Jimmy Gonsalves, CFM, SFP is a facility management professional with the San Diego Unified School District while he also serves as President of IFMA’s Academic Facilities Council. The big takeaway from this episode is most certainly that we should "never judge a book by its cover"! The five thoughts that Ed has identified are as follows:

  1. Facility managers don’t manage facilities.

  2. Stop! You’re not networking, are you?

  3. Cost savings? Yeah, that’s on my list. I’ll get around to it.

  4. Customer service is not my job.

  5. Hurry up and pause.

Gary McKelvey, Jr. of Siemens Corporation (our very first podcast guest!) returns to the show to reminisce about how far we have come at this milestone for the "FM Innovator Podcast": Episode #50! Gary and Mike are both passionate about elevating the facility management profession, and their work at the Capital Chapter of IFMA has given them many opportunities to collaborate and build partnerships that help deliver innovative solutions to our FM community. Today, they focus on facing the challenge of our industry's "skills gap" and the need to fill "The FM Pipeline" with talent that will help manage the built environment into the future. Gary talks about his involvement with the IFMA Foundation and their efforts to bring "The Facilithon" to state-wide "SkillsUSA" competitions. Mike asks about these opportunities and hopes to clarify the mission for listeners, as there are many FM professionals and industry-partners that might not be aware of these initiatives. Once again, the role of military veterans in the FM industry and how they are bringing their military experience into our facility management world is discussed. Mike and Gary share memories from their first interview, they offer several "shout-outs" to past guests of the podcast, and of course, there is some really bad singing by Mike, once again. Enjoy as we celebrate "The Big 5-0" together!

Jacob Morgan is a keynote speaker, a three time best-selling author, and a futurist with an understanding of what organizations must do to "win the war for talent" in today's workplace. Mike Petrusky talks with Jacob about his latest book, "The Employee Experience Advantage", which is focused on understanding how the workplace is changing and why culture, environment, and physical spaces are key factors in the future of work. Jacob shares his acronym ("COOL” Office Spaces) to determine if an organization is offering physical space that provides the four things that employees care about most when it comes to their work environment. Mike asks about Jacob's "The Future of Work Podcast" and the interviews he has done with executives from Gensler (Ep. 110) and CBRE (Ep. 145), two specific episodes that will be of great interest to the "FM Innovator Nation". We learn more about the evolving role of facility managers in the "workplace experience center" and the future trends in physical space that will help better connect employees to their organization's mission.

There are just a handful of names that come to mind when we think about the "legendary" contributors to our FM community, and Teena Shouse, CFM, IFMA Fellow, is certainly one of them! Mike Petrusky catches up with Teena (someplace warmer and near a golf course, for sure!), as she enjoys more free time, but continues to inspire us. They talk about Teena's industry speaking engagements, ongoing involvement with IFMA, FM education, and her passion for mentoring the next generation of facility management professionals. In today's fast-moving marketplace, having both a vision and a plan to reach your goals is essential for success in the FM world. We must work hard to build a culture of collaboration to help elevate the profession and allow both facility managers and industry partners to be seen as "value providers". By understanding the many roles and responsibilities of a facility manager, FM industry-partners and the entire community can be in a better position to help meet the needs of the workplace together. FM professional Dexter Barrow talks with Mike Petrusky about caring for his facility, its occupants, and building trusted IFMA relationships at both the local chapter level and around the world during World Workplace. The importance of collaboration with fellow facility management professionals, other internal departments, and outside partner companies shines through during this interview. Dexter also discusses how investing in the development of the next generation of FMs is essential to the future of the profession. Facility managers must be aware of new technologies and have an understanding of workplace strategies to manage the built environment effectively. As we head into 2017, let’s find ways to collaborate, innovate, and elevate the FM profession together. What are your facility management goals? For industry partners, it is essential to fine-tune your marketing messages so you can be known as a resource that educates and provides value to FMs. If you are a facility manager, leveraging technology is one way to improve your building operations and manage your facilities more efficiently. Everyone should plan to make professional development a top goal for the New Year as we break out of our daily routines and achieve something new and great for our FM community. Mike Petrusky shares stories from Seth Godin about how we can step outside of our comfort zones and challenge the status quo. We must “be comfortable being uncomfortable” as we seek to create value in our workplaces. Topics we will cover on future podcast episodes include FM technology, management and workplace strategy, and marketing strategies, for both industry partners trying to reach FM decision-makers, as well as FM practitioners who need to sell solutions internally to their organization’s leadership. 2017 will bring us opportunities to gather at industry conferences such as the NFMT Show, IFMA's Facility Fusion and World Workplace. Let’s make it a great year for the “FM Innovator Nation”!
