In the third episode of Daddy Ball we speak with Bob who also coached his son up until a point, and then stepped back from coaching to let a paid coach take the reigns. Bob wanted to spend some time as a parent enjoying the game, and allowing another coach to step into his previous role helped him enjoy the game with his son more. Bob gives some great advice about letting your child in on the decision making process of trying out and joining a team. At the end of the day a very small percentage of players progress to College or Pro baseball, so if they are comfortable and having fun that is the most important part of the decision. In the second episode of Daddy Ball, we sit down with Robbie who offers his views from both sides of this topic. On one hand his son plays for a paid coach team in a relatively new organization, and after some evaluations and tryouts trusted his gut and went with this particular coach with this new organization. Robbie also coaches a league team, and is hyper aware of the potential issues that could come up, so in all likelihood is too hard on his son to avoid any conflicts. This is a fantastic situation where we get to know a coach who is aware of what is being said out there and does his very best to help everyone on the field develop a love for the game, rather than worrying about who is playing where and how much playing time they are getting. Today on the Coach’s Commute I chat with Brooks Estrada, a former collegiate baseball player with a pretty important message for young athletes and parents regarding social media. Brooks shares some past experiences where young athletes are posting questionable content on their social media accounts, and as a result losing out on playing time, being asked to leave the team or getting turned away by recruiters before a conversation even starts.
