Laura Georgakakos kicks off the service by reading Psalm 33:12-22 NIV. Those in attendance are encouraged to read the Scripture along together. Following the reading, the Worship band leads us in worship through song with "10,000 Reasons" and "God With Us." Scott Lee (vocals in Worship band and long-time member of LJCC) asks those to stand and greet people around them during the greeting, soon followed by the a video announcement. As people take their seats, Ryan Silvia gives the morning announcements over video.
Laura then comes back up and gives the Prayers of the People before the sermon. Pastor Steve Murray continues the sermon series, "Wisdom in Bite-Size Pieces" with a sermon on "Wisdom in spiritual growth."

She also explains an upcoming opportunity to be Jesus' hands and feet in the world by participating in a construction project alongside Habitat for Humanity. Gerard and his wife Jeannie are the founders of Awakening to God Ministries (ATG) that was birthed in 2015 out of the deepest suffering. After many years on the ‘mountain top,’ their hearts were shattered after the suicide of their precious son Alex (17) in 2005. Darkness engulfed Jeannie’s broken mother heart, her love for Gerard turned to hatred, and she lost her faith for a season. She was rescued and restored but then, unbelievably, their beautiful daughter Rebecca (32) drowned in a tragic accident. Knowing she couldn’t continue, Jeannie decided to take her own life, only to be rescued and transformed by a divine encounter!
Gerard and Jeannie are now sharing God’s love, faith and hope to bring good news to the poor, comfort to the brokenhearted, freedom to the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. They have written several books and produced the Triumph of Marriage course.
Gerard has experience as a 30-year Int’l Banker, Pastor, Author and CEO of Alpha USA 2008-2014. They currently live in Malibu, CA. and their son Ben lives in London, UK.

A gifted and dynamic spokesperson for World’ Vision’s worldwide humanitarian work, under the title “Catalyst,” Steve can be found engaging faith leaders, strategizing on World’ Vision’ s major initiatives or communicating about global issues that affect the poor. ‘Steve’s background has entailed serving on the staff of ‘Illinois’ Willow Creek Community Church to facilitating Socratic forums for Fortune 500 executives to refugee relief work on Cambodia/Vietnam border. He joined World Vision in 2001.

Previously he served in the New Providence Presbyterian Church of New Jersey and as the Founding Pastor of the Irvine Presbyterian Church in California. He has written several books, including "Serving God: The Grand Essentials of Work & Worship," "Waiting: Finding Hope When God Seems Silent," and "God’s Prayer Book: The Power and Pleasure of Praying the Psalms." He is also a contributing editor to Christianity Today and Leadership Journal. Ben earned his M.Div. from the American Baptist Seminary of the West. He and his wife, Lauretta, have four grown children.

The worship service kicks off a reading of Psalm 63:1-8 by Bridgid Reilly of the Board of Trustees of La Jolla Community Church. Then the worship band leads us into worship through song with a two-song worship set. Guest worship leader Chris Surdock is joined by Alyssa Gonzales as the LJCC worship band opens worship through music with "Lord I Need You" and "Your Great Name." Following announcements Nils Jansma gives the Prayers of the People. Steve Murray then reads Matthew 5:1-12 before the message. Bruce Baker follows the reading with the message of the morning. After the message there is the Prayer for the Offering. "Nothing But The Blood" is the offertory song, followed by "Forever Reign." Rev. Dr. Bruce Baker serves as Associate Professor of Business Ethics at Seattle Pacific University. He studied physics at CalTech, started a technology business in San Diego, and then moved to Microsoft to lead a new product development. Bruce says he likes the weather better in Seattle, if you can believe it! He left Microsoft to attend seminary, and became a PC(USA) pastor in Seattle. He earned his Ph.D. in Theology, and then became a full-time professor at Seattle Pacific University. Bruce loves cycling, backpacking and generally spending time outdoors.

Expectation: The people of Israel yearned for the promised Messiah who would establish God’s justice, love and righteousness on earth, fulfilling the promises of God proclaimed by his prophets. The Old Testament is filled with longing and anticipation of the Messiah. Will he come this year? Why does he tarry? Has God forgotten us? Jesus came at just the right time, fulfilling or confirming the prophecies, and establishing God’s kingdom on earth. Eventually he will return, making a new heaven and earth. We celebrated Holy Communion together this Sunday. The band sang "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus" during Communion. Morning worship wraps up with Whitley Wilburn leading on "Waiting Here For You."

Gerard and wife Jeannie are the founders of Awakening to God Ministries (ATG) that was birthed in 2015 out of the deepest suffering. After many years on the ‘mountain top,’ their hearts were shattered after the suicide of their precious son Alex (17) in 2005. Darkness engulfed Jeannie’s broken mother heart, her love for Gerard turned to hatred, and she lost her faith for a season. She was rescued and restored but then, unbelievably, their beautiful daughter Rebecca (32) drowned in a tragic accident. Knowing she couldn’t continue, Jeannie decided to take her own life, only to be rescued and transformed by a divine encounter!
Gerard and Jeannie are now sharing God’s love, faith and hope to bring good news to the poor, comfort to the brokenhearted, freedom to the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners. They have written several books and produced the Triumph of Marriage e-learning course.
Gerard has experience as a 30 year Int’l Banker, Pastor, Author and CEO of Alpha USA 2008-2014. They currently live in Malibu, CA. and their son Ben lives in London, UK.

The Reverend Ben Patterson retired this spring as Campus Pastor at Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California. He began serving as Campus Pastor in the spring of 2001. As Campus Pastor, Ben was responsible for organizing the college’s chapel program, mentoring students, counseling, and encouraging every person in the Westmont community to grow toward their full maturity in Christ.
Ben has written several books including: Serving God: The Grand Essentials of Work & Worship, Waiting: Finding Hope When God Seems Silent, Deepening Your Conversation with God, The Prayer Devotional Bible, He Has Made Me Glad, and God’s Prayer Book: The Power and Pleasure of Praying the Psalms. Ben’s most current work, which was released in 2011, is entitled: Muscular Faith. As the title suggests, this book encourages believers to strengthen their hearts, souls, and mind for the great journey of faith.
Ben served the New Providence Presbyterian Church of New Jersey from 1989 until his appointment as Dean of the Chapel at Hope College in 1993. From 1975 to 1989 he was with the Irvine Presbyterian Church of California, of which he was the founding pastor. He was also minister of youth and adult education at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church of California. Previous to that he was assistant minister to college students at the First Baptist Church of Pomona, California working with the Claremont Colleges.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from La Verne University in 1966 and his master’s of divinity from The American Baptist Seminary of the West in 1972.
He and his wife, Lauretta, have four grown children – Dan, Joel, Andy and Mary and several grandchildren.

Karen Frimodig reads Scripture from Ephesians 4:7; 11-16. Guest speaker Bob Goff continues the sermon series, "God is For You!" with a sermon on "Love Does." Speaker Biography: Bob Goff is the New York Times Best-Selling Author of "Love Does", as well as an attorney who founded Restore International, a nonprofit human rights organization operating in Uganda and India. Bob often appears at various leadership and university events, inspiring current and future influencers to get to the ”do” part of life. With a team of dedicated people, Restore International has pursued justice for the needy. Restore worked with Uganda’s judiciary in bringing to trial over 200 cases, including cases involving children who were languishing in jail without trial. In India, Restore investigated and intervened to relieve minor girls from a life of forced prostitution, leading to the identification and arrest of over 80 perpetrators. Bob’s inspiration has been fueled by the friendships he has developed with others around the world who desire to pursue strategic ways to help people in need. As an attorney, Bob shares leadership in a Washington law firm, Goff & DeWalt. Additionally, he serves as the Hon. Consul for the Republic of Uganda to the United States. He is also an adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School where he teaches Nonprofit Law, and Point Loma Nazarene University, where he teaches Business Law.
