From a worldly perspective, businesses are formed to provide for the economic security of the folks who own and work in that business. Since food and shelter are basic needs, a business, to be viable, must meet those needs. And it does that by providing goods and services for money. Money then becomes one of the keys to any business.

But that is just the beginning of the benefits that derive from a business run on the Biblical model.

Here’s a very commonly held, and incredibly bad Idea:

Real ministry is only done under the auspices of established religion.

This message—that real ministry is only done under the auspices of established religion -- is implicit on so many levels that it is almost impossible to be a churchgoer and not absorb this idea. Church buildings are often referred to as “God’s house;” pastors are often imbued with some special authority, and giving to the local church is held up as a prerequisite for the Christian life. All these together combine to send the message that “real ministry” is only done under the auspices of the established institution.

The problem with it is twofold: first, it is not biblical, and second, the impact of believing it is devastating.

Is the Institutional Church Really the Church?

The world is filled with marketplace Christians who are content with a shallow Christian presence in their business, afraid of the consequences of a more visible, deeper approach. But what if the benefits far outweighed any discomfort that might come from stepping out and more visibly embracing Christianity in the marketplace? What if that which we would gain so far outweighs our small sense of temporary discomfort that we would look back on it down the road a bit and reflect, “I should have done that years ago.”

In this podcast, I unpack the second of those responses by digging into the sense of divine purpose that comes with a more visible commitment to our relationship with Christ in the marketplace.

The term ‘Kingdom business’ conjures up all kinds of ideas. Some imagine businesses that put gospel tracks with their invoices and checks. Others think of the original “business as mission” idea of businesses which are just really disguised mission efforts. Still others imagine the owners as overly pious people who are out of step with the real world. In this podcast , we offer a definition.

For many Christian professionals and businesspeople, the prospect of practicing our faith in the marketplace is overwhelming. It’s easy to remain paralyzed in the face of so many things calling for our time and attention. In the face of overwhelming number of choices, most marketplace Christians default to what’s comfortable and familiar – which is to focus on worldly success in business and give up on having an impact for the Kingdom.

In order to break through this inertia, here are two little things you can do. These are small acts that get you started and moving on the right path. Check out these complemenatry posts:

There is a certain power and attractiveness that accrues to those folks who take a stand and publicly express it. That’s called leadership, and the world is full of people looking for a leader. There is something compelling about a person who is committed to a cause that is bigger than just himself, who has the courage to declare that commitment not only for himself but on behalf of those in his sphere of influence, and to do so publicly for anyone who wants to hear it. The impact can be incalculable -- spreading across geographies and dripping down into several generations.

Our foundational documents – the Vision, Mission and Values statements we create for our businesses provide an ideal venue for expressing such a commitment.

Work—and by extension, business—is so important to God that he has created “works” for each of us to do, and he prepared them way in advance of our being ready to do them. Just as he gave Adam the task of naming the animals and then worked with him on that task, so he gives each of us tasks to do and works with us to do them. It is how he designed his creation to operate.

While we are familiar with the grand movements of God and the great stories that describe them, we have missed one of the underlying truths: that the primary way God works with man is through our labor and the businesses that emerge from it.

Review my answer to this question: Here’s something that I struggle with almost daily. I’m definitely known for having very high expectations that aren’t so easy to meet. I wondered if you could elaborate on what strategies you have seen succeed regarding this, because while I’m sure open to changing my attitude, I’m not thrilled with lowering my expectations. I’m overly driven...and not far from driven crazy!

Over my career as a sales expert, I’ve personally and contractually worked with over 500 sales organizations. I’ve learned some things. Here’s one: Very few chief sales officers have a good handle on the economics of the sales force. And very few entrepreneurs think about the economics of a sales system.

Almost everyone can tell you what the amounts of the various categories on a P&L statement indicate. So, sales salaries, expenses, advertising costs, etc. are readily at hand. However, very few decision makers dig deeper. And that means that significant information is never uncovered, and decisions are made on the basis of superficial, and often flawed, information. Let’s dig deeper.

Almost every Christian business owner, salesperson and executive has a firm grasp on the idea of stewardship – that everything in this world including our businesses, belongs to God, and we are just temporary stewards of it.

“Everything,” of course, means everything – our families, our gifts and abilities, the position or job that we hold, the influence that we have, the people in our lives – just to name a few.

Once we understand that, we are just naturally led to this question: If that’s the case, am I making everything of this business (or my career) that God wants? What exactly does stewardship mean? Is there a greater good, a bigger impact for His kingdom that I’m not seeing, or not yet realizing?

There are a number of ideas that are bantered around so much within our Christian culture that people assume they are unquestioned truth, when they are anything but that. Here’s one such idea: Spiritual leaders must be seminary-trained pastors.

That idea is non-Biblical, serves to hinder the growth of the Kingdom, and discourages thousands of Christians who would otherwise take on leadership roles. Let’s unpack this.

Good time management recognizes the universal temptation to do more and become ‘too busy. Unfortunately, to continue to try to do “more” is a frustrating strategy that eventually causes great pain: strained relationships, health problems, a sense of helplessness, less effective work, and, in some cases, emotional and physical burnout.

Every Christian understands that there are certain fundamentals of the Christian faith, and that ‘giving’ is one of them.

And while we have all heard lots of sermons about the need to give, and give generously, very few of us have heard any Biblical teaching on an important aspect of that giving – “To whom should we give?” And “How should we give it?” We’re looking more closely at those questions.

One of Christianity’s greatest failures has been the separation of the church from the world of business and commerce – acting on the premise that there are some things which are secular, and others which are sacred. Christian companies and their owners and executives must share some of the blame, as they have been comfortable following the worldly approach to business. As a result, countless millions of people around the world and across generations have never known the touch of God’s love expressed through a relationship with a Christian company.

We are all too often incredibly busy – but with the wrong things. Activity becomes addictive and we become automatons, forever pursuing the satisfaction of accomplishment but rarely assessing the value of that accomplishment. We do it because it’s there, not because we have decided to do it. Intentionality suffers as activity prospers.

We run the risk of living a busy life, but being busy with the wrong things. What if all these things we’re busy with really weren’t worth it? And we never saw it?

As an educated and experienced practitioner in the profession of helping people change their behavior, I’ve come to the conclusion that our set of preexisting beliefs supplies the largest and most potent set of obstacles to self-improvement and the greater success and fulfillment that comes with it.

Human beings naturally make observations and conclusions about our experiences as we grow up and experience life. Eventually, some of these become hardened into beliefs. These beliefs than form our base set of assumptions about the world, and we make choices and live our lives based on those beliefs.

Inappropriate or errant beliefs can hold us back.

The problem is that what happens there so turns them off that they are lost to Christianity for the rest of their lives. They equate church with Christianity, and find church to be disagreeable, and so reject Christ.

It’s like we are vaccinating them from ever considering Christ again. A vaccination is made from dead and powerless organisms, that, when injected into our body prevent us from contacting the real thing. That’s exactly what we are doing to the lost around us. We bring them into our churches, and it turns them off. They equate church with Christianity, and then become immune to the real power of Christ.

This is the first of a series on words that should be banned from Christianity. Here’s the first: “Ministry.”

We are all familiar with the Pareto principle, which, when applied to the world of sales, says that 80% of the business comes from 20% of the customers. As a general rule, whenever there is a large group producing something, 20% of that group produce 80% of the results.

Likewise, the “Five Percent Principle” states that five percent of the people produce 50% of the outcome. Applying that can be transformational for your business or career.

I’m afraid for the future of our country. I’m afraid because I believe that the discipline of thinking before we act – in every circumstance and level of society -- is rapidly disappearing.  In its place, we are witnessing a whole host of alternatives. It is like thousands of years of human development has been shrugged to the side, and a new ethic of rushing to conclusions with little objective basis has replaced it.  We are regressing to the Middle Ages.

In my 30 years of practice, I’ve interacted with thousands of executives and owners, and engaged with tens of thousands of B2B salespeople. The overwhelming majority have been lulled by moderate success to a place where they are hesitant to pursue excellence, weary of reaching for their potential, tentative about embracing any new ideas and afraid of stretching beyond today’s comfort zones.

That’s one of the main reasons why only five to twenty percent of businesses and salespeople ever reach their potential. The rest got waylaid by moderate success.

There are certain culturally supported beliefs that are widespread throughout the modern institutional church. It doesn’t matter what the particular flavor of the church is, its denominational affiliation, or its position on the charismatic/conservative spectrum. Regardless of these differences, almost every congregation holds these beliefs and adheres to these practices.

Not only are these practices pervasive, they’re also so deeply held that virtually no one questions them.  The problem is that they have devastating spiritual consequences. Let's look at the belief that church is about teaching and worship.

In the earliest days of creation, God created work. The first thing He did with Adam was to give him a job. First, a lifetime purpose and then a specific task that contributes to that purpose. Then within the context of that job, God worked with Adam, spoke to him, related to him, and worked together with him.

In other words, God created work—and by extension, business—as the venue in which God would speak with man, relate to man, and work with man. That hasn’t changed.

One essential component of that core competency of the discipline of learning from the past. Successful companies and individuals often institutionalize that process in the form of an annual review.

It was a hot June day in Tulsa, maybe 35 years ago, and I was attending a regional Christian conference.  One of the speakers was Alan Bryan – a good ole’ boy with a heavy Alabama accent who began his presentation with those words.

It was almost delicious – these remarkable words, contorted through the accent that was almost a caricature, laid out over the audience and catching us up as if in a butterfly net. We all stared at him, wondering what was coming next.

Alan went on to explain, and then defend his title.  Dogs don’t bark at tombstones.  So, if you are figurately dead, content to stay within your comfort zones, afraid to verbalize your Christianity, then the dogs won’t bark at you.

Often, God doesn’t speak directly to us about a decision we have. Rather, He has spent a lifetime equipping us and molding us to develop the knowledge, the character, and the experience to answer the question. He’s provided us life experiences, taught us by trial and error and multiple failures, influenced us through relationships, and embedded into us a knowledge of Him and His word.

At some point, He expects us to use all of that which he has given us and decide based on wisdom.

At its most fundamental level, business is always and only about three things: Money, people and systems.

There is a huge body of content revolving around money in business.

When it comes to people, as an element in business, there is an equally impressive body of knowledge and infrastructure.

When it comes to systems, however, particularly sales systems, there is not nearly the quantity and quality of conversation. And yet an effective sales system is, at the very least, just as necessary to the growth and health of a business as good people and adequate funds. Good systems are where the company’s financial assets intertwine with the people to produce results.

So, what do you think you can do for us?”  The CEO had finally gotten to that question after a couple of hours of introduction to his company and their specific marketing problem.

They had a successful company, selling acoustic panels through architects for buildings that had a sound problem.  A year or so ago, they had developed a new product – a computer-operated sign board that allowed building managers to list events and meetings, and to easily change those as needed.  The product had taken a year to develop and the company had poured all its excess financial resources into it – a couple of hundred thousand dollars.  Now, they were having difficulty selling the product, and had no money to invest in a sales and marketing system.

I answered his question.  “Nothing.  I can’t make something out of nothing.  If you have no money to invest in the system to sell this new product, I can’t do anything for you.”

Unfortunately, their situation is not unique.

I call it the ‘gap between idea and action,’ and it is one of the largest chasms in the road hindering our path to personal and organizational improvement. The gap between idea  and action describes the ubiquitous phenomenon that we, all of us, have ideas and intentions, and yet turning those into actions – habits and routines that enhance our skills and smooth out our lives, only happens a bit of the time.  As a general rule, we’re miserable at it.

If we can bridge that gap, we can supercharge our growth, feel less guilt and become more confident in our progression as a human being.

Our actions follow our attitudes. The relationship between actions and attitudes is so close, that the two go hand-in-hand, and our actions can be seen as outward expressions of our attitudes. While it is easy to connect the two in this example, the principle that it unveils – that our attitudes influence our actions – extends to every aspect of our lives, and particularly to our jobs, in even the slightest and most mundane portions of our work lives. And that leads us to one of the greatest principles of self-improvement.

There is something about adversity that has the power to linger forever in our memories, shaping our character and molding our behavior for the rest of our life.  We can use it to grow and become better people, if we let it.

We all recognize that our personal spiritual growth is a journey that lasts our lifetime.  It typically takes decades for an individual to progress from the tiny steps of belief, repentance and baptism to the point at which he/she is a spirit-lead mature Christian.

But what about the spiritual growth and maturity of a business?  Can those words and concepts even apply? Can a business develop its spiritual maturity in the same way that an individual does?

“I’m too busy.” There is not an executive entrepreneur or salesperson in the world who can’t make that statement. We all know that we can easily spend 16 hours a day in the business.

The constant call of things to do is like an all-consuming magnetic force that pulls us into investing time and energy into the business. The pull is always there, the business is always on our minds, and we have to work at resisting it.

So, it’s easy to understand that, when faced with the charge to begin to add Biblical practices and principles to the business, so many of us default to “I’m so busy with the business, I can’t possibly take the time to implement anything additional.”

Here’s a simple solution.

Because a Kingdom business is more than just a money-making entity, it has spiritual functions over and above those that proceed out of the desire to make money.  In addition to the fundamental business areas of sales, operations, and finance, Christian companies are organized to make an impact for the Kingdom.  This is a new idea for many Christian business people. Let’s dig into it.

While many Christians have been content to focus on the worldly aspects of our business and professions, we’ve seen the culture fall apart around us, we’ve witnessed the percentage of Christians in the country shrink, and lately we’ve seen evil manifest itself in our country in ways that are unprecedented in our lifetime. And all of that prior to the Covid pandemic.

We’ve all heard the story of Nero fiddling while Rome burned.  Likewise, Christians in the marketplace have been content to pursue worldly achievement while the culture around us has degraded.  We’ve sat on the sidelines, oblivious to the spiritual carnage all around us.

Now is the time to step up and change that.

We often see a crisis as a heavy, worrisome set of circumstances that threatens the status quo. We fear that it is likely to create some significant change that could bring dire economic circumstances, shake up our comfortable routines, and open the door to a fuzzy but scary future.

It is all that. Yet, if we respond effectively, it can be a watershed event in our lives and the life of our business – changing our course and opening up a whole new future of greater challenge, greater capacity, greater wealth, and deeper and broader impact. And the crises you may be in right now may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you.

We understand that, as Christian businesspeople, we are charged with growing the assets we have been given to manage. And if we are successful, we will be given greater responsibilities and a closer relationship with God. If you have arrived at that point – where you see your career or your business as striving for excellence, extending God’s love, grace and provision to those you touch, and acknowledging his place in the all of this – is that sufficient?

Is that all there is? Or is that yet another level of impact available to the successful Christian professional or businessperson? Should we be salt and light beyond our own spheres of influence? Is there anything above and beyond that?

A few decades ago, the culture in the US could objectively be described as ‘predominantly Christian influenced.”  In the past 30 or so years, that has changed dramatically.  As I am writing this, in the Fall of 2020, we have seen cultural trends come to a head:  increased lawlessness; disrespect for authority, institutions and one another; abandonment of principles of rational thinking and the rule of law, among others.

It is common to blame others:  partisan politicians, the death of objective journalism, left-wing college professors and teachers to name a few.  And, while all of these have contributed to the mess we’re in, there is one factor that few people have acknowledged:  US!

I’d like for us to consider this question:  Has our mindless acceptance of the division and separation fostered by the institutional church system substantially contributed to the mess we’re in?

Biblical business owners and executives have a special opportunity to intercede for a certain segment of the Lord’s people – their employees, customers, and vendors.  This is a special ministry for which business owners and executives are uniquely positioned.  There is no other person who has relationship with the people that you, through your business, have.

While many businesspeople have a sense of that responsibility, they often get sidetracked in deciding how to make that happen.  Here are some real-life examples of how people have made prayer a regular part of their business routines.

From a worldly perspective, businesses are formed to provide for the economic security of the folks who own and work in that business. Since food and shelter are basic needs, a business, to be viable, must meet those needs. And it does that by providing goods and services for money.  Money then becomes one of the keys to any business.  But that is just the beginning of a benefits to a business that is run on the Biblical model.

I have often wondered why we don’t see the Holy Spirit active in our lives, our businesses and our communities in the dramatic and visible ways that we see him in the early days of the church. What’s changed?

Some time ago, I realized that God has not changed, but we have. I received an image that made clear to me how we hinder the actions of the Holy Spirit in our lives and our businesses. The ideas and paradigms that we gradually acquire can hinder our understanding of God’s plans for us. In this article, I share that concept.

Here’s a very commonly held, and incredibly bad Idea:

Real ministry is only done under the auspices of established religion.

This message—that real ministry is only done under the auspices of established religion- is implicit on so many levels that it is almost impossible to be a churchgoer and not absorb this idea.

In the early 1960’s, this country could be characterized as being predominantly “Christian.”

Over the last 50 years, in the space of one or two generations, we have lost the culture.  This is an epic failure, akin to the ancient Israelites giving up the worship of Jehovah and turning to idols.  Our culture has done exactly that.  We have removed God from a central position in our culture and, in His place, have substituted the idols of our times.  Greed, sex, power and secular humanism have replaced Christ as the bedrock of our culture.

It’s an incredible turn of events.  Here we were, the richest, most prosperous, most Christian nation on earth; founded on Christian principles by Godly men, with a rich culture of God in our schools, in our media, and in our government.  Then, in the space of one or two generations, we have lost it.

We’ve all heard the conventional wisdom that to run a successful business, you need to “put the right people on the right seats on the bus.”  Unfortunately, that advise ignores a more important element of business success.  Before you arrange the people, you must have the bus in good condition.  That means the systems and structure of an organization must effective and efficient.  One way to think about that is to view it through the perspective of freedom and boundaries.

Have you noticed this about the Bible? Sometimes, when the Lord really wants us to understand something, He repeats it. This may be one of only a couple of times in the entire Bible where he repeats Himself, word for word, not just once, but three times, in just a few passages. He tells Joshua, as the Hebrews are about to enter the promised land, to “Be strong and be brave.” Is there a lesson in this for us? Should we, as a leader, be strong and be brave?

Biblical businesses, or households, had a significant role in expanding and solidifying the early Christian movement. The Bible demonstrates a spirituality in business that few in the religious community recognize. Your business has that same potential to become a spiritual juggernaut, not just a means to make money. That can bring you greater fulfilment and purpose in your life.

From the very beginning of creation, all the way through the Bible to today, God established work, and by extension, business, as the primary occupation of mankind and the fundamental place where he would interact with man and develop a relationship with him.  If you are a Christian, and own or run a business or a significant portion of that business, and you want to create a relationship with God, look for him in your work.

No matter what we do, we feel like the striving for balance hinders our business growth and frustrates our families. There is a lot of conversation these days about using our businesses to make a positive impact on our communities and the people we touch.  Typically, the conversation runs to mission statements and high-level topics.

Literally millions of people have been exposed to Christ through our institutional churches.
