Why do we protest? Whose job is it to "respond" to protests? How are we a part of the problem around this?
Police claim that without them, there would be more crime. But what is the crime that we are asking police to stop and solve? How do we contribute to this by allowing fear of certain crimes to prevail in our own minds?
We want the police to reform. But what exactly are we asking for? The fundamental problem for me is that we are asking the police to do 5 different things: 1) Punish criminal (run jail) 2) Solve crimes and provide evidence 3) Enforce Laws 4) Prevent Crime 5) Maintain public safety But these five things are at odds with each other. So the police end up using the tools of others to fulfill the goals of one (and that one is definitely not 4 or 5). Also a simple but difficult structural way to keep police accountable. Put pressure on who they elect for their union heads, limit their scope, and establish a separate police for the police.
Our first episode. Talking about givens. If you don't believe that there's any racism or even systematic racism then this is not the podcast where we have that debate. Also we are sharing as Christians. This is also not the podcast where we have those debates. What we do talk about in the wake of George Floyd and massive protests is how much do we expect people to change? How do we respond to those who we feel won't change?
Sharing about how it's hard for us to speak up in the midst of these journeys. Our struggle with hope and hopelessness
