No live callers
Ryan went to Brandon's list of pre-asked questions.
Our first question was about chronic insomnia. Ryan talked extensively about sleep hygiene and best practices on preparing for sleep.
I talked about different sleep archetypes and the nature of sleep cycles and what we might learn from those.
We talked about sleep from an evolutionary standpoint as compared to modern times.
Then we had a question about how the body responds to sickness, why is blood sugar high even when the person isn't eating, so Ryan and I speculated about the role of not eating in raising cortisol specifically to raise blood sugar.

My question is, when I am learning about the normal and chronic stress response slides, did you guys commit those to memory until moving on or did you find that clicked as you continued moving through the course? Going through the GI-map module. Can someone explain why Anti-gliadin IgA may appear normal when Secretory IgA is low? I’m assuming it’s because the immune system has shut down therefore making it difficult for the body to produce the inflammatory response of anti-gliadin IgA but would like to make sure my brain is processing this correctly.

In this week's show, here's what we discussed: Discussion about blood sugar management and various tools to track blood sugar, i.e. using a glucometer versus a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) Within that blood sugar discussion we talked about how not every client necessarily needs to track blood sugar - it’s more often beneficial as a teaching or self-monitoring tool for those with clear blood sugar dysregulation issuesOne caller asked about the roots of autoimmune disease, and whether a ketogenic diet could play a role We talked about autoimmune disease being multifactorial - a perfect storm of genetics, lifestyle, environmental stressors/triggers - in other words, there is no single root cause but rather “a death by a thousand cuts"Within that discussion we talked about the pros and cons of a keto diet, and how there is no “one-size-fits-all” diet for our clientsWe also had a discussion about forgiving our bodies and not faulting/guilting/shaming ourselves for our own health challenges We talked about the idea that “your health challenges aren’t your fault, but they are your responsibility."

In this week's show, here's what we discussed: How do we raise DHEA to counteract cortisol without increasing sex hormones as well? (as in a client who has low DHEA and high sex hormones) My thoughts are through DRESS but would we want to avoid giving hormone drops to someone with high sex hormones? If we give pregnenolone that would increase progesterone? If we give DHEA Reed said that was contraindicated in someone with high estrogen, maybe because that would increase estrogen? So do we just support hormone balance through lifestyle changes like reducing stress, eating organic meat, etc? I have read through the hormone pathways and just can help but wonder-- all sex hormones start with cholesterol and pregnenolone, so if someone has high sex hormones in anyway then hormone drops would be bad idea?Caller: How to choose between the Access Stress and Hormone Panel and DUTCH?Caller: Tips on program development...labs, pricing, length.

In this week's episode, here's what we discussed; Can someone please help with understanding the inverted ratio. There was only one case study displaying it in module 2, and not much info explaining it except for a list of a few possibilities as to why it could be. I have a grip on too catabolic, that seems to be every other case study and the standard of metabolic chaos. But what is too anabolic? It freaked me out big time, when my results came back with an inverted ratio and my mentor said I was too anabolic. On Today's Episode We Answer:
I heard Reed say In a slide that if we find H. pylori we would address that first even if parasites are present. but then in our protocol we are told to treat parasites first then bacteria than yeast. and H. Pylori is a bacteria so I am a little confused. What do we address first?
Caller: How and if to address Citrobacter finding on 401H. Client with no history or autoimmunity or UTI
Caller: Comparing the 401H to DSL GI Map
Caller: Client that is doing DRESS protocol but not seeing much positive change. What to look at next.
Do we ALWAYS include a Candida protocol at the end of a Supplement Protocol if a client's 401H detects parasite and/or bacterial infection, even if no candida shows on test results?I know Reed mentioned that we just presume there is some kind of candida in play as well as it takes really strong levels to show up on the tests results at all so it is often undetected. Just want to know whether we include Candida/Yeast Protocol supplement suggestions automatically in, sequenced at end of other protocols, or make a call on it based on how a client feels after other pathogen eradication protocols complete?
Can someone point me to the point in the course where Reed explains how to use the Hormone Check Record?

1. Another question- when reviewing the questions asked in the medical history - how do we interpret their answers and use the information in our investigation? Or do we just use this info in our case notes to share with advisors? I know in other programs we use a manual that explained what the questions and answers meant or how they impact the individuals health.
2. Hey, I was just browsing through follow up docs and there are many self assessments. The question is - so what? There are no benchmarks. Am I to assume that if they score anything on these they could have these issues? Seems like the 'symptoms' could relate to numerous things, surely we have a benchmark to understand this. Or is it just a recording device when one knows they have a diagnosed issue - such a thyroid issues.
3. Okay, I am gradually working on my Practical client BRAD. When we are reviewing a client's medical history form- do we focus on the items currently ranked 4-5 or any item they score?

Good afternoon, Is there a document that goes into greater depth on the descriptions for the supplement protocol? I would like have more knowledge for why, when and how to use.Package question. How often do you do coaching calls with your clients in a 90 day program? I am trying to figure out the package with appointments and online coaching support. Do you schedule a weekly call or every two weeks for R & R while keeping them accountable and motivated with emails?"What technically qualifies as fatigue? Because I feel like that's a specific term that I don't feel like I actually know how it's defined. I mean, I love to sleep but doesn't everyone like to sleep? What's the difference between being tired (like we all are here in this city) and actually being fatigued?" It is recommended to take Interfase Plus for 2 weeks before doing the 401H test. Are there any side effects to taking the full dose from day 1 or should we start with a lower dose and work up?

- I am coming to my tribe for more help. I have a potential client with 5th auto-immune disorder. I have never heard of this? Can someone enlighten on this issue? She also has Reynaud's, Sjogren's, celiac, dairy intolerance, fibromyalgia, Hashimoto's, arthritis, osteopenia. I am looking at food sensitivity testing, Gi-map, 101. and IP Test. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
- I’m learning about labs outside of the FDN 5 such as OAT, Dutch, and GI Map by watching the training videos. But it seems these should replace the original 5 vs being add-ons? I’m transitioning back to FDN after a couple years off to do more college so any input on the newest info and recommendations is appreciated.

2. Hey! I am listening to July 26th Friday call and I think it’s Brandon who talks about how St. John’s wort facilitates phase 3 detox and then he talks about how something else inhibits phase 3 but I can’t figure out what he said. It sounds like “kirksman” and I looked it up and couldn’t find it. I obviously don’t know about this plant/herb so if someone could lmk that’d be good for my notes!! Also, he said milk thistle has shown to inhibit phase 3 so we shouldn't take/recommend milk thistle for liver detox? Thanks!
3. How do you describe what you will be doing/ how you will be treating clients as an FDNP? I’m struggling explaining this to my mother and a few others and I keep hearing “so you’ll be like a naturopath but without the doctor license “ and “oh so I kind of like a personal trainer?”
4. Caller: Food sensitivity testing - all have value but not consistency
Here's what we covered:
1. Follow Up question on the MRT testing, the video indicates you can retest for sensitivities after a period of time. Can someone help understand how the retest works from a practical standpoint? If someone is showing high sensitivities and then they go through protocols to help heal the gut can that then cause them to not be sensitive to those foods and they could possibly reintroduce? It is a change in mindset as far as a true allergy that you have to avoid so just wanted some more understanding!
2. What is the process for reviewing lab work (as a new student)? Lab says it goes back to FDN then... ?
3. Question about DIM Pro: would you put it in a protocol where the client was not estrogen dominant or having weight gain issues but rather for general SH balance? Plan to put Adapt Align in there already. 40 male with low testosterone, high progesterone on 205A. Almost perfect cortisol pattern with a relative rise in the morning. Thoughts?
4. Hello, everyone, I was wondering how to order Bio botanical research products for clients. there seems to be no order form for Bio botanical research like there is for biometric and ultra life. I am assuming I emailed each individual company. With an order form Is that right? Sorry I feel like this is a stupid question.
5. 205 directions say do not eat or drink 1 hr before...is this just the 1st collection or is that the rule for all four?
6. Caller: Advanced dementia, how to handle
1. Caller: Do you fine-tune Metabolic Type using Diet Check Record sheet while on pathogen protocol?
3. I am looking everywhere for the doctor referral to send to your clients when somethings found on the 401H I’ve looked everywhere in FTN docs and I can’t find it?
4. Hey guys! I am preparing for my practical 1 and I have a couple questions. In the sample email I’m supposed to send before the session it states that I should attach the hormone check record as well as order forms for Biohealth and ultra life. I can’t seem to find these files anywhere.
5. I am preparing an upcoming talk, and would like to offer a FREE lab test, like the HTMA. Has anyone else done this, given away a lab kit as a promotion. If so, how do you handle the rest.?
6. Does the test comparison worksheet work with any laboratory? I’m in Mexico City and I’ve found a functional lab that has almost the same tests as BioHealth... so I’m wondering if the worksheet could work with this too!
7. If someone has shown improvement with hormone support (drops) and is now at the 12 week point of having taken these, do we start to titrate them off or keep going if it looks like they might benefit from a bit more improvement? how long is it ok to keep them on these? at what point do we see if their body can keep it up, especially if other contributors to hormone dysregulation, like stress etc, are more under control and other markers are falling into line AND they report feeling better/symptom improvement (including hormone related symptoms) even though hormone numbers look like they could do a little better? thanks for any help!
1. I'm a little confused about reading the 205 for a woman who has stopped menstruating... Reed says "just run it". Do we look at the results the same way we would if they ran it on day 19-21 of a regular cycle to establish estrogen dominance or other imbalances?
2. For the adrenal stress profile test, I know we are supposed to test on day 21, however, if we have very little spotting a few days before our periods begin we start counting on the day the spotting starts? Or the full-on bleeding?
3. In one of the M2 videos, Reed mentioned that they were working on an excel sheet that could automatically calculate which phase a client was in. Did that ever come to fruition?
4. I'm working on my onboarding session with Brad. For the package that I discuss, do I need to have just one package that I go into detail on? Or, do I tell him about different package choices that he can choose from? I have another question, too. Just to clarify, when the client gets the lab kits shipped to them, they fill out the payment info on the form that they send back with the kit...correct?
5. Caller: Tips on finding the right business coach
6. I just finished a consultation with a client. She is suffering from extreme fatigue and has had a rash on her hands that is red and blisters. She said she has had it for years. She has been to multiple dermatologists that just give her medication but no diagnosis. She has seen an allergist that thinks it is a form of eczema or could be linked to an autoimmune disorder. But they have done no further autoimmune testing. I want to make sure I start her off with the most beneficial lab work to get to the bottom of why she is having these flare-ups.

Practitioner Spotlight Episode with Daniel Walsh
Daniel’s story starts out much like that of most FDN Practitioners. He decided to change careers after he had overcome some extreme health challenges. At 35, Daniel, a certified EMT, suffered a heart attack (V-Tac, or raising heart beat) from taking a concentrated ephedra supplement (weight loss/fat burner). This led to three days in a cardiac unit and a long path of pharmaceutical management to keep tachycardia/A-fib under control. After 9 years Daniel developed anxiety, a 45-lb weight gain, GERD, chronic knee inflammation, and high cholesterol. He was taking multiple medications like they were candy.
Daniel’s passion is helping people with chronic issues–autoimmune to Lyme. Besides being a FDN-P, he is a certified western clinical herbalist, IIN health coach and EMT. He has been very successful with a lot of people over a relatively short period of time by using FDN’s foundational components and some very specific components as a clinical herbalist.

Practitioner Spotlight Episode with Ryan Degale
Ryan has always been attracted to finding why people have health issues. He has several lifestyle and nutrition coaching certifications where he specializes in corrective exercise and joint spacing to alleviate pain. With ten years of strength coaching under his belt, he enrolled in the FDN Program because he knew that diet and exercise was not enough to reach sustainable health. Ryan enjoys working with those who have joint pain and digestive issues. Personally, his most challenging aspect of the D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success® was stress reduction as he is in a high-profile job.
Ryan has learned that starting his clients out slow and emphasizing how important it is to take the supplements correctly and educating them on the “why” helps with retention and compliance. He enjoys doing the detective work and clinical correlation to help people see that their health complaints are not just “in their heads”.

Practitioner Spotlight Episode with Elise Purcell
Elise had been practicing Nutritional Counseling for seven years prior to finding FDN. She found that, though her clients did have significant health success, in more recent years, were starting to present deeper challenges that were not being healed by diet alone. She yearned to help them find the root cause and avoid the guessing game like she had experienced, thus her journey to FDN began!
A major take home from FDN training for Elise is that empowerment is everything! She feels that if a person knows what’s going on inside their body and why, they are more inspired to make the commitments to improve their health.
Practitioner Spotlight with Carmen Dunn, CNP, FDN-P
Carmen experienced a burnout for several years that eventually catapulted her to quit her corporate marketing job and go back to study holistic nutrition. The resulting effect of burnout left her with severe adrenal dysregulation, as well as, cortisol that was just shy of having Addison’s disease, a frightening revelation! During school and after graduation, she did everything under the sun to resolve these health issues. She worked with Naturopathic instructors, took all the herbal supplements, B vitamins, etc. and yet she still didn’t feel a shift in energy. This journey ultimately led her to find FDN.
Carmen shared a huge take away from her FDN training was the information on stress! She added, it was probably the biggest thing that impacted her practice. She feels that understanding real and perceived stressors have the same physical impact on the body was a huge shift. This has helped her make the most dramatic educational change with her clients and through her presentations.

Practitioner Spotlight with Danyelle Demchock
Danyelle was led to FDN through her desire to learn about functional medicine, underlying causes that create diseases if the body is kept in that state, subclinical assessment of the body, and a desire to help her clients to learn more about their bodies and start being the CEO’s of their health and well-being. Applying FDN to her own health, over time, has ultimately led to her to be a better detective with her own body. She has optimal health and knows what that feels like, so when something is off or if she is experiencing any symptoms, knows to immediately address the underlying causes. Danyelle said her main take aways from FDN training were — “Common” doesn’t mean “normal, a comprehensive understanding of how the body works, and subclinical assessment of what is really happening underneath the surface. An education that differentiates her from many other nutrition coaches…because she can provide tests that show what is going on in her client’s bodies.

Practitioner Spotlight with Rebecca Pemberton
In 1998, Rebecca had a high-stress job placing nurses at a major hospital in Atlanta – and all the unhealthy habits that came along with it – eating on the run, being on call all hours of the day & night. During a routine dental appointment, when the hygiene tools were placed on her chest, she found it was very painful. Rebecca’s dentist recommended that she see a rheumatologist because she might have this new thing called fibromyalgia. Rebecca said she had an easy diagnosis of fibromyalgia, back when people were being told it was all in their heads with all 18 trigger points being active. She spent the next eighteen or so months trying to work out a care plan, but basically wound up on some heavy duty medications and being bed-ridden!
After completing a Bachelors in Holistic Nutrition, Rebecca and her husband adopted their daughters.
Caring for them, with all of their health challenges made it very clear that she was going to have to be very intentional with their care plan. While the degree in holistic nutrition provided a lot of great theory, it didn’t provide a lot of tools. So, in searching for online lab testing for one of her daughters, Rebecca came across FDN and immediately signed up. The education and tools in FDN hasn’t just helped Rebecca with her own health but their three daughters have really benefited as well.

1. Clients that don't commit but still want your time. Do any of you experience clients that go through a Discovery Session with you but then proceed to email you multiple times (emails that require a ton of time) asking tons of questions; many of the same things that were addressed in the Discovery Session.... yet don't commit to working with you/moving forward. Such a time suck and I am struggling with where to draw the line on this.

4. Patient tested for H Pylori 5 years ago, followed a protocol, never retested. Did GI Map recently and came back H Pylori positive. In FDN course notes, it mentions that H Pylori can work its way into Gallbladder and be harder to eradicate. Patient has been on standard h pylori protocol (Pyloricil) for a month and hasn't noticed a difference in symptoms. Should I recommend a gallbladder flush at this point? If so, any specific ones to follow? Would the Liver-Gallbladder Quick Flush in our notes be sufficient?
6. As FDN, we favor keeping all of our pieces and parts. However, there are the occasions where that is not ideal. I have a client that was taken to the ER, where it was discovered that her gallbladder was inflamed/infected and contained one large, golf ball sized stone. Surgery promptly followed. Does anyone have any tried and true remedies for helping the body transition to the new norm of no gallbladder?

Practitioner Spotlight with Kathleen DiChiara!
While completing FDN, Kathleen found the principles of the DRESS for Health Success® program brought the focus back to the foundation of health. She found this to be different from even the “integrative” practitioners that still were focusing on supplementation without testing, which again left her with just “managing” her condition. Kathleen shared the most challenging part of the program was having to implement the changes while she still had unbearable pain and fatigue. Even so, she started not only applying the FDN principles on herself but also for her husband and three young children. Kathleen said, the DRESS program put her back into the driver seat of her own health!
Kathleen added, that while, the diet and exercise are still the biggest resistance for most people, in her opinion it is the most underestimated approach available to all of us! The FDN principles have allowed Kathleen to dig deeper for her complex clients and she believes that functional nutrition offers a higher level of support by identifying the food that will support the healing process and correcting the imbalances in the body through nutritional changes.
Practitioner Spotlight with Nanci Tunley!
Nanci says she loves how the lab work does force her clients to be honest with themselves. A common challenge she runs into when working with clients, is that they can become overwhelmed and the key to overcoming that is to not give them more than they can handle at once.
Nanci graciously shared that she structures her client services into thirty day, three and six month packages. She currently obtains her business via word of mouth referrals, online programs and webinars or speaking in front of audiences.
Nanci’s tip to her fellow FDN practitioners… would be to keep clients responsible and attached to the true outcome they desire. She adds that as practitioners, that means asking the right questions and not being afraid to hold them accountable.

Sonya had been very ill for three years and worked with multiple doctors before she realized that conventional medicine just didn't have anything for her. She wanted to find the root cause for her illness and truly overcome her diseases. Sonya eventually found a doctor who required her to do Metabolic Typing before working together. Fantastic Friday Call: Practitioner Spotlight with Kimball Willson
Kimball's story starts out much like that of most FDN Practitioners. She experienced a number of health challenges over the years and despite numerous medical tests, her doctors were unable to determine what was causing her pain and other symptoms. But what her doctors were never going to discover with their invasive measures was that Kimball had a severe gluten intolerance, a parasite, hormone imbalances, and nutritional deficiencies.
But Kimball eventually discovered FDN and things began to turn around...
Today, Kimball is feeling better than ever before and enjoys being able to work with clients in a way that makes an actual difference in their lives. Go Kimball!
When we asked Kimball if she had any tips for other FDN Practitioners, she was eager to share. Kimball advises that it's important to get your practice in order...
Be clear about the direction of your business
Develop your brand and get everything else in order (have an attorney draft contracts, set up your CRM, website, bank account, etc.) from the start. "Not having your business in order will weight you down mentally. It's a big investment up front, but do it right once."
Don't EVER work for free - your client will fail if they don't have skin in the game.
Kimball offers 3 levels in her program. She meets with her clients every 2 weeks for the duration of the program. They cover DRESS during the first consult. The second consult is the R&R session. After her clients receive their supplements, they schedule a 3rd consult for education about supplements.

Practitioner Spotlight – Maggie Reinke
– Brandon discussed Lesson 8 update, Testing food sensitivities. Sample consults now available – Midterm, Lesson 6, Lesson 7, Grads will have full access to these, trainees will need to take the quizzes to have access.
– Maggie’s background, what brought her to FDN. Maggie’s symptoms were abdominal pain, bloating, and digestive issues. She worked at a research hospital, wanted to get out of research and do something she was more passionate about.
– FDN testing on herself helped her to understand better (not just depend on someone else to tell her what to do), it helped her to take responsibility for her own health. Maggie tries to educate her clients now so it gives them power to help themselves and to heal. She wants to help clients to learn to think for themselves.
– She discussed who she works with.
– The biggest challenges/obstacles she comes up against when working with people: 1) Financial, a lot of the time it’s people’s priorities needing to be shifted. 2) Changing the way people eat, it’s a HUGE shift in thinking for some people. Some are more willing to make lifestyle changes over food changes.
– She decided to face her fears of public speaking so she would have the opportunity to help more people in her community.
– Marketing, what she uses right now is word of mouth, referrals, other practitioners, she is looking into diversifying this.
– She had to set boundaries for herself because she wants to learn and study so much. What you have and where you’re at right now is enough to help a lot of people out there.

(already ruled out Hpylori).
Reed: Reed discusses weaning clients off of PPIs and why stomach acid is so important to our health and
vitality.
29:00 – Live Question: Can Reed speak to hyper-parathyroidism
Reed: discusses parathyroid function and its role on calcium in the blood/bones. Speaks to how the
process of FDN reduces metabolic chaos regardless of the client’s “diagnosis”.
47:30 – Question: I have a client with a total cortisol of 9.5 for the whole day. I mentioned that he might want to
get tested for Addison’s since that was what the FDN program suggests. He doesn’t seem to have the other typical symptoms of Addison’s other than the low cortisol. Reed shares that he has seen Addison’s maybe twice in the last 15 years – it is very rare.
54:30 – Question from caller. How does the cyclical drop of progesterone before menses set off the
inflammatory cascade that triggers migraines.
Reed: Does it matter? The solution is to balance the contributors to MC and work non-specifically w/ FDN protocols.
