It's February of 2021 and a lot of us entered 2021 cautiously. Some of us needed January of 2021 to recover from 2020. Even though 2020 wasn't completely a waste, we still needed that recovery time to prepare and outline our resolutions/goals for this year. If you are like me and needed a recovery month from 2020 to get your mind, body, and spirit caught up to the new year, I got you. I understand. You are my people. I am going to talk about the expectations I am setting for myself, why I am creating them, and the accountability measures I am implementing to ensure my goals are accomplished.

I discuss how crazy the holidays make me and why this year feels so much more hopeful. Between teaching, holiday shopping/gift-giving, and family,  the panic attacks seem inevitable. Additionally, a global pandemic has not done stopped the crowds from being out. How are you dealing with all?

I will discuss education and my relationship with it as a teacher in a non-union state in more detail in an upcoming episode.  Until then, here is a snippet from episode 7 of my conversation with Aaron Isaiah about his time in education thus far as a young African American male.

What do you think of when you think of community? How do you influence your community? The morning of November 9, 2016 was the beginning of an alternate reality, a reality from which we are so close to being free. I will be speaking with the writer, actor, poet Aaron Isaiah in this episode about what community means to him and how his desire to impact change within his community led him to become a poll watcher for this year's voting season.  Please note that names have been changed to protect the privacy of our fellow citizens.  Learn more about Aaron Isaiah by following him on social media, @_aaronisaiah.  Follow me @docialuna or Instagram and Twitter Keep up to date with the podcast @beingbetterpod

We don't like to discuss the ugly of depression, especially in some cultures. For some of us, the guilt and shame attached to it make it worse, but better is possible especially if we honestly talk about it. Preferably, with a well-trained therapist, but here is a start.

While there are many emergency mental health hotlines, if you or someone you care about is having thoughts of suicide, call 911 for immediate help.

Some of the reputable 24-hour mental health hotlines that can provide you with support, education, and resources include:

Mental Health America Hotline: Text MHA to 741741. Mental Health America is a nationwide organization that provides assistance through this text line. You will be linked to someone who can guide you through a crisis or just provide information.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255. Crisis intervention and free emotional support are available, which is helpful when you need confidential assistance during a time of emotional distress for you or a loved one. The helpline is open 24/7, and a live online chat is available as well.

Crisis Text Line: Text CONNECT to 741741. Specialized crisis counselors are just a text message away on this free, confidential 24-hour support line. To further protect your privacy, these messages do not appear on a phone bill. The text line also provides services and support if you are upset, scared, hurt, frustrated, or distressed.

The Samaritans: 1-212-673-3000. This is a New York-based organization that operates a 24-hour crisis hotline for anyone in the area. Even if you’re not in crisis but feel like you need emotional support, this hotline can help.

Veterans Crisis Line: 1-800-273-8255. Text a message to 838255. Operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, these services aid veterans and their families who may be in crisis by connecting them with VA responders.

We all have flaws, but are we comfortable with talking about them openly? I will tell you yours if you tell me mine OR I will go ahead and tell you mine.  Have you decided to leave your setting at "you get what you get"? Have you looked in the mirror and said, "You need to get it together because this ain't it." I am in this place now. I want to be better, but it is just so comfy here. However, I am not reaching my full potential here either. I cannot honestly be a good person, family member, friend, or colleague here. Listen, I am standing in the mirror saying, "Not today or any other day, SATAN!"

Let's be better together!

I have created more unnecessary trouble for myself simply by not believing in me. It's ridiculous, I know. However, I am turning over a new leaf with the coming of autumn. I do not have time to waste on not being sure. I am stepping out on faith and doing it anyway. Hopefully, by the end of this episode, you will be ready to do the same. Before you leave, tell me how has education impacted your life?
