USA! USA! Team USA won the World Junior Championships this past week over Canada in an exciting gold medal final. Also, the Oilers went 2-2 on a recent Eastern road swing, the last two games which they dominated – particularly the line of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Pat Maroon. The Flyers have been a bit down as of late, and Steven and Rachel revisit their preseason predictions now that we’re halfway through the 2016-17 NHL season!

Rachel’s Notes:
Happy New Year! On the first Hockey Feels episode of 2017, we talk about the Centennial Classic, the Winter Classic, a disastrous Flyers road trip, the World Juniors, and more!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
The NHL was on its annual holiday break this past weekend, but both the Flyers and the Oilers (yes, even the Oilers!) are in a solid playoff position as of the stoppage. Meanwhile, the beginning of the World Junior Championships has Rachel excited as no fewer than nine Flyers prospects are playing in the tournament for various nations. It’s the last Hockey Feels episode for 2016! Happy holidays! And Happy New Year!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
The Flyers winning streak finally came to an end at a staggering ten games this past week, but it was an impressive feat. However, thanks to the Columbus Blue Jackets’ own nine-game winning streak, and to the fact that the Metropolitan Division is the best division in hockey, the Flyers are still only fifth(!) in their division. The Oilers are still in the top three in the Pacific, which in the middle of December is quite astonishing given recent history. Coming soon: the holiday break! And the World Juniors!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
The Flyers are red hot. Winners of eight straight games going into recording, Rachel’s favourite team made Steven’s Oilers one of their victims this past week, winning 6-5 in a tense and entertaining affair. But thanks to the rest of the Metropolitan Division, particularly the incandescent Columbus Blue Jackets(!), the Flyers are still only good enough to be tied for fourth in the division. The Oilers, meanwhile, have treaded water as of late, but are still just a point out of first in the Pacific, and Connor McDavid is running roughshod through the league. All this and more on today’s Hockey Feels!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
What a week for the Flyers! Five straight wins, and an NHL 1st Star of the Week award for goalie Steve Mason. The Oilers, while slightly less impressive in style, still managed to take five of six points from their last three games. including a rare win over Anaheim on the weekend. But this is all setting the table for this season’s first Oilers-Flyers matchup later this week…
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
Thanksgiving trips and various other maladies have delayed this week’s episode, but Rachel, emboldened by a stellar performance from Flyers’ goaltender Steve Mason, and Steven, felled by a cold he got at a Doctor Who convention, still find time to talk about the Flyers goalie situation, Gerard Gallant’s firing, and more on this midweek installment of Hockey Feels!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
It’s almost US Thanksgiving, which is usually the unofficial measuring point to see where teams are at in the NHL standings and what to expect for the rest of the season. As of now, teams like the Oilers, Flyers, Devils, Jets, and Blue Jackets are hovering near respectability. Can they stay there for the rest of the season? Steven and Rachel discuss this, the All-Star Game rules, and more on this week’s Hockey Feels!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
It was a rough week for the Hockey Feels crew, where the results of the 2016 US election knocked most of the joy out of life for both Rachel and Steven, and their enthusiasm for hockey and other diversions also suffered. Good thing, too, as both the Oilers and Flyers had less than inspiring weeks on the ice. However, the crew presses on to talk about Eric Lindros, sports and politics, and other sundry hockey news items.
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
The Oilers continue to be impressive this season, winning back-to-back games over the weekend despite facing a bevy of injuries. The Flyers lost in Montreal on Saturday night, but also won back-to-back games earlier in the week. But the Columbus Blue Jackets shocked the hockey world with a stunning 10-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens. All this and more on this week’s Hockey Feels!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
Rachel’s NHL Game Presentation Highlights
The first regular season meeting between Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews did not live up to the (massive) hype, with neither player registering a point in a 3-2 OT win for the Maple Leafs on November 1. The Flyers have had troubles keeping the puck out of their own net while displaying a knack for putting that puck in other teams’ nets. Steven and Rachel have thoughts about these developments and more on this week’s Hockey Feels!
Links:
Rachel’s NHL Halloween Costumes:
The Winnipeg Jets hosted the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 NHL Heritage Classic on October 23, so to review the event, it was only right and proper to bring back Bastl’s Bytes host (and Winnipeg native) David Bastl to talk about the celebratory weekend. Steven and David also talk about three of the hottest young stars in the game and how they’re all playing for Canadian teams.
Links:
You know it’s incredibly early in the NHL season when the Oilers are in first place, but with five wins in their first six games, Steven is still cautiously optimistic about the start for his favourite team. Over in Flyers territory, Rachel is happy to see how rookies Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov continue to perform. All this and more in an exciting week in the NHL!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
The first few days of the NHL season are in the books, and there is plenty of optimism in Oil Country after a couple dominant offensive wins over Calgary (and one offensively dominant loss at the hands of the Sabres…). Also, the Flyers are burning the midnight oil out on the west coast, making it difficult for hometown fans to follow their exploits, including those of the Flyers’ newest hockey boys in Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov. Hockey is back, everyone!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
Hockey season is finally here! And so is our NHL season preview episode! Listen as Rachel and Steven agree to disagree on their picks of where some teams will finish in the standings, while finding common ground on how well (or poor) other teams fare. Will the Flyers build on their successful run to the playoffs last season? Will Connor McDavid and the Oilers finally end their playoff drought? Listen and find out!

It's a special midweek episode of the podcast! On this episode, Rachel talks with Deb and Erika (from the Doctor Who podcast Verity!) about one their favourite things as of late, the hit Tumblr hockey webcomic Check, Please! They talk about their love of the comic, its characters, and the Kickstarter campaign launched to help fund the comic by its creator, Ngozi Ukazu. Enjoy!

It already seems like ages ago, but last Thursday, Team Canada won the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Steven and Rachel were blown away by this utterly predictable development, and so devoted some time and energy into discussing the result of this new-ish international tourney. But focus now is on NHL training camps and spotty coverage of preseason games, and the hopes and dreams of Travis Konecny making the Flyers opening day roster. Next week: our NHL preview edition!
Links:
The final in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey is set! Canada will face...Europe? Interesting. Rachel and Steven discuss the World Cup, Rachel's visit to Toronto to watch a couple games and experience the atmosphere, and they lament the beautiful creature that was Team North America. Also, NHL training camps have opened, and optimism is high in both the Oilers' and Flyers' camps. The preseason begins tonight!
Links:
Rachel’s Notes:
The first round robin games at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey are in the books, and there have been some big surprises. Team Europe, that gang of Old World orphans, shocked the heavily favoured USA, while Canada was especially dominant against the Czech Republic. However, those plucky upstarts on Team North America have already won over the coldest of hearts, blitzing Finland, and making Rachel and Steven very happy on this week’s Hockey Feels.
Rachel’s Notes:

The Stanley Cup Final is set! It's the Pittsburgh Penguins, winners of three Stanley Cups, their most recent in 2009, versus the San Jose Sharks in their first ever Finals appearance. Rachel and Steven both wear their hearts on their teal sleeves during this episode in cheering for the Sharks and their ragtag band of beards, although both realize that the Penguins are a formidable opponent indeed. Also, the World Cup of Hockey rosters were finalized, and what's not to love about the Team North America roster? Gostisbehere, Nugent-Hopkins, and Auston Matthews all made the team, which has already won over both Hockey Feels hosts. Bring on September! But first - bring on the Stanley Cup Final!

Another exciting week this week in the NHL, with the Lightning punching their ticket to the Conference Finals, the Sharks, Blues, and Penguins each needing one more win to do the same, and the coaching carousel finding homes for Bruce Boudreau and Guy Boucher in Minnesota and Ottawa, respectively. On this week's show, we're joined by Kate Cimini of Today's Slapshot and the podcast Don't Snow The Goalie to talk about the NWHL at the midpoint of the league's debut season. Rachel and Steven also discuss the plights of their favourite teams, and some holiday spirit is featured in Rachel Recommends. Happy Holidays, everyone!

A great week for the Oilers and their perfect 5-0-0 homestand has buoyed Steven this week, while Rachel's Flyers suffered a couple losses to offset an impressive win over the Blues. But talk of change in Pittsburgh, a new sponsorship deal with the NWHL, and the troubling story of parental abuse suffered by former NHLer Patrick O'Sullivan dominates this week's episode!

It was a good week for both the Oilers and Flyers as both Steven and Rachel's favourite teams experienced winning streaks (although the Flyers had their 4-game streak end on Saturday). Buoyed by this, your hosts discuss various happy and fun things like the All-Star fan voting system and the upcoming NWHL/CWHL outdoor game!

With Steven at yet another Doctor Who-related gathering (this time in Chicagoland), Rachel again provides the interesting discussion points in this episode of Hockey Feels, namely the state of beat writing and reporting in today's NHL. But there's still time for Stadium Series talk, Connor McDavid return dates, and more!

Rachel and Steven are back in their proper places this week, with the Doctor Who-related globetrotting behind them (for now). And good thing too as there are two notable topics that feature during this week's episode - the change in format to the upcoming NHL All-Star Game, as well as all the wacky (and, occasionally, smart) ideas people are coming up with in order to increase scoring in the NHL.

A very special episode of Hockey Feels! Steven and Rachel record in person at Long Island Who, a Doctor Who convention and, in keeping with the theme of the world's longest running science fiction programme, your intrepid hosts take time to compare NHL players of past and present to all the Doctors - with amusing results! Also, talk of injuries, advanced stats, and bobbleheads flesh out this week's charming episode. Enjoy!

An awful week for both Steven and Rachel's teams this past week. The Oilers and Flyers met each other in NHL action on November 3, and while the Oilers escaped with a 4-2 win, they lost superstar Connor McDavid for the foreseeable future with a broken clavicle. Also, the Flyers endured a six-game losing streak before finally snapping it with a win over the weekend. Despite these setbacks, Steven and Rachel talk about defining moments of their hockey fandom in order to cheer themselves up.

An extra special episode of Hockey Feels this week! Steven is on vacation in the UK for the next couple weeks, so he and Rachel invited Patrick Smyth, host of The View From The Bridge, a podcast about the Belfast Giants of the EIHL! The topics range from the history of hockey in Great Britain to where the game is going in the future. A great chat about hockey across the pond that we hope you enjoy.

It took a while, but John Tortorella is back in the NHL, taking over the rudder of the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets. Other teams not doing so well - the Ducks and the Penguins - occupy the discussion this week, but there is plenty to talk about regarding Rachel's Flyers and Steven's Oilers, as well, on another jam packed edition of Hockey Feels!

Not a bad week for both the Flyers and Oilers this week, with backup goalie Michal Neuvirth leading Philly to back-to-back shutouts, and Connor McDavid and all his fellow #1 overall draft picks devouring Calgary on Hockey Night in Canada. Rachel and Steven also take time to discuss what teams are surprising them so far this season (both good and bad), and speculate on the NHL's future expansion plans.

The first weekend of the 2015-16 NHL season is in the books, and it has been a slow start for both Steven's Oilers and Rachel's Flyers, with neither team winning any of their opening games. But there were still thrills and spills to marvel about, and as a special bonus, Steven touches base with David Bastl of TSN 1050 Radio in Toronto to talk about how the Maple Leafs and the media are adjusting to lowered expectations for the rebuilding club.

It's hockey season! Officially! The 2015-2016 NHL regular season gets underway on October 7, and Rachel and Steven talk about how the final preparations for Flyers and Oilers are coming along, and they also run down which teams they think will do well this season, but also which teams they think won't do as well as others might think. Who is prime for a fall? Listen and find out!

On this episode of Hockey Feels, Steven and Rachel talk about how the Oilers and Flyers training camps are coming along, there's an update on the Patrick Kane mess, and how successful will the USA, Canada, or (gasp!) Team North America be at the 2016 World Cup?
