic-Con news and discussion of trailers, Mandy takes a moment to explain why she suddenly has a lisp. 02:38 - It's raining epic trailers this week! 'KING'S MAN' sneaked up on viewers and shocked everyone by being a 'Kingsmen' prequel! 'AD ASTRA' brings Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones Jr together for what looks like a thrilling Sci-Fi mystery. '3 FROM HELL' by Rob Zombie looks great but can it match up to the chills and complexity of 'Us' and 'Mid Sommar'? And finally, 'IT PART 2' is here. Brian and Mandy brace themselves to be terrified. 10:21 - Jay and Silent Bob are back with a reboot that stars half of Hollywood. Also Melissa Benoist gets cast as Chronic, which strikes Brian as the perfect setup to make fun of audience outrage over gender-switching beloved characters. 12:55 - And on that note: Lashana Lynch gets cast as 007 in the new James Bond movie! This makes nobody unhappy, because humans are reasonable. 14:10 - 'TERMINATOR: DARK FATE' brings back the crew from 'Terminator 2'! Brian and Mandy discuss the Comic-Con panel. 15:30 - 'SUPERNATURAL' to hold its final Comic-Con panel, even as they shoot the final season of the fourteen-year-old show. 16:09 - Brian takes a moment to admire David Benioff and Dan Weiss for agreeing to attend Hall H for the 'GAME OF THRONES' panel this year. Of course, that was until they realized that attendance might be harmful to their egos and decided not to. 18:13 - Surprisingly, Marvel will be in Hall H this year! Given that D23 is only a few months away, Brian and Mandy speculate about what they might announce. News that we already know - Taika Waititi is to helm 'THOR 4', and 'AGENTS OF SHIELD' will be ending its run with a seventh and final season. 20:59 - From Rick and Morty to the new Wonder Woman, there's a lot to look forward to on TV and film. Mandy and Brian turn to the realm of speculation as they wonder what bombshell the studios plan on dropping next week. Could DC be planning to cancel its cancellation of 'SWAMP THING'?!
Was the joy of Spider-Man: Far From Home enough to allow Brian to survive the terror that is Midsommar?
Join Brian and Mandy as they describe these two films, along with all the rumors leading up to next week’s San Diego Comic-Con.
00:57 - The world of movies lost two great actors this July. Brian and Mandy take a moment to go over the cinematic achievements of Rip Torn and Freddie Jones. 02:21 - Mandy discovered a new podcast drama that she wants everyone to listen to. It stars Richard Armitage and no animals were harmed in the making of it. 04:31 - Disney casts Halley Bailey as the Live-Action Ariel. Some people don't think a Black mermaid is realistic, so Brian and Mandy draw a picture of what a 'realistic' mermaid would look like. 07:01 - Mulan teaser trailer is out and for once a Disney Live Action movie looks better than the original animated one. 09:01 - Warner Bros has greenlit Sherlock Holmes 3. But Mandy is most excited about where it's set and whether Robert Downey Jr. will finally stop being the 'other' Sherlock. 10:24 - Todd Phillips, director of the upcoming 'Joker', claims fans will be angry with the story of the movie. Article: https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/joaquin-phoenix-joker-follow-comics-exclusive/ 13:28 - Brian discusses some Comic-Con rumors: Word is out that we might get to see a Black Widow teaser trailer. The Falcon and Winter Soldier TV show just hired a high caliber writer. Millie Bobby Brown may have been cast in the new Eternals movie. And Starwars.com released pictures of crimson Stormtroopers from Episode IX. 17:35 - Brian review Spiderman: Far From Home while skating dangerously close to spoilers. 23:21 - Midsommar turned out to be not what Brian had expected at all.
