Then the talk turns to Icelandic football as they discuss the appointment of Heimir Hallgrímsson as the new Ireland boss and Shamrock Rovers progressing to the second qualifying round of the Champions League after a dramatic 2-1 win in Tallaght on Tuesday over Vikingur. We hear from Hoops Head Coach Stephen Bradley and goalscoring hero Johnny Kenny.
The Shamrock Rovers victory in the first qualifying round of the Champions League, only the fifth time a League of Ireland side has managed that feat in 14 years, guarantees them three more ties, €1.7m minimum in prize money and means they are one victorious tie away from group stage football.

Luke Jordan and Macdara Ferris chat through the Euros quarter-finals from Friday and Saturday and Macdara’s experience of watching Spain v Germany ahead of reporting on the Portugal v France game in Hamburg and of following the England v Switzerland penalty shootout on TV in the press box in Berlin’s Olympiastadion ahead of the Dutch win over Türkiye.
There is Ronaldo failing to follow the statistical protocol for penalty shoot-outs and choosing to go second, Gareth Southgate’s marginal gains for England – always going first in shoot-out if coin toss allows, not rushing to take a spot kick straight after the referee’s whistle - and Jordan Pickford’s water bottle fine print.

The latest EURO 2024 chat lands in from Hamburg. Luke and Macdara look back on the end of the round of 16 including the dramatic match between Austria and Türkiye.
Macdara witnessed first hand that amazing Mert Günok injury time save off Christoph Baumgartner and was impressed with Turkish teenage sensation Arda Güler’s brilliant display.
There is talk of Ronaldo’s tears, Taylor Swift, Season 2 of The Wire and they look forward to the upcoming quarter-final ties on Friday and Saturday. Macdara is in Hamburg for France v Portugal on Friday and enjoying the sights of a city a bit grittier than Leipzig.
The lads also preview the Netherlands v Türkiye tie which is set for Berlin’s Olympiastadion on Saturday night.

With Luke and Donal back at base, Macdara dials in from Berlin to give a flavour of two dramatic games he attended in Leipzig and Berlin.
It was a beer-flavoured celebration from Leipzig with the Croatian fans showering the press box in beer before Italy broke their hearts in the 98th minute.
Austria won a five-goal thriller in the Olympiastadion in Berlin to move beyond dark horse territory for this European Championship.
Macdara gives a summary of some entertaining post-match press conferences including Luciano Spalletti defending his formation - “I did my dissertation on 3-5-2” - Ronald Koeman faced blunt questions and gave equally blunt answers on the Netherlands, and Ralf Rangnick discussed Austria’s home advantage being based in Berlin.
On domestic matters, Donal gives his take on the season so far for Sligo Rovers, while Macdara looks at league leaders Shels - 12 games they have gone in front, turning into 12 games they’ve won - and Shamrock Rovers' waning five-in-a-row ambitions as they face into Europe and a tough FAI Cup tie away to Bohs.

It's the Italia 90 final and it's a beautiful disgrace of a game.
Holders Argentina having looked down and out many times in this tournament arrive riddled by suspensions with West Germany hungry for revenge after the World Cup 86 final defeat.
We're treated to some top class spoiling tactics, Motty going potty as the Argentinians assault the referee and the "Left Adventurer" Andy Brehme has his finest hour.
And there's a full inquest into the conflicting teams of the tournament without a notable holding midfielder.

Is there any point in this game or this podcast?

A fascinating semi final here with two sides as eager for revenge on Argentina and Maradona as they are to get to the final.
A tactically shaky England face questions are needing to change the system to see off Cameroon while a nervous Franz Beckenbaur admits West Germany are relieved to see the familiar (predictable?) English instead of the African side. This semi has it all. Tears, big looping deflections and calls for "penalty competition" to be changed to the Puc fada.

It's the quarter finals of Italia 90!
We kick off with Argentina v Yugoslavia in which is our first Ireland-less peno shoot out of the tournament but will we see Diego or Maradonna?
Ireland buoyed by an audience with the Pope and some garish 90's tracksuits go to Rome to take on Italy. There's analysis of THAT Bonner save, the reason why Sheedy is actually to blame and whether a big man - bigger man combo could have done the trick.

It's the final games in the round of the last sixteen!
Spain captain Emilio Butragueno is being outshone by his nickname-less teammates as they come up against Yugoslvia who are looking to Dragan Stojkovic for inspiration in a game of phenomenal goals and contagious offside appeals.
England march on without captain Bryan Robson and without many goals to their name. They come up against the free scoring Belgian side featuring Enzo Scifo who's being mooted for player of the tournament.It's probably not an ideal time for Paul Gascoigne to wear himself out playing Tennis with some American holidayers.

This may well be the most controversial day in World Cup history. Our panel wades through the drugging and the spitting in two massive knockout games on day sixteen of Italia 90.
It's the Superclasicas De Las Americas on the World Cup stage. Argentina are just about surviving while filling Mardaonna with any injections to get him through games. Bludgeoning Brazil meanwhile are still looking for that extra something but probably should have checked the water.
An extremely ill-tempered rivalry between Netherlands and West Germany spills over onto Voller's mullet and we discover how German butter helped Rudi and Rijkaard bury the hatchet.
And we hear how Dermot Morgan upset Eamon Dunphy, the English camp gets a faith healer and we check in with the Irish camp with one day to go before Ireland's first World Cup knockout game against Romania.

After sitting uneasy through the first rest day yesterday we're into the exciting knockout stages with two of the big underdogs of the tournament in action.
Having stunned the world in the group stages, Cameroon are in uncharted waters. They've got to get past a Colombia who despite under-performing have picked up many admirers for the unorthodox style of their players. We may well get another excuse to play that Roger Milla Pepe Kalle track.
Meanwhile the part timers of Costa Rica come up against a pretty inconsistent Czechoslovakia in a game badly affected by 15,000 missing Swedish fans and Costa Rica's injured goalkeeper.
There's rumours on Jack Charlton's job, Niall Quinn stocking shelves in Superquinn and inspired by Costa Rica's theatrical movie on Italia 90, there's speculation on who would be cast for Irish feature

Good Golly it's a bumper Italia 90 podcast today with four games wrapping up the last two groups.
After the vulture and Luisito "thrashed things out" Spain are looking in much better nick, they face a Belgium side being forced into a few changes. Meanwhile Uruguay & South Korea are trying to salvage what's been a pretty disappointing tournament for them so far.
Group F is still very much up for grabs as Jack Charlton makes some notable changes which might just do the trick for Ireland. Despite Ronald Koeman's crippling Aldridge fears, the Dutch bring their A-game in a clash for the "connoisseurs to savour". While England will need to find the 'Wright man' to break down the resolute Egyptian defence.
There's also scenes on O'Connell street with a reasonable amount of arrests, the Zodiac is up to his old tricks and Little Richard is sent some lovin.

It's the day of reckoning for Scotland and Jim Leighton who are looking for a big result to keep them in the tournament. They take on Brazil who are essentially a sexier Ireland. And we finally get an answer on whether Muller or Mo Johnston are the world's number 1 striker... (it's neither).
Meanwhile underdog's Costa Rica are up against a disappointing Sweden side in a game which inspires some Roy Keane-esc disgust in goalkeepers from one of our panel.

Groups D & A conclude today!
Already qualified West Germany take the foot off the gas but come up against an uncharacteristically defensive Colombia in a very busy afternoon for a Northern Irish referee.
Yugoslavia, suspiciously missing Srecko Katanec, face United Arab Emirates in front of virtually nobody in a game featuring the answer to many a quiz question.
There's also boring Austria lacking trickery up against USA who may be still be figuring out the rules, featuring a footnote on poor ol Bob Gansler.
And, finally caving to pressure, Italy include their two most prolific and valuable strikers for their final group game to Czechoslovakia. You can finally look forward to some Robbie Baggio talk.

Group B comes to a head today with surprise package Cameroon sitting pretty on top of the group..The Soviets will be hoping that 28 year old Roger Milla and co will ease off the gas and results elsewhere go their way in what could be their last ever World Cup game.
And it's a battle of the mercurial talents in Maradonna v Hagi as struggling Argentina take on Romania, with John Giles mooting a brain transplant for the latter in the RTÉ studio.

Day ten throws up the infamous Ireland v Egypt clash but is it as bad as everyone says? There's Egyptian sailors, an appalling Chris Morris tackle and the villainess origin story of Eamon Dunphy.

It's a busy day in Group C as an ugly but triumphing Brazil under fire from Pele take on Costa Rica. Under pressure Andy Roxburgh and Scotland make a few changes for a must win game against Sweden.

On match day seven, fans and journalists alike only have eyes for the unorthodox Rene Higuita as Colombia face a Yugoslavia side in desperate need of a result.
It's Roger Milla's time to shine and wiggle for Cameroon as they come up against a pretty anonymous Georgi Hagi for Romania, on a pretty tumultuous day in the history of their country.
And we find out whether a mass team brawl in training helped the USA in their match against an Italy side rich in striking options that remains unchanged despite some "haunting missed chances" in the previous game.

Game Day 6 sees perennial underachievers Spain take on fading force Uruguay with some talk on how Uruguay came to be branded a 'dirty' side and why this era of Spanish football was significant but forgotten.
El Diego rocks up in Napoli with his Argentinian side needing a victory against the USSR to stay alive. In an eventful game of mixed fortunes the BBC are very keen to point out "the old handball expert" getting up to his tricks again.

It’s been a great few weeks for Ireland’s Modern Pentathlete Natalya Coyle. In June, Natalya and her team-mate Arthur Lanigan-O’Keeffe finished in first place at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup IV. That was followed by the news that she had been retrospectively been bumped up to sixth place at the Rio Olympics. Natalya joins Declan and Dave on the phone from a training camp in Poland as she talks about the increasing profile of Modern Pentathlon in Ireland, drugs in sport as well as her targets for the future. The transfer window shut last week and we have two players on the Sportscast that secured moves from the West to Dublin clubs. First up St. Patrick’s Athletic new signing Paul O’Conor talks about life at his new club having moved from Limerick and the targets for the rest of the current season. It’s been a big few years for Lee Grace. Having started out with Wexford Youths, a move to Galway United meant leaving his job in the Army. After the foreplay of pre-season, the Airtricity League season 2016 finally kicked off on Friday and with it came a few surprises, plenty of goals, and even more cards. This week’s Extratime.ie Sportscast features three managers who had varied experiences on the opening weekend. Wexford Youth’s Shane Keegan lead his team into their first Premier Division game but in front of almost 1,000 fans at Ferrycarrig Park, his side lost out by two goals to nil to Longford Town. He talks to Gareth O’Reilly and Josh Dolan about the game and his move to being a full time manager with the club. Last season on the Sportscast Ollie Horgan predicted his club wouldn’t be promoted. They subsequently were promoted. This year, after an opening day victory over local rivals Derry City, he remains consistent as he ponders whether his side will avoid the drop in their first season back in the top flight. Our final guest is Tommy Dunne fresh from one of the big surprises of the weekend – Galway United’s 3-1 win over St. Pats in Inchicore. Dundalk’s back-to-back league winning manager Stephen Kenny talks to Sportscast presenter Gareth O’Reilly and studio panel Macdara Ferris and Dave Donnelly after his side sealed the 2015 title last week.
