For Season Three we are knitting the Basic Cable together. Be sure to sign up for the newsletter to get your copy of the pattern in your Welcome email. Visit http://www.kathleendames.com/thesweater for details. Thanks for joining me, and happy knitting! xoxo, Kathleen

Today (finally! the technical issues and building construction have been a thorn in my side - I’m so sorry!) we are talking about splitting the sleeves off from the body plus a clever use of the provisional caston in the middle of the round. You will love how this simple technique makes finishing your sweaters just a matter of weaving in some ends.

Today I’m sharing some favorite colorwork techniques (two-handed knitting, anyone?) plus the way I do provisional castons. If crocheting a chain takes you out of your comfort zone, my provisional two-tail long-tail cast-on might just do the trick for you.

And one gentle reminder: YOU are the boss of your knitting.

Time for some real-time Sweater talking! Some knitters have asked me questions already, and I will be taking whatever questions you have live Friday, April 26th, at 10:00 EDT. Don’t worry if you can’t join me on YouTube live, as this will become a video the minute it’s over (and then I’ll upload the audio podcast). Questions you have about colorwork, top-down construction, and any other knitting topics are encouraged. I love talking about knitting, so (as always) this should be a lot of fun.

Oh, swatching, you are not always our favorite, but you give us lots of good information (sometimes). Today we talk a little bit about different kinds of swatches, including my favorite: the swatch that is also a thing (like the Enwreathed Cowl or one of two sleeves). I also talk a little bit about needles and how you may only need one to knit a sweater (that’s how I do it, anyway).

Remember: Episode Five: LIVE SHOW will be here before we know it, so start asking your questions now, and I will answer them on the air in a couple of weeks. The best way to ask is by hitting reply on a newsletter email message, but you can also leave comments on episode pages on YouTube or on posts on Instagram/Twitter or on my Ravelry group.

Ooh, it’s time to talk a little bit about yarn. My favorite! Today’s mantra is: Know thyself (or thy intended recipient). When choosing yarn, it helps to consider what kind of sweater you WANT and how you will take care of it. Different fibers and their preparation will affect the yarn and, in turn, your final knit.

Apologies for the technical difficulties that delayed this episode. I believe I have things worked out, and next week should be a longer episode (yay for new, bigger memory cards!). Before you know it, Episode Five: LIVE SHOW will be here, so start asking your questions now, and I will answer them on the air in a few weeks. Are you ready for a new sweater? How about giving colorwork a try? You’re in luck! This is Episode One for Season Four of The Sweater with Kathleen Dames. We will be knitting Enwreathed Pullover over the course of 12 weeks. Well, you’ll be knitting Enwreathed, and I will be working on a new design, The Heart Wants Pullover, which has similar elements (so I can show you what we are talking about) but with some differences that should be illuminating. I’m so excited and hope you are too!

Today we are going to talk about choosing your size, what ease means, and how you can customize your sweater. Remember: You are the boss of your knitting :)

It’s swatching time! Not the most fun, but to make sure you knit the sweater you expect, you need to swatch. I’ve got some suggestions for making your swatching time productive, as well as suggestions for how to make adjustments. There are many ways to avoid getting trapped on Sleeve Island. In addition to knitting one sleeve before the body and another after, check out the “War and Peace” method of knitting two at once (socks in Knitty’s example, but this would work for sleeves, too): http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall06/FEATextreme2in1.html Visit the episode thread in the Kathleen Dames Design Ravelry group: http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/kathleen-dames-design/topics/3448816

It’s time to set aside stitches for the underarms. We will need to do so on body and sleeves. Then when we join everything together for the yoke, we will pair up sets of stitches for each underarm. We are on Spring Hiatus for the month of April. Season Two of The Sweater with Kathleen Dames will begin in May, and we will knit the Purly Pullover together.

Today we are taking a peek at my popular A Vest for Charles and Sotherton patterns.

I misspoke! The vest in question was worn by King Charles I to his beheading. See more here:

http://www.gettyimages.ca/detail/news-photo/the-vest-that-king-charles-i-allegedly-wore-on-the-day-of-news-photo/96819393 and here: http://needleprint.blogspot.com/2011/06/king-charles-i-his-knitted-vest.html The patterns used in my modern interpretation include King Charles Brocade, seen in the yoke of the original, and and XOXO pattern featured between some welting at the bottom of the placket.

Sotherton was inspired by the Sotherton estate in Mansfield Park. If you are looking for a figure-flattering DK weight sweater, she’s it!

Knits seen in this episode

-On Lady Jane: A Vest for Charles http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/a-vest-for-charles

-On Kathleen: Sotherton http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sotherton

Next week we will review the Purly Pullover pattern and talk measurements.

Thanks for being here, and happy knitting!

Just one sleeve to go, then we will bring everything together in the yoke - my favorite part! Be sure to match this second sleeve to the one you made way back in Episode Three https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mW-AV-32ww

And to keep you distracted from your (brief) visit to Sleeve Island, let's talk a little bit about our button options. I'll show you how I sew on a two-hole button plus give you some food for thought with shanked, cufflink-style buttons.

Today we will cast on for the body with with the Two-Tail Long-Tail Cast-on, then we will move our working yarn over to the end of the button band, as well as go over making buttonholes. Just a reminder that buttonholes are made on both button bands. And if your row gauge is different than the pattern gauge, be sure to account for that when creating your buttonholes as we work our way up the body.
