The Flyers winning streak finally came to an end at a staggering ten games this past week, but it was an impressive feat. However, thanks to the Columbus Blue Jackets’ own nine-game winning streak, and to the fact that the Metropolitan Division is the best division in hockey, the Flyers are still only fifth(!) in their division. The Oilers are still in the top three in the Pacific, which in the middle of December is quite astonishing given recent history. Coming soon: the holiday break! And the World Juniors!

The Flyers are red hot. Winners of eight straight games going into recording, Rachel’s favourite team made Steven’s Oilers one of their victims this past week, winning 6-5 in a tense and entertaining affair. But thanks to the rest of the Metropolitan Division, particularly the incandescent Columbus Blue Jackets(!), the Flyers are still only good enough to be tied for fourth in the division. The Oilers, meanwhile, have treaded water as of late, but are still just a point out of first in the Pacific, and Connor McDavid is running roughshod through the league. The first regular season meeting between Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews did not live up to the (massive) hype, with neither player registering a point in a 3-2 OT win for the Maple Leafs on November 1. The Flyers have had troubles keeping the puck out of their own net while displaying a knack for putting that puck in other teams’ nets.
